I was looking for a specific item and online this store was the only option . On a Tuesday evening the store was pretty empty, which gave me time to browse. The produce, meats and all items were nicely displayed. They have a variety of higher end products, a different variety than at other grocery chains. They do offer prepared items ,and all looked delicious. The cheese selections offered many varieties of cheeses, and they had small charcuterie boards already made. There was no line to check out and service was fast and efficient . The parking lot was a bit confusing for a first time shopper. I would definately stop in again. read more

I'm familiar with the Heinens just from my time shopping around the Cleveland area so I found it intriguing that these stores existed in the far northern suburbs. Staff here was really nice! They had plenty of energy drinks that I loved from their Ohio stores. Aisles were clean and staff was friendly. Curious how an Ohio grocery chain has invaded the Northern suburbs of Chicago. The chain is pricey and in some manners alike Mariano's. I wish they offered more organics. Most of their produce is unmarked so I assume the majority is gmo. As far as groceries, they offer many product lines. For those looking for specifics, they offer some unique products not commonly found at stores like Jewel. For instance specialty brands of vitamins, bone broth, kombucha, seasonings, and more. Is there something specific you desire? Meeting with their buyers, might yield your favorites in-store. (Bone broth is some pricey foo-foo. It's great if you're willing to spend the coin to make that dish extra special. Packed with intense flavors.) The store is small and serves the community in needs. The building is modern and aisles shortened, unlike grocer chains more popular. Which makes navigating the store easy and opens you up to seeing more of their offerings. Something funny but probably popular in those parts, an endcap devoted to Jello puddings. If you find yourself becoming even an occasional customer, it's worth joining their free loyalty program. Most sale priced items are available to any customer. But there are monthly perks that come with the free program. I started coming here because they carry a specific brand of kombucha that I buy in bulk. Revive Kombucha produced in Petaluma, Ca. (https://www.revivekombucha.com/) I'm still in talks with the company to sell me kegs and until that comes to pass, I'll spend about a Benji+ per month on bottles. The butcher area is so pretty. It's like the Victoria secrets of butchering. All their meats are nicely vacuumed packed too. Meats are packed and situated with descriptions that can help even the novice cook find meal planning a cinch. Their cheese "arena" is solid. There are bulk cheeses as well as specialty brands. I'll often rummage through the cheese scraps (basket) to see what tasty finds are available. That basket is often filled with tasty, affordable, scraps. Pricing from a few bucks to less than a dollar. All kinds, soft, hard, semi-hard. Keep an eye out for their smoked hot pepper cheddar. It is good. I hope they keep revive. Beautiful grocery store -- but I'm not sure if I'm really as happy about this Heinen's location versus other ones. Since Heinen's is on the high end for price (closer to Whole Foods than Mariano's), I expect a bit more out of the store to justify these prices and draw me away from lower price alternatives. This Heinen's is smaller than other locations I've been to, with a parking lot that's not really the most friendly to navigate through. There's less selection of items, with a mix of conventional, natural, and organic throughout the store. As usual, the displays are impeccable, perfectly stacked, and arranged in a very attractive manner. In fact, if you place any items out of place, you can expect these to be restocked quickly and quietly -- almost like you're shopping in a museum. Seriously, Heinen's is like a work of art in how precise it operates and how beautiful the store and its displays look. The lighting is also great, layout is logical, and the aisles are pleasant to walk through. They also stock a good selection of high quality items, similar to what you'd find in whole foods -- but with the smaller store size here, I would've rather they focus more on the premium items rather than providing a complete assortment of items. They're not going to be the cheapest on the standard items, so i would've been happier if they only provided items between premium to very premium quality or more selection of specialty items. I would've liked to see more international items, low-sugar / low-salt options, items from local brands/farms, etc. The location does do well though with stocking Jeni's Graeter's, Halo Top, and other premium ice cream brands. The meat is wrapped perfectly, with no unattractive looking cuts or noticeable oxidation. The salad bar is arranged very neatly with plenty of options. The produce section is impressive, with a beautiful array of colors from the different items. There's tons of prepared food options at reasonable prices, rivaling the quality of local restaurants. The bakery is super impressive as usual (probably the only main chain rivaling Mariano's in quality), with items that are just as good as most dedicated bakeries. Overall, a good place to get premium food items -- but I wish they'd made better use of their limited space. read more

