I would like to inform Dr Drakos of the treatment my husband and myself were given before even being seen. By his " assistant " LAURA RICHARDS. I have a recorded phone call of this woman going against hippa law, advising my husband that he is not suitable to come to the best country in the hospital due to her taking personal offense to me asking her to please assist us in getting his x rays uploaded, as we had them in email and simply wanted to get them over to the DR before his telehealth appointment. Just because you personally do not like a patient , you are in no right to tell a patient they should not be seen by one of the best doctors in the country. She also hung up on me and my husband three times. HOW UNPROFESSIONAL !!!!!! I think for a doctor of such credentials he should be aware of this treatment LAURA RICHARDS provides to the patients. I also think he should hear this call and how she treated us. I think she should not be in the position she is in if she allows her " personal feelings" to get in the way of a patients livelihood and health as well as overall well being. My husband has severe foot issues and to be spoken to this way and treated this way is of no right of this lady who is clearly miserable in her position. No woman with this type of attitude should be representing this doctor. No patient deserves to be treated in such a manner. You leave your personal feelings out of the matter when you are in this field and it is your duty to service the patient and help them, not leave them to dry the day before their appointment and give them a 1800 number to call. I ask that the doctor contact my husband immedietley . All we want is your office to contact the radiologist to obtain the x rays since we are unable to email them to you since the portal has provided problem after problem.Once a patient tries their hardest to obtain these x rays to your office, call after call, attempt after attempt, there is no reason your office cannot go the extra mile to call the radiology and help us obtain this for you before the appointment. The staff needs to be re trained on customer service and the rights of a patient. In the medical field you dont involve personnel, you do not have a right to tell the patient they should not be seen there, and you certainly do not argue with patients or hang up on them. 12/22/18 I would never recommend anyone see him! I have a complicated case that requires several opinions before making a decision. But, even if I had a simple sprained ankle or bunion, I still wouldn't see him. I was referred to him by my physician also within the HSS group and was able to see him within the week. Scheduling wasn't an issue at all. But, the issue lies in several facets of his practice. 1. He was so quick to diagnose my pain as "just nerve pain". It was about five minutes he held my foot looked at it and asked me to walk and magically knew without any other testing that it was "just nerve pain". 2. He has a prescription pad with pre-printed compound creams with 5 different combinations for patients "with nerve issues". 3 of which include Ketamine. 3. It took months of fighting with his office and staff to get a cream that I could use and still remain mentally competent. I called several times saying, "I have to drive every day to commute and I ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT take these specific meds." It's as if he and his staff don't understand people who live outside of Manhattan don't have the option of taking public transportation door to door, making driving a necessity. 4. The fact he was so quick to say it was entirely "nerve pain" forced me to see another opinion - WASTING MY TIME! And in that time it took to get another opinion and revisit my surgeon, my surgeon had changed his mind. I don't know if it's because he really trusts his opinion or what. But subsequently, I have spent months in pain trying to get relief and help. I'm young and I know my issue is complicated. No one should have to be put on mind-altering drugs like ketamine while in college. I wonder what patients around my age think when given his diagnosis of nerve pain. How is anyone supposed to deal with excruciating pain all the time for the rest of their lives? He's part of the system creating drug seekers because of unbearable pain being treated with creams containing these muscle relaxants barely touching the pain. I wouldn't even refer my worst enemy to this compound cream pushing disgrace of a physician. My suggestion: Don't waste your time and money, find another physician with better reviews. UPDATE 7/1/2020 Thank you Dr. Drako's for the inappropriate response and quick misdiagnosis of my pain. I was so severely misdiagnosed by him in October 2018. To that, I must say, thank you for misdiagnosing me, which lead me to find the caring physician I worked with who believed my pain and didn't jump to conclusions saying it was "just nerve pain". The surgeon I consulted with after, recommended, and performed surgery (after recommending other treatments that I already tried with no success) to retighten ligaments (which correlated to where I felt pain), clean scar tissue build-up, and debulk muscle and had 3 metal stitches implanted (for the muscle that was debulked). This surgery was performed in May 2019. I would suggest also looking outside of the HSS network. When I did, I found a doctor that actually believed my pain and created a plan to help my pain rather than just pushing for compounded creams with ketamine. read more

