It is awesome to have such a nice family owned butcher shop in town that is all about quality. I have purchased oysters, chicken, salmon, bacon and different cuts of meat over the years and all fresh and fantastic. They also have duck which I haven't purchased yet be cause I don't have my brothers insane duck recipe. That will change soon. The other items I buy are bones and oxtails for bone broth. In the freezer section are meaty oxtails, lamb and beef neck bones and sometimes knuckle bones. In the meat counter they have cut up leg bones. My number one place for bones. Store bought bone broth pales in compareson to my recipe and even though a takes a hot minute to make, it's worth it. The staff is great and very knowledgeable. read more

I spent $170.00 On a center cut beef loin at Barons . I told the man who served me that I was a making Beef Wellington . He cuts off the tip, cuts the center cut which is beautiful/ uniform, nice and red. He asks if I would like it trimmed ...yes please! He's trimming off the fat, I'm watching and admiring the cut,leaving a gorgeous 3+ Lb.center cut, just as I expect for $56.00 a pound. This is a memorial dinner to honor my husband who just passed. I get home, unwrap it, and it's the goddamn tip! UNTRIMMED with a big slice thru it on one side! ((Temper, Temper)). Needless to say you have lost a frequent customer. It will be worth the extra miles to return to my butcher in Berkeley. I trimmed 7.oz of thick fat and gristle off this, and now have to try and piece it together like a puzzle. I was a Chef! I know how to cut meat! I've added pictures of the Switcharoo cut he wrapped for me. Located in the Marketplace, Baron's has great cuts of fish and meats. They will scale, skin, clean, etc. Caviar and smoked salmon is also available. You can request for your meat and fish to be packed in ice. It's a bit pricey, but the quality of the fish and meats is worth it! The friendly and knowledgeable service at Baron's is top notch! I was in the mood for a good homemade pot roast the other day so I came to Baron's to get their recommendation for a good cut for my plans. The employee (didn't catch his name) suggested the chuck roast and even explained the difference between another cut of meat I was inquiring about. He told me the cheaper cut will be better for my pot roast. I always love honest recommendations and not being upsold for the sake of upselling. Baron's is also the go-to butcher shop for rare cuts like Denver steak. IYKYK about Denver cut; it's great for sous vide and then seared to perfection. They have some wagyu cuts and I think I even saw picanha aka coulette steaks! Shout out to Alex O. for exceptional service and a great memory when I stopped by many months ago! It was very fresh and delicious. Real catfish, not what you find at Safeway or in the freezer section, that may be SWAI which is used as a substitute. So, let me start this review by saying that after walking away for 15 minutes and eventually dealing with another employee, I did walk away with a BEAUTIFUL rack of lamb. That is the second star in this review. So ends the nice things I have to say about Baron's. When I first walked up, I asked an employee for a rack of lamb. He pulled a rack from the display, and pulled the sticker off. That sticker clearly said "unfrenched" and was listed at $35 per pound. When they rung it up, they charged it as a frenched rack, at $45 per pound. A frenched rack of lamb has been cleaned to the bone, but has also had enough fat and connective tissue removed to justify a $10/lb increase in price. The rack they presented me DID have clean bones, but had a full inch worth of inedible tissue along the top of the rack. When I pointed this out to the blond-haired butcher, she told me it was the paper they use to package their meat. Important note, they use black butcher paper to package their meat. When I expressed my opinion that it hadn't been frenched properly, she tried to explain what "frenched" means, and that the clean ends of the bones was OBVIOUSLY evidence that I was in error. Strike one, not knowing their own product and attempting to belittle the customer over their own misunderstanding. Shocked, I purchased the meat and walked away. "Whatever." I thought, "Its my wife's birthday, and I've butchered enough meat myself to finish the job despite the fact that I know I'm paying ~$10 on that rack for inedible tissue." However, while I was finishing my shopping trip in the rest of the market, I noticed that their head butcher had actually marked this particular rack with where they would like it to be frenched to, which is where my measurement of 1" comes from. A single clean knife stroke laterally across the entire rack on each side, clearly someone's boss showing their subordinates how they would like their work to be represented. After noticing that, I decided not to take their butcher's word that this