I've gone here several times and to be honest, it may be a very clean store but the guy and girl that work the fish dept. are the RUDEST people I've ever encountered. Sarcastic every single time, very impolite and don't bother asking them a question without getting a response as if you're asking a stupid question. For example, I was in there and asked if the crabmeat and shrimp salad was real crabmeat. The woman says "Nooooo", so you see the price? It wouldn't be that cheap if it was real. In all actuality, I wasn't even considering he price until I knew if it was real or not. I won't be going back there again. The guy that works there, can't stand his job. It's clearly obvious. Have been shopping here more and more since it opened. Yes, more expensive for some things than Jewel, but far superior in so many ways, it is worth the longer drive for a better shopping experience and food quality. As another review stated, "The produce section is impressive, with a beautiful array of colors from the different items. There's tons of prepared food options at reasonable prices, rivaling the quality of local restaurants. The bakery is super impressive..." The prepared foods are becoming a real temptation. For most trips we grab soup and or a sandwich to eat in their dining area. The little French bread loaf with the soups is a fav. At the prepared counter the choices are many and if they have pepper steak we buy it. Sorry, if they are out, we possibly took all of it, There is a frozen Sticky Rice, by a company name which starts with I. Larger amount in package than what I usually have from Trader Joe, so there is enough with sometimes leftovers. (Not that there is much chance of there being any peper steak leftover.) The best customer service, and if you need help there are enough PLEASANT employees on the floor to take you to where you will find what has eluded you. No other stores seem to care how you fare after they tell you what aisle to look in, if you can even figure out the aisle numbering without that being a challenge too. Watch the sale prices, and the overall cost is comparable to other larger chains. Enjoy yourself, shopping here is actually pleasant. read more

Since Amazon bought Whole Foods and went WAY downhill from it's former days of glory, and since Kroger bought Mariano's and basically ruined it, to the point where their stores are so gross now that I won't even walk into a Mariano's anymore, this is pretty much the last grocery store chain that is somewhat decent. (NOTE: I didn't pick on Jewel because Jewel owns the fact that they are the "bargain bin" grocery store chain, and you know what you are getting into if you choose to shop there) Although I wouldn't go so far as to say that Heinen's is the "end all, be all" of grocery stores, they do a pretty damn good job, and should be commended for that. The stores are clean, they have a good selection of staples (cereal, paper goods, condiments, etc.), but they also have a fairly decent deli, meat department, and bakery...Customer service is also [relatively] excellent here, although with their competition, the bar is set VERY low. read more

Heinen's is a bit like Marianos and Whole Foods, selling and displaying high quality food. They have a great salad bar with some my favorite salads. I want to try the Blue Cheese potato salad! Their soups are great too. They have a neat wine and beer area where you can sample some of both for a price. I'm not sure exactly what coaxed this non-crowd person to come to opening day, but my hubby suggested we check it out and I went along with him...and we brought the kids. Won't do that again! Lots of samples today, so if you're looking for a meal, you can probably come out less hungry. To sum up our experience, my one son had so much anxiety at the soup tasting station because, "there are too many old people crowding everything!" And, he couldn't be more accurate. Wow was this place crowded with seniors looking for a free meal! I have nothing against seniors, but it was a little out of hand today for sure. Okay, back to my review. Here's my take on the place... Size: It's a big footprint with crowded aisles and not a lot of walking space. Parking: Poorly designed and someone will get run over in the lot. Chaos personified! Customer Service: The employees were stressed out looking, and though they sincerely wanted to smile and say hello, they just couldn't quite get there. Pricing: Similar to Marianos. Canned goods were priced cheaper than Jewel. Product: - Ginormous salad bar and cheese section. - Hot food bar looked good, but it was super packed with people. - An entire gluten free section - Huge wine section - Regular grocery store brands - Great produce section - decent size with a mix of organic and non-organic - Nice meat section - Great seating/cafe area so you can come and eat! My favorite part about this store...all the fun independent brands that are spread throughout the displays! Raw honey from Wisconsin. Several different types of peanut and almond butter. Fun olive oils and coffee brands. Different sauces. Sure, some of them are a bit pricey, but this is the Whole Foods part of the store. Will I shop here again? For the salad bar yes! However, it's a bit out of the way for us, so they come to Bannockburn, there's a good chance our out-of-the-way grocery trips will be spent at Marianos. We also still love Jewel because they close at midnight, and we've been known to do our shopping at 11pm. read more

