Unusual to me, but there were whole small steamer clams in the bowl which was a pleasant surprise. I am not sure what happened to Markey's this year. My husband and I have been going there for decades. The food had always been very consistent but we were very disappointed this summer. We went to Markey's several times since June. The first time we chalked it up to Covid and the changes many restaurants have had to make. The second time wasn't much better. I don't know what they did, but their chowders really fell in quality. Their lobster bisque was terrible the first time and did get better the last two times, but the clam and fish chowders are just not good now. Well we came down to Browns to find it closed so we thought we would try Markey's. I can say we were pleased. We had the sea food with lobster plate and it was very good and plentiful. The only complain I have is the tarter sauce. Listen, tarter sauce isn't hard to make and it's suppose to be sweet. Basically mayo and relish. This tarter tasted like watered down lumpy mayo. This has always been a great place for seafood and we were always very happy. We live a half hour away so this is an easy jaunt if we want to eat at the beach. Today we were very disappointed. The staff acted like they'd rather be anywhere else.for many years we'd order the lobster salad plate with a few hot dog rolls. Today it came with lobster, several pieces of romaine, a couple of slices of tomatoes, coke slaw and French fries! It used to be a nice salad plate , a healthy alternative, without fries. I was excited for some fresh sea food and chowder on my family vacation but got sadly disappointed! I order a fried clam strip plate that came out ice cold and normally don't complain about anything but if I'm pay 21 dollars it's got to at least be warm. Then the New England clam chowder. I was expecting some creamy potato delicious concoction turned out to be some watery full clams with some potato's i.e. I ate 3 shelled steamers with a couple chunks of potatoes. I've been going to Markey's for about 20 years and this year was notably different in both good and bad ways. There have been some improvements. They now take credit cards, and all of the payments are taken at the main register. I think there's a new bar area as well. That said, the intercom is still way too loud. The guys serving lobster don't speak English so asking them for things like the wooden lobster sticks was an exercise in futility. The steamers were awful - they tasted like pencil erasers, very rubbery and chewy with bits of broken shells. The lobster, however, was cooked perfectly and was delicious. I did not try any of the fried food. I thought $25 for a 1.5 lb lobster was a bit high. Overall, they get a 3 out of 5. read more

We have been going to Markeys (3-4 times a year) for more than 50 years. I think this visit will be our last time, something has changed. The prices have increased quite a bit, and the taste of the food is not the same. We were used to spending $50+. This time it was $75. We always order the same thing on the menu. We visited on a Friday night in July. We are used to having to wait in a line for a parking space and then another line to order our food. This time plenty of parking spaces and only 1 person in front of us to order. Usually we are standing outside waiting to get in to order. Markeys is about an about an hour from where we live, but we have decided that we can get food that tastes better than what they have now closer to home for less. The help was friendly, service was quick, and the restaurant was clean, except for the bathroom. Wish it was a better rating. read more

I went here earlier today I had been going to Markeys often during summers for decades but unfortunately this will be my last time going here! Not a very clean environment despite the sanitation rules in place so I will be reporting this to the Governor's staff! My table was in a good place for social. Distancing but was disgustingly filthy . I did not see anyone from staff so I cleaned it myself! The most disappointing part of my dining experience were the steamers... second time this has happened: They were full of sand/ muddy just plain gross... The steamers were always my favorite part of why I would come here and always yummy but NO longer..... If you want a good ol' New England lobster & clam shack, this is the place. Not many frills, but the food is fresh, hot, and the service is good and friendly. Steamers were piping hot and sweet. A little sandy, but I don't blame them for that. Fried calamari and onions rings were great! Will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

This place does lobster right - at least from this WNY'ers perspective. However, it's not clean or neat or tidy - it's a lobster place selling and serving up lobster right and inexpensive! It's also a bit hard to understand how to order and it's a cash only place. After a visit to both Brown's and Markey's, I have to say that my preference is to Markey's, hands down. The staff is much friendlier. The atmosphere is a bit nicer (although still very casual). I also felt the prices were much better. I got a twin lobster combo for around $26 and that's what I paid for one lobster at Browns (similar size being 1 1/4-1 1/2lb). The butter at Markey's is a salted butter whereas at Brown's it seems to be unsalted and a bit plain. We are officially a Markey's family and will definitely be returning! read more

