I was stunned when I walked into Mariano's on Clybourn this morning. It looked like an empty basement when walking in from the garage. It used to be so vibrant and full with many customers. As far as I could tell, I seemed to be the only one there. I walked over to the flower department to buy several bouquets....they were ok, but not great. When I asked to wrap them all together so I would not drop one, I was told it would be $5 for a paper wrap. I opted out. This was very sad to see the demise of this location. I certainly will not be returning. I hope corporate can come in and revive! read more

I overall enjoy this Mariano's bc there's really good take out options affordably in this neighborhood. What annoys me is that the front entrance to the Mariano's is almost closed with several self-checkout counters permanently closed. You might think this is bc they don't have enough staff but there's a security guy posted at that entrance. Teach the security guy how to work the self-checkout and then you could go in and out through the main entrance and not have to go through the whole store to check out read more

One of the best Mariano's locations in Chicago! This store is easy to navigate, is well stocked, and its checkouts are easy breezy. If you have a question, associates are available and eager to assist. The customer service representative, Taylor, was super helpful when I needed help with the price of an item.The manager, Steven, was even walking around making sure that everyone was doing okay and checking stock. For me, an alright Mariano's. I do appreciate the parking situation and validated parking that is provided which is nice if you're driving in and the weather is bit wet or cold. Produce and other goods are fairly good, but sometimes it's difficult to find the price labels and the overall atmosphere of the store isn't as positive as what I see from other Mariano's locations I've been to. Somehow, the overall layout and decor don't give me the same premium atmosphere that I feel at other locations (particularly in the suburbs). With that said though, prices are reasonable here and the selection is good. It's a respectable option for getting groceries and convenient if you're also dining at Newcity. It also doesn't feel as busy or crowded as other places nearby. read more

produce always looks ok so that's never the issue. no one looks happy to work, the asian kid behind the meat counter is so unsanitary when it comes to handling food idk how he still works there. scratch your head and rub your face without gloves, then not wash your hands afterwards!? so nasty. and he's always the only one working when I have to get meat. the checkout sensors for self checkout are so sensitive and weird, but it's always the only thing open. the checkout lines are never lit up and no one's working. sucks it's the closest one, but not interested in going here anymore. read more

The hot bar & salad bar area needs proper management, no variety (five kinds of chicken in the hot bar) very little Sea food or healthy options rarely available. Container sizes limited if any have labels to be able to scan on checkout it is a plus. Over the years this store has had a lot of turn around so service is inconsistent and when they get it right the person who got it right no longer works there and the service lacks once again. I been going to this store since it opened and have been seeing the decline with managers not really putting in work to resolve the issues during the hot bar hours nor seem interested that less and less people are taking a chance of the experience they are going to get that day. read more

Minutes before closing on Saturday night, we had to take our helium balloons to the second floor to ring out. Man downstairs told us the bag to corral. The balloons would be upstairs. Upstairs told us downstairs. There's a young woman who was so nice to us and considerate. She offered to go downstairs and look in very little time. She was back up, giving us the bag often times, it's the little things that and dearest to a business. Their kindness when we need itthe employee who takes on land standard work. Feng shue is awful and the vibe is sub par. They do have most of the things and have good operating hours. Convenient location. And parking. But how these guys manage to make a clean, well stocked modern supermarket feel like a post-apocalyptic wasteland...its a talent. read more

Definitely enjoy visiting this location; I frequent this one the most and have no issues navigating the isles. They always have the freshest produce, and meats and the prettiest floral selections. I also love when I am on time for the free samples, you never know when they will be out, but I love when I catch them. read more

I've been a long time customer and today was the final straw. I get to the checkout line with a half cart and the cashier (Erin) starts complaining to the other cashiers about how big all the orders are. She finishes ringing up my order and stands there. I ask if she's going to bag it and she says 'aren't you going to do it?' I say no it's not my job and she rolls her eyes at me I tell the manager who then makes excuses for her. This is the 2nd time in the last month with 2 different cashiers that that's happened to me with. I'm officially done with this or any other Mariano's. I usually spend 2-300 a week there and you're losing that because you don't hold your employees responsible. read more

