I mean what's not to like about the concept of Korean flavors, duck, and sausages? my expensive mistake! extremely poorly-made exploding sausages; all sausages badly-stuffed and tied, and all irregularly sized, full of crunchy gristle, irregularly ground meat, and loaded with fat, with so much salt you could have de-iced roads with them. great idea, absolutely atrocious execution. disappointing and inedible! side note: I actually measured the amount of fat that came out of one giant sausage after it shrunk to half its size in the pan: 2/3 cup fat!!!! learn to make a tasty sausage people! read more

I asked a question here: Is all the beef grass-finished? I see a review says so but would like to hear it from the company. I noticed that nothing on their website indicates that it isn't corn/grain-finished. How do you define grass-fed? 100% grass foraged? Hay? Silage? Have been coming here for years. Love the consistent quality of the meat & the humane treatment of the animals. In the last few months, I have noticed a drop in the quality of the butchery & meat offerings in the case. There's also been quite a bit of turnover. At one point the case was crowded with 3x the normal amount of meat of unpopular cuts like oxtail. Hesitated to write a review, but the condition of the meat today was just too much. The pork had a grey/green tinge, and some cuts of meat in the case was sitting in pooled blood. The meat clearly looked like it was old. Hoping management will fix this as its a wonderful local option for residents. read more

What happened? I used to love the meats here, but quality has gone way, way, way down. And the butchery is a complete joke. I should have asked to see my NY STRIP before purchase. One side was only about half the height of the other. I can't support this place anymore. I'm happy to pay up for quality but it justisnt here anymore. We traveled from Mill Valley to get pork shanks that we couldn't find locally to make Osso Bucco for New Years. Kris took our order over the phone. When we arrived, he told us they were cutting them to have them in the best presentation. They used two separate legs so they would be the size we requested. All the staff were friendly and courteous. Kris in particular was really helpful and remembered me from my specific order. They are unprofessional. While the quality of the meat is good, the service from Marin Sun Farms is horrendous, particularly at this location. You're supposed to put in an order for what you want and they are supposed to call you back. They do not call back--they do not even leave a voice message. You constantly have to call them, and they're less than enthusiastic about getting back to you. I would recommend going to the Berkeley/El Cerrito Natural Grocery instead and buying meat from Stemple Creek Farms or others. Going there in person, the young people working there seem to shrug their shoulders when helping you. read more

I notice a mixed melange of reviews here....some good and some very bad and that surely should not be the case at this 'boutique' meat market which has prices beyond the beyond. Some weeks ago I tried some ground chuck and found it to be ropy, dry and without any noteworthy taste at all. This chuck was priced at over $12 per pound---outrageous. Once i bought 4 pork chops and found myself with a bill of over $50 for four chops!!!!! Oh and has anyone in these reviews mentioned the fact that no one there ever answers the phone???? You can call until you're blue in the face and no one will pick up. In contrast i just want to mention ver brugge just down the street and in business for eons. Wonderful and very friendly service there and ground chuck at $5.95 per lb! Also wonderful fresh fish etc and much more reasonable pricing policy. read more

Reading all the 1 star reviews Would make you think there's nothing but rude people working here but my visit today was proof of the opposite. I wasn't sure what beef roast would be good sous vide so Lo took her dear sweet time walking me up and down the meat case talking about all her favorite cuts, recipes and other cooking tips for getting the most out of each cut. Full service butcher shops are great if you love to cook like me! I like to try different recipes and it's so wonderful to be able to get the cuts of meat you want from a butcher shop like Marin Sun Farms. We've been buying meat here for several years. I don't cook steak very often, but when I do, I buy it here. They have great quality meat (beef, pork and chicken), and I don't mind splurging on a pricey NY Strip or Ribeye for me and my husband every once in a while. We've also bought beef short ribs, pork ribs, pork belly, whole chicken (had them cut it up in pieces), sausages, eggs and bacon here. We've also ordered our Easter ham here in the past. This particular store is in the Rockridge Market Hall complex, so it's very convenient. You can buy your veggies from the Produce store next door, get your prepared food, fresh pasta and artisanal cheese from The Pasta Shop and get your seafood needs from Hapuku Fish Shop. There is also the wine store, Market Hall bakery and Highwire Coffee in the same complex. read more