5/5 because of the ambiance of Heinen's. I really love this grocery store, but could never afford to shop here on a weekly basis. It's close to where I work and I needed to grab a Mother's Day gift. Their flower/plant selection was great this year. Of course this was all I planned to get, but $75 bucks later Hubs and I finally made our way to check-out. We dropped a pretty penny on the prepared foods (soup station, build-you-own-salad and sushi) none of which I thought were any better than their competition (the less expensive Mariano's). Heinen's is great for grabbing a couple of things if I need them or specialty items, but no more. The nice customer service, clean parking lot and store left a positive impression. I think Glenview is a beautiful suburb, and I live nowhere near there, but I am seriously considering making the trek once a week to shop there; that's how much I love this store! It's much better than Mariano's and Whole Foods. There is a great variety of produce and the meat and fish is very fresh. The salad bar is spotless and everything is ultra-fresh and clean! Great little market-style grocery store. If you're looking for variety, look elsewhere. That's not the focus of Heinen's. However, they do have a solid selection of ready-to-eat foods, beer/wine/liquor, and healthy options. You just won't find cosmetics, pharmacy, etc here. For a neighborhood market, this place shines. They even serve beer and wine to enjoy while you shop. It really is a nice place to meander throughout as you gather your essentials for the week or just your meal for the evening. I went to get some of their pre made meals. I had checked Instacart and the selection looked great. But I wanted to see for myself. The outside of the store is beautiful, gorgeous mums and pumpkins for sale. Inside there was a great selection of groceries, all priced a few dollars higher than the exact same things elsewhere. But this location is so close to my home, I thought a few soups, pre made items like lasagna, cabbage rolls, etc would make my upcoming week easy for dinners. These pre made items looked disgusting. They looked like they had been sitting there for days, the presentation was horribly picked over. Boo. I really wanted to like this place. I was going to buy sone game day snack like pepperoni and cheese but with the super high prices, I realized I could buy them at Mariano's for about $6 less. I even got in line to buy them. The store has been open about 25 minutes, there were only two lines open and it was going slowwwwwww. I left empty handed. read more

