Ordered for delivery; a chicken parm sandwich (panuzzo)... Just the outside bread came, no chicken, no sauce, nothing... an empty sandwich.... Literally empty...

10/10 recommend! Whether it's dining in or taking out (or ordering a surprise birthday treat for my dad while I was living on the opposite coast), our experience is always incredible. The team at Mario's makes us feel like family. And the food reminds us of our time in NYC - we've tried the chicken parmesan, spaghetti and meatballs, side salad, and of course, pizza. Everything is delicious! The pasta is the perfect texture, the meatballs homemade, the pizza is somehow thin and crispy while also being fully loaded and filling, and the salad veggies are crisp and fresh. When we are looking for a delicious, inviting experience, Mario's rises to the top of the list.

Good Italian food can be hard to find, especially with the many restaurants offering classic American-Italian favorites like Spaghetti w/ Meatballs or Lasagna. But for a very reasonable price, one can "finely dine" thanks to Mario's. I generally manage cooking in my household, but when my wife says "what did you plan for dinner?" I almost always recognize that as a request to get out. In this case we ordered in (shout out to DoorDash), and were pleasantly surprised at the incredible flavor of our selections. I had the Lasagna w/2 meatballs added on the side and it was hands down the best I've had in years! Rich, but not overwhelming, with just the right amount of meat, cheese and sauce to satisfy any appetite. My meal was followed by a luscious slice of carrot cake - a personal favorite. It too was outstanding! My wife chose the Spaghetti w/Meatballs, and a slice of FudgeCake, both of which she said were exceptional. Her only complaint was that the Spaghetti (and lasagna too) had a bit too much grease in them. It can be seen in the photos. Nothing a little paper towel can't manage but that won't remove the grease one can't see, and certainly not enough to have lost a star! Mario's Italian Grill just became a new haunt for me. However, next time I'll dine in. Wednesday night special is 2 pasta dinners, salad and dessert for $39.95.

I was looking for some Italian food to carry out for a Sunday/fun day afternoon in the park. Mario's Itallian grill was close, so I decided to give it a try. It was tucked away in a little strip plaza. The inside was rather small but clean and quaint. I ordered a chicken avocado salad and the lasagna for my husband. I called in my order and was told it would take 15 minutes. When I arrived after 15 minutes my food was ready. The chicken avocado salad had fresh sliced avocado, melted cheese, sweet onions, tomatoes, grilled chicken, and lettuce with your choice of dressing. The lettuce, tomatoes, onion and avocado were very fresh. The chicken seemed like it had been reheated a few times. It tasted ok, but would have been better with fresh grilled chicken and fresh grated cheese, vs. Melted cheese stuck to everything. The prices are very reasonable for the portion size offered. My salad was $12. The menu has all the classic Italian pasta dishes, pizza, salads, sandwiches, burgers, gyros and dessert. I would go back just to try more traditional Italian fare.

During a late night at my old office, preparing for another live event, we were there long enough to need to order dinner. We used Uber Eats to have Mario's delivered. We ordered cheesy bread, a Margarita pie, pepperoni pie, and one with bacon, mushrooms, and black olives. All pies were ordered with full toppings but two of them showed up looking like a half and half with only toppings on half and cheese only on the other side!! It was very odd. The Margarita was super garlicky. The pepperoni pizza was definitely my favorite as I don't eat mushrooms or olives, so I stayed away from that pizza. All of my co-workers and myself were satisfied, so Mario's is definitely A-OK in my book.

They have a bar to serve your favorite beverages. This is a great place for families or just hanging out with friends. I ordered a veggie pizza. This is New York style pizza and the slices are huge. The crust was thin and bubbly. The sauce was delicious and the veggies were generous. The pizza was topped with fresh basil. I highly recommend.

Usually we prefer table service, but honestly the bar is the way to go here since you get a front row seat to the pizza making. We ordered a half pepperoni and half sausage pizza. As I saw the beautiful pies coming out of the oven they were all getting dressed with fresh parm and basil and I was worried I didn't add that for ours, but after feverishly flaging down our server he reasured me that all the pizzas come with the special treatment at the end (unless otherwise noted). As I calmed my nerves I sipped on some delicious bottle of sweet tea. It was only the slightest bit sweet and so refreshing. Plus we ordered a salad as well. We were concerned about the size of the salad when we saw our neighbors come out, but our server let us know we could get a half Caesar if we preferred. The salad is a must have. I love how they just chop the ends off the romain and add the perfect amount of dressing, crunchy bread crumbs, and loads of cheese. The pizza came out shortly after and it was perfection. If you're looking for thin crust northern style pizza then you will definitely find it here. They also use top notch ingredients making this a pizza one to remember. Surprisingly I enjoyed the sausage even more than the pepperoni. We were stuffed after only eating half the pie so we boxed it up and took some cannoli to go. They did half regular and half strawberries that had local strawberries mixed into the ricotta! We enjoyed all of it so much that we ordered the same items for takeout only a week later. I definitely enjoyed dining in more than takeout, but both are a great option. The online ordering was super easy and even though it was slammed when I arrived, they had my pizza, salad, and cannoli ready to go at the window when I arrived.

We waited 15 minutes until my friend got back up and asked them about his slices, it seemed they had forgotten about it and then they quickly handed him his slices after apologizing for the long wait. Despite mine being great, his was not unfortunately. His looks like it was pulled out of the oven early and was still floppy. No crisp to it at all. That's what some people like but I don't believe it's the standard. Despite this, his slices tasted good, I mean, how can you mess up a pep slice. The prices were alright for the area, I think my slice was like almost $4 after tax. I'll probably be back because of the convenience of being able to just order and pay right away and then get a slice a few minutes later. I would overall recommend.

Pizza is also available by the slice, which is what I ended up getting. Originally, I wanted to order an 18-inch cheese pizza, but the waiter told me it would take about 30 minutes and recommended ordering by the slice instead. I tried the cheese pizza by the slice. The pizza had a classic New York-style feel, but my slice was a little dry and slightly burned. It was decent overall, just not the best pizza I've had. If you're looking for a quick carryout spot with New York-style pizza options, it may be worth trying, but I'm not sure it would be my first choice for pizza.

So it's entirely possible (and understandable) that I don't always get the best of what a place has to offer. That said, this was the worst pizza I've ever eaten. I was happy to see a place offer NY style pizza by the slice; you don't find that a lot in Charleston. Well, you won't find it here either. It was, generously, a home cook's first attempt at making pizza. There's something fundamentally off with the dough recipe, such that even a wood fired oven can't save it. The slices were overloaded with cheese. It was like eating wet cardboard. The meatballs were pretty good! The bartender was super pleasant and the space is attractive and welcoming. But they cannot make pizza. Normally I'm loathe to air out my business on Yelp like this; I prefer to communicate with the server if there's a problem with my food. But this wasn't an execution issue that could be fixed. A do-over would've produced the same result. Maybe, MAYBE they crush it with the neopolitan specialty pies. But I'll never know.
