Markey's fried seafood and lobster rolls looked *really* good, but I decided to get a large clam chowder since I had been craving it for days. It's the first New England style chowder I've had that had big whole clams in it, but I must say that I prefer the chopped up kind better to get that perfect balance of clam, broth, and potato in one bite. The broth had a skim milk consistency so it was healthier tasting and less filling - I prefer creamier broths. Overall, the chowder was fine, but I'd get something else next time. I also sampled the fish chowder which was identical to the clam one but with chunks of white fish instead of clams. They have an outdoor patio with a pleasing view of a rocky riverbed. What a shame. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves and take a trip to Markey's. I have been going there for over 30 years. We heard there was a new owner. We stood in line more than 30 minutes on a Thursday in April, the one cashier was walking around talking to other employees and then to a previous customer for more than 15 mins. Other employees came to help but she never resumed her position stopping the whole place dead! The previous customer couldn't get their problem fixed because NO ONE there spoke English fluently! I personally asked the raw seafood guy if I could put an order in for what I wanted while I stood in line so all the food could come out together... he said No. My food was ready 25 minutes after the rest of my party! And the raw clams were full of shells So two hours later we had an early dinner for top price. We left truly aggravated and frustrated. Mrs Markey come back! Wow what's going on? This was always our spot every year. Went yesterday and it changed so much you don't know where to order and no signs. Plus they ran out of onion rings and changed the sweet and sour sauce. Sounds crazy but why change what works? These little things are what you look forward to. The amount of food per order has decreased in size but the cost went up. The fried shrimp and fried claims were barely cooked. The cashier looked like she was sleeping or on something as she just stared at us and we had to prompt her to take our order. A little history, at least from our experiences at Markey's over the past couple of years to today. So my understanding is that at least for over a year from today (maybe for 3 years) they've been trying to sell Markey's and during that time we saw the food quality and taste go down. Maybe the people selling it just wanted out and didn't care? So today, having heard Markey's had been sold, we figured we'd give it another try. We were NOT impressed. The fried food was greasy and pretty much tasteless. Don't know what else to say...we ordered a clam/scallop plate and fried oysters, and tossed most of the fried oysters away. What we did eat wasn't much better. The Cole slaw wasn't very good either. Certainly not the same Cole slaw recipe used by the previous owners at Markey's. Sad but we won't be going back any time soon. read more

The haddock plate was disappointing. I don't think it was even haddock. It used to be thicker and so flavorful. This tasted bland and like pollock. Plates are smaller and prices are higher. Even the containers for ketchup or tartar sauce are tiny. read more

It can be pricy, for sure, but wow what a loaded lobster roll. You definitely get your money's worth on that. The steamed lobsters can be selected, cooked, and cracked for you per request, but that definitely can get steep. The view is gorgeous and definitely worth taking a trip to see. Maybe we'll try Browns next time. $65 for two of us, we both got the half and half of haddock/clam strips. Strips were like scraps of batter and not very much clam strip, haddock was dry and overcooked. All the fried food was dark and seemed either overcooked or cooked in oil that should of been changed. Food wasn't awful, but it wasn't really very good either. One other person with us got scallops and although they looked dark he said they were good. We will probably hit browns next time and see where they are at, but I'm afraid our time at Markey's may be at an end. read more

Lunch at Markeys was extremely disappointing. Let me start with the lobster rolls. If there's one thing here that should be great, it better be the lobster rolls. We had two lobster roll. Less than "meh". While the portion was generous (probably 5 oz), the meat itself consisted of mostly shredded lobster meat w excessive mayo. The biggest disappointment was the lobster meat: if you aren't going to get serious chunks of tail, knuckles, and the heart of the claw, there's no reason to get a lobster roll, because it's not going to be bursting with sweet lobster flavor. We also got fried clams and the kids got greasy burgers. Other special there. I would go out of my way to stay away and try other better options that care more about a distinctive culinary experience. This was about mass production. read more

