If I am in the area, I try to stop and buy Mexican sweet bread from El Gallo. They were established in 1949 and the recipes have not changed. I was going to my friend's house and bought Pumpkin-filled Empanadas and Jalepeno Cheese rolls to share. This bakery make the best buttery and flakey rolls I every had. Ask for the "Cuerno de Mantequilla." It resembles a croissant, no need to add any butter it is the main ingredient and already baked in it. You may buy individual pieces or by the dozen for $35. They are worth every penny and calorie. In the center of the shop is a "cart" with assorted pre-packed cookies and pastries ready to go. This is a good way to sample a variety of their goods and discover which are your favorites. If you want true and traditional Mexican bread, I highly recommend this bakery. The bread at El Gallo is amazing -- Unfortunately, the customer service is consistently unwelcoming. On my last visit, the line was out the door and we stood there for several minutes without any acknowledgment. No greeting, no eye contact -- it felt like customers didn't matter. I also witnessed a customer politely trying to add to his order, repeatedly saying "excuse me," and the worker ignored him and walked away. She only came back when she felt like it. It was uncomfortable to watch and really reflects the overall experience. Great bread, but very poor service. I hope management addresses this because it takes away from what should be a great neighborhood bakery. read more

I am still a HUGE fan of this bakery as the Mexican sweetbread is sooooo good. There are many varietals to choose from, all fresh, delicious, and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. The ladies who work behind the counter are all friendly, hardworking, and ready to serve all customers. In addition to the bread, they also offer champurado, café de olla, milk, sodas, and beverages. My girlfriend and I were eating nearby and she has been wanting to try El Gallo Bakery so we went right after breakfast. We ordered a variety of their pan dulce and we each got an order of their champurrado. Everything we tried was amazing but their payaso was the best thing I've consumed in my life. If this bakery was nearby, I would instantly buy out all of their payaso and leave a happy man. The champurrado had the perfect consistency and was really good. The señora helping us was amazing and offered their best sellers. I speak muy poquito so I didn't understand 90% of what she and my girlfriend were saying but that's no problem. I love love love this place and can't wait to be back soon! read more

"Pan Dulce" pastries were Very fresh, very tasty, prepared using all traditional ingredients and spices. Hot Champurrado drink was also made using traditional fresh ingredients! Service was quick, cheerful and polite. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the store. read more

I went there with my dad this morning because I was getting some lab tests at KP, anyways, I clearly wanted something sweet. I was recommended this cute bakery by an ELA local and they did not disappoint! The bread is so fluffy and delicious! I ended up buying more than I should but wow you need to stop by and get some conchitas or other pastries and a nice hot cafe de olla. There is parking right in front too on the street, so easy to access. The individual helping us told us that they have been there since the 1940's and many people come from other areas in CA and even out of state to try their baked goods. Definitely coming back! read more

I paid $50 for a rosca and was surprised by how small it was for the price. When I asked if a refund was possible because it felt overpriced, the owner was rude and brushed me off, saying they don't give refunds. Overall, very poor customer service. read more

There is one special piece my mother (92 years old) loves however the quality of this piece has decreased a WHOLE lot in past year or more. We travel from Orange County because we have been patronizing this business for over 35 years and now have to face the hard truth it isn't worth it anymore. they have lost an entire families business. Customer service is a 1. When you have 4 employees not helping but one and see the line out the door no one else steps in to help? Tamales were a 1- hardly any meat lacked flavor. (Costcos are better) I don't know why people are complaining about showing ID it's for the protection of you and the owner so get over it. The bread appears soft. I had been craving cuernitos de mantequilla. Now I used to work near this lovely place and my coworker used to bring this yummy pan to the office, everyone would go crazy for it!!! Ok so I had my husband swing by and grab me a few or four lol!! He said the staff were helpful because he didn't know what to look for but I sent him pics and called him to make sure he got the right thing!!! The were just like I remembered DELICIOUS ! I hada. Bad experience today . Customer service was horrible I went around 3:00pm and waiting to order and there was only 1 customer. The worker was very slow and talking with Customer and wasting time . I was waiting for 13 min to order bread. No one acknowledged my wife and I . No one services us or even said anything another worker was walking a round and did not even acknowledge us . The pan dulce is so good and fresh which makes the bread taste so good! They also sell some prepackaged chili verde, rice and beans which is great if you forget your lunch. The staff is friendly! The only thing I will say is parking in limited and the lines can be long so be sure to give yourself time if you're in a rush. The ambiance isn't a sit down place, more of a grab and go! When I go I ask for the buttery over sized croissant. I had to look it up, it's called cuerno de mantequilla and it's a Mexican butter horn pastry, similar to a croissant but typically denser and sweeter. The best bread ever...there goes my diet. read more