Dr. Drakos recently repaired my son's ruptured Achilles' tendon. . We could not have chosen a better physician to repair the rupture. My son ruptured his Achilles' tendon over Memorial Day weekend. I called Dr. Drakos office first thing Tuesday morning and the staff was amazing. They scheduled an appointment for us the following day. When we arrived for the appointment, Dr, Drakos and his staff treated my son with the utmost dignity and respect. Dr, Drakos scheduled my son for surgery the following day. Dr. Drakos is the superstar of the orthopedic surgery and medicine. He originally operated on my infected achillies tendon and it was great success. Prior to the achillies surgery I was an international level athlete (triple jumper) and I am happy to share that I am fully recovered and back to a high level performance in sports (currently pursuing professional beach volleyball career). I went back to Dr. Drakos with the injuries that followed, broken and disclocated toe and staph infection in my knee that was successfully cleaned out and now healed. Dr. Drakos is an outstanding surgeon with excellent bedside manners. I have been an Operating Room nurse for a long time and have worked with numerous orthopedic surgeons. However, when I needed to fix my foot, I knew instantly that my surgeon was going to be Dr. Drakos. He is highly skilled, detail oriented with an excellent sterile technique. These are qualities that are very important in wound healing and successful surgical outcome. Just called to try to make an appt after being referred by another doctor within the HSS system. The beyond rude receptionist decided (without any medical knowledge of my issue) that Dr Drakos would not take on my case and hung up on me mid-sentence. I believe her name was Victoria? When I called back to confirm her name, so I could let the referring doctor's office know that she decided I was not eligible to be a patient, she said "I'm not continuing this conversation" and hung up the phone. Dr. Drakos, if you are reading your reviews you really should train this woman how to treat patients and let her know she is not a doctor and shouldn't be deciding what patients you will and will not see. I am a patient of Dr Drakos and Nicole PA who works with Dr Drakos. He is kind and extremely patient. He takes his time and is open to answering questions. Nicole responded to any calls and questions I had about my surgery with expertise ans is very knowledgeable. Dr. Drakos is the best in his speciality. I had a full recovery and now a few years later I'm back for another procedure. Laura, surgical coordinator who works on Dr Drakos' team is helpful and knowledgeable. She set me up for my procedure and patiently went through all instructions. She too is prompt with returning phone calls. Like any doctors office I understand that I might have to wait while they take care of other patients but I have the doctors full attention when I see him. I have gone to both his NYC and Long Island office and recommend either. I'm a RN and have seen what good care and not such good care looks like. I had numerous metatarsal fractures and tore my lisfranc ligament. For those who are unaware tearing your lisfranc is an incredibly scary experience. It's a complicated tear and Dr Drakos did an incredible job. I was diagnosed and literally the next day was in the surgery room. While the recovery is long I felt completely comfortable with Dr Drakos and his staff. I'm happy to note that I am back to being myself and being able to work out. I was experiencing chronic pain in my left ankle which made my life worse by the day. Being a New Yorker, I am constantly on my feet and it was becoming unbearable. I made an appointment to go see Dr. Drakos who was highly recommended due to his knowledge and surgical expertise of the ankle and foot. After evaluating my physical condition and reviewing my diagnostic tests, Dr. Drakos explained in detail his proposed plan of treatment. Given the nature of my injury, it made perfect sense to have surgery to be pain-free and gain back my active lifestyle. Dr. Drakos explained my plan of care which included (1) preparation prior to surgery (2) instructions during recovery particularly the first two weeks (3) follow up visits including recommendation for physical therapy rehabilitation. Since my surgery, I've stopped taking the pain medications and have slowly gained back my mobility. It has only been 6 weeks since my operation and I have already started to see significant change in my physical well being. I am so happy and pleased with Dr. Drakos and his amazing team of medical professionals who provided me the best patient care. I will start my review by saying that I booked an appointment on line and his office confirmed it about a week before. Then a day before my appointment I received a call from the office scheduler and was informed that she was going to move my appointment to an earlier time of day....not asking if I would be to arrive earlier in the day (work a full time job during the week).Better than that, the reason my appointment had to be pushed up is because the doctor had no other appointments between 1pm and 4 pm so, it would be taking up his time waiting for me. I was suppose to be considerate of his time but, my time is apparently not as important. In the end I was in enough pain that I used vacation time to make the appointment for 1pm. The biggest slap in the face with this whole process was while filling out the questionnaire for the appointment there was a request for my willingness to take weight bearing x-rays. My impression of this was to get a proper diagnosis of my ankle passing was to perform weight bearing x-rays. However to my complete and utter shock not only were the x-rays not covered under my insurance, the use of the X-ray machine and reading of the x-rays were not covered and I received a bill of 2000 dollars from HSS. There was no information provided to me that these X-rays are neither necessary or covered under my insurance. These X-rays are a cash grab for the hospital perpetrated by the doctor. Don't be fooled and decline the BS weight bearing x-rays. Finally after receiving my diagnosis I attempted to call his office and get some direction on who they would recommend in my area for PT and for orthosis. I called and left messages but no one ever responded, I really feel like this whole process was about money and not about patient care. read more