Your basic seafood and lobster joint. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, which is a good thing since they get crowded at mealtimes. And now that Brown's is closed due to their fire, Markey's is likely to be even busier. We had the lobster roll, calamari plate, etc., all standard fare and all of it fried. Service was fast and reasonably friendly. Kind of pricey for what it was but our cravings were satisfied. Probably the best deal was the Markey's baseball cap for $4! read more

Terrible. Thin oily clam chowder with almost no clams. chicken strips were huge chick breasts pounded flat with excessive breadcrumbs and over cooked. Tuna roll was plain glob tuna. First, don't order the lobster roll if you are expecting large pieces of lobster. it is shredded lobster mixed with mayonnaise much like you would do a chicken salad. Second, counter employees need to be trained to answer questions correctly. when I specifically asked does your lobster roll have large pieces of meat the counter person said yes. Third, fries ordered well done were not well done. Had it not been takeout and I was eating in the restaurant both items would've been returned. read more

My review is strictly for those of you who want to try their lobster roll and bisque. I cannot comment on other foods, like fried stuff. I saw a show on Travel Channel about Markey's and Brown's, separated by a highway going into Seabrook, so I tried both of them at the same time. Lobster roll: at the time of this writing (May2013), Markey's cost: $11.95, Brown's=$13.50. Markey's for the win, with tons more lobster meat, about an inch longer, also with less mayo flavor. Roll was better at Brown's, buttered, flat at the bottom, a traditional lobster roll. Both were made with absolutely freshest meat, boil a lobster, use the meat to make the sandwich. Lobster Bisque: The difference is that Markey's is the REAL lobster bisque you'd find at a French bistro. It also has tons of lobster meat. Brown's may be a crowd pleaser, if you like creamy clam chowder. This one was plenty creamy but no lobster meat at all. So all things considered - Markey's for the win. Oh, they have better chairs. We stopped here as we tooled around New England - to bring my spouse up to 50 states visited. That said, we LOVE lobster, and had to pick between Markey's and Brown's. My wife had cherry stone clams for the very first. time. Delicious! The odd? We wanted female lobsters, hoping to get the roe. They asked if wanted the eggs "washed out" - we said HUH? Seems the locals don't like the eggs? We said, keep the eggs for sure, they even wrote it on the receipt. In asking - they said - well, you have to cook the lobster longer to make sure the eggs are "cooked", and the meat gets tough. We said, cook the female lobster just as you would the male! The reply - well, some of the eggs may still be black. - hmmm - we love caviar - go for it. And yes, we had eggs, and some were black and some were red - and ALL were delicious - the meat was perfect, the eggs were perfect, and the cherrystone clams were great as well. We just had to make sure they knew what we wanted. Oh - and bring CASH. read more

I just got back from a late Lunch and have always had a great meal at Markey's. Today I had Clam Chowder and I had clams strips instead of whole clams this time. The Chowder was great and couldn't finish the Clam Strip plate there was so much food on it, It was crispy and not greasy. I was on my way out and someone had spilled a tray at the bottom of the stairs. I told the girls cleaning it up that I was OK and would wait until they were done. There was a gentleman at a table next to where I was standing doing paperwork, he pointed out that there was another door to exit. I told him I was going to order something else before I left and he asked what I needed, I told him a piece of cheesecake for desert to take home. Pitiful, Feeble attempt at a restaurant. I have no idea how they continue to stay open. i went with my wife and got the steamers, a fried combo platter, cup of chouda and the fried oysters. Seventy dollars later I have a stomach ace and I am staring into the trash can that I have just tossed the food into. This place has been around for a very long time. I recall a time when it was the place to go but that seems like a lifetime ago. The chouda was like dishwater and the fried food was so overcooked that it felt like battered rubber bands in my mouth. Catching up on reviews...was here last August 12th during vacation to east coast. They had 2 whole lobsters(1-1/4-1-1/2 lbs) for $21.99 only! What a bargain!compared to the fine dining. A very casual restaurant, you order and pick up and find seats. Ordered corn with our lobsters and oh boy!can't get enough of it!. Therefore on our last day, we had to go back to Markey's for last lobster treat! This time we had 2 orders - 4 lobsters total!!! YUMMMMMMMM!!!!! We also tried the clam strips and it was good too. Next time we'll try the lobster and crab roll. We drove 30 minutes from our hotel in Tewksbury, MA to Seabrook,NH! :) it was so worth it! read more

