The food was actually good, but unfortunately the service and overall experience really took away from it. While my family and I were still eating, the staff started cleaning up after a large party and used bleach to clean the floors while we were sitting there eating. The smell was so strong that it completely ruined my appetite. We also felt like we were being rushed, even though the restaurant didn't close for another hour. I understand cleaning and getting things ready for closing, but using such a strong chemical like bleach while customers are still eating was really unpleasant. We came in to enjoy a meal and left feeling uncomfortable and rushed. The food was good, but based on the service and this experience, I'm not sure I would return. read more

Great spot for some good eats and drinks. The Michelada with Corona was pretty good, kind of like a Bloody Mary. The chimichanga was okay, the chicken inside it was a little dry. But I could t stop eating it... my plate was empty when it was over. My wife had the fried Talapia. It was good and juicy. Not overcooked. Very crunchy too! Seems like we left feeling really full. Met the family here at Lupian's for our monthly family dinner. The restaurant is spacious, clean and has a nice comforting feel. The service was so so. The young man seemed a bit confused with who ordered what, but the young lady at the bar was on point. I had the bacon wrapped shrimp plate with rice and beans. I also ordered a carnitas taco with flour tortilla for $7.99+ tax. The shrimp plate was good because anything wrapped in bacon is going to be delicious When the young man brought out my carnitas taco it was on corn tortillas so I had to let him know that I ordered the flour tortilla taco. He took it back and moments later brought me back the sad taco you see in the picture. It seems like all they did was warm up a flour tortilla and scraped the filling off the corn tortilla taco they initially brought me. There was no lettuce, no tomato, no love. I didn't ask but for a flour tortilla taco I half expected the flour tortilla to be fried like a taco shell. Either way for $7.99 + tax, it was the saddest flour tortilla taco that I've ever had, not to mention there was only about 2oz of carnitas in the entire taco. Very disappointing read more

A friend had recommended this place for happy hour. The restaurant has a private bar space on the corner of the building. The food was generic, nothing special. The service is slow so don't come here hungry ready to eat quickly. I ordered the $2 margaritas. I noticed they had Grand Malo tequila which I had bought for $25 at the grocery store and I liked it so I ordered 3 shot for my friends to try it. When I got the bill and paid it without making sure it is right. I got home and pulled the receipt out. Wow! I saw they charged me $17 for each shot. Went to try this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed due to the local university graduation. Was told at first it'll be 10-15 minutes for a table so we waited. Then once we were seated we were given chips and salsa and our drinks ordered within 5 minutes of being seated. Half the group ordered waters and got their drinks quick. The half of the group that got alcoholic drinks waited 20 minutes for their drinks. By the time the bar drinks arrived at the table they were sweating from sitting so long. The food took about 40 minutes after the bar drinks were delivered and after the 2 rounds of chips for the group. I got the aguachile mixto and there was pieces of oyster shells at the bottom that cut into my mouth. Had high hopes for this place as it was rated highly but definitely not worth a second visit. read more

Such a beautiful new space with the same comforting, homey Lupian vibe! This team has since moved from downtown/16th st into the El Portal plaza (former Las Islitas) and it feels and looks great. The dining room is very spacious and has artistic wall art from the sea. The staff here are all so pleasant and attentive. There's also a designated bar area with a full bar: spirits, beer, and wine. There are also TVs available if you wanna sit in and watch a game. On a regular night, I usually like to order some fish/shrimp tacos. But if I want something heavier and a signature dish of this restaurant, I'll get the Molcajete. You also can't go wrong with a shrimp tostada or some ceviche. What a nightmare! Food poisoning, dirty silverware, terrible waitresses. The worst dining experience of my life. We took our out-of-town friends out to dinner. There was a table with 8 people In the center of the restaurant who had finished eating, empty plates but lots of drinks on the table. I just figured they would be leaving soon. They were as obnoxious as you could imagine. Half were drunk, cursing, being confrontational dirt bags. The waitress kept serving them drinks, riling them up even more. The cursing just kept getting louder and constant. I was embarrassed for bringing people to this restaurant. The dirt bags started taunting other customers "You don't know me, I don't give a F***". It was rediculous. The wait staff just kept bringing drinks, not asking them to move to the bar area or quiet down. Patrons were leaving shaking their heads. I asked our waitress for the check early just to get my visiting friends away from this fiasco. I can't believe Lupian's didn't cut them off or at least have them move to the bar area. We definitely will not be back. We were sick all night from the food. You lost some good customers tonight. Ambiance is whatever, cheap paint job from the previous failed restaurant. Visited this place for lunch while working nearby and glad I did. The restaurant had great customer service and the waitresses were all amazing and friendly. The food had good flavor and the portion sizes were good. This plate cost $24.99 so a little on the expensive side but it was worth it. The ambiance is a nice restaurant with good clean tables and overall good atmosphere. I would definitely recommend it here and would eat here again when I'm in the area again. read more

Visited today via DoorDash - yes shameful, but was a necessity. The food was incredible! Today the beans rice etc were on point! I think I've mentioned this before, but the new location is perfect. Lupian's has established a faithful customer base here in Merced. They began in a smaller shop near the bus station and have since moved to a plaza in northern Merced. The new location is beautifully decorated and the staff keeps the place spotless. We went on a Saturday morning and saw the place fill up quickly. Our meal was delish and the portion sizes were huge! This was my first meal at Lupian's and I was not disappointed! They have an extensive sea food offering, all with a Mexican flair. Although I didn't go with the sea food for my first meal here, I'll be back to try it out too. The dining area is expansive, clean and comfortable. The food was great with large portions.