The myriad selection and display of fresh fruit and vegetables is fantastic -- all of the various items clearly marked with name and nationality. I've always drove past heinens and always wanted to check it out. I heard great things about it from friends. Yesterday I was able to check it out and I was lucky that I did. Heinen's is a very eclectic produce store with high quality culinary products. The store is very neat and clean it's easy to navigate everything and they have a variety of food items. Their produce is high quality and tastes delicious and is fresh. They have a large assortment of health food items I was looking for that I wasn't able to find in other stores. I also noticed they carry items from local small businesses which is pretty neat and you can discover new things each time you shop there. They carry very beautiful flowers as well. We came in to check out this new store and freeload grocery samples and coupons, which is an honorable activity for a churl. This is a good store for Glenview, because there is no grocery serving the eastern part, nor the downtown district, of the village. Prior to Heinen's, the location was the site of an abandoned Dominick's store - and prior to Dominick's, various different grocery stores occupied this spot since the 1960s. Heinen's is a semi-upscale chain which has recently entered the Chicago market. The store most closely resembles Sunset Foods, a long-established small chain of upscale, but not hoity-toity, stores serving the North Shore. The store carries a lot of "gourmet" and specialty foods, and has a broad assortment of deli items catering the East Glenview demographic. Prices are a bit higher than Jewel, but I guess that you are paying for more personalized services. Mrs. B., an inveterate freeloader, stocked up on free sample coffee, wine, and other noshery while touring the store. The store does not reek of phony pretense and food faddery like Whole Paycheck, so I will give it a four star rating. Oh yeah, my wife added to her freebie reusable bag collection. This is the only Heinen's I've been to. First impression: Drop dead gorgeous. Lasting impression: Gorgeous and ummmm...great salad bar. Then, ahhh...I can't think of anything else. Analogy: You meet a good-looking person. You're struck with the attractiveness, newness and potential. Bronze skin and smileyness are nice. But they're doing it too much. The smiling. You think, "But can this person make me laugh?" You keep going out (going down the aisles) then you think, "Shouldn't something actually be funny before you laugh? What's with the fake laughing?" Then boredom descends. Your brain starts saying, "So what. They're nice from Ohio. They'll get a little more interesting down the road." Then you think, "Who am I kidding. They're one dimensional. The bronze skin and white smile are nice, but dammit I need more substance." Maybe people in the burbs like this, but if you grew up in Chicago with all it's vibrant and ethnic markets, things here at Heinen's are too bland. There were plenty of staff walking around and being responsive. Very friendly and professional. The store design is stunning and invites you to explore (unlike the new Fresh Thyme Market). Everything neat. Everything in it's place. Then you start to wonder, "What's Heinen's got that other stores don't have?" Nothing really. It's not introducing us to anything. The bakery is uninspiring. There are virtually NO local foods to be found. Lots of Ohio brands or Heinen's brands, but that's not good enough. People want to eat what local producers are making here in Illinois. Should we in Illinois feel good about buying Ohio brands? I'll try Heinen's again, but I keep thinking of the good-looking person analogy. There's nothing upstairs. read more

What can I say...this is our new favorite grocery store. Ever since they closed down "our" Dominick's on this site, we've been waiting for another local grocery store. You know, the kind of place where you run out for a gallon of milk, some bread, etc.? Well, our expectations were built up that something much more was coming to Glenview...and has Heinen's ever come through! Super friendly staff who really are knowledgeable about all the products. Hormone-free meats, free-range chickens, and an amazing selection. Pricey? Yeah, sort of, but this is a case where you apparently get what you pay for. Awesome selection of unusual brands when it comes to pasta sauces, coffees, breads, dairy items, etc. etc. Can't wait to try them all! This grocery store is so family oriented, everything from being greeted by friendly staff and being checked out by local teens. I once talked to a farmer at my train station, and found out that he was there to visit the store to make sure that his produce arrived in good shape. I also saw a couple of Italian suppliers talking to the wine guys at the store. It's all about quality. They get everything direct from farmers and wine makers, etc. I feel so blessed to have them in my neighborhood. The greatest grocery store ever! read more

Produce is good, owners seemed to care when they opened, but they did an awful job choosing staff. Almost every time I go, there is some major mistake a worker makes. It seems almost every employee must have never worked at a grocery store before. On a recent salad bar trip, I noticed the mushrooms were unwashed, covered with dirt. Disgusting! This place carries stuff in "normal people" quantities that Costco carries in bulk, which is a plus. I like this store but it's quite pricey, which is a minus. The olive oil/balsamic vinegar bar? A plus! $6 for 2 bunches of leeks?!? Minus! Fresh seafood, plus! Not much of an organic section- minus! I could go on for a while, but net = OK! I don't have a problem coming here if I need something and it's convenient if I am already close, but I don't think I would make a special trip here. Prices are a *smidge* under Whole Foods, but without the organic stuff. I think the main competitor to Heinen's is Mariano's. Quality here is pretty good for everything else, so I am sure because it's so close to my train station that i will be making more frequent trips there in the future. read more

I love Heinen's! Granted I am only shopping/cooking for 2 but I love the store. Occasionally there are a few things I can't/don't get there but I love the produce department (and I have 2 guys I can always count on to help me). I also like their meat/fish department as well as the prepared foods and sandwiches. I don't find their prices any higher than Jewel and prefer Heinen's any day. People are friendly and I can ALWAYS find someone to help (unlike what another reviewer said). I also like the smaller size and the fact that when there's a sale you don't have to buy multiples to get the sale price!! read more
