Eh... Over the last three to four years, I hoped this Mariano's location would outgrow some of the problems they were experiencing from - what I assumed at the time - being a new location. The building was nice, the store layout was smart, they had lots of parking, the facilities were in good order, their selection was pretty good, and their prices were fair. They just seemed to lack a polished crew of employees, in some departments. I'd come here during various parts of the day - on and off peak - and it always seemed like they were struggling to get goods on the shelves. While the aisles and common areas were all swept clean, the shelves often looked to be in disarray. While I get that things get mixed up easily during peak shopping hours; an hour or two after peak shopping, shelves should mostly be straightened by now. A little disarray from a new crew is understandable, as they are still learning the store layout and customer habits... Years later, though, it still seems to be a problem at this Mariano's store. Prepared food quality is mixed at the hot bar. Sometimes the food looks good, but - increasingly - the quality seems to be getting poorer. Again, regardless of the time of day, it seems like they aren't restocking the hot bar fast enough. It's not uncommon for several stations to be nearly or completely empty, and the remaining portions seemingly overheated. The gelato bar staff is good, but still slower than I would expect by now from and experienced crew. Their BBQ is decent for a grocery store, but I'd rather take out from City BBQ or Real Urban BBQ. Their baked goods are decent quality, at least, though I haven't tried anything to-order yet. The sushi bar is pretty good, as is the pizza counter. The rest of the store is about as good as to be expected from Mariano's. They have a vast selection of wine and spirits. I'm not a cheese guy, but they have a wide selection of cheeses to pick through. Their butcher and seafood seem to be pretty good, with fresh-looking cuts and very reasonable prices. If you can get past the problems they seem to have with stocking and refacing goods on shelves, the rest of their grocery and pharmacy options are good. Their check-out staff seems to be quite good, too. I just wish that - in the intervening years - they could have improved when it came to the other aspects of maintaining the store. It's by no means terrible, but I feel like these issues make this the least-good Mariano's in the area. I wonder if there isn't a high employee turnover rate. Most of the problems seem like one of inexperience, and I bet it can be hard if they struggle to keep experienced staff on - maybe they're being moved to other Mariano's stores? If they're convenient, I recommend the Mariano's in Bannockburn instead. In the immediate area, I prefer shopping at the nearby Trader Joe's. They are a fraction of the size, but they curate their limited selection well and the staff operates like a well-oiled machine. read more

Happened yet again! Overcharged by the deli department. I don't know if it's a scam or poor training. Ordered a small container of the yellow potato salad that was on special for $2.99/lb, and they were nice enough to charge me for the Steakhouse Potato Salad at $5.49/lb. I was the only customer at the deli counter, so it's not like they were too busy to pay attention to details like getting the price right. Aaarrgh! read more

Our beach-themed bday cake had detailed palm trees, a jelly cover for the ocean, lovely flowers and seashells, plus sand sugar for the beach. I'm reviewing them on their grocery pickup-not I like or hate Mariano's. First, thank you to them for offering this. We're very grateful that you do this during the Covid lockdown. The attention to detail was great. All fruit/vegs were ripe-no olive green bananas. They separated bags by fresh vegs, meat/fish, frozen, then mix of cans/boxes for similar types of items ex cereal/breakfast. They had mask/gloves on & stood back from the car window when we were paying. Easy to pay without really touchy anything. They're great. read more

My son and I eat dinner at Mariano's 4 times a week. The reason is that when I get off work, I take my son to practice and he's done at 7 so there is no time to go home and eat. At Mariano's there is amazing, healthy, fresh, hot food and a salad bar. It's affordable and good. We can eat brisket, sushi, salad, tacos, it's all there. My ONLY complaint is that the tables to eat at are filthy. Every time we go to sit down the tables are covered with food residue, crumpled napkins, etc. Time after Time one thing that's always consistent are the filthy table tops. I wish someone would wipe the tables. If that were to happen, I would give 5 stars read more

Stopped by about an hour before they close and it was pretty quiet. Their layout is a little different from most grocery stores and their frozen selection is not huge, but they have a pretty decent selection of fresh foods and a huge prepared food area with salads, hot food, pizza, etc. They also have quite a selection of cheese and alcohol. It's stocked and similar to other Mariano's and the staff is pretty friendly. read more

