This is the second time I've been here! The first time I thought, "Hey a pink Mexican restaurant - let's try it!". For some reason, I've had positive experiences in pink restaurants. Anyway, had lunch here today. The refried beans are yummy! Home made, and the rice is tender - not dried out like I've experienced at other restaurants. They are known for their enchiladas, so I had one with shredded beef. Basic, but delicious. Greg ordered the chile verde burrito. Made with pork, the flavoring comes across as authentic. Every employee there was female! You can tell which customers are regulars too. Some of the male ones like to chat with one employee in particular - we noticed her the fist time we ate here about two years ago! Next time we do a road trip down 99, we'll drop in again! read more

The ambiance and service were nice unfortunately the food fell short of great but rated good. I would try it again if given the opportunity. We tried the menudo and a plate of chilaquiles with breakfast potatoes. The potatoes were a little undercooked and needed a little salt. The green chilaquiles were tasty if you like the flavor of tomatillo. The menudo needed a little salt and more flavor. Maybe it was just an off day. read more

This is one of those gems that I love to find. On the outside you would probably just walk by as it's in a very old building. But the inside looks super clean which is very comforting. This restaurant should be called Micocina because it feels just like my kitchen. I gave them the ultimate challenge, I ordered the chili Verde, and almost always I get let down on this dish. For some reason people think salt should be the number one ingredient, but not this restaurant. These guys know how to make a chili Verde that isn't all salty. It was very tasty and the rice and beans were good, and the homemade tortilla was noticeably above average. The staff was super nice, the home made table salsa was excellent. First time visit this afternoon for lunch and it was a good one. Great service and nice decor. Excellent enchiladas, rice, & beans. Decent price and our waitress had fast service even though it was starting to fill up. My beer was in an ice cold bottle served with an ice cold mug and it went well with my meal. if you love Mexican Cantina food, it is worth getting off Highway 99 to eat at. Or if you're local and haven't tried them yet. The place is incredibly clean, the food is insanely hot, not spicy, which is a huge plus and earns four stars on that alone. We will definitely come back here. read more

A coworker and I went here for lunch today. When we walked in, no one assisted us. We were not sure if we were supposed to wait to be seated or just take a seat anywhere. The wait for the food was not that bad. I ordered the Chile Colorado and my coworker got the special for the day (two tacos with beans and rice). The dish looked amazing. However, the food was not. The tortillas were also not that appetizing. Overall food was decent but I've had better. We waited a good while for our check. The table right next to us received their check before they were even done eating and we were visibly done and ready because they had already taken our plates. Sooooo good , came to Merced for vacation, so was looking to eat Mexican authentic food. Found them on yelp so decided to give them a try . Their posole & menudo exceeded my expectations! Went there twice recently, and I ordered the chorizo and eggs with beans and flour tortillas. The chorizo had good flavor, and I liked the beans. I also ordered a pancake, which is not something I would think would be on their menu. They are my favorite by far, just delicious. It is the reason I went back a second time. Worst relleno ever. So disappointed. The cheese and dough edges were too tough to chew. Bland rice and beans, but great ice tea with very little ice. Smiles? Not one to be found. Oh, and they refused to take the relleno (spit out back on to my plate) off the bill. read more

Salsa to die for! In town for a concert at the Merced Theater and this was the only spot that welcomed us with a smile. The Italian restaurant in town felt they were too good for a walk in cause of the event. The Big bowl of chips and Salsa had me drooling. The two ladies at the front had a big smile and were happy to seat us right away. We had the 2 taco special for $9 and a few beers. Extremely disappointed! For starters, the chips and salsa. The chips tasted so stale and old. Its was gross. I went in to have a plate of huevos rancheros. 99% of restaurants who serve this plate serve it with rice and beans. THEY do not! It was 2 eggs, over easy (they failed) in a good sauce with runny beans. Again NO rice. The corn tortillas tasted old also. (I'm Mexican. I know my Mexican food) I over paid way too much for this. Last time I will ever eat here. One star was too much. The service was fast, but only cause there was only 2 other patrons. That should have been my first clue. read more

Nice dainty little place. Stopped by here when returning from a camping trip. Boy were we hungry and we ordered tons of food. All were very happy from Enchiladas to Burritos and everything in between. Very flavorful unlike the chain restaurants monotone flavors. Service was prompt and courteous. I came to this place after a long trip in Yosemite National Park. The people were absolutely friendly. (We had a dog with us and they were totally fine with it since we sat outside.) I ordered the pulled pork and it was splendid. The rice and beans on the side were awesome. The corn tortilla that came was nice heated and tasted splendid with the pork. I had no complaints. Some of the other dishes that our party ordered was the fish tacos and chimichanga. They absolutely enjoyed it for their taste, portion, and price. One person from the party was interested in the drinks and were given a sample to try before ordering. The folks were absolutely friendly, patient, and awesome. Their food is OK. Very pricey to the portions that they serve. I ordered the menudo without meat, only the hominy and soup and they still charge full price. The large size is a small compared to other Mexican restaurants and has no special flavors for that price. The only reason I come back is because they offer homemade flour tortillas (1.50) for two of them. read more

Good Mexican food and good, attentive service. Was there last night and placed was packed, with one server. She told us she would be right with us and acknowledged I knew she was busy. She served 5 tables in less than 5 minutes. Took our order, Chile Verde for me a two Tacos for my wife. Had everything in a few minutes. This is common. The food is always hot and good. I wanted to try this place last summer, while driving through, after seeing the old school 7-Up neon sign over the old diner space. It didn't happen then, but I came back. The old lunch counter is still there, but with a different kind of food--but still hearty, comfortable, and affordable. Caldo de rez was a fresh blend of flavors, clear brother, stewed vegetables, and well-done beef. Chicken mole was a little sweet and cinnamon-laced for my taste, but the choice of a leg and thigh rather than stringy breast meat made the dish. Refritos were excellent. But the tortillas--damn, that's what they are supposed to taste like. I don't think they make 'em fresh on site (I saw the plastic bags), but something about the preparation stands out. The taste and texture were exceptional. Not surprisingly, the chips were just as tasty, served with a nice, well-reduced, well-blended salsa. So I didn't actually try their food...but I had a craving for homemade tortillas (none of that packaged stuff!). I called and the woman on the phone said she'd have them warm for me when I got there. $3.25 (slightly more or less, I forgot what the actual amount was) for 6 pretty good tortillas. Note that they come in orders of 2. Would I come back for more tortillas? Heck yes. This is 1 of 57 Mexican Restaurants in Merced. On my journey to all 57.. this was my first stop. Marie's "homemade enchiladas" stuffed with chicken was delicious. Oh! and when you go in, ask your waitress (who is awesome by the way) to pick the meat. I have no idea what was on my taco except that is melted in my mouth. The chips and salsa that are served to you as soon as you sit wherever you would like were the perfect amount of spice. I'd say for my first stop on this Mexican path I now travel, I am hopeful.
