I've been a client at MCS for a few years and was recently shocked by the ala cart pricing. I was completely unaware the salon had changed its policy and after my usual highlight my stylist went ahead and blew dry my hair without mentioning anything. I was shocked to learn this service was now $48 when I checked out. I didn't book this service (why would I?) and my stylist didn't say anything about the cost despite it being late afternoon on an average Wednesday. I appreciate and am happy to pay for the time and talent of my stylist. Three things... 1- I personally prefer a salon that sends me off with dry hair over one that boasts offering wine. 2- if I don't book a service, I should be asked before it's performed- especially if it's $50. 3- this salon doesn't offer the talent these policies dictate. The turnover since I started going there is ridiculous and while there may be one or two amazing stylists, this is not New York City and that's clear. read more

My first visit to Mark Christopher Salon was to get my hair done for Redress Raleigh 2013. Makenna put my hair up in a lovely updo. During my updo, Makenna was friendly and I noticed how lovely the salon was. A very professional, stylish, relaxing environment. They commented that they are big on social media so I started following them on Facebook and Instagram and I signed up for their email list serv. I really enjoyed my experience and had every intention of going back. In the meantime, I kept up with their before and after pictures on their social media and I always tried to win their giveaways. One day, I received an email offering 20% off on a hair color and cut. I always love a good deal so I took advantage of the 20% off and finally made an appointment. I requested Makenna and she did a lovely job!!! I described what it was that I was looking for and she did what I wanted and more. Side note: While I was there for my appointment, I ran into a coworker. We were talking about our company's holiday party coming up that weekend and I mentioned that I was gathering giftcards to give to the employees. One of the owners overheard me and he generously offered to provide 2 $25 giftcards to the salon. How awesome! Another side note: I love how you can book an appointment online. I had my first appointment here last week with Makenna and it was fabulous. The salon is beautiful, clean, and elegant. I was immediately greeted when I walked in, offered a drink, and Makenna was ready for me. I wasn't sure exactly how I wanted my hair cut, but she took the few things I did express and knew exactly what to do. I was out in less than an hour with an fresh new cut and I got a 10% discount because it was my birthday. I also left with a list of the best bars and restaurants in Raleigh. This was my second time at Mark Christopher salon. The space itself is very modern and relaxed at the same time. Every single one of the staff members are always so nice and welcoming. You can tell they want you to be as comfortable as possible. The complimentary glass of wine (or beverage of your choice) is also a nice plus! The only person there I'll allow to touch my hair is Sarah. My first time I walked in with shoulder length hair that hadn't been cut in a year, I showed her a picture of the cut I wanted and she did it perfectly. When I went back for my trim, the cut was flawless. It's been over 15 years since I've trusted someone enough to cut my hair. Sarah is definitely the one for my precious locks. She listens to what I have to say, gives excellent advice, and is fun to talk to. If you haven't been already, what's stopping you? You have no idea what you're missing out on. read more

I requested NBR extensions with the owner and the salon. I came in to get them installed and questioned the hair method being NBR. They were installed very quickly and there was no string. She told me it was NBR. After my first move up, I came home and noticed that the bottom row was sagging significantly. It felt like they were falling out and I had just gotten home from the appointment. Grace told me "it needs to be like that to prevent your scalp from damage". one Bead fell out then the bottom piece started falling out more. I went to another salon to see what was going on. They said that it was NOT NBR. The salon will not refund me the coat of the wrong hair (i can't salvage it because it is not NBR hair) and the cost of service. It totals $715.00 not including the cost I had to pay to have this mess removed. So now I have to go to small claims court to get my money back. I'm beyond impressed with the professionalism of this salon. I've been going there for years and last week had my first mediocre experience. When I got my survey in my email about my appointment, i answered it honestly. I had had better service and cuts there before so I let them know. Within a couple hours the owner had called me to apologized and offered to have Christopher cut my hair next time for free. He thanked me for my honesty. As someone who has always had unruly, curly hair, getting a good cut has always been a real challenge- and one I've never succeeded at. As I've gotten older, my hair has calmed down, but my fear of horrible cuts remains.... until Mark Christopher Salon. I chose the salon and the stylist Makenna solely based on numerous positive reviews and I was not disappointed. I went to the appointment with my hair clean and with no product in it, so she could see the issues. She spent several minutes running he fingers through my hair and considering different options. I suggested that maybe I should go shorter- she disagreed and told me I just needed layers and this and that. Makenna cut beautiful layers into my hair and it has never been more bouncy and healthy. Then she blew it out. For a curly haired girl this is kind of a big deal, and for me, I had never had a blowout. When she spun my chair back around I nearly fell out of it. I could not believe how gorgeous my hair looked. She said she just wanted to show me my hair's potential. If you are looking for a fantastic stylist, one who will take time and really asses your hair, Makenna is the one for you. Recent transplant from San Francisco bay needing a trendy hair salon; and wow did Mark Christopher Salon deliver. My stylist was Mint, who gave me a cut and color. I know I could say I loved it, but the real compliment comes from going out that night and having someone walk up to me and say, "I love your hair!" Mint is not just 'a good stylist'. She is an artistic visionary who has great personality to boot. the salon itself is fun and relaxed and is easy to access with plentiful parking. I highly recommend this place. read more

