My father used to come here when I was kid for our holiday lamb roast or prime ribs and that was over 40 years ago. So yeah this place has been a around. It used to be called Dimond meats and has been in that location since the 1920s. (learn something new everyday). I'd been meaning to start shopping here, mainly because the quality of grocery chain meat has gone down hill and since the man doesn't eat meat It's more prudent for me to get smaller portions which you can do at the butcher. You can also get other meat like rabbit, goat and such here. I'd visited the chain grocery and couldn't find fresh Turkey legs. What they had in their freezer case looked so unappetizing and were breasts or thighs and even the grocery butcher said to try the local meat market. So I called up Waylands to see if they had and they could get in with in a weeks time. When the time comes, off I trott (no pun intended) to pick them up. 4 fresh turkey legs, no frozen in preservative injected water. The line was out the door, but the staff were so helpful and quick. They smelled fresh, and cooked up great. I put them in the crockpot, so toughness or rubbery texture that the grocery poultry is starting to have. They also have andouille, boudin, turkey, hot links and other items. I can also get oxtails and have them cut smaller if I want. Once I've used up my frozen meat selection I will be return to them. Prices are great too. My 4 turkey legs only cost me $17. Also while waiting in line, I notice they have sandwiches, so I will swing by to pick one up before start of my shift one day. read more

Best quality ground turkey I've found by far hands down. And their chicken is good quality too. Very professional. Definitely reminds you of an old school butcher. I get most of my meat here, and they lunch meat was tasty and the bread was soft and fresh. This place rocks if you need meat. The selection spanned beef, pork, lamb, poultry, and a surprisingly good selection of deli meats. My selection for the day was short ribs that I braised and let me say they were perfectly trimmed and in restaurant lingo "pan ready." The results are simply amazing. I got some loose pork sausage for breakfast and some ground beef too for making meatballs. While I'm trying not to consume so much meat, if I do, I want the best quality possible. Their offerings rival costlier specialty shops in swankier neighborhoods. I've paid double for the quality I get here. This is a store for meat eaters! Next time you're in Oakland, and you have a hankering to eat alligator, goat, rabbit, frog legs, venison, Hog head cheese or pork belly--this is a great place to check-out. I got some Chicken Boudin Sausage that they made fresh. It was delicious, and reasonably priced. Besides unusual meats, they carry the regular types that supermarkets carry. They alsipo have lower prices for bulk buying. However, I didn't notice organic meats or beef that is finished with grass instead of grain (that is my preference). That is why this isn't a place that I would usually shop. But the next time I want fresh Boudin Sausage or if I want something that is not available at a regular market--like alligator--I will definitely remember to go here! read more

Everyone was super friendly and masked up, max of 3 customers in the store at one time. We picked up some different kinds of sausages, including boudin, which were all very tasty. So how did I found out about this place? Well it was a Sunday morning and it was "Meal Prep" day but I had NO meat to cook. I looked up tons of meat market places in my area and they were all closed!! ARGHH. What is a girl to do when all she wants is to cook a good damn meal!? I walked in and was greeted by a gentleman and an older woman. Let me warn you it's a small shop but it has EVERYTHING you need to make that GREAT meal! On the walls you will see all the meat packages with pricing and items that are included. You can substitute up to (2) items although I think I did more substituting that that's another story! HA The prices are truly reasonable and they have all different varieties of meat. I am SO thankful I found something reasonable priced and let alone...located 15 minutes from my house. I don't know why people don't patronize their neighborhood butcher anymore. Some people seem to think that if they go across the street and pay a premium for meat that it must be better quality. Nonsense. I've been coming here for two decades even before Wayland took ownership of this shop. The quality is better than any market in the Dimond area. As an example when I'm buying rib eyes, he offers choice cuts that are superior to anything in the area including Costco ( out of the area ) and cheaper in price. Safeway is a joke. The chicken here is a higher quality too. It's worth the price. He offers fresh meat and also excellent service. Who else would debone chicken for you for free ? Not at Safeway or Farmer Joe's. Well kept secret for some reason. It's about 33-75% cheaper than farmer joes and whole foods. Similar quality and superb knife work. The cuts are clean and well thought out. It is the opposite of sloppy. The amount of personal care is very high. Some people complain that the meat doesn't look fresh. Not true. Would you rather have it frozen? Nothing against farmer joes but the meat over there looks even sadder and costs twice as much. The meat at both places tastes great, so if you're into judging books by the cover then go to whole foods and pay 3x for a prettier product that will taste the same. The owners are Asian and I am Asian so maybe I get treated better because I spend money and am familiar but I've seen everyone treated the same way. I stick to the short ribs, ex-lean ground round, and bacon. I would like to try the smoked and salted meats. Their sandwiches are also good for less than $6. Great little meat market. I also shop at Farmer Joes across the street because I try to eat organic but some of it is too lean. Wayland has really good brisket and ham shanks much cheaper. They often carry catfish that isn't as common as it once was. Really nice couple run the store. It just plain feels good to shop at a little old fashioned butcher shop. read more

This place is a small operation with well cut meat. Granted, if you want the pasture raised stuff you can cross the street to farmer Joe's. BUT, this place is very competitive pricing-wise to most grocery stores and very personable and well stocked. So fortunate to have this amazing butcher here. Thanksgiving we ordered a turkey cut off the bone and separated out legs, thighs and breast. I tell you Wayne is an expert butcher, the carcass was clean. And he managed to cut it from under the side of the breast keeping the entire breast in one complete piece. We SousVide the turkey and it was the best we have ever had. I will be going back for my meat needs to Waylands. read more

The meat is of very good quality. Not Prather Ranch-level but very good at a fraction of the aforementioned. Never an attitude, superb service. If you want your rib roast 2.6 ribs thick, Wayland will cut it like that, then wrap it perfectly and label your packages, in case you by mutiple meats. Old school and perfect. read more
