As in any doctor's office, there is sometimes a 20-30 minute wait, but seeing her is worth it. I'd say that 4 times out of 5, she's been able to take us for a same-day appointment. She is gentle and takes her time with each child. Dr. Amina is knowledgable with homeopathic medicine as well as Western medicine, and I appreciate that she tries natural remedies first before going the route of medication or antibiotics (which has worked each time!). She's also considerate of how many factors can affect my child when she's sick. For instance, she guessed that my daughter may have asthma when I brought her in for a lingering post-cold cough (her father has asthma, which I hadn't mentioned!). Her staff is friendly, and my girls love the colorful play waiting room, kid-appropriate TV programs playing in the background, child-friendly bathroom, and the cute themed exam rooms. The girls leave with Disney stickers (makes them smile!). And there hasn't been any tears yet. So thankful that such an accessible, caring and skilled pediatrician is only 12 minutes from our home!

The thing is that there are likely many causes to one thing or another, and the only thing they can do is to keep guessing until they find something that works. That's neither here nor there, and I hope all of you parents consider this. My son was born at Saddleback Memorial Hospital, where Dr. Brown did his circumcision. She did an excellent job and we were recommended to go to SOCPA by the postnatal nurses at the hospital. When asked which doctor the nurses at Saddleback Memorial recommended, quite a few (who are mothers themselves) said that Dr. Terrance Chu was an amazing pediatric doctor. We scheduled our appointment and met with him two days after my son was born. He was courteous, and "dumbed" down the information so that we, new-parents-running-on-little-sleep-with-no-idea-on-medical-jargon, could understand. We were very thankful for it. He gives us recommendations, he thoroughly inspects and looks over our little cub from head to toe. He knows what he's talking about and he knows about babies. He is an amazing pediatric doctor, and I truly recommend SOCPA. He's been my son's pediatrician for going on two years. Additionally, every doctor's visit they send us home with a paper discussing things that we should do to help our little man grow to be an amazing boy. They give pointers, tell us what should be done and what shouldn't, and also what is recommended. (It also makes us happy to know he's above or right on track too!) The offices are clean and sterile. The nurses are nice, and helpful. I believe the ratio is small when it comes to parents who don't vaccinate to the parents who do (like 1:20?) so that's another thing I love about this office. This is a great place to take your child, and it's located off of El Toro and Muirlands. Pretty easy to get to, and so it's convenient for us because we live three blocks away.

I took my son to see Dr. Monfared because he was sick. After examining him, she recommended a strep…read moretest, and my husband and I agreed. She later returned and told us that my son tested positive for strep. I then asked if my husband and I could also be tested, and she later told us that all three of us tested positive. However, we were not shown the test results. She prescribed antibiotics for my son. I asked if she could also prescribe antibiotics for my husband and me, but she said she could not, which I understood. After leaving, I decided to seek a second opinion the same day. Another doctor tested all three of us for strep, and all of the results came back negative. That doctor also showed us the actual test results. To be thorough, we also went to Hoag Urgent Care later that same day for another test, and those results also came back negative for strep. Both places told us that what my son has is most likely viral and does not require antibiotics. I want to give Dr. Monfared the benefit of the doubt, but this experience was very concerning. I'm not sure if there was an issue with the testing process, the test kit, or some other explanation. It was frightening because I was very close to giving my baby--who is under 18 months old--antibiotics that may not have been necessary. This situation was especially disappointing because I had hoped she could become my son's pediatrician. It is very easy to make appointments, often even on the same day, the office is close to us, and she appears to be easy to talk to.

What used to feel like a pediatric office now feels like a business focused on maximizing revenue. Getting an appointment is an exercise in frustration. Even reaching someone by phone is difficult, and when you do, you're often told there isn't any availability. The patient portal is another nightmare--I spent an hour just trying to regain access, which made communicating with the office even more difficult. The front office staff seem completely burned out. Every interaction feels transactional, and there always seems to be another fee. The final straw came when we switched to a new pediatrician. Our new provider attempted to retrieve my children's vaccination records through the California Immunization Registry, only to discover Coastal Kids hadn't entered them. Because of that oversight, I had to request the records directly from Coastal Kids--and they charged me $20 per child to send records to our new doctor's office. Charging families to correct the consequences of your own administrative failures is a terrible way to treat patients. If you're looking for a pediatric practice that is accessible, patient-focused, and organized, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. We left because the quality of the experience steadily declined, and unfortunately, our experience during the transfer out only confirmed that we made the right decision.

Again, the Newport office is disorganization, and Dr. Kellum was truly a disappointment. There was no follow-through, the doctors and office staff do not return your phone calls, when a referral is needed, they don't get back to you, which means you can't see a specialist, because the doctor's office doesn't get back to you with the referral. I am not one to leave negative reviews, but when it comes to your child's health and safety, I will spend the time to leave a review to share my experiences.