Recent experience at this store has resulted in my removal of two stars. Today, produce stock and store cleanliness were the issues. Produce was very lacking and all over the floor were pieces of produce. Squashed grapes, onion peels, a mound of lettuce....stuff on the floor all over the place The celery was limp, acorn squash was gone, tomatoes over ripe.... After picking up the produce, the floors could use a nice scrubbing. 10 AM. We also planned to enjoy the hot food bar and man, they are really into fried food! Purchased crab legs from this locations they smelled like bleach. Called in asked if this was normal and was told by the seafood department that it was perfectly normal because the solution they used to clean the crab sometimes gives off a bleach smell. Then I googled it and found out that's not the case! I could of killed a few people at my party because of the seafood manager at this store. Spoke to the store manager Darian, he was not help he said I should NOT eat the crab and to throw it out and blamed the seafood manager for giving me false information and he was going to talk to him about it. Of all the grocery stores in the area, I hate this one the least. So there's that. I do generally like Mariano's. They have good selection, great produce and prices are cheaper than some of the other area stores and reasonably comparable to Jewel. It's not super convenient for me, but if I need to do a big shopping trip, this Mariano's is my #1 destination. The main problem, IMO, is the store layout. The checkout area, in particular, is impossible. There's no way for more than one cart to unload at any checkout line at a time (short belts), which means the lines can get really backed up. It often takes as long just to check out as it did to do all of my shopping. Also, it's a huge store, so if you miss something, you might have a pretty long walk to go back and retrieve it later! Mostly, though, I just wish that this store was more convenient to where I live! read more

At about 2:25pm today, July 24, 2022, I went thru the self-checkout line, trying to purchase 15-pack of Goose Island IPS, mildew cleaner, a bag of apple cinnamon bagels, and four boxes of store brand breakfast bars. You can look it up on your cameras. I was wearing a cap, a multi-colored plaid shirt, and I have a gray goatee. The first kiosk I visited was not working, so I had to go back in line for the next available kiosk. The next one seemingly worked, I first scanned the beer, then everything else, carefully bagging everything, and I slid my charge card into the appropriate slot. As the alcohol is an age-restricted item, I had to be approved. I had to summon, after waiting for one minute, someone to approve me. A tall young man came forward. After giving my date of birth, he looked at the screen, then he pointed at my bagged items, and he said, "Excuse me sir, did you scan these?" I replied, "Yes." His response was, "Then why aren't they showing on the screen?" Really now? I was going to defend myself, but they I told Mr. Subtle Accusation, "I'm done with Mariano's, I will but this stuff someplace else, and you can put those items away." After all, I already endured one defective kiosk at Mariano's Northbrook, perhaps there are two. Or more. I left quickly the store but came back. I was trying to find a manager, but the only person I could find was a man who walked out of the customer service office. I told explained my story. He said, "I'm sorry that you had a bad experience." And I told him, "Look for my Yelp review." Well, here it is. And I then drove to the Jewel-Osco in Skokie and purchased those same items. Am I making that up? Fine, believe it if you'd like, but attached is my receipt for those aforementioned items. My daughter works nearby to Mariano's Northbrook, she has lunch there regularly. I have stopped going to this store completely. The manager is not a nice person. Not even a smile. Hopefully that has changed over the last year and he is gone. Asked for a sample of an item at the deli, a seemingly nice elderly worker gave it to me. When I said how delicious it was, he said "well, don't have an orgasm!" I was stunned esp. in this day and age that this still exists. I did not report as he was elderly and didn't want him to lose his job which was due to obvious lack of training, which everyone in that store needs desperately! Trickle down effect, starting with the horrendous manager. In addition to terrible employees, their stock, even before covid, was extremely limited. So many general items not carried. Many friends have tried this store and always go back to Jewel. They are friendly, helpful with everything and go out of their way. And have product! Customer service is key. Marianos is missing the most important ingredient! Continuing with Jewel! Marianos is a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

Being out in the burbs, I like having a location that I can walk to. It puts a different spin on shopping though in terms of what you are willing to lug home. I have yet to digress to the old person grocery wheeler but not ruling it out entirely ;) I just discovered Nob's (the bar in the back next to the beer/wine/booze) is featuring a new promotion that is out of sight, $2.50 beers 4-6pm M-F. Hard to beat that price for premium beers. Oh ladies! $10 bottomless mimosas on Sat & Sun. Yes, you did read that right, $10 bottomless. (Maybe I'll see you there Yelp NS ;) You just might need a grocery cart to wheel yourself out of the store lol. The way I see it, the biggest challenge you may have is how to justify your prolonged presence to your fellow shoppers ;) If you get the munchies, the bar has some yummy snacks to nosh on, or you could put your order in at the meat/seafood counter and have them grill you up whatever your heart desires. If on your way out you experience the piano player rendering 'After the gold rush' NY - be sure to smile and wave because it does not get any better than that - Cheers! read more

