Edwardo was very unhelpful, his answers felt very low effort like i was bothering him by being there. I went to Markell to do some transfer paperwork and to make a couple purchases. The guy that helped me was very knowledgeable about everything I asked about, to the point that I was impressed with his knowledge. I came for multiple items, but they only had one in stock of the model I wanted. Tactical and firefighter related flashlights. Hmmmm, kinda a mish-mash of stuff. Really high inventory of one or two models, but only one of others and they don't carry some key Streamlight items. They sell some firearms and holsters, ammo, cleaning supplies too. I just can't put my finger on it... slightly bizarre stock, slightly understocked, slightly understaffed, etc. (I had to wait 20+ minutes to talk with staff, the one douchy guy ahead of me would not shut up and was getting the new Grabin' Newsom paperwork done.) Very knowledgeable and they can order you almost any firearm there is (and at a great price). The best in Sonoma county by far. Over the years I have purchased about a dozen guns from Butch. No B.S. just a good knowledgeable store. I tried the new gun store on Piner rd., just like the old Helm's but nicer looking. The owner wasn't very helpful, unless I wanted what he had in stock. Let's break the ice first - To start with, the store is very small (despite being well stocked) run with an "old school" mentality with small business ambiance. And for the record, YOU MIGHT have to come in a couple of times to get use to the place or just have that outgoing personality. You will also notice that everything (and I mean almost everything) is done by paper. Needless to say, the management at Markell's have their own unique style of business and service. But once you break the ice with the staff at Markell Inc, you'll be able to enjoy the business the way I do. Always friendly, honest, willingness to make deals, great service, and great prices. For the past 7 years, I've pretty much made all my purchases, consignments, and PPT at Markell Inc, and currently I've no desire to go anywhere else. I enjoy the business so much that sometimes I will spend an hour talking with the staff when I only went there to purchase one quick item. My only complaint would be all that damn red tape and fines - but that's the fault of California DOJ and BATFE - so it's not their fault! read more

Years ago markells was the place to go. I have purchased some parts, clips, and a rifle through them. As of late, customer service is not as good with law enforcement as it use to be. Don't know if tgat is because more of their customers are civilian but now when I come in they just assume that I am not law enforcement. Stuff for your duty belt can be purchased on-line and at your door in 3 days or less in many cases from large on line retailers. If they have it in stock, and you are willing to drive 30 min out of yiur way, they are not a bad option. However with the advent of on line, there's no longer a price advantage there. Ammo is almost the same case, except that shipping can get expensive. The only thing I can think of for going there now is leo items. In the past other stores were less likely to carry leo stuff, but the last couple of years more shops do and most treet law enforcement really well. Bottom line they are not as good a deal as before, their is no advantage for law enforcement to go here any more, and they are 30 minutes out of the way from everywhere... read more

Great place, I have ordered several things here, from hard to find ammo to a gun that everyone else in town said I couldn't get my hands on. It took a little bit to get it in, because I believe it was actually hard to find. But they didn't tell me it couldn't be ordered and try to sell me something else I was not looking for, like some other shops did. Very cool guys working there, always chit chat a little bit when I go in. They have a great selection of ammo, at a good price. And a good selection of Streamlight stuff at a great price. I have bought several flash lights, and it is usually comparable to Amazon prices. And I would rather support a local business that employs friendly people if I can. read more

Went here after I was disappointed in the marked up pricing at a competitor store. A little different for location. The store seemed to be in the side of someones house. However I suppose that helps keep good prices. Had good customer service, knowledgeable staff, and a good selection to choose from. They were pleased to help. Didn't like what I thought I wanted to purchase after holding it so I left empty handed. However the only reason was to return to the drawing board of what I want. By far the best shop in the northbay for guns, ammo, and police supplies etc. It is a very small store but anything they don't have on the shelf they can get you and always for a lower price then there competitors. Service has always been great. The few times I've called to inquire about new products or to order something over the phone they were very helpful, and if they needed to do research for me they always return my calls promptly. When I go in there to purchase something, and they don't have what I want, they try to sell me some "alternative" item they have in stock and talk down to me, like "I don't know whats best for me". Butch hasn't changed much over the years and as usual always pleasant to speak and deal with. Additionally his current staff is knowledgeable and pleasant . I purchased my first two Colt AR15"s from the old Markell's back in 1990-1991 when Butch had the store out on Judah St in the City. I was in the store a few weeks ago looking for a replacement lamp for an old Surefire Flashlight. There was a connection problem . Butch worked on the light for about half an hour trying to fix the issue. I ended up buying a new and better Streamlight flashlight for my Shotgun. Its really nice to see the owner of any business devote that much personal effort and attention on a customer, in this case that owner being Butch . His customer service is definitely a 5 star rating. I ended up staying in the store an extra half an hour just catching up with Butch. He still has some of the best prices bar none for the products he has in stock. I have no intention of ever going to any other shop when the best is in Santa Rosa. read more

I recently set out on a mission to buy my first shotgun. I had done my research and narrowed my search down to either buying a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. After I had my fill of blogs, reviews, and videos I wanted to go feel the two guns in my hands, and talk to some people with more experience than I. I went to four different armories in the Santa Rosa area and thought I would share my experiences on Yelp. I personally like seeing side-by-side reviews for similar shops, so that is how I will compose this review. Markell Inc - 2 Stars Markell was the first place I went to. I was shocked when I walked in at how small this place was. Even in this small room I was not acknowledged for a good ten minutes. The two employees were both with customers, but I didn't even receive a "we will be with you in a moment." There shotgun collection was comprised of only 5 guns. To top the experience off the guy who helped me was not very knowledgeable. Schmidt & Titoni Firearms (S&T) - 4 Stars I thought S&T would be pretty small, but they actually have a decent collection. The employees were very nice and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that the gentleman helping me sold a gun out from under me. I set a used 870 down for a second to talk to him and someone picked it up as said, "I'll take it." And the employee didn't hesitate to ask if I wanted it first. Rinkor Arms - Not rating... but disappointed... After rushing across town, after work, to catch them while they were still open I found out that they weren't officially open for another few weeks even though they had a large florescent open sign illuminated in the window. B2 Enterprises - 3 Stars overall, 1 Star customer service (This is where I ended up buying my 870) Well if you are looking for selection, look no further. This place is huge compared to the others. It is very clean as well. My issue with this place was the employees. While *most* of them are knowledgeable *all* of them have poor customer service. They were all very short, sarcastic, and muttered slurs at each other in front of the guests. But here is the real kicker, I was told after filling out the paper work for my background check that I needed to buy a case that day, even though I couldn't take it home for 10 days. His reply when asked why was, "because we are going to throw it in the back and stack crap on top of it." I made him repeat his sentence back to me because I thought he was using loose speech. He told me "No, really, you should buy a case because most employees here are lazy and wont take care of your gun." Long story short, I bought a case and asked the employee to please take care of my new investment. read more

Then I went to Markell Inc, the employees knew I was there to buy my first handgun and they treated me with respect and went way out of their way to help me.
