Fairwinds is a hidden gem in Calistoga! It's a cozy, intimate jewel sitting on a hill a few feet from the road. I was here for the Paint & Sip event. One of the many reasons I'm writing this review. You don't want to miss this event. There's one more coming up in October. I arrived more than a couple minutes early. I was very apologetic. Of course, they didn't seem to mind at all. The friendly staff handed me a glass of wine. The man gave me a rundown of the estate and an invitation to wander around and explore. Side Note, they weren't even open yet and were busy setting up for the Paint & Sip event. The grounds are beautiful, intertwined pathways -- a spacious patio area underneath the trees high on a hill. I sat there sipping a chill glass of wine taking in the landscape. The area where the event took place was gorgeous. I thought the patio area was the spot for the event. But, oh no, the patio is beautiful and relaxing. But the event space... It's this gorgeous wooden structure like a Gazebo but bigger. Steps are leading you uphill under an archway to this opening of an outdoor space with trees, branches, and leaves hanging onto and all around the wooden structure and beams. During the event, we painted and sip a variety of red and white wines. A delicious lunch followed of cheese, meats, crackers, fruit and more wines, and wines. I have to brag on our Instructor, she was the best. She didn't give us an outline of a picture. She did tell us what we were painting. We were able to use our imagination. We all painting a house but each one of us had a painting of a different house, a different fence.... read more

I had such an amazing time here! With the fires going on & Covid, I was impressed with everything from start to finish. I was greeted with a glass of cold rosé on a hot day & got a little tour of the venue. I felt like I was royalty! Lol. It was empty & we were the only ones there which was a plus! My husband and I ventured out to this winery when we had our Calistoga wine passes. It's a small but beautiful location. They have picnic tables outside so you can enjoy some lunch before or after your wine tasting. Their Rose was a really nice way to start the tasting. I also really liked their Pinot, I can be a little picky with Pinots and there's was really nice, not too light. We also really enjoyed their cabs. Many of their grapes are sourced but I really enjoyed our tasting overall. I didn't know they have a cave so I'd love to come back and check that out, seems like they have more to offer than I saw in that moment. I'd definitely say to check them out. read more

Before taking the trip, I did an exhaustive study on the wineries we might visit in Napa Valley. This place hit all the buttons. Beautiful grounds, delicious wine, amazing views, and live music!! We had the pleasure of hearing The Rhythm Method 4 band. Three guys and a girl; and they all have amazing voices individually. The music was a wonderful pop mix, with a good amount of jazz fusion and blues to spice it up; and since Mr. E and I are fans of 70s - 90s music, we just kicked back and enjoyed! Some folks were so moved by the atmosphere, the wine and music, they got up and danced! With the $25 tickets for the concert we each got a complimentary glass of Rose that was so sublime, and the glasses as souvenirs. There is a cave on the grounds, and beautifully appointed tables with brightly colored yellow/orange umbrellas. There are tours available, and for a VIP upgrade, you can experience their five-glass Winemaker Flight paired with charcuterie. The live music can be heard all over the grounds, they have it amplified just right through the PA system - so if you want to take a stroll along the trails, the music will accompany you. It.is.just.so, so, so (add any adjective here - I'm truly running out of words for these places!) Highly recommend this spot, nestled along the Silverado Trail Road in Calistoga, CA. Five stars. My fiance and I visited Calistoga last month for my her birthday. It was my first time visiting wine country and Fairwinds Estate was our second stop of many over the weekend. Our experience at Fairwinds was incredible and was my favorite experience of the weekend (every experience was great so that says something). We were greeted by Colin at the front entrance and were lucky enough to land Riley as our host who escorted us through the tasting and grounds. Riley was really knowledgeable and a fun personality to be around throughout our Fairwinds experience. He treated us to a tour of the wine cave on the grounds too, which we did not expect to see at all and was a real treat. The next time we go we will definitely put a request in for him again. I enjoyed every wine from our tasting, which I can't say about every other tasting. Of the bunch I would highly recommend the Merlot. It easily took over as my personal favorite Merlot. read more

