Place has been around for a long time, my mom and grandmother have been coming here way before I was born. You can never go wrong with their cakes, so good. Variety of options from flavors to sizes and custom cakes. Customer service here has always been great, never had a bad experience at Maria's bakery. You wont be disappointed. Very consistent. They make a great white cake with strawberries. It's classic great for birthdays weddings anniversaries whatever. They're able to whip it up for 30 people in 2 to 3 hours. That's pretty darn amazing. Obviously you need to call and make sure they're not overwhelmed with business, but the last two times I got cakes for them. It was the best got plenty of positive compliments on how good the cake was from so many friends and family who tasted it. What else can you ask for? People who work there are very nice, accommodating, and really just down to good people. Support them. read more

2/3/22 From the outside, with its metal curtain/gate facade, it certainly looks unwelcoming & unappealing. This store has been a community fixture for so many years & it is well known in the neighborhood to boast many yummy delights. Been patronizing this bakery many times over the years, passed by it many times before back when my mom worked at the old LAC-USC county hospital-yes, that huge monstrosity of a building that stands over all of Boyle Heights! Never disappointed in my purchases & has fed the crew, both dayshift & nightshift, with many wonderful & aesthetically pleasing cakes. As I entered the premises (wondering how many years it has been since I've gone in), the kindly lady behind the counter asks what she help me with. I told her that everything looks so good & it might some time to decide which to purchase for the crew. I've been meaning to drop off a special piece for the ortho department at Keck Med. Center of USC (nursing unit, 6 North) for the wonderful job taking great care of me. I have to make sure to bring something for each shift (knowing fully well that nightshift doesn't get much, usually only leftovers from the day). Everyone MUST know, the nightshift has a special place in my heart, don't ever think that all patients are asleep at night-in fact, a lot of unspeakable things happen at night that makes the crew even more stellar. NOTE: bring a separate piece for nightshift** Many of my fellow/co-workers buy from Maria's for our unit's special occasions: birthdays, baby showers or for just enjoying sweets. You can call ahead to order or try your luck & get one that's already made from their fridge. The staff there has been very patient & accommodating. As I mentioned before, it could definitely use a makeover (from maybe 29 years ago LOL). It looks very rundown, otherwise it could've earned an extra star. I love this little bakery! I have been coming here for years and was first introduced to this bakery by my mom who used to work at LA County. The cakes are tasty and fresh. They fill the cakes with a lot of fruit if you choose a fruit cake. We love to get the mango since they fill it with mango in and out. I also love that the cakes are not sickeningly sweet. This place is very run down. We were there for a pastry named Napoleon. They make the best since 30 years ago. They closed out their retail stores and open this location and selling napoleon wholesale to various Chinese markets. They also carry birthday cakes and we haven't tried their cake yet. Napoleon still good but too expensive. $9 for 4 small pieces. I would think when you can rent such a rundown place (inside and outside). They should pass the savings to the consumer. Because of that, we only go maybe once a year. Supermarkets sell cheaper than them. I don't think they care. read more

This bakery has been around for many decades which is why I decided to buy a cake here. As a kid they had a good reputation of having delicious cakes. Don't know if their recipe has changed or my taste buds but for the money spent on the cake I was expecting it to be a lot more delicious. I ordered chocolate banana and the chocolate barely had any flavor, and the bananas were scarce. They had a lot of orders going out this particular Saturday so it seems lots of people are still enjoying these cakes. I even had to wait 20 min for my cake to be ready so it was a little disappointing that it was not worth the wait. read more

