There is nothing Mexican about this restaurant. The food is Minn-Mex, at best, where the tang of Miracle Whip is favored for a little zest. And why gravy on a burrito? I was intrigued so I tried it and was immediately taken back to my childhood and the tater tot casserole my mom used to make on a shoestring budget. First time at Maria's. We are new to Omaha and my husband was told this is the best Mexican restaurant in town. He knows I love Mexican food and Tex-mex- any version of ingredients.... I was so excited to try this place but it was a huge let down. The place was packed so I just knew it was going to be amazing. We didn't have to wait that long, maybe 30 minutes which was fine. I went to Maria's for a work lunch. It was a beautiful day out so we sat on their patio. It was newer inside and I loved that the patio had those cool garage doors that could be opened in the summer time. Service was good. The appetizer (chips and salsa) came out pretty quickly. I'd recommend the flour tortilla chips if you haven't had them before. The drinks were topped off very often (almost too much!). Well 2 sodas and half a basket of chips later, our food came out. Maria's has the large puffy taco shells that they call 'soft shell' The food was good. The tacos don't skimp on the meat and fillings which I like. I got the carnitas and chicken tacos. The chicken came with an orange sauce that was tasty. I used the house salsa on the carnitas. The salsa actually had a good kick to it, to my surprise. The only think I didn't like about this place was the bathrooms. It smelled like sewage. Avoid the restroom at all costs. Other than that, it was good. read more

My family and I have come here for years, but over The last several months their service has gone severely downhill. You will see a picture of my "tamale". I ordered their delicious famous margarita without salt, got it with salt, said something to the waitress, got a new margarita without salt on the rim but it was in the drink. Had to take the drink to the bar to get it made correctly. Waited 2 hours for our food. We were told, "it was busy tonight." It is busy every night!!! We were pleasantly surprised by how good this place was. Came here around dinner time on a Sunday night only to find the parking lot PACKED. This was my first hint that we were about to get something good. We walked in and were seated at a booth relatively quickly despite the place being busy. My girlfriend got a mixed drink that ended up being awful - weak in both alcohol and flavor and was pretty much just a weak slushy from a 7/11 with a splash of tequila in it. I became concerned. They also don't offer complementary chips and salsa, which, as an entitled American man with moobs and a hanger over my belt, I was furious about. Furious. But then the food came out and it was actually pretty good so I quickly forgot about my plan to form an organized no-chip protest out in front of their restaurant. I got the beef taco and enchilada, and my girlfriend got their burrito plate. Oh man - that puffy taco. Where has that thing been all my life. Next time I come here, if they could just set up a puffy taco conveyor belt with them going directly into my mouth it would be great. The enchiladas and burritos were also fantastic, with my only complaint being that aside from the red sauce they drizzled over the top of my enchilada - they were nearly indistinguishable from the burritos. Quick side note - the rice and beans here were DELISH - the beans actually had an awesome flavor to them. Rich and well seasoned. Meanwhile the rice actually tasted like someone seasoned them and didn't just add food coloring to a pot of white rice. Dang good Mexican food, friendly quick service, some crappy mixed drinks, and the puffiest tacos I've ever seen. I calculate a 93.6% probability of returning to this location to shove more puffy tacos down my gullet. read more

I have been eating here on and off for years (whenever I am in town) because it is by far one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been too. The food is excellent (you have to try the fried tacos), the prices are good, and the staff are great. I've never had bad food or bad service and the packed parking lot and line out the door are always a good indicator. If you are anywhere near here, you need to stop in for a bite. read more

The nachos (chips w beef and cheese, jalapenos on the side) were good, and the margaritas were killer, but nothing else was worth gushing over. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to try the gravy-laden beef, bean and cheese burrito (which reminded me more of something I'd eat at the Bohemian Cafe than a Mexican restaurant). Luckily I traded half of that for a chicken enchilada and had a chicken taco to supplement. Oh, and people comparing these tacos to Cali Taco is blasphemy... sorry. Maria's has been around for more than 30 years, and it shows. The meals and menu are the time-tested staples and there's obviously no need for variation. Salsa in a restaurant syrup dispenser sits out on the table, Fernando's style. Even sour cream, which you have to specially order, comes in those tiny packets. And there's no need for embellishments like cilantro and guacamole either. All in all, it was definitely some gut-sticking gluttony, but not worth a special trip back unless it's for the margaritas. Maria's has been around for years and this is the 1st time here. Love the tacos, huge and full of meat and a great fried shell. Hubby loved the enchiladas. Everything was wonderful! One great thing about this restaurant is something I personally have never seen is I saw the hostess wiping every menu with a clorax wipe after each return to the desk! Absolutely awesome! Now for the Margaritas, we tried the Fresh fruit blueberry which was made with real fruit, absolutely great! Then we switched to the regular ones in a pitcher and wow, it was big and filled 6 glasses. It was very strong so you definitely got your monies worth! This is our new Mexican food place! read more