I went there to get deviled egg potato salad. The potatoes were hard. Not a tasty salad at all. I got a large size for our Easter gathering and would've been better off with a large bag of potato chips. I actually got an upset stomach from it. Most of it got thrown away. Also, there was live music downstairs at the bar in which the band was playing in banging unrhythmic tones, very annoying. No amount of wine would've helped this sound better. The employees working at the deli were extremely helpful though when I was looking for the potato salad which I wish I never found lol. A very sparse design also, cold in atmosphere. I like the sushi here when I'm in a hurry and need a snack, it's made right in front of you, so I always get it fresh! Sometimes they make custom orders, but all the sushi is time stamped, and I stick to the basics. these grocery stores are very clean but I wish the staff was more available & nicer in helping me find things. *also, white rice can be switched out for brown rice - when I'm in the mood that rice is nice; it's firmer, but still tasty. read more

After doing a little holiday shopping, I stopped for a bit of quick grocery shopping. I figured why not round out my shopping day with more shopping?! This Mariano's location is situated near a great shopping neighborhood. Just north and south of North Avenue, small and large stores are in abundance. You can shop for fun things and groceries too. Validated complimentary parking is easily available. The supermarket has two floors so if you park on the second floor and check out on that level, you can walk right out to your car. Otherwise there is a quick elevator in the parking garage. I found this supermarket to be well stocked. Many holiday items were in abundance. The bakery and floral departments were festive and giving off the holiday spirit. Prices here seem very fair. There are always deals in many departments. You'll see sale signs everywhere. The wine and liquor department is filled with so many options. They maintain the produce department and keep it looking fresh and fabulous. There was a small wait at checkout, but everyone was masked up and socially distanced. The young girl that assisted me was super nice and efficient. I felt like I was able to park, shop and get home quickly. My overall experience was positive. I appreciate easy parking, a clean and well stocked store, great prices and pleasant staff. read more

I had a VERY unpleasant experience with the bar attendant Luisa. Yesterday I purchased two drinks from the bar, which totaled $13 & I paid in cash. I returned sometime later to purchase one more drink - this time I paid with my card. After receiving my one drink, checking out & then reviewing my receipt. I noticed she charged me $13 again for two drinks. When I went back to the counter to question why there were two drinks on my receipt, she stated that she undercharged me the first time and put the difference on this transaction. I then asked her why didn't know let me know of that information "before" charging my card? Which is a valid question!!! She could've easily stated, "Ma'am unfortunately I undercharged you by mistake last time, is it okay if I charge the difference?" I also inquired on how was I mischarged, the price difference, etc. and she was very rude to me within explaining. She was short with me, rude, unapologetic, not understanding, and I didn't appreciate this at all. And when I asked to speak to a manger, she kept stating that I had a "problem" & she painted me out to be the problematic customer/angry black woman and threatened to call security? This is where I became frustrated. Her manager Manny soon came down & was very patient in the matter, but I did not receive a refund, any courtesy regarding anything, etc. Although the price isn't necessarily the issue, I was treated unfairly and that is not how paying customers are supposed to be treated!!! What if I hadn't returned to purchase again? What if I were to bring exact change again? I did call corporate, but I still didn't feel as though anything would be done (and if so, it'd be without my knowledge) so.... PLEASE BE CAREFUL with this bar attendant and CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS! She may undercharge you by mistake and if you return, charge her mistake without your knowledge to your card &/or give you incorrect change. read more

This is one of the better Mariano's that I have been too. It has 2 floors. The hot bar and other specialty foods are on the first floor. The grocery store is on the 2nd floor. The parking is horrendous. Even though there is a parking lot is it so crowded. And the spaces are very tight. The parking garage is shared by other businesses in the building. The parking is 2 hrs free when validated. During the week for lunch the parking is free. Not sure how that works. This one seems larger than the south loop or the west loop locations. Although I like it, I would rather park on the street. read more

