I'm going to be honest about my experience on my first visit. Due to the manager being a decent guy who did the right thing and just let us leave without a problem. Maybe we will try this place again someday and hope for and expect a better experience. The food was horrible. The service even worse. We couldn't eat what was brought to the table & decided to leave. We eat a lot of bbq around the world and certainly know what to expect. I'm not sure if it was an off day or what? Another great BBQ joint, what more can I say. Honey Wings are to die for, Pulled pork was good, little on the dry side for me, I like a little more juicy. Brisket was dry, but brisket is hard to keep moist for long, totally understand that so that's why 4 stars and not 5. Definitely an all around great place. The country store vibe of this place is really neat. Feels like you're eating in a cozy barn that doubles as a smoker, and, unlike a barn, the smell is smoky and terrific. The food is pretty amazing. The cook on the brisket and ribs were perfect, the baked beans were delightful, and the corn had an incredible sweet taste and crunchy (roasted) texture. On the other hand, the barbecue sauces had too much acidity, not enough sweetness, and too much chili powder and/or chipotle (not sure what, but the spice was too far in the front of the palette). The coleslaw was also runny and not sweet enough. These are just my opinions. Where this place shines, however, is the service. Terra took care of us and treated us right. One of the managers came to us and asked if it was our first time. We said it was. She proceeded to give us a coupon for our next visit and a FREE large bottle of barbecue sauce. Both she and Terra were warm, welcoming, and felt genuinely happy we were there. Oh, and if you go on Mondays, you can get a FREE dessert, which was phenomenal. (We got a "Crunch sundae" or something like that. Get it. It's good.) We'll happily go back and take friends. read more

Very solid BBQ establishment that's been around for quite some time. While it isn't my absolute tip top favorite, it's always consistent, and always good. The bird in a nest with honeywings is one of my go-tos and will not disappoint, especially if you aren't in the mood for a traditional pulled pork sandwich. I love Mark's. Best ribs in Louisville hands-down. I am also a fan of their lemon-pepper fried fish. Come to think of it, I have not had anything at Mark's that I am not a fan of. Sauces are all delicious (I love the red one!), and service is always above and beyond. What I particularly appreciate about Mark's is that they are consistent across multiple locations. Pretty descent bbq place in the highlands and In fern creek. I went the other day and got the grilled chicken breast meal with two sides. The bbq chicken was pretty good. It had a nice smokey flavor. The corn on the cob was fried and really good also. They put sugar on the sweet potato fries which makes them better than most imo. The atmosphere is kinda what you would expect from a bbq place just kinda plain. The meal was pretty cheap also I think $11 for two breast and two sides so that was a plus. The only other thing I've got from there is the honey wings and they are amazing also can't really judge the ribs or brisket or anything but need to try one day read more