was properly handled. When I brought it back, the butcher I talked to immediately saw what I was talking about and offered to make it right. When he opened it though, he mentioned a smell that wasn't right and offered to french a new rack for me. Strike two, they sold me meat that they themselves referred to as smelly. Once he finished, as I mentioned, I did end up walking home with the quality of meat I was expecting for the price they're charging. However, this brings us to strike three. The butcher offered to "just give" me the new rack. That would be fantastic customer service! The problem is, the new rack was over $15 LESS expensive than the over $90 I had already spent on smelly, improperly butchered meat. At this point, I was done arguing and simply cut my losses. I understand that this is probably unlikely to be your experience, and I really don't want the beautiful meat I did end up receiving to get lost in the negative. That being said, I experienced absolutely ABYSMAL customer service, respect, and general knowledge of the product being sold from the staff I spoke to initially, and the guy who made it right was more interested in shutting me up than actually dealing with the problems his coworkers had created. P.S. To Baron's- If you read this, I am happy to provide photographic evidence of every step of the nonsense I described in this rant. My shopping trip was on 2/2/24, I'm assuming your register records go back at least the five days since this occurred. read more

I am so grateful to have Baron's! Everything about this business is perfection. The fellas behind the counter are always warm, welcoming, and super friendly and helpful. Their premium cuts of meat and other quality offerings make me giddy when I walk by the displays. I'm never disappointed when I make a purchase. I felt compelled to write this review, however, because Baron's made me look like the most amazing hostess the other day. I bought a beautiful 10lbs rib roast to cook for a dinner party. Guests were raving about how delicious my prime rib was. Social media friends were begging for my recipe. The leftovers were just as good! Tbh, cooking required nearly zero effort. I bit disappointed but not shocked. Yesterday I came to pick up some meat. I asked one butcher if the had ground turkey he told that they did on the other side. I walk over to the other side. The butcher who was on the other side was helping someone else and I should have been next. Another lady decided to stand not to far away from me to wait for assistance as well. Once the butcher was finished helping his current customer a lady walked up to him, began to ask him question and he began to prepare her order while me and another customer stood there. At this point the other butcher looks at me, looks at the other waiting customer and walk away. I stood there for a few more seconds to see if the butcher would apologize and say "I'll be right with you" or something. He said absolutely nothing The beautiful part of all of this is that I do have options so there was no need to get upset. I can take my money elsewhere. I have been a customer at Baron's since they have opened in C.V. Marketplace from day one. I was so looking forward to a high quality butcher close by and wanted to support my community. The customer service the last few years is deplorable. I grew up in the restaurant industry and I know a good product. When purchasing seafood there many times I noticed in the case that the product I wanted to purchase looked a little old, I asked if there was any thing fresher in the back only to be told yes but he wasn't going to bring it out until the measly filets in the case sold first. Other occasions I have waited patiently and when I get noticed by whom ever is behind the counter I am completely ignored. I have never complained but I have been treated vey poorly on too many occasions. Can't really understand the staff's attitude. Expecting good customer service at a quality market is a requirement for me especially when purchasing an expensive product. Honestly, the staff behind the counter look miserable. The gentleman that used to own Barons was so professional and friendly, as was his staff. Now, in my opinion, they all have an attitude, like they are doing us a favor to wait on us. I love this place! Tucked into the marketplace with ample parking. The guys are so friendly and everything is extremely reasonably priced. I assumed a butcher shop like this I'd be paying an arm and a leg but it's not. The cuts of steaks are all fresh and nicely sized. They have various ranges of cuts at different price points. The guys are always willing to make a recommendation or answer questions. I mostly come here for duck breast because it's extremely hard to find elsewhere. Never ordered from a butcher before, and everyone was super helpful getting me set up to order 15 ossobuco veal shanks for a