I'm still surprised that after a little more than an hour, I was able to pop a balloon, let alone even come close to hitting the targets! On a recent Saturday morning, my wife and I joined a small group of others in an archery class at Backroom Archery-Turra's. We entered through the retail shop, where that was filled with all kinds of archery paraphernalia that I had no idea about, and we were escorted through a back door to a big room-- the range. Our husband and wife team provided safety information and then handed out bows. They worked step by step to help us learn body positions with the bow that would help us become successful archers. Then we practiced launching some 8 arrows down towards the targets. Many of our arrows missed their target-- some sliding down the floor and others striking the thick padded blanket at the end of the room. After each volley (?) of arrows, they would go over another new technique to refine our posture, and each time our accuracy improved. By the end of our class, they had us pin a balloon to the target. I'm still impressed that I was able to pop the balloon two separate times (when the range was clear, we would all walk down the range and collect our arrows and get set for the next round). It was a fun way to spend the morning and for me, quite satisfying. I now have a lot of respect for those Olympic archers-- and Katniss Everdeen. My only suggestion is to wear long sleeves if it's a cool morning. The range room is a big space with a concrete floor and was a little cool. I've recommended the experience to friends and look forward to returning someday-- will be a great activity on a rainy day. read more

I'd 100% recommend taking an archery class here! We went on a Saturday morning at 9:30 am, and our instructor, Theresa, was absolutely amazing--so kind, patient, and full of helpful tips to improve our aim. She really made sure we felt confident every step of the way. The class size was perfect, just five people, so it felt personal without being too crowded. Safety was a top priority, which I really appreciated. Each of us got our own lane, a bow, and six arrows to practice with. Pro tip: if your fingers get sore from pulling the string, ask for a glove--it makes a big difference! We practiced hitting targets and even got to pop balloons, which was super satisfying. Since the lanes are indoors, this is an all-weather activity, rain or shine. It was honestly the highlight of the day--fun, unique, and something I'd happily do again! Zero stars if I could. The guy working, Ron, was rude, condescending, not very welcoming, and disrespectful. We stood there waiting for him to acknowledge us or welcome us into the store. And he stood by and didn't respond to us when we asked for help. I would ask a question or make a statement, being new to the world of archery, and he would respond with sarcastic remarks, would respond rudely, or would completely ignore what I would say. He tried to sign me up for the archery classes on Saturday but I made an excuse and got out of there as soon as I could. He's not very welcoming, personable, or helpful. Save your money and go elsewhere. It's a shame, I would've loved to support a local business, especially one only a few miles from my home. read more

Knowledgeable people | Fun place | Great offers My husband and I dropped in over the weekend to check out this place. We weren't planning on doing any shooting, but we decided to try out different bows after talking to Theresa. Justin and Theresa are awesome! They helped us out answering all of our questions, telling us lots of helpful tips and advice, and were very patient with us throughout the entire time they let us shoot. They spent 2 hours with us. We learned about the different bows they have and what they're used for, and apparently the arrows are even more of a process to decide what is perfect for the shooter's needs. We tried out a hybrid compound, compound, and re-curve bow. I was pretty overwhelmed with the amount of focus you need to do before letting that arrow fly! Though it was my first time, I tried to create a mental check-list to remember all of the things I need to do before shooting so that I have the proper form: -position feet correctly -check your hips -use your core -place the bow correctly in my thumb area of my hand -turn out the elbow a little bit -draw and pull back with the back muscle **make sure your finger isn't on the trigger** -check alignment of hand on cheek -is the string hitting your nose? -don't look at the arrow! look at the middle part of the bow and take aim I felt pretty weak after a few tries already! It was so much fun, but man, I kept thinking to myself, "gee, I'm a pretty active person. I rock climb and hike a lot, so why am I tired and finding myself sore?". We're just using different muscle groups that we've never used before. Archery is such a sport! (and a fun one too!) We plan on coming back to do private lessons. We really liked this place because the people that work there are more than willing to spend the time to show you proper techniques and form and to get you immersed in the sport. That's probably why they didn't charge us for our first session. This place is perfect for everyone -- families, couple/date night, young, and old. It's safe, too. Their rates are pretty reasonable, so if you're looking for something to do, check this place out. I believe it's $5 for a drop-in (assuming you have your gear already) and you have about 20 minutes of shooting. If I come back for private lessons with my husband, it's $30. read more

