I HATE writing bad reviews. First of all, I am a first time gun buyer, so I have NO idea what to do other than what I read on search engines as far as paperwork needed. So, I'm already intimidated and feel out of my element. Maybe I had that deer in the headlights look, but that should've been a cue to be extra courteous. I KNOW I can't be the only first time buyer. (This is 2020, by the way just before the election by the way, as a frame of reference) I walked in and got weird looks and the tension could be felt. I play in a rock band so I have long hair. I was treated like a war protestor. I'm FAR from it. I was immediately told they were sold out of everything, but the sore sure looked like they had stuff. He said it was all sold and for display purposes only. Maybe it's true. I don't know. I don't know how gun stores work, but if it's sold, I wouldn't think other people can handle them.I asked what do I need to buy a handgun from them and he told me I need a birth certificate so I could go to the DMV and get a REAL ID. Jump through hoops was the impression I got. I'd give them 1 star but he did write on a business card that I need to study the DOJ safety guide. That part is true. So, I kind of gave up on the idea of purchase. It just seemed to difficult. Months later, I went to a competitor to look around. I told them I was going to get my birth certificate that night so I could get my REAL ID because that's what Petaluma Gun & Reloading told me. Within 3o-45 minutes or so, I had done all the paperwork, took the 30 question test and passed, and purchased a gun with a simple valid CA DL and my car registration. They spent the time to show us the various rifles in the collection over and over on two separate days. We were able to determine which ones would fit our collection and be best for us to shoot. Went in today because I have been researching a lot about getting a .22lr. After going to the three top rated gun shops on yelp in Petaluma and Cotati I came here looking for a Ruger 10/22. They were extremely nice and even though other customers were at the counter they made a point to ask us what we were looking for and they had a bunch of different configs of the 10/22 as well as some used rifles. Definitely would go back here for future purchases. Good prices and friendly, helpful staff. Now it is just a matter of 8 more days and actually finding .22 ammo so I can go to the range... I was at first turned off by the low rating on yelp, but I found the other stores that were rated higher to be not as helpful or friendly and two of the other stores in Petaluma had no Rugers at all and were more expensive in general. read more

I went here during a day full of visiting many different gun stores. Thank god we found this place, especially after coming from the rude and awkward, not to mention tiny, Marin Firearms. I talked to the very knowledgeable staff for a while and they gave me advice and answered all of my questions. They are very friendly and personable. It is owned by an older couple. Though their mossbergs were a bit pricey, I didn't check their other items. They have a large selection and a catalog they can order from. I go in there occasionally to sniff out any bargains. I've bought several handguns there and actually consigned my M1 Garand too. Service has always been good to me. Prices are within normal limits. I went in to take a look around. Nice selection of firearms a gear. Pretty much the only local place for any reloading supplies.

Daryl is a little slow. It's because he takes an active interest in each customer to whom he is talking and keeps the interest on them. He has an understated passion about what he is doing and wants to help. Anything really wrong with that? Prices are not cheap but very reasonable. He was the only place I found locally who had the percussion caps, lead balls and powder I needed to start firing my 1849 originall Colt Pocket revolver. I asked a lot of newbie questions and received courteous and informative answers. I get the distinct impression that one of the other reviewers sees Dicks and Dickettes ---everywhere! I wear no hat at all and can't stand Western clothing--It's too damn constrictive and uncomfortable. I haven't killed any of natures creatures with a gun either. read more

Went in today to get some hard-to-find ammo for my new 12 gauge shotgun. The guy behind the counter was extremely friendly - even taking the time to ask what I was looking for and to say he'd be right with me as soon as he finished with his current customer. Showed me what I was looking for and even offered some welcome advice. Prices were very competitive. They had more inventory of guns and ammo than any other shop I've seen in this area. My girlfriend and I went to Petaluma guns and reloading to get another firearm. They were more then helpful with everyone of our questions and they also helped us pick out the correct firearm and when we had trouble with another firearm they referred us to an incredible gun smith. This place does it all extremely knowledgeable helpful staff great selection of firearms,ammo,cases,cleaning kits etc; and I never felt stupid asking a question which is common in other gun shops. They even do reloading when other gun shops do not. If you have or have not been give them a chance they have been around for 31 years so they are doing something right. This is our go to place from now on so much so I wrote a review so other people could have a reliable gun shop to go to which are getting harder and harder to find. I went to them to mount a scope on my rifle because I did not have a scope mounting kit which includes a F.A.T. wrench and several other items included to do professional job. He used the same tools I had at home. I asked him why he doesn't use a torque wrench to measure accurately how tight the rings are. He said in a very condescending tone that he had been doing this for 40 years and this is just fine. From my experience I understand that the spacing between the top and bottom of the rings should be the same on both sides so the pressure is even and does not harm the scope. He torqued on the rings so hard he put a bad chip (not scratch) on my brand new Nikon camo finished $200 scope. He also did not put the scope set back as I asked him to. He was so cocky to anything I was saying as if my requests were ridiculous that he wasn't even listenning to me. He kept glancing at the other gentleman that worked there (he did not think I noticed) with an annoyed look on his face. If this was not enough I got home and the cross hairs were so crooked it looked like a blind person mounted the scope. If you looked at the top of the rifle you can see the scope was crooked. I understand everyone has a different site picture but this was not even close to straight. I will go back and try to get a refund and hopefully the will honor it, although I am now stuck with a big scratch on my new expensive scope and still not mounted professionally. I will probably spend the $100 on a mounting kit and do it myself. read more

I have visited this store for years. When it first opened was its heyday, the owner was happy and looking to do business. Later grumpy and rude, now after a near death experiance nicer but quiet and still not friendly. Prices are the highest in the area, defenately bring your check book and credit card (s). I recently (forgetting where I was) purchased a scope that I found later online at several places for substatially less (one was 110.00 less). I was in the market for something durable, easy to carry and basically foolproof. I wanted a handgun for fishing trips in the mountains and possibly to carry while horseback riding. I was looking for something that would have plenty of stopping power for any thing that walks or crawls here in California. Blued steel and inclement weather don't work well together, and I wanted something with more firepower and less weight than a 6" L frame S&W stainless revolver. I also wanted something a little less pricy than a 4 or 6" .44 mag. I was kinda figuring I'd have to compromise between weight, stopping power, price etc. They just happened to have a Glock 20, 10mm in stock. 10 rounds of a rather powerful autoloading cartridge in a gun significantly smaller and lighter than either the medium or large frame revolver. I've been coming into this shop for nearly 30 years now, I used to buy his reloaded ammo back in the day, this was my first gun purchase here, but I was pleased with customer service and price. When I've been in the store, clerks have been fine as far as I'm concerned. Like many gun shop owners, Darryl is rather dry and not trying to practice his skills as a comedian, but I didn't go here for comedy, I was looking for a gun. I frequently wear a cowboy hat, but when I haven't I get the same level of service, courtesy, and professionalism.