Damn....third time here and I have NO idea why it doesnt have 5 stars. I had just the clam chowder and the mussels today but they were fantastic. The chowder has whole clams in it and yummy potatoes with a wonderful broth. The mussels, oh the mussels...so good. Not as big as the last time but that varies with the season. Its the taste that makes me keep coming back. They are so good. Sprinkle some garlic salt on for a spin on them. It gave it a great new taste. I highly recommend this place. Love this place but drove an hour to come here in mid March and they were closed! Before leaving checked online and their hours stated they were open 11am-9pm. Their website states hours are seasonal and to check for updates but there were no updates. Website should be updated. We were recently on vacation nearby and heard this was a good place for lobster. First realize that we are from California, so we don't see much lobster. This place was incredible though. It takes a few minutes to figure out the process. One counter for fried food, one counter for lobster, and another counter for clams and drinks, but the food made it all worth while. This is like a drive-in, but with awesome seafood instead of burgers and fries. The ambiance was perfect for us because we were there for the food, not the atmosphere. Still it is very scenic sitting right on the edge an enormous lush green marsh. Again, there isn't much green in California this time of year, so the scenery made an impression. We had fried clams, steamed clams, and whole lobster. Servings were large and the food was simple, but incredible. Two lobsters for $12.99 was the special of the day. Those two lobsters would cost us over $100 in Calif. They crack the lobster perfectly for you and it is cooked just right. The lobster was fresh and sweet with or without the melted butter. If you want a great deal with amazing food and can handle the drive-in service and atmospere, Marky's will not disappoint. read more

My favorite thing about business trips to other utilities is finding awesome places to go for lunch. Since I was near the coast I new I had to find some seafood, Seriously this place and Browns is right next to each other and I decided on Markey's because the prices were marginally cheaper (gotta pinch them pennies). My buddy and I split their lobster roll, and a fried clam/scallop platter with fries. The lobster roll was definitely the favorite here, the sweetness of the meat coupled with the buttery toasted bun made for one delicious mouthful. The clams and scallops were also very tasty. They were lightly breaded and packed with flavor. The only reason this wasn't a five is because a few things seemed like an afterthought. It isn't hard to make fresh fries and when everything else on the plate is phenomenal, its shocking to eat fries I could buy at the grocery store. If I pay $14 for a lobster roll, I would expect it to come with fries. The tartar sauce needed a little more punch, you really had to douse your fried food with some sauce to get that flavor to come through. Also put out some lemon wedges, who doesn't like to squeeze some lemon juice on their fried seafood. If I'm ever in the area I would definitely go again, this place is really good with the potential to be great. If they treated all items on the menu with the same respect as the seafood they would hit it out of the park. read more

I really liked Markey's - I really did. So I wanted to give them a few more stars, but there were problems. Let's start with the positives. First, the parking lot isn't nearly as monstrous as Brown's is across the street, which means that it will be much easier to get a table AND the line will be much smaller than at the competition. (I admit it - I was actually on my way to Browns when I ended up at Markeys). Next, the deck hanging off the back of the restaurant really has an appealing view that I would go back for. And as far as food quality, the steamed lobster was cooked perfectly and the fries were just right. They even ripped the lobster up and down and sideways so that it was super easy to remove the meat with nothing but the plastic fork and wooden skewer provided. Kudos for that! But as I mentioned before, there were problems. The biggest problem is one of convenience. If you would like to get fried foods only - you're all set since you'll only have to frequent one line. But if you want to get steamed lobster or steamed clams, you'll have to visit two other lines, respectively. And no, they won't just put in a drink/fries order for you in any of the non-fried foods lines. VERY inconvenient, especially when the fried food line typically runs out the front door. This also means that it will be extremely unlikely that all of your ordered items will come out at the same time. The second problem is price. The lobster and other seafoods were reasonably priced, but I just about choked when two orders of fries and two medium sodas came to $13.50. I thought maybe the girl had made a mistake. But no. I'll pay extra for fresh seafood, but for fries and Coke? Uh uh. All in all, I'd go back, but I'll probably grumble again about being economically hijacked with the fries and drinks. read more

