It was easy to fill out the application for insurance, the quote was fast and affordable, I even added on cancellation insurance for very cheap and it saved us over $2,000 after we had to cancel our original ceremony. You're not going to believe it, but my nightmare with motorcycle insurance continues. After the ordeal with State Farm and Geico (see those reviews), I finally found an insurer that will cover scooters in the District. Signed up my Vespa ET4 in September; added the LX150 in March; and, having finally sold the ET4, called them to drop it from the policy. The customer service rep tells me that it won't be necessary, as my entire policy was cancelled back in March when they received no payment for the increase in the premium with the addition of second scooter. They claim to have sent a notice, which, of course, I never received. Their web site ends with ". . . insuranceisfun.com." My ass. First of all, I did pay the difference for the LX150. (Actually, to be perfectly honest, I'm not 100% certain, but I'm going through my records to be sure.) Second, assuming that I didn't, I did pay for the ET4. Apparently, their policy (no pun intended) is that a single policy that covers more than one vehicle is cancelled in its entirety when payment is not made in full. Fine, whatever. But no prorated amount is refunded. Not fine. I explained that this would lead to the ridiculous result of having an entire policy terminated when the payment is short by $1.00, and that simple arithmetic that even I understand demonstrates that they should refund half of what I paid for the ET4. When the rep said she can't do anything about it, I asked to speak with the President or CEO (I aim high). A supervisor is supposed to call me back today (I'll settle for less). I'll update this review accordingly or delete it, if appropriate. Two stars for now only because they haven't quite finished proving to me that they suck. read more

Do yourself a favor and steer clear. I used them for workers comp insurance for the last several years, this year they reclassified us and raised our rates by 50%. The surprise was they didn't do it until my renewal date! This left us no time to shop for alternatives and then hit us with an early cancellation penalty. Then they started to email us for a "past due balance", the funny thing is we were on autopay. How can we be late when they are responsible for billing? All in all, a super shady insurance company. Find someone else, there are many other alternatives. Employers seems to be better so far. read more

I recently had a company install an appliance, during it they gouged our hardwood floors. I filed a claim and Evanston Insurance (part of Markel) representative advised that the General Liability policy excluded all property damage claims unless the damage occurred on their insured's premise. This was supposedly a General Liability policy issued to a company who deliver and install appliances as their business. In my opinion it's a scam company. read more

Absolutely unprofessional and deceiving business practices. Dealt with Markel for our workers comp coverage. Canceled us due to an audit not being completed. Stated they would reinstate us once we completed audit. Paid my accountant to organize 2 years of requested info for Markel. Then they chose not to reinstate us, but rather to bill us for over $3,000 that they stated the audit showed we owed. No explanation of how we were short or why that shortage was on us since we did not set up any numbers, our insurance agent did. Would not work w us when we were willing to work out some type of payments, sent us to collections. read more

Run from this insurance company! They say they offer airboat insurance, but really they take your money. You have to sign their release that describes ocean waters (tides, water flow, waves, ship's wakes) In the middle of the non-navigable Everglades. What kind of company forces you to sign a release that just confuses your clients as to what area they are going to. Let's be clear. NON-NAVIGABLE sawgrass prairie marl. And if you try to tell the underwriter this contract doesn't even make sense of the boundary areas you want coverage in, they tell you, "you are nothing more than a drop of water in the ocean." i found this company to be terrible in terms of pricing. they charge low upfront costs and then at the end they create an additional balance owed. we had workers comp insurance through them. when the policy ended, they told us we owed an additional $1500 because i was part owner of the company but didnt work in the company. the representative was rude. will never use them again and would not recommend. read more

My company has used Markel Specialty Commercial for workman's comp over 10 years. My previous office help did not realize the audit charges had been wrong. We have always paid. During covid lost work and employees. Cancelled my ADP. Hired a new office girl who realized Markel had been over charging us for years and 2 audits a year? Now Markel charging over $4000 for workman's comp for employees we do not have. We have filled out the audit forms and have fought previous charges. Now they want over $5000 for 2021 - 2022 year, which we already paid audit charges and made payments on time. Also demanding payment over $4000 for this year o f2022-2023. This policy is good until 04/2023?? They are stating may conduct the Better Business Bureau on us and other government agencies. They e-mail states they do not process payments on expired or cancelled accounts - but just tired to charge the $4000 on our bank account!! We are looking for a new company. Markel states it will be difficult for us due to owing them money$$ read more