I had a great time at Fairwinds winery this weekend. The caves are an amazing venue, the band was excellent and the wine, personal service and attention from the staff was outstanding. I hope to return for future concerts and tastings. I don't normally write reviews but was stunned to see a one star review below which appears to come from a small party of self-entitled women who appeared drunk and were extremely rude and aggressive to the staff who despite all that went out of the way to see they had a good time. I was there and there was no wait for food at the times advertised which was excellent. They obviously had an axe to grind, do not know good wine or that if you drink too much of it you are going to get a headache later on! K read more

We went here because we were looking for a winery with a view. This was not it! Wines here are ok but nothing special. We didn't purchase any although there were plenty to try. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. That's probably the best part. With so many wineries to choose from, I wouldn't put this at the top of my list. read more

We toured Fairwinds with Platypus Wine Tours and were hosted by Kimball. Kimball was very knowledgeable. The selection of wines was varied and delicious. I enjoyed the Rosé best. Fairwinds is amazing! Its small, but definitely not too small. The cave is great, the outdoor space is gorgeous, and the staff is unbeatable. Rosie was the greatest and made it 10x better. We missed her the rest of the day at other wineries. We had a newly engaged couple and the staff so wonderfully set up a table with decor I shipped to them before we got there. A bunch of my friends went to Fairwinds for their Harvest Dinner, from beginning to end it was a beautiful experience. We had our first tasting in the tasting room. The gentleman behind the bar was super knowledgeable and explained all of the wines we were going to taste over the evening. We then took our glasses of wine out to the patio which boasts a beautiful view of Calistoga. It was a bit chilly but if it was not I could definitely see myself enjoying the scenery and relaxing. As we headed into the wine cave I was in awe! These big beautiful doors opened that led us into many rooms. We got to see the bottling room as well as the fermentation rooms. As you walk through the caves you feel transported into a different world. It is very romantic to wonder around with wine. When we got to the center of the cave we were greeting by a great band and a beautiful dining room that was candle lit and adorned with flowers. The dinner was coursed and paired with wine. The food was Devine. Before desert we went out to see the view from the other side of the cave and it was beautiful. Over looked wineries and mountains. You will NOT be disappointed at Fairwinds. I used to work at a winery in Upstate NY, so I'm quite familiar with wineries. This experience is a must if you are in Calistoga. We will definitely be there again. read more

Recently joined the Prowling Vineyard Wine Club which is a joint venture between the Carolina Panthers and Fairwinds. It is impossible to get customer service. When you call the supposed dedicated number for the wind club, you are put on hold for a couple of minutes, then the line rings twice as if you are being connected to a person, but it disconnects. Unacceptable for the money we are paying for this. read more

Loved this winery! It is small and cozy, and we had such a great, personalized experience here. There was a really great variety of tasting options (a couple of us did the classic and one of us did the reserve, all reasonably priced and generous pours). Our server Johnny was such a joy and super friendly. He explained the wines thoroughly and even gave us a private cave tour at the end! Would go back just for him! Repeating what other reviewers have said, but this winery really is a hidden gem. I am surprised more people do not know about it. The wines are superb, and it is worth visiting just to see the wine caverns that almost look like a movie set! Amazing service from our host Terry who was both gracious and accommodating, and a font of knowledge about the history of Napa and how wines are made. I now know more about the different soil types in Napa than I ever thought I would need to know! Update: Came back after a year and winery had a whole different vibe. I was truly amazed at this winery. I stopped by a few weeks ago. Staying in calistoga, we were looking to taste local wines. I was surprised to see the variety of wine they had. They had three tasting options, and were given a wine list with all wines offered. We were helped by a young gentleman named Steven . He explained that if there were varietals off menu we wanted to try, he was more than happy to help. We ended up trying all reds. Let me say they were amazing.Being a lover of Petite Verdot, theirs was to die for. We were given an extremely knowledgeable and interesting tasting. The best part was we were offered a tour of the wine cave, at no extra charge. Were in awe of the event room in the cave, and seeing all those wine barrels. We rented their cave for our wedding rehearsal dinner last month and they did an excellent job. What earned the 5th star was it was during the rolling power outages and they were running on generators. No one blinked -- everyone just went to work making sure everything went smoothly, which it did. The cave looked great lit with a combination of generator-fired and battery-operated lights, plus dozens of well-placed candles. We were never made to feel there was a problem, or that they had gone to any special effort, which they very clearly did. It was all extremely friendly and professional. Oh, and everyone definitely enjoyed their wines. Kudos. read more