This Mariano's is so convenient, and has that brand spanking new allure. I had super high hopes that I could find everything I need in this store. It does have its redeeming qualities - unique bakery items - most of the bread we've tried is pretty good. The specialty cookies were just ok. I don't love their deli meat selection (no boars head or Applegate) not a fan of their house brand (Roundys). It is also perplexing that they do not carry some of the same items that I can find at the Mariano's on Willow. For such a large store I would expect the produce department to have a bigger variety (and better quality) - every carton of strawberries I inspected on a recent visit had a moldy culprit :( Now for the good - the floral department is amazing! Great prices and good quality flowers. Still love their fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, gelato & Vero coffee. Almost every soup is delicious. Large prepared food section, Sushi bar is pretty good for grocery store sushi. Appreciate their loyalty perks - purchase x coffees, smoothies, gelato, sushi & get one free. I've found the cashiers and baggers to be pleasant and appreciate that Mariano's hires and trains people with special needs. read more

Also at peak shopping times on weekends, your employees should probably not park in the spots that are close that should be for customers. (An employee was having their smoke break in their car right next to the cart coral, windows were open, that's how I knew). I wrote a review on 8/30 and several weeks later, handicapped stall in ladies room still not fixed. When brought to another manager last week, Dennis, he put in a work order - said it would only be a day or two but again last night, no lock on door and another stall has no toilet paper holder at all. This Mariano's is a mess. At about 7 pm last night, I witnessed in front of customers an argument between the two guys working in the butcher area, all self service lanes closed, very few options in BBQ area and and a lot of staff standing around. Some folks are great and work hard....but get your act together. Managers do your job- work with your staff, give feedback not in front of customers, and get the place stocked with food... and how about fix the ladies room after two months of customers complaints. I've been to several marianos and this is one of my favorites. I enjoy the options they have available during lunch such as the salad bar and the hot food section. The BBQ food is always high quality and the pricing is great. The other thing I enjoy here is the bar area near the walk in cooler. I really like being able to have a beer while I shop. This store is huge so it will take awhile to check everything out, but it is always kept orderly and I've had nothing but positive experiences read more

Had My families prescriptions transferred to this pharmacy and it is the worst decision I could have made. This location never has prescription ready on time, records of receiving prescriptions or the medication in stock. No follow up phone calls or notifications. This pharmacy needs to get a new manager if and when you do get your prescription double check it these employees are not professionals. read more

I was surprised to see so many mediocre and negative reviews. I haven't been to many Mariano's but I do like this one better than the Vernon Hills store. I found the service to be very good, almost too much so. The selection was very good as well. While they do have a large selection of prepared foods I would like them to be better. Somehow even Costco is able to produce really fine tasting prepared food while this place is much more hit or miss. read more

This store has gotten progressively worse. Today I went in with a list and came out with ONE item. Nothing was in stock and no rain checks. The people are either rude and / or not knowledgeable. Today I was talking to a person at the customer service desk and a MANAGER came over and interrupted us for the address and phone number of the store! REALLY???? Careful buying any food here that's not sealed when it comes into the store...my husband and I have had terrible food poisoning from the way the deli meat is handled (who knows if there are gloves worn/hands washed - ick) and on a few occasions I have seen FILES in the bakery case! I've heard people complain, and nothing changes. The fish does not look like it is well kept, either. After a few bad experiences, I'm going to avoid this place and will stick to Trader Joe's and Sunset, which are much cleaner and treat their employees better! read more

Disgraceful- women's handicapped stall has been missing a lock for 2 months. When I asked a manager, he said they were waiting for a part... for 2 months. It isn't that hard to go to the hardware store for a new lock and is a disgrace for people with disabilities. Given this store many chances. Employees don't seem friendly or happy. No one has greeted or spoke to me in my visits. Cart guy hangs around outside in cart stall smoking cigarettes doesn't say hello, doesn't smile, doesn't offer to take my cart. There is one young man working as a bagger who talks to himself continuously. He obviously has special needs which I don't take offense to but the problem is the stories or "tales" he is telling our loud some are deeply disturbing. I will do my shopping elsewhere. read more

I'm glad someone else had a bad experience at this store. I had a horrible experience here, that I felt wasn't appropriate to share, but now I do. When the store first opened, I like a robot, went three days in a row. Impressed, wowed. Wine, hot bar, sushi, bakery, beautiful. Then it happened. I walked into the store, and right at the entry way, I thought someone spilled pork chops, meatballs and gravy on the floor, but quickly it was confirmed: someone had gone #2, on the floor in the store. It's like a car accident, you can't help but look. There are some special needs people who live on Skokie Blvd. The culprit. Anyways, the employees were all standing around in awe, I don't blame them. But 2 minutes became 15 minutes, and that's when I realized that this was my last time at this store. Managers, cashiers, nobody took charge. It just sat there. Granted, it was disgusting, I thought to myself, if this happened at Sunset Foods, this situation would be corrected in seconds. And that, my friends sums up my experience at this store. And this is why I won't cheat on Sunset ever again. I understand the store was new at the time, and that this situation was out of there control, I get it. If someone from the management responds I'll be happy to erase this, I just want to share it with my fellow yelpers. read more