I asked for a balayage and got highlights. The stylist was sweet and tried her best but as seen in the photos, I did not get what I received. The problem is not even the blonde, the problem is I wanted a balayage that transitioned from darker roots to lighter ends but obviously I got highlights with no transition or gradient effect. I called to make another appointment to see what we could do (pay for extra coloring, book more sessions, etc) even though I had already paid over $300 but then I received a call saying my appointment was canceled because they won't honor a "redo". I called the front desk to rebook the appointment but they transferred me to Kim who was extremely rude. I tried to explain the situation but she kept interrupting me, insinuated I did not want to pay for the service or didn't have the means to pay for it (which I already paid over $300 for), began to yell at me, verbally attacked me, and hung up on me mid-conversation. I called again but she declined my call so I called from a different number and when she picked up I explained it was very rude and disrespectful and that I wished to speak to the boss/owner to which she replied "I AM THE BOSS" but said she would have the boss contact me and then proceeded to hang up on me mid-conversation once again. I was very shocked and hurt by the disrespect shown towards me. Its a shame to see how a hospital employee working the frontline of this pandemic was treated. Oh. My. God. The best hair salon I have ever been to. I started out with a complete disaster on my head. A previous hair dresser left my hair blue when I wanted it to be silver, and I absolutely hated my hair. I think Brandon might literally be a magician, because in two trips he turned my hair from blue to silver, the perfect color I wanted it. Service here is immaculate, very clean, nice atmosphere, and the hairdressers are all very friendly and willing to work with you. I followed my stylist Grace here and have fallen head over heels for the upscale but relaxing environment, incredibly friendly and helpful staff, and amazing products. I swear this place is heaven on earth! I moved to Raleigh from NYC a few months ago and so I've been to my fair share of 'fancy pants' salons in the city and none of them can even come close to this little gem! I feel like I have always bounced around from hair stylist to hair stylist for most of my life... being too afraid to commit to one stylist and always looking for some place better. However, I can proudly say that I am now in a monogamous relationship with MC Salon. This place just couldn't be better. My hair stylist Brandon not only has serious skills with both color and cut, but he also has an amazing personality that makes anyone in his chair feel welcome. Each time I arrive at the salon, I am promptly greeted and offered a beverage of choice. Then, Brandon and I chat about what I am envisioning for my cut and color. He's always offering me suggestions and really takes an interest in crafting a look that he's confident I can rock. I also love the fact that after he's finished with my color and cut, he asks me how I would like to style my hair for that day. I don't know about you gals, but I am always trying to figure out how to get that 'just left the salon' blowout look and Brandon breaks it down step by step so I can re-create (or at least come close to recreating) the style at home. I was charged more than half of the price of the haircut for cancelling less than 24 hours in advance - even though they were closed for the two days before my haircut, so it would have been impossible to cancel. I understand a small cancellation fee, but this fee of nearly $30 is outrageous, especially since I had only made the appointment the last day that they were open before the day of the appointment itself, so this was obviously an empty time-slot that was not likely to be filled anyway. read more