We ended up at Markey's because the place across the street was super busy, and we had a 6-week old baby in tow. We thought we made the right choice, it smelled great and was very clean. That's where the good parts end...After ordering & spending $60+, we waited less than 10 minutes for our order, and looking at our tray was pretty evident why. All the food looked like it was thrown on, literally. My daughter & I had a lobster roll and clam roll ($15+ & $13+), respectively~that's all you get, no fries, no coleslaw. These are served on hot dog rolls, toasted, but for the price, esp. with no extras, it was disappointing to the point I asked a server about it. Though I had an overflow of clams, they were not at all tasty. My daughter's lobster was shredded in the roll, prompting her to say, "Now we know why everyone's across the street!" Dad's clam plate, fries on the bottom with a few clams on top, and even looking at it, did NOT look like a $25 meal, nor did it taste it. He was still hungry after eating. I'd never been there before, my parents discovered it on a fried clam crawl with some family friends. Located on a small tidal flat, and in a small grouping of fried seafood places out in Seabrook, is MArkeys, a popular, crowded place to go get Lobster and Fried Seafood. Cash Only, and counter-service only, you'd better send a person to stake out a table out on the patio overlooking the tidal waters, rather than inside. After doing some research on some good fresh lobster with a nice view in the New England area, we ended up coming here on our way to Maine. Was really happy we made the decision to come here! Parking wise, their main parking lot is pretty tight, we didn't realize it until later that they have a larger parking lot if you drive a little past the restaurant. Next time we go there we will definitely park over there. The restaurant is pretty large with lots of indoor seating as well as outdoor seating with a beautiful view of the water. Ordering wise, since it was our first time was kind of confusing. Basically there are 3 ordering stations: one for fried foods, one for lobsters, and one for beer and steamers. We ended up trying the fresh lobsters, steamers, corn, chowder, and fried oysters. The lobster's were cooked and tasted perfect! The shell's here are pretty soft compared to other lobster's we tried in the boston area. My other half also got really lucky as her lobster had eggs. Price wise, couldn't go wrong as it was 20 dollars for 2 medium lobsters. As for the corn on the cob, it goes perfect with the lobster. The steamers were very fresh, like most folks have probably said, the steamers included that outer skin part so you would have to remove that before eating. Also you will occasionally get a sandy taste in some of the clams. The fried oysters were one of the best i've tasted, so crispy and no fishy taste at all. I only wished i ordered the larger order of this! The clam chowder unfortunately was too watery for me. Not sure if that's their style or not, but I guess we prefer the creamy and thicker style. Would of given this place 5 stars if not for the clam chowder. Overall we were happy to come to this restaurant for the reasons mentioned above. Perhaps the most unconventional Easter dinner I can think of, but one of the most delicious, Markey's was a real treat this past weekend. Places like this are what make New England a great place to live and why I generally will not order seafood like this anywhere else I may travel. We began our meal feasting like kings on the biggest, sweetest steamers I've ever had, several orders of perfectly cooked and chilled shrimp cocktail, and fresh shucked oysters. After about an hour or so of appetizers, I didn't think I could stomach anything else, but my motto of "go big or go home" rang in my ears and I ordered the fried scallop/clams plate. Beautiful golden fried seafood delights with just the right amount of batter and seasoning served on a bed of, what else, French fries. Nothing overly special about the fries, but both the scallops and clams were outstanding. Customers order fried items at one counter, lobsters/oysters/shrimp cocktail at a second counter, and finally alcoholic beverages (beer or wine) at a third. I admit, I found the multiple ordering stations slightly confusing at first, but thankfully we were there with veterans of the place and they all knew the system well. The mutliple step ordering process seems like it's a necessity due to space limitations, and probably has the added benefit of keeping more people inside the building and fewer waiting outside in line, deterring potential passers-by from stopping in. Not to mention it prevents you from having to wait in a crazy line if all you want