I never write reviews, but I feel compelled to let people who are looking for a wine tasting experience know about my experience. I booked a cave tasting (tasting with cheese plate in their wine cave) for 8 ladies on a Tuesday afternoon. Upon arrival, the young man in the tasting room was surprised to see 8 of us for tasting as he said he only had a reservation for 4 (the cave tasting is done in pairs so when I booked with the manager she entered it as 4 pairs =8 people). I knew I had made the reservation so I asked him to please check again. The problem he said was that "I don't think we have enough food for 8 but let's start the tasting while we find out". At that point he started taking out wine glasses and placing them on the bar. I pointed out that I had booked a wine cave tasting which I thought meant we would taste in the cave. His reply was that "it would be too hard to bring all of the glasses up to the cave now... so we will taste here and end up in the cave at the end "(for a glass and the cheese plates -they said they thought they found enough food). I had organized this tasting and was somewhat embarrassed, I didn't want to argue so we started the tasting in the tasting room. The tasting started with him asking " who wants white and who wants red? Once decided he started pouring, it was a bit confusing (he was pouring different kinds of reds and whites) so I asked if he had a tasting guide for us to follow along so we knew what he was pouring. He pulled out one guide and gave it to me, but did not offer the rest of the ladies one. As we tasted, I realized there were no buckets in which to pour the wine we did not wish to finish. My 85 yo aunt reached over the bar and thought she was pouring into a bucket but it turned out to be something to hold paper...oh dear, how awkward. I would think that this would have been a signal that they forgot to put one on the counter, but no, I ended up pouring my post taste wine into another wine glass. After about 20 minutes he was ready to take us to the wine cave. It was a nice walk up to the cave, the grounds are beautiful. Once in the cave we saw four small wooden boards with cheese, nuts, dried fruit-a nice selection. We had each been instructed to bring a wine glass with us and into these he poured us a red. He then said he was going to leave us ladies to enjoy the wine and cheese and he would be back in about 20 minutes (this is when I thought we were going to be educated about their wine). He came back 20 or so minutes later and said he had one more red to share. He poured our wine and answered questions we asked, but very little if any education or promoting of the wines we had tasted. My impressions- 1. I think the young man at the tasting counter was a nice, but a bit defensive and rattled about our large party (there was no one else tasting in the winery at the time). After a few minutes he loosened up and tried to make the best out of the situation, but he seemed unprepared and uneducated about the wines he was pouring. 2. Not sure why there was a communication issue with the booking as I booked directly with the tasting room manager, Kimble 3. We were disappointed that the tasting was not done entirely in the cave as was described (and as seen on their website )when we made the reservations-it felt disjointed. 4. I was embarrassed that I had set up this experience as we were limited to doing only two wine tasting experiences on our trip(some of the ladies traveled from out of state for this northern Ca wine tasting experience.) I did a lot of research to find wineries I thought would be great experiences-this one fell short. 5. Some of the wines were good, but because of the lack of information given about the wines during our tasting-not one of us bought a single bottle. Isn't the point to educate and promote to sell the wine? 6. I spoke to the manager, Kimble,to let her know about our experience. I told her that despite the fact that we received their advertised "special two for one tasting"($60 for two instead of the normal $60/pp) that the $240 we paid was not worth the experience we received and did not match what they had advertised. I asked her if it was possible to get any kind of a discount/refund? She said no, she could not refund any money, but that she could offer us one complimentary tasting. I told her I wasn't going to be traveling to the wine country any time in the near future and asked if there was any other way to compensate. She apologized for our unfortunate experience and thanked me for calling to let her know, but said there was nothing more she could do. My advice- choose your wine tasting experience carefully, they are expensive and you want to feel as though you are getting what you paid for. Check out Failla, we had an awesome experience there. I gave one star for the cave setting and some of the red wine, I took four off for our disappointing experience. read more