Everything you want in a salon. I've been looking for a hair salon for awhile now and have tried several "top rated" downtown places but have always left a little underwhelmed. After contacting a few new places for an appointment, Mark Christopher Salon is the only one that answered, was pleasant and able to book an appointment for a haircut that same week (next day actually). Parking was super easy and stress-free. The receptionist was friendly and attentive. I sat for maybe a minute before my stylist, Catie, introduced herself and called me back to get started. Catie was friendly, easy to talk to and I felt like she really understood what I wanted. Most importantly, Catie did an amazing job on cutting and styling my hair! She was able to correct an uneven cut and give me the fun style I've been wanting. I love my hair and I honestly can't remember the last time I said that. read more

I'm clearly in the minority here. I loved my stylist, and was pleased with my cut and color, but the way the management treats it's customers is atrocious. I have therefore left a talented stylist, and the stylist has left as well, and now have my hair done elsewhere. I've also seen quite a few stylists leave the salon in a fairly short period of time. I do not see or hear any dissatisfaction amongst the employees but I do see that there is a high rate of turnover. I choose a salon for quality first. They have achieved that. But I will not spend my money in a place where I am treated rudely and with disrespect. read more

Terrible experience! Googled the salon and thought based on reviews they know what they do - apparently not. I have blonde hair and made sure the hairdresser understood that i do not want any yellow in my hair. Outcome is light yellow + my hair is dry after the haircolour. Seems that we are back in the days of cheap haircolours. Will definitely not go back there. My hair looks unnaturally yellow and it will take quite a lot of time now to fix whats done. read more

Since moving from Florida I've yet to find "the" salon until walking into Mark Christopher Salon. My first visit was for a cut with Mark...AMAZING cut & today I was scheduled for a toner with Sarah. My previous stylist did a number on my color & I was hoping the toner would hold me over until I gave my hair a reprieve & could come back for highlights. Sarah took one look & realized it wouldn't do much so she cleared her day to fix my hair. I walked out a new person! No more gold brassy tones, just a beautiful natural wheat blonde. Just found this gem of a salon and stylist Charles!! Got a same-day appt (on a Tues) for cut AND color and I don't think I've ever had a better cut OR color :) Charles took my raggedy old DIY-brassed-out color and restored it to a beautiful, rich brown that is so shiny and luxe. I have long, thick hair that I rarely get professionally styled and Charles remedied all of that! He listened, understood that I'm a busy working mom of 3, and don't have time to give myself a blow-out every AM. He repaired my bad bangs, took out all the dead weight of my hair, and basically made me feel like a star! ;)After two years of trial and a lot of error with other salons in the area, I've found my new haircut home!! read more

I have been here twice and have loved both experiences! Brandon is a great stylist and I felt like he really listened to what I was picturing. He executed my haircut perfectly and the finished product looked exactly as I imagined in my head! (This never happens!) I have very fine hair and I loved the products he used in my hair; they did not feel heavy or look greasy. I was going to buy one of the products he used, but unfortunately, the salon was sold out. I already scheduled my next appointment so hopefully they will have it back in by then! This is a real deal salon and I feel the prices are very fair for what you get for a hair cut (nice scalp massage, wash, cut, style). I have not had any color services so I can't comment on that. I love Makenna and I look forward to seeing the staff at Mark Christopher every five weeks when I go! Makenna has taken me from brown to blonde (and back again) - from short to long (and back again). She's incredibly talented. If you have to sit in someone's chair for 2 1/2 hours you want her... she's got such a great personality. The salon reached out and offered me a free haircut. I haven't taken them up on it yet but appreciated the gesture. Since I posted my earlier review, my husband also started getting his haircut at Mark Christoper. He's been happy with his haircuts and can be picky. Last time he went in for a haircut he unknowingly sat in spilled bleach from another customer and ruined his shorts. He contacted to the salon after and they immediately sent him a check for the cost of the shorts. I think spilled bleach is unfortunate mishap that can happen anywhere, so I don't hold that against the salon. Given that the salon has been highly responsive to customer feedback on more than one occasion, I'm revising my earlier rating. read more
