A Gloucester staple, family owned and always putting out great food. They are running a small staff, but are always accommodating.

At one time Maria's restaurant was a quaint hole in the wall. It had character, great food and a wait staff that were always friendly and helpful. That was prior to covid. Now, they no longer employ waitresses, and the pizza is now small. Maria's pizza, which was already on the small size, went from 13" to 12" and of course went up in price. The pizza now looks like the individual DiGiorno's frozen pizza you buy at the supermarket. If you enjoyed Maria's in the past, sorry to say you certainly won't now. read more

There are so many restaurants in Gloucester DO NOT bother waisting your money on this garbage . I was getting 3 large pizzas for my 2 kids and their 2 friends that had stayed over & my husband . I called placed my order they said 35 minutes . I get there terribly late almost an hour & my Oder is still not ready ?! Total came to $61.03. Waited about 10 more minutes and left with my pizzas . I almost shit when I got home and they were no bigger than a personal pizza. Ok maybe they messed up or didn't hear me say large . I call and speak to management coming to find out they only have one size . That would have been amazing to know PRIOR to me ordering . So I ask if I can bring them back and get a refund . At this point husband was starving and McDonald's would have done . So I call back again and request very politely a refund if I come and bring the pizzas back . The MANAGER HANGS UP ON ME . for 2 hours did not answer the telephone . Closing time I show up in the parking lot to see the "management" slugging beer at the takeout counter . NEVER AGAIN . Excellent, thoughtful menu with dishes we can't find anywhere else nearby. Bountiful desserts. We have recommended this restaurant to five friends. After dining here they gave it glowing reviews. Here's the classic case of a restaurant not knowing what it wants to be. It's known for pizza! Then why would you create a menu that includes surf and turf, pot roast, chicken pico de gallo etcetera and pizza. I've been a chef for a long time and I understand the limitations of what a restaurant is capable of, and what needs to come in frozen so the staff can pull a dish off. Everything I've had at Maria's has been mediocre at best. The food leaves you asking, why did we bother. They really need to focus. 7 pizza restaurants in a small town, you need to perfect a craft, not add on more mediocre dishes because the pizza doesn't sell. read more

Having grown up in Gloucester, I've had loads of Maria's pizza over the years but hadn't realized they're also a restaurant with a pretty big menu now. We met up with my father and his girlfriend for dinner here and I was impressed at the decor and huge menu. The place is busy as they do lots of pizza pick-ups so we actually weren't able to park at the restaurant and parked across the street at the Shaw's. In fact, the parking lot looked like a mess with cars double parked and just too small to house all the people that wanted to park there. No wait to sit for dinner and we got a booth. They have beer and a few wines but no mixed drinks. Our waitress was nice, very friendly. I went with a white wine (it was just okay) and the rest of the table got a mix of wine and beer. The menu has lots of pasta items (to be expected) and then various fish items but specials of the day. I think I saw burgers listed too. I think you'll find something for every eater in your group. I went with the bowl of haddock chowder and a large garden salad. The chowder was good but extremely hot (microwaved feel to it with the heat that just didn't let up). I liked the amount of bacon in the broth. The salad was okay - mostly lettuce with a cucumber, tomato and a few olives thrown in. A bit over priced. We also got the broiled scallops (the winner as everyone tried one and liked it); I loved the squash that came with it and took it as my own. Lasagna (thumbs up) and a haddock sandwich (just okay) rounded out our meals. Everything started with rolls that didn't taste fresh but were okay. I probably wouldn't stop in for dinner again. Wasn't super fast and I thought the food was overpriced, plus you had to put up with noise from the counter area. It was packed by the time we finished and we actually had people hovering right next to us waiting for the table which was a bit awkward. I do recommend their pizza if you're looking for the nice sweet sauce kind. read more

Where do I begin? The pizza was horrible. I didn't know that you could mess up pizza as bad as they did. On top of that, I've never received such horrendous customer service in my life. Gloucester has a lot of great Italian & fish restaurants ... by this I mean restaurants that combine seafood and Italian dishes, and this is our favorite. Less crowded than the Causeway, but just as fresh and tasty. We try to get here once a week when we're here in the summer. Our favorite is the haddock & scallops au gratin, which we usually split; but you can't go wrong with anything - if it sounds good it is! If you can find it (across from the railroad station) give it a try - but remember it's closed on Monday. read more

I have had take out from here a few times but got to eat in for the firs time yesterday. The restaurant is very small and inviting. The staff is funny, and knowledgeable of the menu. Tuesday was buy one pizza get one half off which made it easy to get two pizzas and salads with out breaking the bank. The pizzas are all made fresh there with fresh ingredients and you can see the kitchen and the oven from anywhere in the restaurant. They were very easy going about my very curious and very friendly toddler who was saying "hello" to the staff every time one of them walked by. The only downside is the very small parking area but the pizza is fresh and yummy and the staff is great so just be prepared to park elsewhere as they do a lot of take out business. read more

