Like so many of these Napa places, this winery has the telltale characteristics of contemporary Napa. Excellent grounds and an over the top building, nice ambiance, and crummy wine. We went to a wedding here, and they of course were serving their wine. I can't remember if it was Cabernet or Merlot, but it essentially was undrinkable and disgusting. The barrel room where the reception was held was awesome though. The waiters kept pushing the very nasty Cabernet, but there was a really good Syrah or some blend that they had which was realy good. We intially were turned on by this brand from a local restaurant in Dublin. It was a cabernet and we found it very good. We stumbled upon the winery after leaving the Castello di Amorosa Winery. It's a modern looking tasting area w/ a classic rock photo gallery. We had the $15 tasting, I think it was about 5 pours + a freebee dessert that our server threw in. We purchased The Altruist Cabernet Sauvignon for about $58 bucks, then walked around and looked at the photos (Jimmy Hendrix, Janice Joplin, etc.) ............. off to lunch. read more

My first trip to Napa and my friends and I decide to stop at Markham. I had never had the wine but the place was beautiful so we decided to take a chance. From the second we walked in we were treated like VIPs. Our extremely friendly and knowledgeable pourer was Steve. LOVED him! This is a late post. Dec last year I went on a spa birthday trip with some of my close family members. We did spa and planned to do wine tasting the next day. Due to the brochure of the place we stayed at, we were able to do free wine tasting at Markham wineries. Staff was nice and accommodating. They even gave us more wine to taste. Hands down to AMAZING customer service! They make you feel like right at home and not just a client. Not only did they call to see if we were on our way to our reservation, but also brought out an extra outdoor umbrella for a friend who was sitting in the sun, andddd provided a sweet wine for a few of us versus the red wine they offered. I loved this beautiful winery for its amazing building (inside and out), its history, but most of all because of the amazing wine. This place was one of my favorites on this second trip to the Napa Valley area. The staff was very kind and explained the history of the vineyard and the process they use for their wine. It is also very nice that some of the land on this winery had been used by the students at the Culinary Institute of America for their class. read more

The property at Markham is gorgeous. Also, when we were there they had the Rolling Stone Covers art exhibit up and that was really awesome to check out. But you're reading this for the wine, right? I was not overly impressed with Markham's wines. The pinot noir we tried was good, the syrah had some good spice on the front-end but no real finish to it at all. For the most part the server at the tasting counter just read us the description from the menu, poured the wine then left to do something else. So needless to say we weren't too impressed with the tasting, no real information from the servers which is half the fun of going wine tasting. Most of the reviews seem to say the staff was really attentive. I don't think we were there on a crowded day (there were only 2 other groups there and 4 people working the tasting room), so maybe it was an off-day? Also they don't waive the tasting fees even if you spend $100 on a bottle of wine, which I think is ridiculous. I think its definitely worth a trip here to see the grounds and the art. Tastings run $10, $15 or $25, so price is average for Napa. read more

Markham offers a couple of categories of wine tasting. We went with the $10 for 4 wines category since it included their merlot. My wife is a bigtime wine lover and loved the Cab. Personally, I'm not a fan - I'm a beer snob. Despite that, I still enjoyed Markham's tasting room. Their merlot is one of the few wines I actually like, and they had some very cool old Rolling Stone photos on exhibit on their walls. read more

Nigel at Markham is awesome! They were super busy + understaffed, but Nigel made up for it all. When we did have his attention, he gave us all his attention. He even took photos of us and recommended Hall (which we ended up LOVING). Even though the tasting was really, really expensive ($30 for the Estate, $20 for the Rock 'n' Roll) and not waived with purchase, we enjoyed sampling all 10 wines on the menu. First off, Markham is on a gorgeous piece of property. There are two parallel koi ponds that lead you to the entrance to the tasting room. It looks like a grand estate and is just as immaculate inside with paintings and sculptures to make you feel all classy and high-cultured while you wine taste. I wish the service matched the gorgeous setting. Our guy's name was Greg, I believe, and while he was very knowledgeable and told us a great amount about the winery and wine in general, he was a bit brusque. We had to pay for our tasting before we tasted. I feel like my friend was asked to pay just as he was about to taste the first wine. Was he really worried that we would taste and dash? My general impression was that, of course, we were here to buy wine and that this tasting was only a formality. It put me off. As for the wines, we had four different strong reds. Two merlots and two cabs. I might be uncultured, but I thought they all tasted the same. That being said, I enjoyed them all, I just couldn't differentiate. My friend really like the Altruist and did buy a bottle. Poor Greg did manage to redeem himself when he aided in our winery scavenger hunt and sent us to see Kim at Ballantine down the road with a card for a free tasting. read more

Markham was sort of a random stop at the beginning of a wine-filled day. I was like a kid jumping onto a new bike. I was not ready for what was to come along in the day. Markham was a good intro into it. On the outside, this beautiful facility undoubtedly caught my attention and drew me in. Inside, the tasting room has a fantastic art gallery, and it honestly feels like a wedding reception hall. I had no idea that this specific vineyard was more mainstream, but I should have caught the hint, as it was set on an extremely convenient location. It just felt very... California. In the context of wine, the grape-based alcohol varietals were fresh and had many nuances, but there was a little cross over with the exact profiles. I guess our palates were not quite warmed up yet (are they ever?), but the educated tasting guide sort of walked us through the tasting. It was a little more expensive than most, unfortunately. We got a tour of their barrel room. It was kind of a good intro into the nuances that are ingrained into an institution that cranks out popular wines and the like. read more

