    Lobster Hand Roll
    Matt H.

Good experience! We stopped in for a quick dinner last night and had a good experience! While I wasnt OVERLY impressed with the handrolls as I found them a little flavorless the experience as a whole was great. I had the Toro, Scallop, Lobster and Crab hand rolls, all of which were very good just nothing to write home about. Our server was incredible, I wish I got his name, and overall ambiance was perfect for what we were looking for!

A very good value handroll sushi restaurant! I was slightly skeptical about this place since there are so many good sushi and omakase restaurants in New York. On top of that, we waited for like an hour to get in for dinner on a week night. Thankfully, it was worth it. Every roll that came out was so fresh and delightful. For $48, you will get 6 hand rolls with each being a decent size. I would say 1 hand roll equals 4 pieces of sushi. At the end of the dinner we were very content. Everyone will sit around the sushi bar so if you have a big party it might be tough to be seated. Going alone apparently can get you in pretty quick. This place is good but if you don't want to wait in line, I suggest making reservations at another sushi place since there is no shortage of them in NYC.

I was craving hand rolls and have heard so many great reviews on KazuNori so we went for dinner! We had to wait in line outside for about 15-20mins and then once we got inside it was about 10mins. The seating is different than most places where all the seating is at the sushi bar. Once we were seated we were given a menu and we chose the 5 hand roll and 6 hand roll set menu. I wish I had gotten the 6 hand roll set because they were all so amazingly good and I was already wanting more! The fish was high quality, rolls were made right in front of you and were given to you one by one. One thing I noticed was the rice was also great quality and so tasty! My favorite rolls were: toro, crab, lobster. A couple days later I was still craving this place so I got it to go. I would describe the inside as minimal, modern, dark lighting. Service was so good!

I've had this on my list for years but never really bothered to dine here. We were having dinner just a few blocks away and saved just enough room in my stomach to fit some hand rolls. We loved the place we went to months ago, near the city but was much more expensive so I wanted to compare it to this chain And... we'd gladly pay more next time; the rolls over there were definitely tastier and higher quality. This place was quite mediocre in comparison but it's really affordable which is why there was such a long line. And no tipping. What we did like. The atmosphere is dark and they're very efficient even though the wait was 30mins around 9pm on a Saturday. Our server was nice and the water they served was pretty good but the hand rolls were just okay to pretty mediocre. I ordered the 6 hand roll and the Nozie for the two of us. I liked the toro but it was the first roll. The rest seemed just so plain. Yes. It's made in front of you. But they're just slapping rice and fish on top. Nothing else really. I didn't like the lobster, I gave mine to L.. it tasted like a cheap lobster roll .. in comparison to the Maine lobster hand roll I had... crab roll. I had a whole piece of crab in a hand roll at the other spot. This was like crab salad. We did like the scallop hand roll. The best out of them.. the toro and scallop. We didn't like the akimo hand roll at all. L took one bite and left it on his plate. I managed to eat it even though I didn't want to and I love foie gras. This doesn't taste like it. I also like eel but I didn't finish it. And then for some reason I took another tiny taste of L's akimo before we left. No.. still bad. I had to get gelato nearby just to get the taste out of my mouth and fyi.. I don't care for sweets. I did like that the warm rice but I'd put a lil less vinegar... I make sushi rice at home all the time. I did think it overwhelmed the fish. The variety is so limited too. Whether you choose the 6 roll or the Nozie. It's almost the same thing. I'm glad I tried it still so I never have to come back.

I went on a Wednesday after work, arriving at about 6:30. I had to wait in line for about 40 minutes, but they are very efficient. It's all bar seating and you can see the chefs making the rolls. After sitting, we chose the 6 hand rolls set. Very yummy and good price but the fish to rice ratio is a bit off (too much rice). Service was excellent - very attentive and not too fast. They wait until everyone in your party is finished with their roll before they'll give you your next one.