Everything is local, pasture raised and finished. This is my go-to place for pork belly. I call ahead and get 3 lb at a time. They cut it into 1" inch strips and score the rind into diamonds for me. I've always experienced excellent service here. The counter people are friendly, helpful and polite. I can also get beef bones for broth, oxtail, chicken thighs, ready-to-cook bacon burgers, steak and sausages here. Their merguez lamb sausages are excellent. They always have pastured eggs and you'll have the surprise of different colored shells in each dozen. They also have bone broth ready in mason jars and lard. Once in a while, I've seen more "exotic" items like beef tongue and rabbit. I haven't seen any organ meats so you'd have to ask. The Thanksgiving sheets are already out and I'm putting in my order for a whole duck. It seems the staff here really do not care about customer service at all, probably because of their typical clientele, so not completely to blame. There was pretty long line in the early evening, about 48 degrees, and the staff couldn't care less about the customers standing outside waiting. It was like the staff were moving in slow-motion. Then when I get within hearing-range of the customer interaction, the customers were chatting away with the staff, about the weather, about the holidays, about bs in general, in complete disregard for the people behind them in line. A group of us bought 200 pounds of beef on their website,we are still recovering from the shock and treatment we received. We paid for 200 pounds worth of beef @ $6.99/Ib. We received 130 pounds. We called them to inform them that we were short 70 pounds of beef thinking they had made an error, only to be told that the rest of the weight was lost due to the hanging industrial weighing scale. How does that even make sense??? Weight is weight no matter the scale used. I can understand a few pounds off but 70 pounds difference???. They were not even willing to reason with us or even go through the order to ensure they sent us what we paid for. The meat has good flavor but not worth the deception. read more

I shop at the Market Hall location of Marin Sun Farms on a regular basis, and generally have a wonderful experience, up until Thanksgiving! My brother ordered a VERY expensive Heritage turkey, which I picked up in a box.. brought home to cook for the family and was so very disappointed with the turkey.. it looked emaciated and sickly.. we were so disappointed, we went to Whole Foods and bought a proper turkey for significantly less than my bro' paid for the Marin Sun Farms Heritage turkey... we went bank to complain to the manager and he listened politely and just stared at us.. no expression, no apology, just an attitude of, so what, who cares, not my problem... the manager at Marin Sun Farms at Market Hall should be required to take a training course on customer service and maybe learn to be a problem solver.. we weren't expecting a full refund, maybe a bit of empathy or, next time you come in let me make it up to you somehow.. we would've been satisfied with that, but with the unblinking, zombie like stare from the manager on duty today, we felt he needs to be re-trained in basic customer service and become a problem solver.. I love the fact that I can buy locally grown and butchered meat near me. It's wildly expensive, but my motto is "pay twice as much, eat half as much" which seems to be a good way to eat meat in this day and age. But, some months ago i bought two pieces of veal shank for osso buco. I froze it when i got home, and when i took it out the other day, i saw that the bones were so large that it could not have been true veal. I cooked it, according to a standard recipe, for over 3 hours and the meat was still very tough. This had to be an older bovine. And because the bones were so big, my $35 package of meat yielded very little actual meat. I feel a little ripped off. I'm updating this review because Marin Sun Farms totally made good on the anomalous package of meat I had bought. They're the best! read more

The woman who served us grabbed two chicken breasts for us and then handled payment with change in notes and coins all with her bare hands (and of course not washing her hands between the two tasks). I don't mind paying top dollar for high quality product; I understand the costs of producing heritage meat from small farms. But $15.99/lb for a pork chop??? Please. I went to Marin Sun on Monday around noon to find their counter half set (empty), and not much there to speak of. The counter fellow was friendly and asked if he could help. There were two brown pork chops in the case. I asked why they were mottled brown and grey. He didn't know and asked the butcher. The butcher came out and looked at the meat and said "they've got a bit of age on them." I asked what that meant (knowing that it meant that the meat had been cut many days ago and was starting to go off). He replied "nothing." I asked when the meat had been put in the case - he responded that it had been put in the case on Thursday - FIVE DAYS after it had been cut. I asked if there was any fresher meat that I could purchase. He said no. I drove to Star Meats and got some just cut Niman Ranch pork chops for half the price ($7.99/lb). So, one star for a nice looking store in a convenient location with parking, one star for a helpful if hapless counter person, and that's it. read more

