Huachinango a la Veracruzana: Red Snapper Vera Cruz style
    Gary I.

Mariscos Corona is in a tiny stripmall with an equally tiny parking lot. Frequented by Latino families and Gringos doing mostly take out. Minimally decorated, but pictures of Revolucionarios, Francisco Pancho Villa (aka José Doroteo Arango Arámbula) and Emiliano Zapata as well as Cuautémoc Tlatoani, last Aztec Emperor. His courage in resisting the Spanish invasion, both during the conquest and after his capture, has made him a powerful symbol of Mexican national pride. 1) Mariscos Corona has a rare item not found in most Mexican menus: Huachinango a la Veracruzana which I had the pleasure to enjoy at the Restaurante in the Hotel Prendes in the port city of Vera Cruz on the Gulf of México. Whole red snapper, head, tail and all is lightly covered in a wheat based batter, then fried to a crisp so that even most of the bones are eaten like potato chips except head & spine. The white meat is moist, dense, but flakey with a touch of sweet, sea minerality. The frying technique was very competent with use of fresh oil so as not to leave stale flavours from other fried foods from before. The classic, associated Salsa was a light, fresh tomato sauce kissed with garlic, onions, sliced brined Spanish olives and sometimes capers. The Mariscos Corona version is battered & fried and then slathered with what seems to be heavy, thick, gooey tomato paste sautéed with slices of onions, red & green bellpeppers. Garnished with a lime to add a gastrique at one's discretion. However, Mariscos Corona did not follow the classic Salsa a la Veracruzana recipe. 1a) Very refreshing, chopped, green leaf lettuce topped with chopped tomatoes dressed with 1,000 Island dressing possibly due to concession to American influence. 1b) Dry, friable, short grain rice with bit of frozen veggie medley added for color. 1c) Frijoles de Pinto are creamy, thick with a bit of texture from other beans that are closer to smashed. Scattering of soft Queso Fresco for more richness. 1d) Three standard Tortillas de Maís 2) Excellent Salsa Fresca: Chopped fresh tomato, onion, cilantro, orégano Mexicano, pleasant acidity, earthy, garlicky with a satisfying scent of fermentation. Totopos/fried corn Tortilla chips are denser, plodding in texture. 3) Tried out the Culichi bottled Seafood Salsas from Sinaloa. a) Culichi Hot Seafood Salsa Habanero: like Worcester sauce with sweetness from a bit of brown sugar b) Culichi Negra: minty Worcestershire c) Culichi Hot Seafood salsa Chitilpin: Fermented fruit flavour with again a minty scent. In conclusion, I really couldn't taste a huge difference although a tangy, burnt sugar caramel flavour seemed prevalent. 4) Rather weak tasting Horchata made from rice, vanilla, sugar slaked my thirst on a very hot end of August late afternoon. Servers are efficient, and the younger lady was charmingly accommodating. Not exactly Huachinango a la Veracruzana, but not bad for a restaurant more leaning toward Jalisco. 4- stars

    Mojarra Frita

This has got to be my favorite Mariscos restaurant so far!!!!!! Everything was just a perfection with no complaints at all. I ordered the mojarra frita with fries and rice and salad (normally it's beans instead of the rice but they can always swap it for you). OMG the fish was so juicy and crispy at the same time and was so full of meat like I never had it before. It was just cooked to perfection. The service did not disappoint at all and they are literally willing to get you anything with a smile on their faces. The place itself is a little small. Can't imagine it on a busy weekend night where lots of people would dine in!!!!!!!! People would be on top of each other. But it just feels like one of the places you go in a small town in Mexico itself. I loved the place and even tho it's a bit drive from where I live. I'd definitely be visiting here over and over and over.

    Shrimp Taco

Stopped in for shrimp tacos. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The tacos were 10 out of 10, Amazing! Made just how I like! The restaurant was extremely clean and the food was quick. Will always support this taco spot when in the area! Plenty of options for pescatarians.

Food was great! I got the shrimp and oyster cocktail. Oysters didn't seem the freshest but the shrimp was really good. My girlfriend got the shrimp and mango ceviche and it was also very good! Service was friendly and very nice. The dining room is small but still has enough room for small parties. I want to come back and try more things off their menu. I was looking at everything coming out of the kitchen and it all looked delicious!

    Sea bass and shrimp

Cute little strip mall seafood spot. I read about the aguachiles and wanted to try it. A beautiful presentation and ample portion. It was tasty but not as spicy as I'm accustomed to. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. The light spice made it possible for me to enjoy the other flavors more and without drinking constant water to cool my mouth. I liked it. I also had the sea bass and garlic shrimp with a salad. The sea bass (not sure it was sea bass the way it was presented but whatever) was a little overcooked and too oily. The garlic flavoring was overcooked. I liked the shrimp but prefer no shells. The salad was ok. Overall, the meal was good. I'll return for a second try. The place was clean, staff was super friendly and it was a calm atmosphere.

    mango ceviche and pina colada
    Apolonia I.

I have always been indifferent about seafood but this place has changed my mind entirely. Seafood can be prepared in a way that excites and satisfies every taste bud. I had the mango ceviche which provided a sweet and savory taste. I also had their oysters with agua chiles which gave me a sour and salty kick - it did not taste overpowering. The ambiance is pretty and warm. The service is excellent. A lot of the staff are friendly and it's a place I'd recommend to anyone!

    Ceviche over priced

Over priced ! $18 dollars for this ? This place use to be good now it's just popular and over priced wow very upsetting !!

Tostada mixta con pulpo y pescado
    Josh M.