This is a Mexican American restaurant! Definitely not a true Mexican restaurant, they make fried taco shells that are great for tacos. Not tacos with carne asada or something like that but with ground beef meat, so that's why I say it's Mexican American. It's a pricy as well. read more

Ok well this is Maria's "Mexican" restaurant, my review is well, it's not Mexican first of all, this is what us Mexicans call Tex-mex, store bought tostada shells and chalupa shells for tacos, and hamburger in the burritos, and the worst thing to do is flour tortillas for enchiladas, this shows they don't know Mexican, all I have to say is I won't spend money here again unless I want American food. My personal review, door says people choice winner, well I don't think they included any Mexicans in that choice, good food but not Mexican! 3 out of 10 it still taste ok for American food. read more

Amazing food! We have been dining here for 20 years and my husband's family has since the late 70s. We love the puffy tacos, the beef burritos and beef enchiladas. The bean and cheese dip is so good. Has a gravy mixed in to make it special. Maria is always there when we come (we make the drive from Lincoln) and we have been told that Maria makes the salsa and the spice Ness depends on her mood of the day. The restaurant does get pretty busy and has lots of seating but be prepared to wait or go at an off hour. I didn't get pics tonight but trust me, it is so good. Btw, not sure if I'd call it Tex-Mex. I feel that Maria's has it s b own unique flavor. The decor, I love the pictures on the wall that tell the story of Maria and her family. Check it out, you won't be sorry. read more

Nothing special about this place. The same food and presentation as most other Mexican restaurants. We both had combo plates and between the two combos we had most of their menu offerings. If you are looking for a quiet place for a date night, this isn't the place. The acoustics make this dining area quite loud. I can't remember the last Mexican restaurant I ate at that did NOT offer complimentary chips and salsa while waiting for the food. They are an expensive appetizer here. Enjoyed Taco Tuesday at Maria's...a first but won't be my last. I went to dinner at Maria's and enjoyed their "Taco Tuesday" special of two beef tacos for $4.99. The two tacos are large enough that next time I might just split the order with someone. You can also order chicken tacos for a $1 up charge. I also tried their chips and queso, which were so yummy. Maria's does not offer complimentary chips and salsa but their table salsa is quite good, and had a kick to it. Let me try to keep this brief. My entire has been dining at Maria's for over a decade. Never in my life have I encountered such rude and BOLD treatment from their staff. We arrived at 4:20 on a Saturday evening, 10min prior to opening and waited in line. Upon getting to the front, the extremely rude 16 y/o hostess questioned me 3 times asking if all 6 in my family were in attendance (they were). She laughed and was snide as she continued to ask all the while my husband and children were standing/sitting right near me. I'm not sure why she didn't believe that I was being honest however she said 'ok, well I will seat you even though I know they're not all here in this building and we have a strict policy on that'. Seriously. I finally pointed everyone out to her so she would finally just seat us. As she walked us to the table and continued to laugh at me, I asked to speak to a manager and she said 'ok babe' as she continued to laugh at me. Mind you I'm nearing 40 and she is half my age. The manager came to our table shortly after and agreed this hostess acted immature however seemed more concerned about our table wobbling. We then waited 45 min for our food to arrive. I'm baffled at why she wouldn't believe me when I said we were all in attendance and treat me with such disrespect. Most are very aware of their strict seating policy. The only reason I gave a rating of two stars is because of the Margaritas, I have never felt like I was putting a waitress out asking question on food, I sat out on the patio and felt that she was rushed and did not want to answer our questions. Good service and good food. However, if you are looking for anything close to authentic Mexican food this is not your place. Loved the margaritas! Very refreshing. They were strong on tequila but not too sweet. We ordered the chips and queso, it was good. The tacos are great, but not authentic in any way. The burrito with gravy was good, but not Mexican food. The enchilada was okay, but nothing I would order again. I am not complaining due to knowing this was "Tex Mex" heading in. We will be back for margaritas and tacos for sure. read more

I've been coming to Maria's since I was an infant (not kidding). My favorite margaritas in Omaha, hands down. You have to try the watermelon! And I can't complain about any of the food... First visit here and we're not impressed. Walked in at 7 pm, waited twenty minutes to be seated, expected that. It was extremely busy and the noise level was horrendous the entire time. Once seated our waitress attended to us immediately. She was friendly and very courteous also moved very quickly. We ordered margaritas while looking over the menu then placed our food order when they arrived, the surf & turf and mac's special. Our food finally arrived forty minutes later. It looked good but that's about it. Everything tasted as though it came from a can. The margaritas were horrible. I will say the tacos have an interesting look though.