I have given this place many chances, to redeem them selves after clearly communicating to them what was wrong in previous times ,, still I get horrible cuts of meat ,, spending 35 dollars for two people . When I told the manger ,what was wrong he gives me this empty sort of I do not care look . NOW without hesitation I will not be shopping at that meat department any more ,as I continue to be a loyal customer to all the other shops at market hall . I liked Enzo's quality, the meats were always tasty and looked fresh. I also love Ver Brugge - but it is a hike sometimes. Enter Marin Sun Farms in Enzo's old location. I figured I would give it a try after walking past it many times. The service and attitude of the folks there seems nice enough - haven't experienced any rudeness or other service issues outlined by others. The reason I won't go back is the quality... I understand what aged meat looks like - but on several occasions of browsing their meats in the case looked dried out and leathery. Like they had been sitting in the case too long or the air circulation was too high and causing a drying effect. On the one occasion that I did buy two steaks - two different ribeyes - one 'regular' ribeye at 17.95 a pound and one at 27.95 a pound that had been aged for 45 days - I was really disappointed. I wanted to do a meat tasting and see what the difference might be and also have a treat. Both my husband and I thought the same thing - both steaks tasted fishy. The 'aged' steak didn't have an aged taste it had a serious fish taste. Like bad fish. I have eaten many 'aged' steaks and grass fed meats...mortons, ruths chris, flemings, harris'...etc.... and never have I tasted anything remotely resembling cod liver oil in a steak. When one spends $45 for two steaks one expects an amazing steak. I felt ripped off. Another thing that is worth mentioning ... they do a "porchetta" sandwich whereby they slice off pieces of a rolled roasted pork. They leave the roast in the middle of the room - unrefridgerated and uncovered ... for every patron to breath on and sneeze around... pretty unappetizing. I also noticed they make their porchetta sandwiches and leave those out minimally wrapped...how long??? Last time I checked - food - especially meats needed to be refridgerated if they aren't cured and even then they should be in a fridge after they are sliced open. I get that a person could leave a sandwich out for a short amount of time... but I simply wouldn't trust it _____________ I read some reviews of the SF location that also shared concerns about food temp safety... I then read the California Food Safety Board website - hot foods (i.e. PORCHETTA!) need to be kept at 140 + or no longer than 2 hours at room temp. .... I leave it to you to decide about the timing of how long that porchetta has been sitting out..but I can tell you that I dined at Oliveto recently and I know for a fact that I walked by it at 3 PM and again at 7 PM... 4 hours later... same porchetta display.... yikes! read more

But the butchers here are knowledgeable, always happy to cut meat for you or debone something if they can, and it's grass fed, pasture raised and sustainable. Marin Sun Farms in Market Hall has some good quality meat but generally overpriced. My biggest issue is with their grass-fed beef -- it is incredibly tough. For about $30+ per ribeye (by the way, why oh why it is cut so thick???), I expect something that tastes good and isn't work to chew. Also, I remember that they used to have butchers who were knowledgeable and would offer tips for cooking or could at least answer such questions. Not so anymore. Recently I've asked for cooking temperature/timing and the responses were "I don't know" or the person needed to ask someone in the back who never came out. I get the feeling they don't like their jobs. So now I just stick with Ver Brugge. read more

The quality of the meat at Marin Sun is very impressive which is what keeps me coming back. I try to only eat quality, grass fed, pasture raised meat because I am opposed to the industrialized meat industry. I believe the owners are awesome folks and doing great things. Some of the staff are nice. However, most of the staff are short, ignore you during the transaction, and generally make you feel that you are making them do a chore to serve you. I came in 5 minutes before they closed to pickup some ground chicken; half of the meat cases were already covered and poultry was removed; When I inquired about if they were still open (which they were), I felt like an annoyance. I decided not to purchase anything in which the employees happily said goodbye to my business. Stock bones for $5/lb? C'mon... that's the scraps that many butchers will give out for free. The sausage is way over-salted and over-spiced for my taste, and I love salty food! They are also often over-stuffed and burst when I cook them. read more