KazuNori has amazing hand rolls for a good price! It's a similar concept to Sugarfish in SoCal and I believe this place is better! I went at 6:30PM on a Tuesday and only had to wait 15 minutes to be sat down. Seating is limited, but the wait isn't that bad, it moves pretty quickly. Although the ambiance is pretty dark and intimate, the setting really enhances the taste. I ordered the 6 hand roll course and enjoyed all 6 of them. The chefs make it after you finish your roll and they save the best one for last. The lobster was great, but I think the 4th hand roll which was the bay scallop was my favorite out of the 6! The water was good too, I'm picky with the water and they filter it really well. What I like about KazuNori is the balance, their rice is not overwhelming the flavor of any of the fishes. The restrooms were well-kept and cold! I enjoyed the service I received and this restaurant is one of the places I need to visit before leaving New York because I had a good first-time experience!

This one of the best hand roll places I have been. It's cozy and super efficient. Great for lunch or dinner, even if you are a solo diner. The hand rolls are perfectly crafted, with your choice of seafood and nice warm rice and toasted seaweed. In addition it's also a no tip establishment. Highly recommend! Go check it out yourself!

A classic- yummy fresh hand rolls that are always consistent! There's almost always a line, but they try to turn over seats rather quickly. I always get the 3 or 4 roll set, and sometimes add on a special app. Favorite rolls for me include the scallop (as always), and the toro. The ankimo appetizer I tried this last time was delicious and rich. Service is pretty standard, they move fast. No tipping establishment which is nice. Pro tip- use the unscented soap in the bathroom before eating and the scented soap after.

6 handroll combo is 35 dollars. Taste is not bad and portion is good. They smashed ingredients too much so the original texture is mostly lost. All 6 rolls taste very similar due to lost texture, marination, large rice portion, and strong flavor of the nori. Not a top tier place, but not bad for a quick lunch.

price - $37 including tax - NO TIP!!! food - 5/5 service - 5/5 ambiance - 5/5 SUCH AMAZING QUALITY FOOD!!!! all of the handrolls were filled with such flavor. the seaweed was crisp and salty. the rice was filled with vinegar. and the seafood within each handroll was SO FLAVORFULL!!! you can really tell the difference between all of the fish as some are more chewy while others are more soft. the service was amazing and the ambiance was wonderful! such a nice date nice spot

Great sushi hand rolls in NYC at an affordable price! Sushi bar seating (so best for solo - small group dining). I walked in just a few minutes after they opened on a rainy Saturday and they were already down to only single diner seating (but service is quick so if there's a small line, I think it'd move relatively quickly). Everything was fresh and I absolutely loved the scallop hand roll. I ordered the set of 5 rolls and enjoyed every one. After roll 2, I was getting full though, and after mentioning to one of the servers that I may have over ordered, she offered to bump me down to the 3-rolls set (but I wanted the lobster that was offered in the 5-roll set) so she recommended I do light rice on my remaining rolls which turned out to be perfect. Loved this spot for a casual but yummy lunch!

Ask the Community - KazuNori | NoMad

Is the fish in the hand rolls sliced whole or is it mashed or chopped?

    It's mashed/chopped

Do they have any rolls that are fully cooked or do they contain raw elements?

I wouldn't say that they have fully cooked rolls ,it's a mixed between half cooked and fully raw. Obviously the rice cooked.

If I want to come with my friends (party of 6) on a Tuesday/Wednesday evening, how are lines? Do we have a better shot at the 53rd st location?

Lines are long regardless. They don't have tables. They have a long sushi bar. Single seats.

    Are there gluten free options?

I think so! The rolls are just made of seaweed, seafood, and rice. But I would ask what they mix their rice with to make sure. And there's sashimi so that should be safe for gluten-free

What's the wait like on Thursday nights after 8pm? Do you serve sake?

They serve sake! They have a few choices. I went on a Thursday night around 7 and it wasn't bad.

How are the lines in the evenings on weekdays?

Hi, planning to go here next friday around peak hour (7/7:30) What's the best way to get a seat here? Need to get there an hour early?

    1-1.5 hour should be safe!

    Do they use brown rice?

    Don't think so

Do they allow substitutions for the set roll menu?

They generally discourage it, so I wouldn't count on it.

Do they have their liquor license yet?

    They do as of yesterday

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.