is another beer or something. Seating is a competitive event here, even on Easter Sunday, so be prepared to wait and if need be, be a little vulturesque to snag your spot. You kind of get the stink eye from other customers if you linger a little too long (which we did, sorry!), but we truly couldn't move after the amount we'd consumed. Be forewarned. Markey's vs. Brown's - two lobster pounds situated directly across the street from each other. Both are similar, yet different in many ways and each seem to have their own group of faithfuls. I wrote a review a year ago for Brown's. Please read if you have a chance. The Markey's/Brown's rivalry has been a fun part of my family history for years as my parents introduced me to both lobster shacks when I was little. I prefer Brown's, but my Dad strongly disagrees with me. Or at least he did... until our recent visit to Markey's. My family used to choose Markey's over Brown's due to seemingly smaller crowds and the pretty view from its large covered deck. Brown's has a smaller porch with a view interrupted by the Seabrook Power Plant. Markey's serves alcoholic beverages, while Brown's is BYOB. Both lobster shacks are quite busy during summer months, but my beloved Brown's always seemed to have a long line spilling out from the front, while Markey's crowds appear a bit more contained due to different ordering systems. My parents prefer Markey's seafood to Brown's, but I believe the opposite. Again, please read my review of Brown's for more detail. I always thought Markey's fried seafood was decent, chowder just okay, and lobster rolls pretty packed. The restaurant itself has always been low key, but in an original and charming sort of way. Enter the building and you're greeted by a large lobster pool and a counter for placing orders. Staff is usually young and friendliness/quality of service is hit or miss. The first and most pressing issue with Markey's on our visit earlier this month was that the restaurant was absolutely filthy! The chairs and tables felt so sticky. There was a plumbing problem in the bathroom and it was quite disgusting. I actually overheard another customer bring the issue in the bathrooms to the manager's attention. Hopefully it was addressed promptly. Sorry Markey's, but I think you lost a few points with my parents that day. I ordered a lobster roll and was impressed with its generous size. There was a little too much mayonnaise for my liking, but I was pretty happy about the amount of lobster. Well... until I bit into a piece of shell, and then another piece, and another. Shell in the lobster roll is not appetizing and no one wants to see me spitting food into my napkin. My mom ordered the same and said she was finding pieces of shell in her lobster roll too. My dad had the fried haddock plate. I tried a little bit and thought the fish itself was delicious. I love Markey's tartar sauce too. The fries are pretty boring, but dip them in that tartar sauce and it's French fry heaven. The fried haddock plate may have salvaged Markey's good standing with my Dad, but my Mom was quite disappointed. My dad did comment, however, that he felt our meal was a little too tough on the wallet for the overall quality we received. Since we were staying in Seabrook, NH, we had done some research of nearby places for lobster rolls. Markey's and Brown's kept coming up and, conveniently, they are located across the street from one another and were less than 3 miles from our hotel. Due to the direction we were coming from, Markey's parking lot was easier to enter so we started our lobster roll journey at Markey's Lobster Pool. While the parking lot is small, since it was Friday afternoon on a dreary day, we were able to get a parking spot easily. We walked inside and placed an order for a lobster roll ($13.50) and saw that they had a large indoor space with cushioned chairs as well as a covered outdoor area. To the right of the area where we ordered was a raw bar as well as the bar... bar but we opted to just stick with the lobster roll. Our order was called quickly and we went outside to one of the picnic benches that overlooked the water. The lobster roll was quite large; unfortunately, most of the lobster meat was shredded. We both prefer large chunks of lobster so this was definitely a disappointment. The lobster was dressed with some mayonnaise and placed on a piece of lettuce before being surrounded by the hot, buttered bun. Markey's was an OK lobster roll but the lobster didn't taste that fresh and it wasn't sweet at all. It was a disappointing lobster roll and Brown's wasn't much better. We would suggest going to Brown's if you can only eat at one but make the hour long trek to Maine for legit lobster rolls. read more