Lovely small business in Van Nuys featuring ceviche, aguachiles, and a whole lot more. I got the tostada mixta with octopus and fish. The seafood smelled and tasted fresh, was a perfect temperature, and had a nice balance of acidity and salinity on its own. The habanero salsa rounded out the flavor for me. Their friendly staff warmly greet patrons including families and workers on their lunch break. Plenty of space in their own parking lot or on the street. Very affordable price for decent quality raw seafood.

IG/TT @eatwkris Mexican seafood in definitely slept on and Mariscos corona on victory blvd in van nuys is my favorite spot that's got you covered on all types of ceviche and a unique oyster aguachile that is so refreshing and tasty. The star dish is this giant molcajete. It comes with a whole fried red snapper, octopus, bacon wrapped shrimp, and tons of head on shrimp. It's so good on its own or wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

    Tostada Corona

Mariscos Corona has really tasty, fresh seafood with great flavor in every bite. The ceviche and shrimp dishes are especially good, and the portions are generous. The service was great too our server Miriam was super friendly and welcoming. Definitely hits the spot if you're craving mariscos I am definitely coming back!

Any live music during the weekend?

yes there was a old guy singing with a guitar around 12pm - 1 pm on Sunday. It was pretty distracting and turned me off from eating inside, and I just ordered take out. I recommend try to avoid the musicians if you can.

There were six of us, including two young children, so we intentionally booked an early dinner. Even with a reservation, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. That wasn't a big deal. The bigger issue was the pace of the meal. We didn't receive our first appetizer until around 6:00 PM, and our entrees didn't arrive until about 6:20 PM. By then, the kids were definitely getting hungry. The good news is that the food was worth the wait. Between the six of us, we sampled everything from seafood and sushi to salads, tacos, vegetables, and desserts. Every dish was a hit. The birthday chocolate cake was a nice touch, and the bread pudding and butter cake were a great way to end the evening. Our server was friendly and did everything possible to make sure we had a good experience. As the restaurant filled up, though, it became obvious they simply didn't have enough staff to keep up with the crowd. We spent about two hours at dinner, and much of that time was waiting for food to arrive. Will we go back? Probably. Next time, though, I'll plan on a leisurely evening rather than a quick dinner, even with an early reservation. It's a restaurant with an overall speakeasy vibe BUT is not dark and foreboding. Rather, its high ceilings, well spaced out tables, and appropriately lit dining/bar space has a welcoming, cool vibe! And the music to fill the space before the live music was well, my kinda music - vibey 80s/90s hip hop. On top of that, the STAFF - the folks we met on a Monday (senior citizen hour) night were incredibly kind and attentive. We did stay through the first set of musicians that performed and it was great. Loud, but not loud enough that me and my friend couldn't still talk. Now onto the food. A nice surprise, considering this is a music joint! That bread was solid. The side portions decent - mushrooms and broccoli were fine. The steak was a generous size, cooked appropriately medium rare, and came with a unique side of bone marrow salsa. That was a nice, interesting touch. Was it the BEST food I've ever had? Not exactly, BUT it was the best food as part of a music joint, in the Valley. So the 5 star rating is really for the OVERALL experience.

**TL;DR: Great food, but terrible seating layout and "VIP" policy ruins the experience**…read more We booked a reservation well in advance and explicitly selected the main dining room, looking forward to the live music experience Verse is known for. Instead, we were placed to the right of the stage in a row of three 2-person tables (which they still consider the "main dining room"). For a venue centered around a performance, this layout makes zero sense: You only see the backs and profiles of the band, and the tables are positioned so that one person literally has their back to the stage the entire night. It felt like a second-class experience that completely missed the mark on value. Seeing three empty tables with proper views, we asked the hostess if we could move. We were told no because they were "completely booked and reserved for VIPs." Some time later, a manager came by to say that one of the VIPs hadn't showed up so a table was now available (the VIP by the way was an off-duty worker there). We didn't end up moving; the whole interaction left us with really mixed, sour feelings. It's incredibly frustrating to know regular paying customers who book ahead are treated as second-tier while prime tables sit empty for no-show "VIPs." Valet is $15 by the way. Due to the subpar experience and being stuck in a corner, I just couldn't in good conscience order the way I typically do, which usually includes multiple appetizers, several pasta and main dishes, dessert, and a great bottle of wine or champagne. Instead, we heavily scaled back our meal. As for what we did try, the kitchen has real highlights but a few misses. We started with the Peruvian scallops (5 to an order), served cold, ceviche-style, which had good flavor. For mains, the lobster tagliatelle was excellent. However, the mushroom linguini fell short; the pasta was far too tough and needed a couple more minutes of cooking, and it was oversaturated with a mornay sauce that completely overpowered the dish. To drink, the rosé was crisp and fresh. Overall, while some of the food is excellent, the poor floor layout and frustrating seating policies made this an extremely disappointing experience that wasn't worth the premium price.

As always, the staff brought their A-game, making sure we were able to hold spots as people in our party arrived in different vehicles, and making drinks quickly, exactly as requested. Our group variously ordered an array of martinis, shrimp cocktail, crab cocktail, steak tartare, a burger, French fries and cake. Yes, it WAS the start of a holiday! Of this wide-ranging order, my own items were a most excellent gin martini with blue cheese olives, served frosty cold and perfectly prepared, followed by a top notch shrimp cocktail that was fresh, cold, very flavorful, and steaming from dry ice. Still feeling peckish, I also ordered the steak tartare: again, a fresh and properly chopped mix of beef, egg and seasonings, served with garlic crostini. This was a very tasty, very "clean" expression of tartare, with the beef being allowed to shine rather than having too much creaminess masking its flavor. And so, once again, Blvd. Steak came through with a great meal and a great time in a room that somehow always feels both comfortable and celebratory. Happy 4th!!
