The steak tacos with chimichurri sauce were nicely seasoned, perfectly cooked and fantastic. One kid noted that his chicken tacos had "too much chicken," which I thought was a great feature. It didn't come with pico de gallo, though, just diced tomatoes. The other kid ordered a quesadilla, which was straightforward and delicious. The server was lovely, the Negra Modelo on tap was cold and delicious, and the decor was stylish and comfortable. Good stuff! read more

This is a solid 3.5 but I'm rounding it up bc I know there's potential. I'm just gonna get right into it. The tacos were really good with many different kinds. I had the shrimp and cauliflower tacos and the sauces and ingredients were fresh. The drinks were eh. My wife's margarita with the lack thereof tajin was not what she expected. It was very "artificial" kinda like a Applebees dollar marg. Finally, the dude behind the bar which may have been the owner was super cool but the 3 chics also behind the bar were almost useless. Just standing around waiting to take your empty plate. Put them to make drinks! Once those 2 factors are worked on this place would be a smash hit. Walked in. There is no sign indicating if there's a host or if it's seat yourself. No one around. Okay, so we find a high-top outside and stand by it. There seems to be one server working both inside and outside. Eventually we make eye contact and ensure we are okay standing where we are, she says no problem. The plan was to get drinks and apps. Order their house old fashioned and a spicy margarita. It was probably the worst old fashioned I've ever had, and I immediately mourned what we lost when South Shore Dive closed. Two of these things, if not three, have to be true: (1) The well bourbon is really crappy (which is weird, because there are plenty of good cheap bourbons, (2) the ratio was off, (3) there was no attempt to mix and dilute the ingredients. But it was objectively bad. My wife's "spicy" margarita might have been worse. It was not a good margarita and had zero spice. (I am not being one of those people that is used to spicy things and so thinks it wasn't spicy *enough.* There was literally no spice.) Also, no salt on the rim. Just a bad margarita in a standard little glass. Worse, they charge extra to make it spicy. Ugh. I was not about to complain about $2 though. Perhaps I should have flagged down the server and let her know, but I didn't. That's on me. The server never asked how our drinks were, so I did not have a chance to inquire anyhow. But the drinks were so bad that we assumed the food would not be good either, and we left. That is my direct experience. The rest are my opinions from observing the goings-on and I am making inferences, although I think they are reasonable: The outside setup is weird. Poor use of space. There is very little outside that fits the theme of the restaurant. The tables are picnic tables. It's just kinda random--which is cool if you are a sweet dive bar, but less cool when you are aiming to be a cantina. The sole server was kind but perhaps needed a second server or better direction from management. One hiccup is that she did not seem--and no one seemed--to understand how one reserved a table. I saw some people told there was a wait, and then others came in after and got a table. Just seemed very amateurish. No sense of polish--or even just a set procedure. Making things up on the fly. I know the restaurant is new, but these are just mistakes that people who work in the industry can and should avoid from tip-off. So, yeah, they had a chance to win over two people that live right nearby, but they didn't. We won't be back. We left and went to Cafe Joelle. I had to laugh when I got an old fashioned there because it was so much better: one big ice cube encased in the standard old fashioned flavors. Such a simple drink. If you cannot make a decent old fashioned, you should not be bartending until you can. If you cannot make a decent margarita, you should not be a bartender in a self-described cantina. And if you cannot just do the basics right: People enter and need to be directed somewhere by a person or a sign; there should be a known process for how a table is secured; and there should be enough servers. As-is, this place won't last unless the food is *insanely* good. But I don't think it's possible for a place to have so many glaring flaws yet get the food part--maybe the hardest part--right. Been here a ton of times so far! Everything has been phenomenal. I've had the pleasure of meeting some of the owners. So far I have met Nikki and Phil and both are so welcoming. Phil is also their head chef and let me tell you, the Birria tacos are a must! Another personal favorite is the Southwestern bowl with chicken and the Cantina Roja enchilada. The side patio area is adorable and the inside. it's so fun and lively. Definitely go check it out it was incredible and I was one happy Gringa!!! read more

My wife and I stopped in for Gringos grand opening last night. It was a nice crowd, with a good cross section of clientele. Very casual. My wife ordered a Malibu bay breeze which was quite tasty. I had a domestic bottled beer. They did have quite a selection of Mexican and domestic beers on tap. My wife ordered a chicken quesadilla which she said was delicious. I ordered the Tres Amigos enchiladas. Very tasty. The service was outstanding. There is also patio seating for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere. All in all a really nice experience that I would highly recommend for a fun experience. read more

What a nice new paint job outside! Too bad the inside is still dark with odd lighting on this large selection of tequila bottles which may just be there for looks since most of it is not featured in any of their drinks. There is no separate list of their tequila selection that someone like me might want to enjoy. I also surmised most of the bartending staff would likely not be able to make a good recommendation for a nice sipping tequila or a flight for that matter. Our dinner plans were quickly changed after we walked in and had the house margarita which immediately gave me indigestion. Clearly batched with an overly acidic taste which resembled bad lemonade. Very small, lots of ice for which I was thankful-- over quickly. I tried a second drink and this was a tad bit better but not enough to entice me back. We ordered the flautas to eat with our drinks and they were AWFUL. They appeared to be burnt and the insides were filled with an over processed mix which supposedly included chicken (and chalk maybe)? We got our check and ran! The thing is-- as ubiquitous as Mexican food can be, it can be delicious and unique when prepared by knowledgeable people who have a love for food and cooking. Went there last night. Everyone was welcoming the minute we came through the door. Our server was very attentive. The food was solid. We got the queso and chips. Good flavor. I got the 3 enchiladas, my wife got the holy moly enchilada and my daughter got a steak quesadilla. Portion sizes were nice. My wife and I made some minor modifications to our dishes which our server said normally they don't do but since it was not busy when we were there it was no problem. The dishes could have used more enchilada sauce on both but overall both were tasty. Hopefully we just went on a slow night as I can see potential but if that is typical crowd it won't last long. read more

5 STARS! Bartenders were friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar and the bar stools were comfortable. We ordered the shrimp and steak tacos on the corn tortilla and we LOVED IT! ( food was reasonably priced). The corn tortilla was fresh and it gave the taco a real authentic feel. We also wanted spicy margaritas so the bartenders muddled fresh jalapeños and showed us which tequila would pair well. They also had jalapeños simple syrup which we never had before. Sayville needed a fun and refreshing new spot! we are so excited about it! read more