This place really only deserves 3 stars. I gave it 4 because the name Markham holds a special place in my heart. Anyway, the wine was pretty good. The man who was serving the wine the day I went was not very into the whole customer service thing. He did not seem all too interested in exploring the wine with us. He simply said what was in the wine and poured. There was no discussion to see what background of wine we had or anything like that. I bring this up because there was no one else in the tasting room! Beautiful grounds, but the interior kind of detracts from that with the 80's decor and architecture. Upon arrival we were ushered up to the bar just like everyone else that walked in, even though we had made an appointment for a private tasting. Service was average just like the wines. My wife and I visited Napa a few weeks ago to celebrate our 3 year anniversary. We found a 2 for one online and we had just visited a more touristy winery up the road. We stopped and the coupon had expired the day before, but they still honored it. Nigel gave us a basic tasting, but he also gave us more than that. He have us a Napa experience we would never forget. He asked about our traveling, he answered all of our newbie questions with no judgement, and he gave us recommendations for his favorite wineries to visit in the area. All of those suggestions made our visit amazing. Before you book a tour, stop by Markham Vineyards and get a tasting with Nigel! He's a young guy whose family raised him in the wine industry so he'll give you good recommendations. If he's not there, his coworkers are just as knowledgable and friendly. read more

We added Markham to our latest wine tasting trip based on reviews in Yelp and we were so glad we did. We arrived around 11am and were warmly greeted by all the servers. The tasting are done in a bar area around a semi-circle and an Art Gallery is just on the other side of the tasting area as well as on the second floor. The Art Gallery is NOT to be missed and it was an extraordinary compliment to the tasting itself as Markham has some great red wines. The place was not crowded at all at this time and we got to enjoy our wine tasting while exploring the art gallery and then coming back to the tasting area as many times as we liked to finish our tasting. This is the perfect way to enjoy wine as you strolled along the art work. The gallery is quite impressive. The wine is also excellent! I bought a bottle of the Cabernet Sauvignon known as The Altruist after the tasting! I'm saving it for a special occasion as it was that good Put this winery on your MUST VISIT list; you will not be disappointed! read more

We stopped in for a tasting on a quiet Wednesday morning. My wife and I had recently been introduced to Markham's merlot at a restaurant when friends selected a bottle (actually a couple) for dinner. By the end of dinner, I had made a mental note to visit their tasting room on the next trip to Napa. So there we were, in front of the tasting room, looking at their koi pond. We did a stand up tasting at the bar, which allowed us to wander around and look at the art as we sampled our pours. We could have done our tasting in the seated area in front of the fireplace but probably we would have just sat there. We decided on the Estate Tasting which was comprised of Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, the estate Merlot, Petit Verdot and The Philanthropist (their cab) with a couple extra pours off the Legacy tasting for side by side comparisons. Easily my favorite was the The Philanthropist as a couple of bottles came home with me. read more

Our day of wine tasting started with Duckhorn Vineyards, a great idea for us but tragic news for all the wineries that followed as none could come close to competing with Duckhorn. We wrapped it up at Markham and the server had the audacity to tell me that Duckhorn was their main competitor as I sipped on an average Merlot. Now don't get me wrong, it was a fine wine and at $25, it was far cheaper than Duckhorn's $85 price tag. That said, trying to suggest they are in the same league is similar to saying a VW bus and a Maserati Quatro Porte compete with each other since they both have an engine and four wheels. I really should give them 4 stars, though, because while we didn't buy any wine here, we bought a pretty darn cool wall clock to put in our loft. And the price tag on it was actually quite stellar: $125. So imagine the puzzled looks of wine tasters entering the establishment as they see me walking out not with a case of wine but a huge flat box which carried my clock. read more

Very nice winery. We stopped in here becuase of the art display mainly. They have a gallery of photos take at Woodstock and of various musicians. Being a musician myself I thought it was incredibly interesting. The fellow pouring was curt to the point of nearly condescending (I expected him to actually roll his eyes at any moment!). It was an unpleasant experience. Like Markham... One of the old school wineries of the area. I think 4th oldest (maybe I should google). Anyway Simple tasting room... Unpretentious... And helpful. Dig the koi pond in the front. Like their merlot ((sorry Sideways - your movie was wrong about merlot -- but thank you for help making the grape one of the most affordable))... also like the 1879 Red Blend... and the Petite Sirah was a nice surprise. Tasting is also affordable (20 dollar tastings) and 2-1 on their website (I think on yelp also) Wines also not horribly expensive like many wineries in the region. I visited Markham for a wine tasting for the first time on my birthday weekend. Our host was on lunch when we first arrived, and so we had another one for our first few wines. I enjoyed both of their enthusiasm and they were both very friendly. I loved the chardonnay and muscato, and ended up purchasing a bottle of the muscato (probably the best I've ever tasted, not too sweet, not too dry). Being a bit of a photography nerd, I enjoyed the photography in their Woodstock exhibit that was there at the time. The winery itself is beautiful and comfortable, and I always appreciate staff that's friendly, down to earth, and know their wine. read more

We stopped in at the Markham Vineyards and did a wine tasting. The staff are very friendly and courteous as well as knowledgeable. We tasted two whites and three reds. The staff explained the complexities of each tasting and made it that much more interesting. They had a lot of art hanging in the tasting area from a local artist and they were really good (prices were a bit on the high side, but that didn't detract from our appreciation of them). After a four month stay in Napa, Markham Vineyards was by far our favorite winery! We received a fantastic tour of the beautiful facility from Tyler (assistant winemaker), learning all about the history of Markham Vineyards and the winemaking process.
