What's one way to squeeze out the last few hours of a staycation? Margaritas and apps of course! So with the Honey in tow, we landed here on Sunday evening August 16th. The way the small bar is set up, because of the wall separating it from the dining room...it gives it an intimate vibe I really like. The ambient lighting and pleasing decor sets the mood to enjoy your choice of cocktails. We asked the bartender if she could make the cucumber margarita on the menu spicy? She obliged. Those drinks weren't as spicy or refreshing as we had hoped. We stuck with the classic margaritas for next round. They were just right! I'm not sure if themed weekends are a regular occurrence here. But this night was the final night of their Mango Madness Weekend. We were served plain nachos with a mango salsa dip. The Honey devoured it. I prefer my salsa with a red sauce and a bit of a spicy kick. I decided to give the steam mussels in a sauce with mango pieces, a try. I did not know this was the combination of spicy and sweet that I needed in my life!! We ordered extra bread and sopped up every last bit of it!! We made a point to tell the bartender how much we enjoyed it! We were grateful and disappointed, when she told us we had just eaten the last of it. Dang! We would have certainly asked for another order!! We left there giddy and satisfied. I wasn't even mad that I had to go back to work the next day! Was taken here for my birthday dinner and was disappointed. The server only seemed half interested in doing his job. He forgot our guacamole, which should've remained forgotten, since it was underseasoned and unremarkable. I was a bit shocked when we got the bill. The MP was $15, for the small, bland portion. Cubano quesadilla appetizer was good and substantial. Sangria was $35 and suffered from a serious lack of alcohol. My chipotle shrimp entrée didn't look like anything special, but tasted much better than it looked. My companions softshell crab taco special was good. The woman who came to our table who (was not the server) did not understand. the question asked to her about the bill, and as a result, gave an incorrect answer. As always the atmosphere at Maria's is always welcoming. The restaurant has done a fantastic outside renovation with the patio seating area providing a lush garden ambiance. We were welcomed and immediately seated, choosing inside seating and started off with a pitcher of their fruited Sangrias and complimentary salsa and chips. The food never disappoints. Tried the Papas con Queso, potato skins with sausage, cheese and guacamole, which were delicious and definitely not the usual skins one gets at other restaurants. The Churrasco Argentino was outstanding. The shell steak perfectly cooked medium rare at medium topped with chimichurri served over sliced tomatoes with a side of rice and string beans. The Carne Asada skirt steak was also perfectly cooked topped with roasted corn salsa, cheese and queso fresco served with tostones, guacamole, rice and beans. The combos were varied and very good although some of our party stated the taco shells and tortillas were a little soggy but still flavorful. We ate here for Mother's Day and had a wonderful time! We did have to wait a bit for our seat despite having a reservation, but the staff were super kind and friendly that we didn't mind waiting in the gorgeous garden lounge outside. The staff here make this place as amazing as it is. Many of them have worked here for many years, a few remember my family coming since I was a toddler! The food was fantastic, especially my delicious Carne Asada. Cooked perfectly and super flavorful. I also loved my Bahama Mama drink, which was special for Mother's Day. Authentic Mexican! Friday night, no reservation. We were told 45 minutes for a table or we could find a spot at the bar. MJ and I walked over to the bar and there weren't 2 seats open that were next to each other. A couple noticed us and asked us if we wanted them to scoot over. How nice and thoughtful! We started with a spicy Chihuahua, and skinny Margarita. Perfectly balanced! They both went well with complimentary chips and salsa. We decided to eat light tonight, House Salad, Calamari and Quesadilla. All cooked perfectly! Very comfortable seating at the bar. As always, the atmosphere at Maria's is so welcoming, and this visit was 10/10. We sat outside on the outdoor patio. For it being a July evening, it was cool and the fans made it more comforting. Ivan was our waiter, he was attentive and gave great recommendations. We ordered a small pitcher of their seasonal watermelon sangria to start. One of our favorite things that Maria's offers is their seasonal sangria! For an appetizer, we ordered the special: Nachos Fiesta de Mar. These were unbelievable. Creamy lobster, shrimp, and lump crab piled on crispy nachos, topped with queso fresco, mango pico, avocado, jalapenos, and drizzled with chipotle cream. Honestly, could have licked the plate clean. For my entree, I had the Churrasco Argentino. The shell steak was cooked perfectly at medium and it was topped with the perfect amount of chimichurri, with extra on the side if needed! The side of rice and string beans rounded it out really well. My dad had the bronzino special, which came with rice and beans as well. It was fresh and cooked exactly how he wanted it. He couldn't stop raving about it. We finished with their classic fried ice cream. I was so full and only had a bite, but it was incredible. I don't know. I'm torn with this review. I came here with some friends on a Friday evening. They were quite crowded but we had a reservation and didn't have to wait too long to be seated. To start I had a pear margarita. It was very good. When I ordered it again, it tasted a little different. Other drinks at my table were also ordered, but I don't recall what they were. For an appetizer my boyfriend and I had Maduro Relleno con Camarones. This was Sweet Plantain stuffed with Shrimp in Coconut Creole Sauce topped with Tropical Cheese. This was delicious! However, this was the only food item that was delicious for the evening. I ordered the Salmon con Salsa de Mango. It had very basic flavor. The menu stated the salmon was chipotle glazed...but I did not get any chipotle flavors at all. When I ordered my Salmon our waiter asked me if I was sure I didn't want the cod special. No I don't want it. If I wanted the cod special, I would've ordered it. This dish also cost more than the salmon dish, so I believe he was trying upsell me. My boyfriend had Chuletas Cubanos. His pork was completely flavorless. There wasn't any type of seasoning at all. The chorizo was also over cooked. Other food that was ordered was the short rib special, a steak dish, some type of pulled pork and something else that I don't recall. For dessert I had regular fried ice cream and my boyfriend had the candy cane fried ice cream special. Mine was okay and he didn't like is. He described it as eating a bowl of toothpaste. Man do I need to get back on the review wagon. I think I wrote up only one in all of June and that was the beginning of the month! I've been to plenty of places since then and a few before, like Maria's in Nesconset (picture stamp date is late April...yikes!). But some good things deserve a little time to be reviewed like this Mexican food spot that I visited back in Spring with my wife. Now we had passed Maria's a few times and saw the small-looking setup from the road, though Maria's has a decent amount of space inside as well as a nice little exterior area. That day I remember it was quite warm for April, but the sun was setting and the chills were underway so we ate inside right in a small corner where somehow the wall angled into nothing (which honestly my wife loved). The rest of the ambiance was festive and fun creating a casual yet still a little classy eating experience. Speaking of eating, Maria's menu was of respectable size with plenty of Mexican and Latin favorites. But with favorites such as these, there are always good drinks to be had and so my wife and I ordered a frozen strawberry margarita and a pineapple mojito. Yum! Chips and salsa donned the table from our mostly attentive waiter and then it was finally ordering time. Starting with an app (which we probably didn't need) I went for the tamales as my wife was not sure she had ever had them (so we needed to change that!). Stuffed with beef and topped with avocado, red chili sauce, and queso fresco, these tamales were quite tasty (even if I felt like there probably should've been one or two more to match the price). For dinner, there were a lot of great-sounding authentic meals, but my wife and I both did the combo thing and got plates that came with a few different items. My plate was combo #9 (not mambo #5, sorry Lou Bega) which consisted of a beef taco, chicken enchilada, and chili relleno. The lady had combo #1 (chicken taco, beef burrito, cheese enchilada) and for both of us we enjoyed what we ate. I'll say the taco got a little soggy towards the end and the rice and beans were pretty basic, but as a whole the flavors hit (love me some chili relleno). Overall, Maria's was a quality spot for some good ol' Mexican/Latin cuisine. Often I'm just looking for something quick and easy like tacos (so Right Coast's taco truck is my go-to for this type of grub), but if I'm looking for more of a full and festive meal, then I know Maria's will be my option. And with that, we move one step closer to writing a review for some where a little more recently-visited. read more

