Heard great things about the chef here so wanted to try it out for dinner with a friend. When we first checked in, it took a while for the waiter to check us in and find my name on the iPad. After i was seated, the owner or other waiter came by and rechecked me in again. I ordered the 5 handroll set and my friend got the vegan set. My friend got a tea and it came out cold, which was a surprise. The waiter was nice enough to bring out a hot tea in the house. The sushi chefs got our handroll sets confused - he gave my friend my tuna roll and me the vegan roll. Then he just picked up both and switched them. The pacing was good and they didn't make the hand rolls until we finished, but the sushi chefs weren't interactive and didn't really explain the hand rolls, fillings, and sauces. The fish was super fresh, but i was thrown off by the spicy tuna roll being canned tuna consistency not similar to the fatty tuna / chunks. Due to the experience of dining at the counter lacking, i probably wouldn't come back. Came here on a Saturday afternoon. Was pretty surprised to see this spot empty, so I was seated immediately. Eventually some people trickled in toward the end of my meal. It is all counter seating and they had hooks on the wall for jackets and bags. I ordered the 5 Handroll Set ($29), which consisted of Fatty Tuna, Salmon, Yellow Tail, Shrimp, and Confit Spicy Tuna. I was satisfied and full after the meal. Since I was the only one there, the rolls came out really quick. However, they didn't start making the next one until I finished the previous roll, so I did not feel rushed at all. The fish itself tasted fresh and I enjoyed every bite. The chef also gave me a Nova Scotia Oysters on the house to try, which was really nice of them to do so. This was soaked in Makgeolli Mignonette and Elderflower Ponzu, which went really well with the oyster. Overall this was a good experience and would come back again. read more

I travel to New York quite a bit for work and this spot is around the corner from the hotel I normally stay in, so last night I decided to stop in for a solo dinner (which I don't do often). From the moment I sat down, the team made me feel so welcome and taken care of. They checked in throughout the meal in a thoughtful way, and the service felt genuinely warm and kind, which made solo dining feel easy and enjoyable. The food was incredible. Every hand roll was fresh and perfectly prepared. The wagyu hand roll and the yellowtail were my favorites and I'm already looking forward to having them again. Standouts for me were the spicy salmon and waygu. Sliding the nori out of the plastic while maintaining the taco like shape was a little difficult. Great amount of filling all different. First of all, it's korean with Japanese influences, which already sets it apart from other handroll bars. Secondly, overall, the food was pretty great. Stopped by MariNe for a recent Friday dinner -- our party of 2 didn't have reservations but there were plenty of seats available when we got there around 6:30. There are roughly 15-ish seats at the counter, where you can watch them make your hand rolls in front of you. The decor is rather simplistic overall -- I like the elegant colour scheme and the rather minimalist design throughout, although I have to say that the bar stools are not the most comfortable to sit on. I ordered the hand roll set (comes with 5) -- they allow one substitution, and I'm not a big fan of shrimp, so I swapped that with scallops. Overall, they were not bad. I thought the fish tasted very fresh across the board, and I really liked the fatty tuna and salmon rolls the most. The confit spicy tuna was interesting -- the savouriness of the confit paired with the spiciness was an unusual combo, and was not quite to my taste. The texture was also a bit too oily/heavy. Price point was fine -- just under $40 (incl tax/tip) for 5 rolls is not very cheap, but not crazy either. I know this is a bold claim, but these are the best hand rolls in the city!! I recently tried Mari.ne and was super impressed with the quality of the seafood - everything was so fresh. I normally don't even like oysters, but I was slurping them down thanks to the insanely good sauces. My favorite was the salmon hand roll! We also got the yellowtail sashimi, scallop carpaccio, Janchi guksu, and yuzu mandarin cake. The carpaccio had such unique flavors, the sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the guksu was the perfect cozy bowl of warmth. The cake was a bit dry and sweet for my taste, but the flavors were still interesting. I wanted to give a new hand roll place a shot, and I walk by this one all the time. It totally wasn't what I was expecting. I was looking for a light meal, but all the fish was mixed with really heavy sauces. The toro almost tasted like it had mayo, and not the spicy kind. Everything was just really off putting. Then the finale piece, the spicy tuna, came out and I was all kinds of confused. It was topped with what looked and tasted like crushed hot Cheetos? Did the 5 handroll set and loved the first 4 handrolls! They were fresh, flavorful, and often marinated or had mix-ins so they were much more interesting than just plain rice and fish. The timing of each roll was also well-paced and not too rushed, and the waiter was friendly and attentive. Docking a star because the last handroll, the spicy tuna, was actually fully cooked and had the texture of canned chicken breast. I really did not enjoy this last one and would have opted to switch this out for the scallop if I knew it was dry and shredded. This is apparently one of the signatures at the chef's other location, but I personally felt it was a dry and heavy end to the meal. Docking a second star because of the way my payment was handled. Although I tapped-to-pay and the charge came through both on my virtual wallet and in my bank account, the manager kept saying he had to charge my card again in order to close me out. I pushed back a bit and showed him the charges on my phone several times, but ultimately it didn't feel like he would have let me leave without charging me again. He did get my email and confirmed the next day that he was able to charge me, but I noticed later that week that both charges did in fact go through and he had not proactively issued me a refund. He did do so when I notified him, but the entire ordeal spanned several days and the combination of not being listened to when I paid, not cancelling the second charge as soon as the first charge came through, and not proactively issuing a refund left a really bad taste made the experience ultimately a days-long headache instead of a relaxing dinner out. read more

It's not far from Bryant Park so easy to get to using public transportation. The fatty tuna still lives rent free in my mind. The confit spicy tuna... mind blowing. The soju cocktails were strong and so delicious (we didn't even realize they had booze until a few sips). The fish broth soup!! I could eat it everyday honestly. I was so full towards the end of the meal because we got the max amount of rolls in the hand roll set. I would suggest going with the 4 rolls if you plan on getting soup and appetizers. Solid. Dropped by on a Friday at 1pm with reservations to meet a friend and it was packed. The seating format is intimate, about a dozen seats at a sushi bar. White walls with brass hardware and glints of marine turquoise in the menu backing, pale green tinted glass lights. Natural earthen shades of serving ware. Reservations surely recommended during peak times. The menu is simple, order drinks, apps, hand rolls. I went with 3 hand rolls--salmon $6, scallop $6.50 and spicy tuna confit $6.50. I enjoyed them all--the nori was crisp and light, the seafood was fresh and each flavor profile distinct. As other reviewers have mentioned they lean toward marinated/sauce driven seafood filling rather than purely seafood forward rolls. I thought they did a good job balancing the flavors so the sauces didn't totally drown out the flavor of the fish. And the seafood to rice ratio was generous for the size of the roll. The salmon was diced and marinated in what tasted like a shoyu/soy sauce base, the scallops with mayo, the spicy tuna with spicy mayo and a bit of Japanese pickle for crunch. I love me some raw scallops and was glad these were tender and sweet, no sand. The spice level of the spicy tuna was pretty PG. My friend had eaten here before and recommended the Janchi Guksu $9.50 - a bowl of thin rice noodles in a fish broth with yuba (tofu skin), seaweed, chopped green onions, a side of kimchi and spicy sauce--as an add-on so we split this. It was light and simple, presented beautifully. By 2:15pm the restaurant had mostly cleared out. I appreciated that the staff was friendly and attentive by checking in occasionally though never rushed us. If there's one thing to add maybe that the price point is higher than your average casual lunch spot though within the general range of NYC sushi prices. The five hand roll set definitely feels like the way to go here. I didn't love the scallop one, but that's more just a personal preference.