We just love this place and ALWAYS get our cakes for all occasions here. You can't beat how light and moist their strawberry and vanilla cakes are. And the best part is they use a whipped cream frosting instead of buttercream which is by far so much better in my opinion. The older Hispanic woman who supposedly takes down custom cake orders is extremely unprofessional and rude. She seemed as if she didn't want us to place an order. We went 2 weeks in a row and were turned away due to remodeling (totally ok!) so I called Saturday morning to ensure that they were open again and that I was able to go in to place and order and I was told YES. When we got there the nice young lady who works the front greeted and attended us and was ready to take our custom cake order when the old rude one comes out, proceeds to butt into our convo, asks the date we needed the cake and lets us know that apparently she only takes orders Monday through Thursday (orders she literally herself writes down). I let her know that I work Monday through Friday until 5pm (she said they close at 4:30 even though google says 5pm) and she was "willing" to make an exception if I came back on Sunday so she could jot down the order when she was literally there and could've jotted it down that moment, as there was no one else there waiting to purchase or order anything. She is an overall unpleasant woman who is pushing out potential customers. There are plenty of other bakeries with cakes that taste better and are more affordable! We ended up getting a three tier custom cake order for 65 people at Diamond Bakery in Monterey Park - the cakes taste so much better, they actually let you sample the cakes, the cakes are half the price, and they treat customers with decency and respect! Please looks for another bakery and save yourself some time and gas. Do better Maria's... this woman is driving away many customers. read more

For years we have been getting these delicious cakes from this bakery. I have no complaints on their cakes and desserts, but of the employee. This is the first time seeing her, she looked in her mid 20's wearing blue earphones. She was very rude to my family when we asked for a cake. We rang the bell and she gave us attitude saying, "I'm right here." She was busy baking so we assumed someone else was going to attend us. Throughout the interaction her body language just made me feel uncomfortable. She asked for the money and just left the boxed cake at the counter and went back to doing her thing without giving it to us and with no exchange. We were rather confused whether she was done or not so I took the initiative to grab the cake say goodbye. Beautiful cakes!! Their prices are more than reasonable and they'll take smaller orders with 24 hr advanced notice. Whenever I bring a cake from Maria's there's always 2 things that happen: NO leftovers and people wanna know where the cake is from. The cakes are fluffy and light, like their fluffy, light whip style topping. You can bring in a photo to be put on top of the cake. On a scale of 1-10 I would give this bakery a 2 for Palmiers. They came under cooked. I had to re-bake them at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes to get them to have a caramelized look. when I received the package the palmiers were white and very little caramalization. This is a small place and if you pass by you may not know it's there. But this bakery is the best ! We ordered a fresh strawberry white cake for my sons 2 nd birthday. It was amazing, not sweet like the cakes you find in the markets. The frosting is excellent, the cake itself is moist. Perfect! Must order in advance if you want it decorated. I ordered a cake and picked it up on a Saturday unfortunately I will have to report what I experienced..I don't know where they find these uneducated people they hire..there was a female Hispanic by the name of Crystal (so she says)..she was the most rude and ignorant person I have come across... a homeless man entered into the building and she began to act very aggressive and was cursing uncontrollably, the homeless man had feces all over himself and she came around the corner and started to spray lysol everywhere, my cake was still exposed and opened..and when I asked her to please place a cover over it she did not want to after convincing her sadly ...she then made a half made cover..this was so tacky... I then asked her if she could open the door for me to be able to get out the door and she said No..wow very rude and unprofessional..this is bad business to have an employee act in this manner... I write these reviews to bring light to how some of these places are and what kind of staff they hire... I will not be coming to this bakery anymore and will upgrade. The rest of the people that work there have been very polite..this woman needs to take a training on customer services and work ethics and respect including anger management. .. be careful of who you are hiring in these places and do a better background check. To the owners you might want to have a talk with this employee "I hope so...you dont want to lose buisness"..she makes people feel very uncomfortable. I'm not the first I have been told this female displays this kind of behavior most of the time. I write what I experience I don't have to sugar coat anything. For the past 9 years (since I had my daughter) I have been coming here because their cakes are delicious. The bread is never too dry, and the fruit is fresh! Frosting not too sweet. However, this last cake from a couple of weekends ago was too dry. Luckily I don't have a picky family but if I continue to do business I expect the quality to remain.