My fiancé had his bow serviced by them less than 6 months ago, and only used it 3 times since it was serviced. He went to pull it back last night (no arrow and did not dry fire it) and it made a snapping sound and the strings came loose. He took it in today and told them what happened and they were blaming it on him. When He took it in to get serviced they did a "full" inspection on the bow and said it needed a lot of upgrades, which he agreed to and paid for. Now they are saying that the comps are too sharp, but the reason they are sharp now is most likely because the strings they put on weren't the correct ones for the draw strength and when he pulled it back this last time, it messed everything up because the strings couldn't handle the weight. One of the upgrades they did to the bow was put new strings on. My fiancé chose specific string colors to put on the bow, when he went to pick it up a month later he noticed that they put different strings on than what he ordered. This is why we think they may have put the wrong strings on for the draw weight of the bow. The person who my fiancé talked to yesterday told him he should just buy a new bow. read more

I unfortunately came late the day of because I thought they opened officially at 10 am but my lesson was at 9 am actually. They were extremely understanding and gave us the opportunity to still take the class even though we were late. Ron taught the class amazingly in a progression of added techniques to the stance. Never go to someone that isn't an archer for anything to do with archery. Gotta say nothing but negative issues with this place. Fletching that doesn't stay on, yet over glued and messy. Found a couple strings cut on my main string, she says I did it, but it was around the D loop, so I expect it happened there, string replaced and charged full price! That was sweet! Bought two bows here spent over 3500 bucks. One for me, another for my Girlfriend. Huge mistake. Had issues trying to get our arrows to group. Was told it was us....I've been a bow hunter for 25 years. Took my bow to another shop. It was never tuned. Just taken out of the box and strung up. Even my D loop was installed incorrectly. I decided to take it to another local Hoyt Dealer, and in about 30 min of tuning and fixing the timing I was nailing the bullseye like I should be. Had the same issues with my Girlfriends bow, and now shes doing great also! They were very nice, just not knowledgeable on anything other than sales. read more

Do yourself a favor and go to West Coast Archery in Petaluma. Better selection, better service, nicer people. I desperately wanted to like Back Room but they messed up too many things for me. Not serving a bow right so the peep came out and hit me in the face, telling me bow was a "sack of sh*t," and the final straw was when the owner Teresa didn't have my arrows ready after promising to do so, then accidentally gluing in two field points. So I buy arrows from her, and I can only use 4 of them. All I can say is, drive the extra fifteen minutes to Hans at West Coast. He is a champ and actually cares. read more

They have a much bigger shooting area w/a lounge behind it than they had when they first started. They have classes, theme nights, & leagues. For example, they have weekly Ladies Night shoot events on Wednesday from 7-8p (u can come earlier to get more shooting in) & all types of bows are welcome. Others are Vegas night & traditional night. The shop (which does repairs) has a great selection of all you need & the staff is extremely helpful...especially for newbies. Easy parking. Open Tues-Sat. I'm so glad to have someplace nice in town by me. read more

I literally watched her change the price on a marked, already priced item. I walked in there to buy a target, saw one with a clear price sticker of 139.99, with a red 2 going through the 3, indicating it would be priced at 129.99. When I asked about which target was the best for my set up, and asked about the price of each, she walked over to her price-sticker gun and put a 159.99 label right over the existing marked down price. I was in complete shock. I wish I could give a 0 star review for such a cheesy salesperson move. I would have bought the target for the price it was listed at, but once she saw I was going to buy it, it suddenly became 30 bucks more! What a joke. I will go back in there, there are too many other excellent archery shops in Sonoma county. read more

I've been in here 10x in the last 5 years. It's not the cheapest store, you might find your 200 dollar part for 169.99 online.... they are a mom and pop business. They don't carry a lot of lower priced items. Amazon shoppers look elsewhere. They are extreme knowledgeable for newer customers and experienced. Nothing is fast, work takes time, costs money and isn't cheapest. But everything they've done for me has been A level. They have a range in back to test your stuff on site as well and the two owners are friendly. And are extremely generous at giving pointers. They are awesome. All be it they are a little spacey .... but extremely kind. A genuine experience you won't find other places. 6 stars. read more