last minute event on 10/30. I spoke with 3 different young guys on the phone and in-person, and they were all very nice and chill. The actual Castro Valley Marketplace is very cute and hipsterish; when you walk into the building someone at the door gives you a dollop of hand sanitizer. This one's easy... Just had a birthday a couple weeks ago and my wife surprised me with... wait for it... a 25-lb. rack of Prime grass-fed dry-aged beef from Baron's. I say surprised because until now, she has been busting my chops (no pun) about my cholesterol and blood pressure almost non-stop. She knows how much I love red meat and figured if I was gonna indulge, it might as well be the good (healthy?) organic stuff with no hormones. It will be kept in a climate controlled case for 4-6 months. I can call or drop in anytime to have it cut and prepped anyway I want (e.g. individual steaks or rib roast). Tried it for the first time a week ago and it was awesome. The nice part is they keep the dry-aged meat behind glass doors, so I can visit and whisper sweet nothings to it anytime I like. (See picture I posted in the gallery.) I am thinking of having them change my name tag to read "Bad Motherf*cker," like Samuel Jackson's wallet in Pulp Fiction. I agree with Julia P. I have had the same kind of problem, with one butcher especially, but there are 2 others. I don't eat red meat except for a very occasional lamb chop. I suspect that if you are buying beef, you are treated better and the quality is also better. I buy fish most of the time. A recent visit, I bought chicken livers, true cod and a lamb loin chop. The butcher was impatient and just rude. He threw the livers around like they're not food I was going to eat. I also have gotten bad livers more than once. I asked for fresh to be safe; he rolled his eyes. I asked for the cod and he lifted the first piece and said impatiently, Is this all right?! I said yes, but as he took it out I saw it was much too large. I told him that; he ignored me. Not wanting to have a disagreement with this always disagreeable man, I just thought that I'd make soup with the overage. I checked the lamb, asked where it came from. He said New Zealand, so I took one. I asked for the second chop because the first was as much fat as meat. I stepped away and he grabbed something from the case and quickly wrapped brown paper awkwardly around it. I asked him to show it to me and he literally just looked away & ignored me, even when I asked again. When I checked when I got home..yes, it was the fatty piece. A couple hours later I made a small dinner with part of the fish. After about three bites, I was thinking that it didn't taste like the last piece I had purchased. I was disappointed because the last one was delicious. I raised the last piece of fish & smelled that ammonia smell of spoiled fish! I immediately threw out what I was eating & checked the rest in the refrigerator, also bad. I hoped I hadn't eaten enough to make me ill; I had. I found out in the middle of the night. I was so ill that I set the phone by my bed in case I had to call the paramedics. I was sick for 4 days, & 4 days recovering. It was a week before I could begin to eat normally. I eventually went back to the butchers. I began my order telling the butcher, a manager, I would start with chicken livers. While she weighed them out, I looked at the fish to choose and in a minute realized i just couldn't. The days I was ill flooded bad & when she asked what else, I said "that's all". She said she thought I had said "to start". I replied I did, but I can't order anything else & here's why. I told her what had happened & handed her the receipt. She refunded the price of the fish& apologized. Although I hadn't been able to eat the lamb & the livers either, I hadn't asked for further refund. A couple days ago, I went to Alameda Natural & as I left with my groceries & walked past the butcher, I realized I had always clenched when I came in the store, knowing I was going to the butcher. I had been relaxed as i shopped that day, because I knew i was never going to go to Barons again. Their prices are high, but that never mattered, because I was glad to pay for quality & good service. Without the guarantee of that, price matters. Let me add that not all the butchers are rude; some are very helpful, kind & knowledgeable, thus the 2 stars instead of 1, but beware, shoppers, of the fish & chicken & don't put up with bad service. read more