Feeling a little nostalgic was in the area with my daughters, who absolutely love this place they brought me back. We used to bring them when they were kids... I have not been here in like 20 years. Has not changed the Concha. They are so good soft delicious and moist taste, so good in your mouth. Ordered the bread of course had to have some of that. The bread is so soft and delicious. This can't be the iconic place everyone says it is... Walked in in Saturday afternoon, first step in we were overwhelmed with the smell of fabuloso, plus NO A/C ... It's a bakery!!!! You cant drench your place with the cleaning chemicals of fabuloso. As you can guess, pan dulce taste like fabuloso... Not kidding , threw away the whole bag... This is not the place. The cafe de olla used to be worth coming by, but now they require ID for ALL transactions including debit cards and tap pay (Apple). The signage states it's specifically for credit cards, but when you approach the counter they said it's for any payment except cash. Genuinely disappointed with the customer service and how they're going about this. read more

We also purchased a rosca this year as we do every year from this bakery it has been our favorite for years. We were highly disappointed at the size and cost of it this year, but we like the taste and this is one of our family traditions. We ignored all that. We enjoyed dinner and now our favorite part, who will find the baby. We sliced and sliced and sliced. To our surprise NO BABY. Don't know what happened, absolutely ruined our night as this is the best part of the rosca. Not happy at all read more

I think they changed the baker. The breads are usually ALL delicious. Came from out of town and headed there first to get my fix. The bolillo, biscuits and the pumpkin empanadas were terribly dry. The pumpkin was literally a doughy ball. Will try again next visit. read more

They perfectly warmed both body and soul on a chilly LA morning. If I lived nearby, I'd eat these every day! We also tried the yuzu cream pan, which was also pretty epic. The topping was a little crunchy, complementing the soft bread and creamy and smooth tart filling. This is definitely my new favorite Japanese bakery in the US! The chocopie barely had any filling, just a thin layer of marshmallow and jam. It honestly felt like they used most of the marshmallow for their Dubai choco cookie because it's probably more profitable, instead of properly filling the chocopie. If that's the case, it's better not to sell it at all than serve something like that. The dalgona latte was also disappointing. With ice, the drink only filled to the bottom third line of the cup marking. Clearly, they skimped on the milk. There was also a weird moment when I paid. My total was $15.25 and I paid cash, but I was given $4.75 in change. When I said it should be $5, she seemed confused and asked what I meant. I told her I literally gave you a quarter right now, and she questioned it before eventually giving me the correct change. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a mistake. I understand times are hard, but charging more for products that clearly had corners cut doesn't sit right with me. It just comes across like there's no integrity. Clearly the quality and portions are going downhill. I wasn't even planning on writing this review. I was going to stay quiet, but the chocopie really ticked me off. I'm not going to pay for food that skims on ingredients and shortchanges customers by charging more for less, so this will be my last visit.

I suspect that the "buttercream" was made with milk and margarine and powdered sugar.....so much powdered sugar. It was sickeningly sweet, and it was dry too. And a true bettercream doesn't even use powdered sugar. So not only were the cupcakes terrible, they were not even what they purported to be. This is like calling a cut of meat a filet mignon and serving a hamburger. Von's, Ralphs and Albertson's make better cupcakes than this for a fraction of othe price.