We have used them for a number of years and faxed in our audit in a timely fashion. The company claimed we did not send in the audit and billed us a penalty of $1604.00. My advise is stay away they are very shady. read more

Had a motorcycle insurance with Markel for a year. Renewal came this year and I was shocked, premium went up whopping 27%, no claims, accidents or tickets, same bike and everything else. If I could rate a -100 I would. I am a first time horse owner and purchased a mortality policy from Markel. In addition to the agent who sold me the policy giving me bad information on how to apply, the claims adjuster basically accused me of fraud and animal abuse when I had to euthanize her. The worst moment imaginable, and I'm treated like a criminal. I was honest with the agent and with the adjuster and can't believe the way I have been treated. I will never, EVER insure any of my horses with Markel and I will tell everyone I know to watch out for the way they treat their clients. read more

Pay the extra money and go with a reputable company, it's worth it in the end if something actually happens. My company was a client of theirs for years and many times I expressed frustration that I am paying more than other companies with more employees and higher payrolls. Should have ditched them years ago. When I finally did, they sent me an audit and a subsequent bill for around $700. When paperwork was submitted showing lower payroll and less driving range than previous year they still billed me and tacked on a late fee. I truly believe this company deserves a class action lawsuit regarding overcharging for Workers Comp Insurance (certainly for businesses like mine with only one or a few employees) as well as the potential fraudulent audit process and subsequent billing. I own a 2005 Sea Ray boat and I have an insurance policy through the issuing company Markel American Insurance Company. About two months ago, saltwater got into the engine in the boat and caused it to seize up and stop functioning. The main reason that I got insurance through this company is because they advertise that their policy does not have mechanical breakdown exclusion. Even on the website, there is an example: "Mechanical Breakdown Inboard cylinder engine. Evidence of water intrusion in 2 cylinders. This engine is raw-water cooled. Saltwater circulating through the engine caused corrosion creating holes in the valve guide bores. A close up below of the corrosion: If your policy excludes machinery breakdown chances are you could be paying for a new engine out of your own pocket. Unlike most, our policy does not have mechanical breakdown exclusion. " At this point, the insurance company has sent us a formal letter denying our claim and refusing to pay anything. They first tried to say that the damage was caused by faulty manifolds and riser and that they need to be replaced every 5-6 years and that they would be denying our claim. They never even bothered to ask if we had replaced them recently. We in fact had replaced them about 3 years ago and we sent them a document showing this. Then they said they would reexamine the case but after a while, they still decided to deny our claim and basically cited "corrosion" as the reason, even though in their advertising in the example above, it clearly shows that this is something they will cover. The way they advertise their coverage on the website clearly suggests that our case is something they would cover. However they are refusing to do so and to me this is just a plain case of deceptive trade practices and false advertising. Also, the Senior Claims examiner failed to return multiple calls and messages from myself as well as my mechanic. Terrible experience with this company. I would advise to stay away from it and to not believe their advertising. read more

My home was broken into and everything was stolen. my other insurances i have had to file a claim with for my car or anything else call me within a day to get the claim process started and let me know wha to expect. They told that since i reported it Thursday that i may not hear back from anyone until Monday. Cheaper is not always better and you truly get what you pay for. So if you are really wanting to someone to take care of you when you experience something terrible this is not the insurance for you. read more

During a pandemic when my wife is 8 months pregnant and lost her job to covid 19 and I am still waiting on a check not to mention already being much lower then my normal wages but still haven't received it and it went out on 9-4-20 and it's the 19th. Don't expect Deb hobbs to call you back either because it won't happen. You will have to call her supervisor who says they will over night the check on Friday but then Deb hobbs will say she can't until Monday. You already waited two weeks and your bills are due, rents behind, etc. So what's a few more days when they go home and sleep great at night with not a care in the world. I am a firm believer in karma working itself around but sadly that does nothing for me now as I am steady sinking. Maybe people will have better luck then I did but I somehow doubt that being that the supervisor lied to me. Good luck. read more