I've always loved shopping at Barons because of the high caliber of meat and the friendly service, but recently the service that I received from Amanda completely blew me away. I ordered a branzino through Baron meats for dinner, and the delivery kept getting pushed back. When I spoke with Amanda, she told me she'd do her best to get me a fish. She called a couple of her contacts and was able to secure me a branzino at a nearby location. Needless to say, I did end up making a purchase with her that day, but I was really touched by the commitment Amanda made to ensuring that I could get the fish I had ordered. Their prices can be very expensive here, but the quality and selection of specialty cuts are well worth every penny that you will spend. They carry a nice variety of fresh meats and charcuterie products, but by simply looking at their displays you can see that beef is their main source of profit. They carry all the popular grilling and roasting options such as Tri-Tip and standing rib roast, but where they differ from competitors is their selection of aged beef products. They beautifully display their aged beef for all to see as they shop throughout the market and with the fact that they properly label each item with brand and dates to properly select flavor profiles and texture is always a plus and more reason to order a roast for the holidays. read more

I ordered an expensive heritage turkey from Baron's because I was told when I called that the turkeys are never frozen. I picked it up today (the day before Thanksgiving) and when I got home, noticed that the turkey had bits of ice attached and the package had instructions to thaw the turkey. I just called again to explain what happened and to ask if the turkey is frozen. I was told that they're fresh and cooled to 28 degrees. I replied, "So... they're frozen." I purchased a small supposedly grass fed and aged prime NY strip. When ordering I asked for another one to be cut but was told that.s all we have, A bad sign, The steaks in the display case were from the small end and and had no visible eye, it was a grisly end cut that was tough and lacked any real flavor. Prime steaks should be a lush tender and tasty. Overpriced and under served is my opinion. I am from a 5 generation farming family in the midwest and know cattle on the hoof and in the display case. To the average consumer it all reads and sounds great, problem was the steak did not deliver on the plate. read more

If I need to be really sure I'm getting a good piece of meat, I'll take my business to Baron's. This last weekend, I had a BBQ for a few friends, and I found a tri-tip recipe that I wanted to try. Why I like to perform culinary experiments on my friends I'm not quite sure. To try to get some BBQ grocery shopping done early, I went to a place in SF, but didn't have a single lick of tri-tip (and that aside, their fillet mignon was gray with two days left until it's "sell-by" date-- vile!). I saw an ad for my local grocery that had tri-tip on sale, and I thought about going there. I would be anyway for other items... but I decided that I didn't want to mess around and chance it. Since this was to be the first BBQ of assuredly many this year, I wanted to kick it off right. I stopped in at the Marketplace in Alameda for Baron's on the day of the BBQ and picked up two honkin' slabs of cow, as well as some chicken thighs and some sausages. The tri-tip turned out pretty good, if I do say myself. The chicken wasn't the best I've made, but frankly, that had a lot more to do with the fact that I haven't BBQ'ed all winter, and I was cooking in the dark. More likely than not, I messed up Baron's chicken, not the other way around. The sausages are still sitting in my refrigerator, anxiously awaiting cooking. It hardly seems fair to judge a shop based on one experience when it's a local place that you're likely to return to. So let me point out that this wasn't my first visit to Baron's. I've been there before for buffalo, skirt steaks, and most recently, fillet mignon, which was quite possibly one of the best pieces of meat I've cooked. Baron's product is consistently great. My only grief is the price-point. Baron's is expensive-- but you get what you pay for. My five pounds of tri-tip was roughly forty dollars. I could likely have gone elsewhere, spent only about fifteen or twenty, and got about two-thirds of the way there in terms of taste and quality. If I'm cooking for myself, that's probably when I'll do next time. But for friends, I don't like to skimp. Baron's has the distinct advantage of being located in the same building as Farmstead Cheeses & Wines and JP Seafood Company, which means you can throw together one completely bitchin' meal with relative ease. If you're in the east bay, especially Oakland, Berkeley, or Alameda, I can't think of another butcher that compares. read more

I love an old school butcher. And this one is the shiz! Maybe I'm just a hick, but I've never seen a dry aged meat storage for customers. I love this! The meat is tagged with the customer's name and aged in the storage for 4-6 weeks. The best part is that you can actually come by and visit your meat! Kind of like looking at your newborn baby through the hospital nursery window and eagerly anticipating the day you get to take it home!! And throw it on the GRILL! read more