Interestingly, you have Markey's on one side of route 286 and Brown's on the other. Want to talk about friendly competition? I have been to Markey's several times but have not had the lobster although many people do get them and little-neck clams. They have lobsters of many different sizes in elaborate tanks with circulating water. I have had the clam strips, fried scallops, fried shrimp and french fries over the times I have been here. My mom had a lobster roll the last time I went and it had a bunch of knuckle and claw meat in it. The hot dog roll was packed so I would consider it to be a decent deal. I can say the food is so consistently good that I have never tried Brown's. Why do I need to if I found a place I enjoy? I don't find the fried food to be very greasy at all. The food is always made to order and hot and they call out your number when the food is ready. They have a decent size indoor seating area and a smaller outside section on the marsh. Some might say that the place is for tourists that are visiting the areas but the parking lot always has MA and NH license plates so I believe that the food is good enough that locals frequent it as well. read more

This was a really fun find; thank you yelp! I went here after a long hike, and this was a great stop... of course, we overlooked the fact that it was mother's day. The place was packed, but we still managed to find a table. The first thing you have to do when you get here is to have one person go claim a table. The other person heads up to one of the three counters. There's one for fried food, one for the Lobsters (and salad strangely) and a third for the Steamers. If you want steamers fries and a lobster, that means waiting in three lines... (and also minus one star for them) You walk up to the counter and place an order. For the lobsters, they actually bring your living lobster from the jumping tank up to the counter. You can see it being weighed and make sure its lively. They then drop it in a bag with a thick wooden handle that is hung in a giant boiling tank. They hand you a number, and 15 minutes later your lobster is ready. The steamers were done in a similar manner, except it only took a few minutes for them to be ready. For 11 bucks, you got a good sized bag. Still a bit pricey... but when you're going for freshness, and following it with a lobster... I suggest ordering the lobster first, then getting the steamers. You should be finishing them off just as the Lobster finishes being cooked. The Lobsters were pretty consistently awesome. The claws on one of them had started to atrophy, but when we got to the tail... best piece of lobster meat I'd ever had. The Prices weren't too high, or really a great deal either. 10.99 a lb for medium lobster (1.25-1.5lbs). The Salad (3.50) was mostly iceberg lettuce, however the blue cheese dressing was mostly blue cheese... so that made up for it. The fun part about this place is that its a great cross section of locals (there was a high school date behind us with 4 of their friends sitting at the next table making fun of them, and a family out for mothers day behind us) and tourists (a group of girls were by the counter with one of them having her picture taken with a huge lobster) from just about everywhere. Its a big place, but it does get crowded. I'd suggest going in the summer, and trying to get a seat by the deck. Its a nice view when the sun sets. Also, bring a bit of a group. This will really help with the having one person to hold your table, and people to hit the different lines. Good luck splitting the bill! read more

Excellent seafood and lobster. Plenty of seating inside overlooking the tidal pool. Prices are competitive with other seafood places. I ordered a Haddock Sandwich and it was huge. There is one line to order the fried seafoods and sandwiches; a separate counter for lobster and steamers, and then there is another counter to order beer and wine. I've also been to Brown's many times too. I feel Markey's has better fried foods. Browns doesn't sell alcohol but you're welcome to BYOB. You also order lobster and can tell the person at the lobster pool, what size you want. I've seen some pretty big ones come out of there...so those might be considerations if people are trying to decide beween the two. I like Markey's atmosphere -- for me, it doesn't have such a hectic feel to it. Service is quick and friendly. read more

YUM, this was probably the best fried shrimp I've had. I got the medium shrimp box. Very fresh. My daughter also got a lobster roll and loved it, and my mom got the fish and chips (it's not on the menu, but we asked for it). Fish was very fresh.