I went to the Mariano's on Clybourn just south of North Ave today. Clybourn Ave at this point has a concrete curb that separates the car traffic from the bike line (nice touch for the bikers). The elevation along Clybourn is totally nondescript from the outside as you turn around the corner there is an entry into a parking structure. When you go into the parking structure you are totally lost and confused because there are 7 levels to the parking lot. I parked on the first level and didn't realize you can enter the store at that level so I took an elevator to the second level because the button on the elevator says Mariano's Second Floor. I got off the elevator into a open area that was just as confusing with very poor signage. There was a woman equally as lost as me wondering where the hell we were? The signage is very poorly done, unless you have ever been there not very easy to navigate so it loses a star for that. That being said I kind of went into the Mariano's w/a negative attitude, but once I started walking around the store I was very impressed with the layout of the store. I came in on the second floor and walked into an area where the produce was. As I meandered through I saw large spacious areas adjacent to these areas were display cases w/seafood, baked goods opening to a 2 story volume of space that looked down into an area that housed fresh flowers and plants below. As I walked on there was a huge display of different wines. I was so impressed by the huge variety and volume of different wines. I began to wonder if they had a salad bar and hot food area that all the Mariano's have, but I didn't see it on the second level. As I wandered through the store I was directed to a large staircase that went down the the first level. As I went down the stair in the center I saw the salad bar and beyond that the hot food area. To the left there was an area that had different style of pizzas for sale, on the right there is an actual wine bar where you can sit, have a glass of wine and eat your meal that can be purchased from one of the many displays throughout the store. At the bottom of the stair on the right there is an enclosed room w/a very impressive collection of large hanging cheese balls and meats. They also have an impressive area for baked goods. The thing that impressed me is the large spacious areas & aisles for circulation between the various display cases. The store is super clean and meticulously laid out over the 2 space area. Both floors exit onto their respective parking area outside w/an additional exit on the first floor by the 2 story volume through the 2 story volume w/flowers and plants to the outside. The store is super clean and not overly crowded (it was a weekday). I know it's just a grocery store, but all Mariano's are not created equal. As far as the store itself this is probably the finest Mariano's I have ever been to, for this I give it 5 stars. The lack of signage and circulation outside the store leave a lot to be desired. Just a note there are 5 other levels (from 3-7) above the Mariano's w/different merchants that I didn't have time to explore. This is a paid parking lot that you will need to get validation for (2hr limit) free parking. Between 11am - 2pm on weekdays there is no charge for parking. read more

It's in a convenient location, but I will say the lanes are always under staffed. Recently they stopped letting people do self checkout on a register with an actual belt, which makes checking out if you have more than a handful of items very difficult. I feel for the store as they have a shoplifting problem given the proximity to Noble Academy next door, and having to police dozens of kids at a time. But still it makes shopping very inconvenient. Cleanliness varies, often times things are under stocked especially near afternoon. If you're buying meat try to do it in the AM or they will be out. Often times the hot bar area can have an unusual smell. Finally a lot of the staff show contempt and disgust towards customers. When I purchase alcohol Here and self checkout, and then require someone to check my ID, consistently you can expect whoever is baby sitting the self checkout to look at me with a death glare for the inconvenience of having them get off their phone. read more

Any grocer that serves $3 beers at a full-length bar gets my vote. The beer fridge upstairs is unique and all of the counter goodies downstairs like gelato and fancy popcorn at fair prices makes Mariano's a great shopping experience. read more

Woof. I am done here. I have be going here three years because it is the closest place to my house. It is so stressful every time I go. I go midday to avoid crowds and they never have enough registers open and there are still long lines. And a few time have only had self check out open. The baggers use a bag for single items and waste so much, even when I bring my own bags they fill them a third full and move on. The people behind the meat deli completely ignore me, even after I request help. There prices are ok and their selection inconsistent. The mislabel sale items that don't ring up as on sale at the register. Also, all those cheese and hummus is on the first floor and it is a pain to get down their with a cart. I leave this place every week frustrated. I am going to start driving farther to go elsewhere. read more

Prices posted on countless items come out higher at the register. Issue has been going on for quite some time and is across every Mariano's I've shopped. I've pointed this out numerous times to the staff. I don't blame the staff. They manually correct, but it takes a while and not realistic to do when there's a line of people waiting. This is a serious issue, and it's only getting worse. This rarely happens, if at all, at other grocery stores like Jewel, Aldi, and Whole Foods. This is such a fantastic grocery store. It's beautifully immaculately maintained in terms of clean standards every time I go in there. Hot food bar is great, not tried the salad bar or oysters or sushi yet. Downstairs is the cheese room, cafeteria type set up with tables and chairs and floral. Upstairs is everything else: produce, alcohol, meats, frozen and refrigerated section, chips, baking, personal care. The one thing I think was terrible planning with this place is the entrances are extremely complicated to get to. If you're coming from the parking garage it's super easy. But if you're coming from the movie theatres, Dicks, or just the general New City part you have to go up the escalator like you're going to the movies, walk past into the parking garage to get into Mariano's.....why so difficult Mariano's?? And IF there is a more simple way then why is hiding and so difficult to find? read more