This group is a total scam artist. We have had two claims with them in the last year but neither claim has been paid. They have continuously said that they were sending the check but never do. Stay away from this insurance like the plague. We are now making this a legal and possible criminal matter. Also when you call it is extremely difficult to get ahold of your claims rep. This has been the worst claims experience i have ever had with an insurance company. The quick details- I had a Polaris RZR stolen and the insurance professional referred my case to their SIU (Special Investigations Unit- fraud investigation) because i also had a car stolen in 2000 ( yes, 18 years ago). So they say they had to do more investigation because it was suspicious i had something stolen before. Well the RZR was recovered in another state about a week after stolen. The SIU agent looked at my Bill of Sale and it showed that i purchased the RZR "new" and he called Polaris and they told him my RZR was sold 4 months before (for $22k) i actually purchased it. Therefore he is suggesting that i didn't legally own my RZR that i paid almost $30k for. its the most ridiculous payout delay i have ever heard. He doesnt understand that a dealer can get this RZR and put a bunch of aftermarket parts on it and sell it to me for a profit ... its mind boggling that this guy even has a job. Its been a month since it got stolen and still no resolution to this. I engaged an attorney last week and hopefully get something going soon. I have spent hours with these guys trying to give them every piece of info they ask for and every time i deliver they ask for something else. You hope you never have to file a claim with an insurance company but i will tell you this is the worst i have ever heard of. They are treating me like a suspect instead of a victim. read more

I bought an expensive bike and thought insurance would make sense and paid a fair bit of money for it. Unfortunately, my bike was later stolen from my garage. I called Markel and explained what happened. The person on call - Jon Yauck was responsive but in the end it appears that he wanted to get the info that he requires with minimal effort for him, in the end to deny my application. He first asked me what happened - told him it was stolen, perhaps with the lock picked. It wasn't a break-in. I gave him the police case number. Instead of taking the effort to get the case himself like most insurance companies do, he made me do it. Next, he made me fill up multiple forms and send details that took a fair bit of effort. At the end of it all, he said, based on what I told him in the first conversation that there was no sign of break in, he is going to deny my request. What is terrible here is a) It took 1.5 months for this entire process. I had no bike at this time. b) They were lazy to get info from the police case themselves. c) They decided to deny my application from the first call based on the circumstances. Rather than telling me then, they wasted my time for 1.5 months and then denied. What is worse is that they made me run around to get them information. In the end, I've lost my bike. I paid for insurance that was a total waste. The insurance guys wasted my time with giving them info. I lost an extra 1.5 months after losing my bike waiting for this to finish. read more

I insured my brand new bike. After parking it (very securely) outside my apartment building, someone came and cut through a cable running through the wheels and stole both wheels right off the bike (leaving the frame, which was U-locked). Markel covered the claim and was reasonably prompt with payment. The repair turned out to be a lot more expensive than I anticipated, so having the insurance was really important. Getting my claim took longer than it should have only because my voicemail on my phone wasn't working, so I didn't receive the claim agent's various messages about where to mail the check. In the future, I might recommend they also reach out by email, but I did eventually receive the message! read more

This company offers very low cost insurance to motorcycles and other harder to insure vehicles. They have handled my issue with fairness and integrity. I had overlooked once to remove a motorcycle after selling it. 3 years later I noticed it was still there. After showing my pink slip sale date, I was issued a refund for the overpayments. Markel Corp is the liability carrier for Let's Clean a maid service that damaged my hardwood floor and destroyed a Restoration Hardware nightstand. This company is par for the course for insurance... so for a $1600 dresser they offered $360 to repair. Unfortunately, Restoration Hardware doesn't sell the finish that was destroyed so I'm in the amazing position of having to replace an expensive piece of furniture. read more

This review only reflects my experience with a lady named Lasette ( not sure of spelling) of Markel American Insurance Company. This was during my experience of filing a claim with my airboat and offshore charter boat that was damaged during hurricane Michael. After dealing with the loss of my house due to a tree falling through it, I decided to work on my claim or potential claim of my boats. I am a charter boat deep sea fishing guide and also do airboat tours. I am a person with very thick skin and it takes allot to piss me off. But, after my experience with Lasette I felt compelled to right this review. Lasette was a very arrogent and insensitive person that appeared to have disliked her job and it showed! Everything was a " matter of fact" quick and to the point. It was as if I was an inconvenience and a bother to her and I was making her actually do her job. She actually grumbled under her breath after I told her I haven't made a claim yet. And yes, I called her out on it and she blew it off as if it didn't happen. I get everyone has problems, some bigger than others. However,I also believe that sometimes you should be professional dealing with someone who has gone through a traumatic experience. And YOU Lasette definitely need to seek a profession where you don't interact with people. BECAUSE YOUR PEOPLE SKILLS SUCK TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE!! read more
