Some background: I was looking for a new salon in NYC after over 15 years of jumping around. I've had stylists who were territorial over my head and would scold me when I went to anyone else, I've had stylists who used me as a guinea pig for avant-garde styles I didn't really want, I've been to salons that made it clear that they only really cared about serving models and celebrities. In a sense, I was traumatized! Then, after another breakup and a plea for recommendations on Instagram, a friend recommended I try Seagull Salon. I loved the history of the place, the way it seemed to cater to working artists & its connection to the queer art scene. I booked an appointment with Carly, the first stylist who had an appointment. The salon is centrally located, cute, clean, and friendly. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age or style. The other stylists seem super talented and leave looking amazing and happy. BUT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CARLY. Carly is like a haircutting Angel. not only is she one of the most talented and dedicated stylists and colorists I've ever been to, but she is just truly a delight to be around. I look forward to our appointments like I look forward to happy hour with an old friend. She is warm, communicative, interesting, and I always leave feeling amazing. I love the way her cuts have so much movement and that they grow out nicely. After one appointment with her, I knew I could trust her to do my highlights for my wedding. Overall amazing. I've been going to a hair stylist for years at another salon but she moved away and her visit back were more and more infrequent. Honestly, I almost hesitated to write a review on account of Topher's awesomeness. Originally from nyc with a long residence in the Bay Area until last summer, I've been on the hunt for a specific kind of stylist--one that understood androgynous and esoteric cuts. I've been growing my hair back from being partially shaved down to a side buzz cut and super long on the other side. While I wanted to modernize my hair to be more east coast understated and less free-style west coast, this didn't mean I wanted to cross over completely...and I'm over looking classically femme. Topher was kind, warm, confidant and skilled. NYC prices aren't low, but if the stylist is doing it right, you shouldn't have to return more than a few times a year--unless you get bored easily...and my experience with Topher was that he's subtle with making changes, so you're not going to ever walk away hating it, or feeling underwhelmed. Oh, and bang trim between cuts are free. I most definitely will be returning. read more

Seagull is a welcoming, stylish, and wonderfully queer friendly salon. I'm sure all of their stylists are great, but Liz Wright is a total superstar. I started seeing her in November and have gotten more compliments from coworkers and total strangers on my hair than I've ever gotten on any style - and that was on cut alone, I didn't even get color done and that's what she's known for. She knows her shit - grateful to have found her - too bad for seagull that she's opening her own salon, soon. Truly can't recommend this salon (esp Liz!) enough. read more

I had long hair that was dyed red multiple times. I've grown so tired of the red hair and really wanted a dramatic change. I called and went in for consultations at multiple studios but everywhere I went they were reluctant to take me or just straight up said it was impossible to get the red out. I would need to just grow out my natural hair and wait 2 years. Enter Seagull and the amazing Topher + Jeanise (@piggyhuggums). Jeanise sat me down a few weeks ago and told me what she will be able to do and what I can expect. She quoted me a fair price and worked with me to find ways to cut that price down without compromising the quality of the final result. I was nervous about how this will turn out because 1) I've never had short hair before and 2) many of the other hair salons have warned me about the unevenness of color in my hair and the impossible amount of bleach it would take and the consequent damage. Walked in today, didn't have to wait at all, got started right away. Topher is charming, funny, relatable. Overall extremely cool guy (like everyone at the salon). I actually loved the haircut he gave me so much I would've been okay just walking out with that. It was already a really stunning transformation. I went from chest length hair to just above my shoulders. The haircut gave me a lot more movement and I just looked younger and more radiant. 10/10 Then begins what amounted to about 6 hours of bleaching, conditioning, highlighting, toning. Throughout this entire process, Jeanise was very clear with me about what we're doing, what I can expect ("you might feel tingling on your scalp"). She was an absolute angel. I complained that my neck hurts, she gave me advil and tried to lessen the weight on my head. I complained about the bleach touching my skin, she adjusted the towel until I felt comfortable. I questioned her decision to include pink stripes, she addressed my concerns. And really there was no need for such questioning because after everything was washed off I really thought i might cry. I was so beyond happy with the result. The grey tones were exactly what I had in mind, and the added pink made it so much edgier. My hair didn't feel damaged, it didn't smell like chemicals--in fact it smelled like roses, smelled really good. I have been quoted much higher prices at other places for results where I would've had to compromise a lot more. I am very very very happy with every aspect of my experience and would highly recommend Seagull, Topher, and Jeanise to anyone looking to slay this summer. read more