Two stars for my horrible shopping experience. This Mariano is inside a shopping building. For the parking, you have to press a button, get a parking ticket, after shopping, get a parking validation for free parking. Two time, lost my parking ticket tow times. Then I have to pay $26 for it. I'm not watching a movie nor dinning in , just got couple of snacks and got fine for $26? Of course, Mariano would not help me on that, but I'm not going to feel bad for a small piece of paper ticket anymore. Stay alert , don't lose it!!! read more

I love this Mariano's location, overall. Everything is organized relatively intuitively, and the customer service is A-OK. I like the pricing of Mariano's - high quality goods without a ridiculous price tag (usually). There's also enough of a brand variety where you can find a certain type of product sold cheaper than its counterparts. The produce is not as good as it could be. It's not as bad as it is at Jewel, but I wish it was a bit more fresh at times. Still, it's a mixed bag, so sometimes it's better than others, usually early in the day. read more

The offerings are great however I just moved to a new area in Chicago and went to the Mariano's on Ashland for the first time. The cashiers were laughing at the fact that I was buying gluten free items and were ignorant to the fact of what that meant. I like going to Mariano's during my lunch break. They have a great salad bar and soups. I think they especially do well with their dairy / cheese section. The only complaint I have is that I can never find a basket whenever I shop there. I asked the store clerk the other day, and they helped me find one...but a store of this size should be well-stocked with shopping baskets. I only bring it up because it happens consistently. Everyone who works there is very helpful and Mariano's is usually very well-stocked with all other food items. read more

Not all Mariano's are created equal and this is one of the larger ones out there. I was bordering b/t 3 and 4 but i'm glad Yelp makes you commit as there are no half stars awarded. With that, it's def A-Ok. And that's mostly from the cleanliness, spacious layout among two floors and the fact you can sit and eat, grab a cocktail if you wish. As for its primary purpose, *actual* grocery shopping, I'm finding myself less and less at any Mariano's except for specialty/certain items bc Aldi and TJ's is usually getting my business for all of my basics and beyond; it just doesn't make sense for me to pay more when cheaper, similar and better can be found elsewhere. Oh and a final note: My heart almost stopped when I saw they had a "Trail Mix Bar" bc I'm a bit OCD with my obsession with finding and creating the *perfect* Trail/Snack/Nut Mix. Alas, it was just average and didn't really have many things I actually like. Boo for that but it's purely subjective so consider that. read more

The Mariano's grocery store is fine, but the "free" parking in the New City building is problematic. Today I lost my validated parking ticket while in the Mariano's store. I was told that Mariano's doesn't control the garage, and thus was unable to supply a second validated ticket. One of the Mariano's clerks offered to help me scour the floor of the store for a dropped ticket, which was very nice. I did it myself, but was unable to find the ticket. The garage staff informed me that I would have to pay $6 to exit the garage with my car. I paid and went home, where I found my ticket in one of my shopping bags. Upon returning to the garage for a refund of the $6, I was informed that no refunds are given once one leaves the garage. According to the attendant, this lost ticket/refund request situation is an everyday occurrence at the New City garage! I plan to dispute the credit card charge (this is a pretty clear case of unjust enrichment), but shame on the garage for its behavior. read more

I went to this location twice in the last two days. It has a nice layout a decent selection. On the first day, a woman in checkout service was completely delightful and helpful. I had a strong first impression, set to return. Then today happened. Woman in the seafood section scolded me for waiting in front of a fish selection in the case that was on sale because there were other portions available prepackaged about 20 feet away. Not only bad merchandising strategy but I never saw them, and I like to pick out my preferred portions. I offered to take a look at them and she complained that she was already here to help me. She ignored the ones I asked for and packaged what she wanted me to have. Trying to pay it forward I said thank you very much, she ignored me, then took a few steps, stopped and shot me the nastiest glare. This is not an employee who is tired or stressed, this was someone who is hateful. I will never shop here again! I enjoy shopping for food, I enjoy food, I enjoy sharing interests in food, I cook a lot and for the most part the people I engage with in the food business are interesting, knowledgeable and delightful. I work in the area so I'm usually in here like every day to pick up something for lunch. I really love the smoothie bar they have there but the reason why I'm giving 3 stars for the store is because twice this week I've gone in for a smoothie and no one is there to make any. I've approached other staff to see if they can call someone to the smoothie bar and both occasions it was told to me "I think the person might be late for work." It's kind of hard to believe that a decently sized location like Marianos would only have 1 staff member trained to make smoothies but I really love the location just wish they would have someone consistently there so I can order. read more