The best pizza I've ever had, and yes, that includes an authentic New York slice. Maria's is the best quality pizza around, and the salads/other entrees are generally quite good as well. The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's generally better to do take-out if possible, as the restaurant can get crowded and hot on summer nights! read more

One of those well known little 'hole in the wall' kind of places that many of us locals had always loved!! Twice we called to order and found they were offering ONLY pizza, as it was hot? Hum? I get that Summer is hot, but I've never found another place limit the menu on a hot night? Many of the times families turn to take out, is to avoid cooking, so I get that it's hot in the kitchen...maybe they need a better AC unit, but I would HOPE they will make the full menu available every day!! Luckily, we have not run into this often, but also don't order much, as the seafood quality has gone downhill. Nothing is worse than getting home to find out your seafood is not fresh and has that 'fishy' taste...anyone that loves fresh fish, knows that it's awesome fresh and living here on the coast we love expect the best. And when it's fresh, it's absolutely awesome and use to one of the best places in town seafood dinners! We loved the Haddock, shrimp and sole and really miss them now! It used to be consistently awesome...super fresh and delicious. But, sadly, you have to chance it every time and it's a bummer to get a bad meal, especially with higher prices! We once loved every bit and even had leftovers from every meal...not now! Luckily, the last time we ordered it was very good and that's WHY I upped this to three stars!, We've also now experienced missing items on our orders and even burnt pizza...Oh MY--what has happened tp Maria's! I had a delicious meal last night. Everything at Maria's is great. That said, this morning I woke up with an irritated throat and eyes. Hey guys, somethings wrong with your kitchen exhaust vent, or it wasn't turned on. It was odd because I couldn't see smoke in the dining room, but I could certainly smell it. It was like a very hot oven that's not vented. At one point during my dinner, I mentioned this to the waitress. She just smiled and walked away. Seriously, breathing in smoke is not good. I will give them another try. Hopefully they'll read this and either speak to the cooks or fix the problem. read more

Came here tonight because I love the steak tip cesar but no one would wait on us after we were seated. Watched as 3 other tables were cleared, others seated and waited on immediately. Very rude. I know they were busy but nobody even acknowledged us. As a long time resident of Gloucester, we won't be back. read more

Ordered the lasagna with a meatball and the chicken marsala. Both were outstanding. Fresh side salad. All yummy and the exact comfort food I was looking for. Good value. Generous portions. Friendly good service. Ordered the Bananas Foster for desert and wasn't disappointed. I think I left 5 lbs heaver than I walked in - but no regrets! The place is a bit dated outside/inside, but that doesn't bother me, I go to restaurants for good great food and that's what I got. Limited parking, but I parked at the Shaw's across the street. I absolutely love their Chicken Marsala! The sauce is sooo good and the portion is very generous. I get take out a lot there and I love that they wait until you check in to finish your meal so it is nice and hot for you to bring home. Another one of my favorite things is their meat sauce. You can buy it by the quart which I do often. Since I lived alone it was great to use for multiple meals. The staff has always been extremely nice to me every time I come in and they remember me. As someone who's been in the restaurant business most of my life I really appreciate staff members who remember their customers. Great value! Great job Chris, Corey and staff! read more

Don't be fooled by the name...this is so much more than a pizza joint. It is a little hole in the wall neighborhood restaurant that if i were the Phantom Gourmet, I would call a hidden jewel. I had a salad with balsamic vinagrette that tasted homemade. The night we were there, the soup was a fisherman's stew with haddock. It took a while to come to the table and we were told it was made to order, as everything we ordered obviously was. The eggplant parmesean was plenty for two people. The waitress was great, the food was excellent and the prices were unbelieveably cheap! The decor is 1970's pizza joint, but that doesn't mean there is no ambiance...the happy locals and regulars make it seem like a really fun place. I will go back again and again. read more

Maria's is the worst when it comes to customer service and the use of quality ingredients. Most products come in a can or were previously frozen. Great Pizza. I prefer to do take out here because it can be a real kid fest with screaming babies everywhere. I recently witnessed a baby having a complete melt down. There wasn't one person in the entire restaurant who's meal was not being ruined by this kid. The parent nor the management chose to do anything. this is my favorite gloucester pizza. i don't know what special ingredient they put in their crust to make it so much different, but it's in there and it's fantastical. a mushroom and peppers pizza from maria's is like nothing else. i've only been in the restaurant a couple times, as this has been a big place to get take-out in my family. i did go in a couple months ago, though, and the service was fantastic. you can tell everyone working there either is or is treated like family. we were never without anything. the menu of stuff other than pizza had a lot to offer but we got pizza, so i don't have a ton to say about their dishes. we had such a hard time deciding, which is why we just took the easy pizza route. perhaps i'm a bit regretful. read more