Dr Dracos misdiagnosed my problem from the start, which led me to have an expensive, painful, unnecessary surgery from which I spent almost a year recovering. Eventually another surgeon identified the true cause of my ankle pain and now I likely need to have another surgery to fix the actual problem. My entire experience with Dr Dracos was appalling- when my ankle did not improve post-surgery he just started making up reasons why it wasn't better. read more

Dr. Drakos operated on my wife's right foot last September. It was a complex surgery of two dislocated metatarsal bones and a bunion reduction. The first month were tough, sitting with her foot up, using a walker, being at the mercy of others to help her. I can say now, 15 weeks later that the operation was a success. Reached out to Mark Drakos as I wanted second opinion on my plantar fasciitis, ankle and Achilles issues. I had plantar fasciotomy back in July which was a successful surgery, however, I fell into the 10 percentile where it was not effective. When I called, Victoria was nice enough to see if he would take me on since I was seen by another doctor already. She called me back the next day and said he said that he didn't want to see me, but I could see his PA and do radio electronic therapy which is NOT covered by insurance. Reason being is because it's still in its experimental stages and not proven to be effective or safe... yet! The reason I know is because my doctor wanted to do this along with my surgery and the insurance denied it and explained why. Anyways, since doctor Drakos does not have the moral ethics to help someone out who's been seen by another doctor is the reason for my low rating. I'm sure if it was one of his friends or family he'd see them right away, however, it doesn't seem that he cares about what he signed up to do and that is to help the pubic/citizens with their health, issues and overall wellbeing. This is effecting my day-to-day life and how I live. But Dr. Drakos doesn't care because he seems to be pretty selfish and again his practice ethics are not what one should expect. read more

I'll start off by saying that this is more of a review of attempting to obtain an appointment with this doctor, not the doctor's medical skills as I never even met him. I was referred to this doctor by my physical therapist office. This is after battling severe foot pain and not finding a doctor that would help me for many years. I previously trusted a doctor that performed three foot surgeries and I am now in worse off condition. I stopped looking for a doctor because I became a little "gun shy" about the whole experience but I know there is something wrong with my foot and ankle and I can't go on like this. The PT was extremely positive in recommending Dr. Drakos to me and being that he also had an office on Long Island, I took the leap of faith and called. To my surprise the doctor will not see me. The woman that answered the phone did an intake- asking me questions about dates of surgeries but I wasn't even asked how I broke my foot in the first place-I never had the opportunity to explain how it hurts-where it hurts. I explained what other doctors have told me but like I said, I have little faith in what their diagnosis is, which is why I was seeking another opinion. They asked for no films or MRI and ct scan reports. I was told I would receive a call back by the end of the day or the next day since he was in surgery. I never received a call back. Five days later I called back. I then received a call to tell me that the doctor reviewed my information (I'm still unclear what he read) and that he didn't treat my condition. ???? When I inquired what exactly is the condition he is referring to, the woman didn't know. She then said, "well you've had three surgeries......". Yes, I know. I was then given a few other colleagues names. When I questioned again, because I was so puzzled, about what exactly did the doctor review because I really wanted to explain what exactly is wrong with my foot. Maybe I didn't make myself clear the first time or perhaps the information wasn't translated correctly, I was abruptly told to hold on, as if my questions about my health were bothering her. Then, of course, we were disconnected. I was called back by another woman that was very nice and reiterated what the first woman said, but in a more empathetic tone. But again- I got no answer as to why he won't see me. So when my husband asks me why, I can only say he doesn't treat my condition- lol Which, for four years we've been puzzled as to what my condition really is. So- be forewarned- if you a referred to this doctor. Don't hold your breathe for an appointment, Don't have faith that all the conditions he says he treats on his webpage is correct because I feel many of these pains. Perhaps he doesn't treat patients that have had surgeries. In my case each surgery was on a different part of the foot-for different things. While I appreciate not wasting my time going to see him, I shouldn't have been told by his staff that is would be a waste of his time to see me, as I was by the first woman. "he reviews your information so it doesn't waste your time or waste his." Can you imagine? How is that supposed to make me feel? It took some strength for me to even make this appointment in the first place. sigh......... I never write reviews and I certainly don't like to speak ill of anyone-whether it's a business or otherwise. But I hope this review helps someone. I wish I knew this going in.