I had been going to Laura for my cut and color for about 10 years, but recently moved away from the NYC area. I was worried about finding a new stylist but decided to go ahead and get my hair cut somewhere new in the area where I had moved. Now, whenever I look in the mirror I want to cry. I remember making my first appointment and then trying to get my daughter to talk me out of having some stranger turn my hair lavender. Every single person who works at the Sea Gull is extraordinarily nice, and most importantly: real. I have really fine, tight curls and it's easy for my hair to look flat and lifeless. I've had a lot of haircuts from curly hair "experts" that I spent a lot of money on (Deva cuts and Ouidad salons mostly), but they all just end up looking the same. Kel was able to change that around and give me the best cut I've ever had! I asked Kel for their opinion on what I should do and I'm so glad I went for it. I would NEVER have expected a shag haircut to give my super fine hair more body, nor to be able to sport bangs, but this is the most flattering cut I've ever had. They were really kind, supportive, and thorough. You can tell Kel has a lot of passionate experience about hair and it really shines through as they work so meticulously to get every strand in place. I am beyond happy with my experience at Seagul Salon. The receptionist was super friendly and that vibe continued throughout the whole place. I've been in NYC for 5 years now and my hair has never came out this good. Humby has great technique and they use all quality products. My blonde came out cool toned, not yellow at all, which happens so often. I had bayalage done for the first time and will never go back to regular highlights. I got a cut by Topher and I'm SO glad I did! Right after I chatted with Topher I trusted him to do my first under cut ever and I love it so much! I wanted a drastic change- had very long and full hair for my wedding that I grew out for a year. So I asked Topher to chop it off and change things up. I've been going to Maggie at Seagull for a few years now and I'm so happy to have found a consistent hair stylist who GETS me. I always used to feel uncomfortable getting hair cuts, but with this nonjudgemental salon's atmosphere, mixed with Maggies great communication, cut and color skills, I always leave feelin like I'm on cloud 9. Maggie colors my hair to match the abstract paintings I make, gives me edgy but pretty cuts, but best of all she installs TINSEL in my hair. Tinsel is seriously the funnest, painless and safe thing you could ever get to give your hair the next level pop. I've been hesitant to write this review but every time the color I get fades to reveal the damage done by Laura I get so livid. By all means go to her for a haircut, she gives a great one. I had a terrible experience with getting balayage from her. I have had that done previously while traveling and just asked her to bring it back to life as it had grown out a bit. She asked if I wanted some on my fringe and top layer and I said, "yes a natural sun kissed look is perfect." Well she made me a freaking blonde. I couldn't believe what I saw when I got all rinsed. She joked something like, "You'll get to know how it feels to be blonde now!" I expressed my dissatisfaction and had her book me in the following day to gloss over it and bring it more to my natural color. During that time she said, "To be fair, you did ask for this." No bloody way did I ask for that. That conversation would have gone like, "I think I want to become a blonde." So now I go to another salon that dyes my hair back to its natural color. But thanks to Laura, my beautiful and healthy natural hair was ruined and I'm reminded of it every time the dye fades away and every time I notice how damaged my hair feels. I was referred to this amazing hair salon a few months ago. Got1 in touched with a man who has taken my hair from dried and dull to full color bomb. I have gone there twicw and have come out feeling magical each time. HUMBY is super nice really friendly and always shares my vision in colors and makes it come true. I so wanted to love this place. I followed their blog and loved the colours they were able to produce. Their price is a bit more than I usually spend, but I was tired of lackluster hair dyes. I saw Laura and we discussed what I was looking for. She said that I couldn't get the look I was going for, but that she could probably do an ombre for me. I don't know if there was a miscommunication, but I didn't like the end result. On top of that, I was kept waiting for a really long time before she did the blow dry because she had to cut someone else's hair. Seagull handles my nails (Gina) and my hair (Jeanise) and it's kind of my favorite place in the city. Gina makes me feel like a damn celebrity every time I visit, and I leave with nails fit for any A-List. She's a true artist and is meticulous with the shape and wearability of each set, from start to finish. From cartoon characters to high art and everything in between, I have never brought Gina a project she hasn't knocked out of the park. Jeanise worked with my ridiculous hair to make it even MORE ridiculous, despite my hectic schedule and tendency to sweat every color out. She's made this gym rat into Rainbow Brite and I'm totally here for it. I was in NY just for a couple days and decided to get a blow out for dinner that night. I'm so glad I called Seagull! From the moment I called the receptionist was so nice on the phone and was able to get me in just a couple hours later. When I arrived she was welcoming and attentive and she ended up being the one to wash my hair too, and let me tell you, Best shampoo massage ever! I would go back just for that! Kacey I believe was her name. Then when Katie did my hair, she too was welcoming and very nice. Best part was she was so gentle with my very dry hair, that is usually a pain to get a brush or comb through. But I never once felt any discomfort. I've Never had such a wonderful experience like that before. And she did a great job on styling my hair! I just wish she and your salon were here in Austin! I chose seagull based on their reviews and reputation. I have to say, it lives up to them. I'm a recent northeast returnee; I spent about seven years in Seattle and three in New Orleans. I just moved back, and I haven't colored my hair since April. (I know. I know.) I got a pretty fast appointment when I called, and I'm really happy with the results. Sara did my plum color, and my former hair stylist in New Orleans (Erica at stardust on magazine street, who is a magician) would be the first to tell you how picky I am about the shade. If it's too red I'm not happy. Well... Sara is also a magician, lucky for me. She layered pravana over "normal" single process color and I'm thrilled with the results. Everyone was nice, the place had a good, happy vibe, and I got a free "resistance is beautiful" button (I'm a liberal. I like resisting crazy people. I also like buttons).
