We stopped by Marie's Donuts this morning after hearing glowing reviews. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop itself looked clean and inviting, and the donuts on display looked fresh.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The owner was incredibly kind--she shared a bit about their 60-year family legacy, which I genuinely appreciated. It's always nice to support local businesses with real roots in the community. That said, I'll admit I'm a bit of a donut snob. I usually judge a donut shop by their glazed and maple bars--if those are excellent, the rest usually follow suit. Unfortunately, both were a letdown here. They were dense and flat, lacking that light, airy, and slightly chewy quality I look for. The maple glaze was a little dull and didn't have much flavor to elevate the experience. We also tried the white-frosted cake donut with sprinkles, which was better, but still not quite there. It was missing that subtle crispness on the outer edge that really makes a cake donut sing. Also, only half of it had sprinkles, which left me wondering if they were going for an artsy vibe or just forgot to finish it. I'm glad this place is still going strong after so many decades, and I truly wish them well. But for me, the flavor and texture just didn't land. Rather than a case of donuts in the front, you select the donuts that you see behind the cashier. If you have any questions about them, I found the staff to be very helpful and informative. I was especially curious about some of their old fashioned donut varieties. I'd never seen a yellow covered old fashioned before. It turns out that the yellow old fashioned is lemon flavored! In fact, they also have vanilla as well as the traditional chocolate, maple, and glazed. An outstanding donut from Marie's has to be their non-dairy cream filled donuts. There is an enormous amount of cream in them. These donuts look as good as they taste and are a cream lover's dream. My only slight qualm about my visit to Marie's Donuts was that they didn't seem to have any French crullers when I was there. The building tells you that you've stepped into an establishment from the past brought here for us to continue to enjoy. Some of the staff are old timers; with lots of stories to share, which I find enjoyable. The donuts are wonderful as well. This shop offers lots of donuts that are no longer at the forefront of other donut establishments like custard filled glazed, or a boston cream with chocolate glaze. First timer at Marie's Donuts!! [COVID-19 Edition] Went to Marie's Donuts for the first time and purchased half a dozen sweet treats to take home. Of course, the store was modified to adapt to the temporary "new norm" during the COVID-19 crisis with employees wearing masks and gloves as they assisted customers. The customers, however, while they practiced social distancing, were not wearing masks themselves (while I chose to). The donuts were placed in racks and were replaced each time the trays get low, freshly made! My box of goodies included (2) raised glazed, (2) strawberry sprinkles (my teen's favorite), a cinnamon roll (my favorite), and an apple fritter. The two employees were fast and efficient and the lady who assisted me was nice and friendly and wasn't rushing me as I had a bit of a challenging time deciding what to get (all the donuts looked so good). I have mixed feelings about this place. First time visiting this donut shop. I am always on the hunt for good local donuts, and this place is close to work so I decided to give it a try. I tried a basic raised glazed donut which is my go-to when trying a new donut place. I give this donut a 4/5- not the best I've ever had, but decently fresh and fluffy. I'm docking a star because of the weird service. In addition to the glazed donut, I also ordered 4 dozen donut holes. The lady scooped a bunch into a box, and said, "that's 4 dozen, do you want more?" I said, "that looks like so little, are you sure that's 4 dozen?" She roughly counted then said yeah of course. So I paid, went back to my car and counted out 37 donut holes. Went back inside and asked for the full 4 dozen. She gave an annoyed sigh and started scooping more donut holes into the box. I guess they did make up for their mistake, but it was odd that I had to ask for it when it's something that is so easily counted. I don't think I will be back. read more