I hadn't been to Maria's in many years but recently met friends for lunch there. The complimentary chips were very good, but I did not care for the salsa. We ordered off the lunch menu, so the prices were quite reasonable. I had the arroz con pollo. The dish had plenty of rice but could have used more chicken. It also came with plantains (gave those away) and black beans. Since the restaurant was fairly empty, we weren't rushed out the door after we finished eating. I would venture back there when the weather warms because Maria's has a cute outdoor patio. Next time I'll remember to skip the arroz con pollo and order something else. read more

Today is Father's day so we understand how busy it is. We went here for dinner with reservations. We were seated promptly. We odered a small pitcher of watermelon sangria. It was fully hand made to order. We all liked it. For an appetizer we ordered meat empanads. 2 to the order with fresh made chimmichurri sauce. Very good. The chimmichurri gave it a nice kick. On to the main course. Since there were only 3 of us and we all don't eat that much we decided to share an order of Paella Valenciana so we placed the order. We were waiting and waiting, the waiter kept saying it's coming. Maria came over and told us that it takes 40 minutes to make. We've been waiting for over 50. This is not the first we ever ate paella. When they brought the food the fish was well cooked but the rice was way undercooked, even a bit crunchy. We passed on dessert and paid the bill. There was no courtesy extended at all. Ultimately, except for the rice, which was a big part of the meal, the food was just ok and service was terrible. read more

We started with the plantain special that had shrimp, cheese and coconut which was to die for! The seafood enchilada comes with 2 fishes, check to make sure you like them. We asked for only shrimp. The mole sauce was incredible with the perfect amount of heat. The tacos el carbon were sheer perfection. This is one of my favorite restaurants be side it us always consistently so delicious! The parking lot was so small I almost expected the restaurant door to be waist-high like the Little Door from Alice in Wonderland. Fortunately, the door was normal-sized but when we walked in it was unclear exactly what we were supposed to do except stand around awkwardly and wait for someone to acknowledge us. It honestly didn't look like anyone expected someone to actually walk into this restaurant and the whole "vibe" felt awkward and off the whole time we were there. One of the reasons I don't typically go to new restaurants is the feeling that there's some sort of convention one must follow that everyone somehow knows except myself. In any case, we were eventually sat in normal-sized chairs in front of a normal-sized table and greeted by a normal-sized waiter. As you can tell, that parking lot size really still bothers me even to this day. It kind of pisses me off if I'm being completely honest. I'm going to punch a normal-sized wall to release the tension. The Quesadillas were recommended to us and we do admit that they were, by far, the best quesadillas we've eaten anywhere. It makes the QDOBA quesadillas taste like dog food, not that I've ever tried dog food (you never know though, we could be missing out). However, the quesadillas were the highlight of the experience. Everything else was extraordinarily average. The portions were as small as the parking lot but not as big as the cheque; it was a discrepancy I wasn't expecting. Okay, I'm lying, I totally expected it. Too much white everywhere, it's a clear sign. There isn't an actual selection of drinks outside of alcohol so I decided to try a Tequila Old Fashion because I remember that's what some Asian guy from a movie I watched always drank but till this day I don't understand the appeal of alcohol no matter what type it is. Maybe it's a social status thing, "lets see how much cough syrup you can handle before your liver gives out!" I prefer the finer vices, like a bit of rumpy-pumpy in the hayloft. Anyway, I would never come back here, even for takeout. I was introduced to Maria's by my step-daughter, she lives down the block. We've been there numerous times and each time it's a great experience. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The menu has so many great choices. We always start with the guacamole and chips. The guacamole is always made perfectly and the chips are homemade. The chorizo and mushroom appetizer is our new go to favorite. The skirt steak is cooked just how I like it, medium with a nice char served with enchilada, salsa, rice and beans. I also like the shrimp in garlic sauce , the glazed salmon with mango and the paella. Everything is always flavorful. They have great drinks too. We order a pitcher of margaritas, either classic, pineapple, spicy jalapeno. If you are celebrating a birthday they give you a sombrero and make it very festive. Bon G and I have been wanting to visit Maria's and last night we trekked to Nesconset and found this Gem, in the flesh! If you werent looking for this place without GPS you probably wouldnt find it. Its a hidden world that transports you to a different place, one thats tranquil, beautiful and Spanish! They have a wonderful outdoor area but we chose to dine indoors as it was getting dark. We were seated immediately in the dining room and visited by our wonderful server Ivan. We had many questions and he was cordial and answered them all. We started with the Maria's Special Sangria... a large size pitcher filled with wine, liquors and all kinds of ripe delish fruits... was wonderful and packed a punch! Ivan told us they had a Mussels special which we ordered...was the BEST Mussels we have had in a very long time...Large meaty mussels in a fantastic garlic based sauce that we slurped up till it was all gone. Also got fantastic Quesadilla Cubano; awesome fresh Lechon packed segments filled with juicy shredded pork...So Good! We were full by now but had to try a couple of mains...Bon had the Steak Fajita and I had the Skirt Steak...both delish and prepared to order. Took home enough leftovers for another meal. We were too full for dessert but we lefft happy and rareing to bring friends to dine here with us and enjoy the food, atomosphere and great service proferred by Ivan and the rest of the staff....We will return soon!!! read more

The atmosphere of the restaurant is decidedly Latin, with colorful murals and a floral garden entrance. It is mid October and it is still possible to dine al fresco thanks to the heaters scattered about the outside eating area. Our group of seven was seated at a large round table making dinner conversation enjoyable. The piped in music acted as a lovely sottofondo to the evening and did not overwhelm the speakers at the table. We were promptly seated at the hour of our reservation. Our waiter took our drink orders promptly. Upon returning with the drinks, he explained the specials of the day. I went with his recommendation. The table ordered coconut encrusted shrimp and a guacamole dip as appetizers. Since my entree included shrimp, I passed on the shrimp. The guacamole dip was very good. As an entree, I ordered the fish special that included: Cod, calamari, scallops, and shrimp lightly awash in a fish sauce. The sauce added an extra dimension to the fish. The cod was flavorful and juicy, the scallops were savory, and the shrimp delicious. The calamari were scattered about and added texture to each bite. In short: this entree was delicious! The entree hit the spot and I passed on my own dessert, however, I did taste my wife's pumpkin spice fried gelato. It was delicious as well. The Takeaways: 1. Good portion to cost balance. 2. Some of the best authentic Mexican food you will find in Suffolk county. The wait staff was extremely friendly especially to my 16 month old. I tried the Cazuela de Mariscos which was a light and flavorful seafood medley rice dish with saffron. The portion was generous and I had plenty leftover which reheated nicely for lunch the following day. I also tried the sopapilla from the specials dessert menu and the dish was such a nice treat. Lots of flavors and textures between the crispy tortilla, syrupy fruits, and ice cream. I would definitely come back and try other items. My friends also both enjoyed their dishes. Tasty food, excellent, friendly service in a nice, casual setting. My wife and I were in the neighborhood so we visited an old favorite for dinner. As usual, Maria's did not disappoint. We were greated and quickly seated, the staff quickly and without hesitation made adjustments to the table to accommodate my mobility scooter. My wife started with a margarita that according to her is the best on Long Island. I had a beer. For an appetizer we shared a plantain, Cheese and shrimp thing that was excellent. Our entrees were tacos and seafood enchiladas. My wife's tacos were very good but the enchiladas were filled mostly with squid that was too chewy for me. I asked the waiter to replace it with enchiladas filled with shrimp which he graciously did. They were delicious. Cheesecake for dessert rounded out this fine experience. I would have given 5 stars if not for the squid fiasco. It has no place in an enchilada. Deep fried is ok but in a fine food dish, it has no place.