I took my crossbow in to have the stings replaced on my crossbow and I talked to the owner Turra told me total cost was $136 and some change. I was told by her that I had to pay half up front. I thought I was being charged a bit high for the total cost but I just paid it all up front and Turra said if she charged me to much, she will refund the difference. She first told me that I had high end strings and she would order me the same or better. Come to find out she ordered me Rhrino strings, (they are not high end strings) I looked them up online. She also stated that I needed to replace all my strings but that too was incorrect. I found that out by a professional archery store owner in Petaluma. She stated that when my bow is fixed that she will not call me because she means to but just don't get around to it because she gets to busy, that I will need to call in in about 2 weeks. She also said if I don't pick up my bow or forget it is there and they have to call me and I leave it past a certain time line then they will charge me rent on my bow. First of all I won't forget they have my bow and 2nd, any good business will call you, the customer and tell us that our item is ready to pick up. So at the almost 2 week point, I called and Turra said that UPS has not delivered strings yet and she also said that I will owe her more money when I pick my bow up, like $17 and some change, I then told her that I already paid her $136 and that was for high end strings. She then said she could get me top of the line strings if I want them. I said what you ordered is fine. She said call back in after the weekend and on Tuesday when their open. I did that and UPS just delivered that day with my strings. So because of the Fires we had here in Santa Rosa, she was unable to string my bow until the following week, of which was no problem at all considering all of our situations. I been putting in long hours doing security patrol protecting against looters for our clients properties. So I called back as instructed by Turra and she thinks my bow was ready for pick-up but her husband did not put the tag of being fixed on the bow but she said it looks done so go ahead and come pick it up. So after work on Tuesday I went and picked up my bow and there was a problem with with Turra not knowing to charge me an extra $17 or she might owe me $5. I seen that she had my old strings in her hand of the packaging of the new strings two of which were still good and never should have been replaced. So I asked for those to keep and so I could also look up online to verify price and quality of product. After approximately 7 minutes, Turra said send her an email and if I owe her more money or she owes me then she will let me know. I left and as I got in my vehicle she came out and gave me $5.35. Come to find out the whole job should have only cost $60. I know this because on the 10th shot the main string broke and I went to West Coast Archery in Petaluma to get it fixed. The owner is very knowledgeable and professional and he made sure to tell me that he will call me when the bow is ready for pick-up. I will never do business with Turra's Outback Archery again. read more

I am sure that I will sound like a broken record, but Backroom Archery is a fantastic place for Archery! My latest experience was an urgent need for my bow. It was the weekend before I went Elk hunting this season and my bow was not balanced. The archery store was closed until the following Tuesday and I would be gone. I called Ron and though he had family visiting, he drove down to the shop and met me to put a stabilizer on my bow and balance it. I practiced a few times and was a great improvement. I came here with my family to pick up a great new hobby. I always wanted to learn archery but for reasons beyond my control I could never get around to actually doing it. I am so glad I overcame my own inhibitions and decided to come here. They knew that we were absolutely new to this so they taught us the basics and most importantly they always made us feel that we can do it. If your reading this you probably have a love for the sport of archery as much as I do. Long ago I discovered archery and lived & breathed it for about 20 years. Of course, life gets in our way of our passions and archery fell by the wayside, for what was to be a 25 year hiatus. Now life has allowed me the chance to fall in love with my one true passion once again! Driving around one day, I happened to come across Turra's Back room Archery, and after about 3 weeks of mulling the idea of once again shooting, I decided to pay them a visit. Turra's is the pentacle of a "Mom & Pop archery shop that was born out of the love to share their expertise with those who are just getting into the sport or someone who is an accomplished archer desiring the latest in equipment. Both Ron and Teressa (owners) walked me through the all of the new advances that have taken place over the past 25 years and totally outfitted me with the latest "state of the art" equipment that the industry offers. It's too bad that this shop is the only one around this area. Due to that, it's apparent that they can charge what they want for certain items. Even so, they don't carry much for well rounded archers, like older bow tech support or much crossbow stuff. The lady who works there, Theresa, talks so much to everybody that she pretty much ignores the current customer waiting right in front of her. Then, if the phone rings, she'll be on it for so long that one wonders if she's really interested in true customer service. Perhaps it's just that she's a little spacey. We recently wanted some work done on our equipment and were told to come back in one week. When we did, it hadn't even been touched, and even though she had our phone number, never called to let us know it was delayed. No apologies, just excuses. This place is not so professional as a business should be run. Like the guy before me said, don't go there if you're in a hurry. You'll be sorry. She just never stops talking. Go when the male worker is just there. You get things done fast and he's to the point. Other than that, it's a friendly environment. But I get that at home. In a shop, I want good service. read more

I went in for cam and string. They said it would be ready in 2 weeks. I call at the end of 2 weeks and they say it will come in another week (ok, shipping not their fault). I call at the end of the 3rd week, they say the part came in, but I have a long line of people ahead of me. WHAT! I'm supposed to pick it up last week. I should have had first priority (so I thought, but I still don't say anything). Then, I finally get it and the string doesn't center on the cam. The string is also twisted causing the peep to rotate. They drop my peep setting so low that my sight can't go low enough to adjust in all the pins. Poor service. Nice people is right. Slower pace is right. Make sure your not in a hurry is right. However, not everyone is taken care of 100%. read more
