This isn't a butcher shop. Just a regular boutique market with a tiny meat counter. Waste of time!

Ask the Community - Marin Sun Farms

Is all the beef grass-finished? I see a review says so but would like to hear it from the company. I noticed that nothing on their website indicates that it isn't corn/grain-finished. How do you define grass-fed? 100% grass foraged? Hay? Silage?

Don't expect cornfed style marbling and fat content, then whine that the grass fed is "dry" or "tough".

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

Hey I like some veggies and fruit and shrooms also but most of my diet is meat and seafood, as mama God intended it to be. It is awesome to have such a nice family owned butcher shop in town that is all about quality. I have purchased oysters, chicken, salmon, bacon and different cuts of meat over the years and all fresh and fantastic. They also have duck which I haven't purchased yet be cause I don't have my brothers insane duck recipe. That will change soon. The other items I buy are bones and oxtails for bone broth. In the freezer section are meaty oxtails, lamb and beef neck bones and sometimes knuckle bones. In the meat counter they have cut up leg bones. My number one place for bones. Store bought bone broth pales in compareson to my recipe and even though a takes a hot minute to make, it's worth it. The staff is great and very knowledgeable.

It will be worth the extra miles to return to my butcher in Berkeley. I trimmed 7.oz of thick fat and gristle off this, and now have to try and piece it together like a puzzle. I was a Chef! I know how to cut meat! I've added pictures of the Switcharoo cut he wrapped for me. I wanted this dinner to be a positive offering for family, closest friends and Vietnam Veterans my husband served with as we memorialized my husband.$170. 00 PSH! Way too much for this mess. For the leg of lamb, I think most people get a whole leg of lamb. That was way too much for me and I think the butcher thought I was confused when I asked for less and asked me what I was doing with it. He ended up saying he could give me a half leg of lamb and I agreed. Thar was about 3 and a half pounds (bone included) which was the perfect amount. I seared it and then braised it and the meat fell off the bone. Delicious and the price was pretty good. I was cooking my first pork chop and decided to come here to get it. Their pork isn't labeled as Berkshire or Duroc or anything but that probably keeps the price down. For chops, they had boneless, bone in, and double cut (which was also bone in). I mentioned I wanted it to be about 2 inches thick and the butcher said to get the double cut.I got 2 beautiful thick pork chops for $6.99 a pound so about $18 total. The regular cut bone in pork chops were the same price though obviously smaller. I brined this overnight and reverse seared it and it was great. The chop was a loin chop- loin and then a tenderloin nugget- not a pure rib chop. Cooked really nicely and was tender which I think was partially the overnight brine and also their pork. They do sell some vegetables and grocery supplies if you want to just make a single stop. They also have a deli with some sandwiches that looked good and prepared foods. I was very focused on buying the things I came in for and getting on with my day both times but I would like to take a closer look in the future as it looked good. Solid butcher shop and clearly loved since it was busy both on a weekend and during the week. I'm sure I will be back.
