After attending Fiesta del Sol 2026 in Pilsen on a gorgeous Saturday, a close friend and myself…read morefound ourselves at Pilsen Yards for early dinner at about 6P based on a recommendation. The front door host was SUPER engaging and made us feel immediately welcome. The restaurant is trendy with a very hip vibe and the requisite interior decor to match. We were ushered by our waitress through a very nice indoor dining room to an outdoor dining area table for two. I noticed the outdoor dining also incorporated large sections suitable for big parties. Service here is very very attentive, starting with the fact that, I asked for a different type of chair finding the metal ones to be slightly confining. Our waitress, Caoimhe, was so hospitable in bringing a much more comfortable chair immediately. We ordered some alcohol drinks, a Pisco Punch and a beer. The Pisco was something new for myself and I found it refreshing. For light dinner, we ordered items to share. We both really liked the Piña Colada Ceviche. It was so delicious...the tuna pairing well with pineapple, jalapeño, coconut, cilantro and served with taro chips. Would definitely get it again! We also ordered three tacos. One al pastor, one shrimp and one barbacoa...with our favorites being the first two in that order. The barbacoa was dead last. Although it was tasty, I felt it needed a sauce to bring up what I felt was lacking in moisture. The corn tortillas of all the tacos were fine. We also asked for a side of rice and beans. Apparently they don't do refried beans so our waitress Caoimhe, suggested their black rice. Honestly, it was just ok and we found that a little salt & pepper made it a little better. I'd suggest the chef try cooking the black rice in a rich chicken stock. Should I return, I'd like to try the adobo glazed shrimp or the fire roasted salmon...they sound interesting. All in all, Pilsen Yards left me with a good impression of a new type of Mexican restaurant. The menu is definitely curated with the mindset of "less is more". This isn't your little neighborhood taqueria or old school Mexican restaurant with fifty different food options, refried beans and rice or chiles rellenos. What actually made the experience memorable...was the good service of the staff and if you're really "nice", the amicably amazing host may invite you to peek into their VIP "Alderman Room". Pilsen Yards is definitely worth a visit.

Instead of honoring the order, they sent us a handwritten note that said: "Sorry, the key lime pie & calamari doesn't come with the dinner anymore. " Seriously? That's not how restaurants work. You don't get to change what's included after the customer has already paid. If you run out of something, you call the customer. You offer a substitute or a refund. You don't simply decide it "doesn't come with the dinner anymore" and keep the customer's money. By that logic, why not write, "Sorry, the crab legs don't come with the dinner anymore," or "Sorry, the filet mignon doesn't come with it anymore"? Once someone has paid, you don't get to rewrite what they purchased. The food wasn't worth defending anyway. The crab was oversteamed, the quality was mediocre, and the service has always been indifferent. This experience was simply the last straw. There are far better seafood restaurants in Chicago that actually honor the orders they accept. We won't be back.

Plenty of street parking in the morning when we went for brunch at 1030am. There are inside and good size outdoor dining areas. The rotisserie duck was beautifully cooked and definitely the highlight of the meal even though the flavor was lacking. The other dishes (collard greens, sticky buns and Italian beef) were also about the same, they lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. The prices also felt a bit high for the overall experience. Service started off well but became noticeably slower midway through the meal. There was also no dessert menu that day, not sure if it's just that day or the norm for brunch. Overall, there were some good elements, but I expected more given the price point.

The staff was friendly and nice, but it took forever for us to get a drink order in on a not particularly busy day, the food coming out also took quite a bit of time, and generally the service was slightly awkward and weird. We sat on the "patio" which is actually more of a greenhouse, the music was too loud, which then made people talk loudly and the experience was slightly overwhelming. While the group of people I went with are big on dessert and wanted it, we wanted to leave more and ended up doing so and going somewhere else. Given that I went with someone who is a little more high-profile in Chicago, we also felt gawked at and had people walking by the table that were working just to get a look. Maybe we just came in on a off night, but it definitely killed the vibe.

El ideas is a Michelin 1 star restaurant in an industrial part of Chicago with a bus stop right in front of the restaurant. There was some street parking. The space sets the tone immediately. Small, intimate, covered in art and graffiti, good music humming through the room, open kitchen front and center. The concept is a dinner party in someone's very talented home and they commit to that vision completely. White tablecloths and stunning dinnerware sit comfortably alongside the laid back energy. It is BYOB including non alcoholic, which is an inclusive and thoughtful touch that more restaurants should take note of. Ten courses. Every single one intentional, innovative, and surprising. The first dish arrives with one instruction: lick the plate. No hands, no silverware. It is a perfect opening statement. Fine dining does not have to be stuffy or precious, it can be joyful and a little unhinged, and the food can still make you emotional. Mine did. Three dishes I will think about for a long time. A chicken marsala interpretation so layered with flavor that I genuinely felt something eating it. A Korean BBQ duck that was lean and bold, paired with mushroom to deliver the fatty richness the duck alone could not carry. And a banana rice pudding with a pandan marshmallow element on top that somehow coaxed out distinct and separate banana flavors I did not know existed. Every dish played with texture, hit multiple senses, and offered something genuinely new in each bite. The chefs are also your servers. They bring each course out themselves, deliver a little speech about what you are eating, engage with you throughout the meal, and pull you into the kitchen conversation naturally. It felt homey and accessible in a way that fine dining rarely achieves. Go in knowing little. Trust the kitchen completely. Walk out a different person. Worth every penny and then some.
