The inside of the restaurant is a little homey and could use updating (and cleaning?), but we like to come here for a late night snack of tacos and top it off with Helados ice cream across the street. If you love late night snacks, this is a good spot to hit. There are about 5 meat types you can choose from (mostly beef and pork). You venture inside and order at the cash register (CASH ONLYYY) and then someone comes out and makes the tacos for you on the street and you can stand/sit there and eat it off a little Styrofoam tray. As of recently, $2.25 for taco, which is a pretty standard price these days up and down 24th st. for a non promotion price (aka taco tuesday). So far everyone we have worked with speaks English well. We have never tried the full menu inside for the sit down part of the restaurant. Fun little late night spot and never "dangerous" on any of our visits. read more

Apparently this visit was on an 'off' day. I was a little worried about this place... maybe only because it's proximity to Restaurant San Luis, which I didn't have too favorable of an experience at recently (and was the next stop on our tour). By this time we'd already been to three other taquerias (plus a bakery) so maybe we were all just that much harder to please? But I felt like the group consensus was a resounding no. Keeping with the theme of the day, we ordered tacos. I believe I had an Al Pastor and Chicken (again, keeping it consistent). We were greeted with baskets of chips and salsa pretty promptly... but no napkins or silverware. I also got kind of an icky feeling in the cleanliness department - a rarity for me. I stopped down off of 24th for a business meeting early. walked up and down the block looking for a spot. I chose this spot and I chose poorly. It was super sketchy and the quality was pretty bad. chips and salsa came out of a bag, I had the "special" asade burrito and chalupa. very poor quality gristly and not much flavor. Cheese was suspect. Something is fishy here for sure I would avoid this place if I were you. My body did not like this food one bit either read more

There is a small restaurant before you enter Don Gaby's--- the cooks are separate from Don Gaby's. I think they said that they are only open on Saturdays -- until 3am. Well, the little stand before you enter this restaurant only sells tacos... the man cooking them told me that they were the best and fastest tacos in omaha.... He told the truth on both accounts. The tacos were DELISH! FRESH! And they have a little bar area that you can add your own cilantro, lime, salsa (green and red) and onions! So I loaded mine big time and they were EXCELLENT! I can't explain how great they were. Seasoned to perfection! Now INSIDE of Gaby.... Ugh... they were ok. The guac.... was ok. I've made better at home... but they give you a lot for the price. But it wasn't bad-- it just wasn't the best. I had the gordita... made with homemade tortillas... Very good! I loaded mine with the bar stuff from that little bar stand in front of the restaurant. I think that both places are owned and operated by the same people... the stand just does Tacos so people can order their tacos and go (without having to enter the restaurant.... when walking down 24th street. On my quest to find the best Mexican restaurant in South Omaha can be a little tricky. It's not difficult to find one to try, and this one was next on my list. This place hits on all the senses. Bright colors, people enjoying themselves, and the sweet smell of Mexican food hit you first. Then you order. I got the large al pastor taco on a corn tortilla, with a side of rice. Chips and salsa are then served. The salsa was okay, not my style, but it was good. The chips weren't homemade, which isn't a big deal, they were a little on the saltier side. When my food arrived, I was taken back by how large the taco actually was. It was enough to put me into a meat coma. But I can't just let it go to waste. It was fantastic. Nuff said. While waiting for my food to settle, I noticed them blending up peppers and tomatoes. When I realized that it was the salsa they serve, I was impressed. I desire chunky salsa, this was more like hot sauce. It did compliment the taco very nicely though. One more thing that I liked was: the meal altogether was less than $6! Don Gaby's is a wonderful Mexican restaurant in South O. The food is great and the staff do their best to accommodate non spanish speakers. Although it is a sit-down restaurant, the atmosphere is more like that of a fast food restaurant. Sidenote... I first came here in 1996 when I first moved to Omaha. My roommate spoke Spanish and was anxious to find the "barrio" in Omaha. We headed down to South O and became regulars here. I speak NO spanish. it was always humourous when I tried to order and said "No frijoles" and they had no idea what I was saying. I used to come here alot, alone and with groups. One friend claimed they had the best menudo he had ever had. Fast forward to 2007: we stopped in this spring. Gabys had changed some, but it was still the same. Luckily for me, there were english speakers. When we were there, there was an elderly woman in the front window making tortillas---very fresh! I had a wonderful cactus sandwich. This place NEVER disappoints. We head over there for lunch from the Old Market. Never a wait, and we attempt to practice our Spanish...which lead my coworker to order "Acua" today, she giggled and corrected him "Aqua". As for the food - YUM! I always get the small tacos, delicious meat I i got a chicen/pastor and carne asada today) with cilantro and onion on corn tortillas, served with limes. And only $1.75/ea! Being from Texas, it is awesometo eat in South O, and have decent food, instead of the crap that passes as Mexican (La Mesa...). My co workers got the special today-enchilada, taco, gordita with rice/beans. They cleared their plates :) Highly recommended. read more

It's an average to below average Mexican restaurant. The chips were very close to Tostitos quality. The green and red salsas were a bit bland and very watery. Tried a Gordita de Asada, Taco de Chorizo and some rice and beans. Everything tasted fine so no big complaints. Overall just kind of disappointing, there are better options. read more

Took an hour to make my food. When we received our food the meat was burned and the lady taking our food was trash. The food was dry. Wouldn't recommend it there are better restaurants near by. I love this place. My favorite Mexican joint in Omaha. The barbacoa is delicious and so is the al pastor. They are known for their gorditas but I am crazy about their tortas. They have two types of amazing homemade salsa (red and green) but the ONLY complaint I have is that they use low quality store bought round corn chips to dip in the salsa. The owner is awesome and the service is a good as can be expected. read more

Stopped in here yesterday with my husband and daughter to try it out, walked in and stood there while they held a 5 minute conversation before even acknowledging us, the lady was SO rude! They didn't offer us a menu or anything so I quickly tried to decide what I wanted as she stood there with the most annoyed look on her face i'd ever seen, she kept asking if we were done ordering yet as if she was trying to just get it over with. Not a single smile or anything, I had never felt so unwelcome giving someone my business, our food got done and she talked for another 5 minutes before bringing it to us and didn't say a word as we checked out. Seriously the worst customer service i've has in my whole life. Also the food was okay but I felt they were super stingy with everything, my torta had 2 little pieces of lettuce on it and 1 tiny tomato in the middle! Total rip off for the price. Wish I could give 0 stars. I recommend El riconcito instead, food is great and they actually appreciate you as a customer. read more