Both the service and the food here were absolutely fantastic! We were lucky to get Maria as our server and she was very sweet and personable. Ask for her, you will receive excellent service! I ordered the pulled pork lunch special with Mac n cheese and sweet potato fries. The pork was tender and flavorful and the mac and cheese was so creamy and cheesy, it was incredible! My fiancée got a sampler with ribs, honey wings, brisket and pulled pork. I tried his ribs and honey wings, the ribs were so tender and the honey wings were crispy with a spicy sweet sauce. I asked the innkeeper where I am staying for a recommendation and she suggested Mark's. What a fabulous local place to eat! The minute we stepped through the door we were greeted warmly. Our server, Maria was great about suggesting food and drink items. I tried two of the locally brewed ales along with fried pickles as an appetizer. Maria gave me 3 different choices of BBQ sauce to try and asked me which one was my favorite. Once I made my choice, she presented me with a bottle to take home. I had pulled pork, potato salad, fried corn, the pork was perfection, so tender! The rest of the food was the perfect compliment to a very enjoyable meal. They do have an offer for free dessert on Yelp, but to my surprise...it was free dessert night... Who loves free dessert? This girl! The buttermilk pie was delicious! With a name like Mark's Feed Store, I was a little skeptical of quality. Would this be some laminate-covered, tray-wielding cafeteria set up where people ate as though from troughs? I didn't have high hopes to tell you the truth. But this place rocks! Its in this cute brick building, with old vintage signs hanging up and a very fun vibe inside. I was so glad I skipped lunch that day too because portions are VERY generous. We ordered the fried pickles because, well, you just have to! Fried pickles are ridiculous and crazy and downright delightful. Then I ordered a half slab of ribs. This came with a huge piece of toast and two sides. The coleslaw I got was terrible and I didn't eat it. But I am very picky about my coleslaw so don't go by my recommendation on that. I also got the baked apple, which was nice & sweet and complimented the sauce on the ribs nicely. Ribs are wet BBQ, and you have a choice of 3 sauces on the table to add more flavour if you want. The yellow one, which I think was mustard based, was the best. Prices were SO good for what we got. All this plus prompt, friendly service? ooh, that's dangerous. I've eaten at this location a few times. Once because I was visiting the area and crazing BBQ. Two other times because my co-workers enjoy it. I've had the pulled pork, pulled chicken, chicken, and ribs with various sides. Now Mark's advertises themselves as a BBQ restaurant. This sentiment is completely false. Of all the aforementioned meats, I have never tasted a hint of smoke. That being said, the food tastes decent. But when you're in mood for BBQ, Mark's will not hit the spot. It's baked. It's a sin to call it BBQ. The service has always been excellent at this location. One thing worth highlighting is the sides. The fried corn and apples are excellent as are the green beans and baked beans. Unfortunately for Mark, his delicious sides and great service aren't enough to net more than a two star rating. read more

I'd had Mark's a couple times at UofL when it had been catered. I love BBQ and am not that snobby about it, so I've always thought it was good. I picked it as a catering option over the holidays, but just got the main course. Hadn't made it in the store until today for lunch when a friend of mine suggested it. I think I hadn't appreciated how good it was until today - and now my mouth is watering as a write. I tried the cup of burgoo and chicken sandwich. The burgoo was thick, hot, and tasty! You have to try this regional favorite! I've had other versions, but this I wanted to keep eating it after I had finished. There is a small hint of heat, but the mix of savory and vegetables is just right! Yum! My pulled chick was delicious! I actually cut it in half and was full after the burgoo and half of the sandwich (should be noted I took the top bun off, too, to save calories). Bun was soft and chicken was moist. Comes with the original bbq (an organish yellowish medium bbq) and I added the "red bqq". SO GOOD! What really takes the cake (or pie), is the dessert - the Buttermilk Pie. I did not get any on this trip but have had it a few times...... you better get out your toothbrush because just thinking about it gives me a cavity! If you love butter and sugar, this is for you! I also saw a dessert I didn't know they had on the menu - oreo banana pudding (ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS PUT TOGETHER?) The menu stated free desserts on Mondays after 4, so you better believe I'll be headed back soon. Of which, I'll update my report, you know I will! Decor was country but not hokey and the location on Bardstown Rd makes it fun. The building itself is a unique layout and our service was pretty quick. I personally drink a lot of liquid during my meal and they had one of the biggest glasses I've ever seen for me to guzz some sweet tea. I'm sold. I love good barbecue. I like Mark's. Don't get me wrong or anything, it's good but it doesn't blow me away. There's better to be had in town, but for the price and convenience I keep coming back to Mark's. The brisket is tasty and the chicken while good, tends to underwhelm. I'm not much of one for the mustard sauce either, but that's me. I load up on the spicy red sauce and go to town. Sides are adequate and portions are generous. If you're looking for a quick bite, drop in and give it a try. They also cater. Personally, I'd never turn it down especially if it were free. Also, the buttermilk crunch pie is awesome, but I'm pretty sure it's responsible for a couple of blocked arteries. So, get two slices. Enjoy! read more

I fluctuated between giving this place a 3 or 4 stars. I love BBQ, it is the sort of food that when it is good, holy mole it is unbelievable! In honor of this love, I just couldn't bring myself to give this place more than 3 stars. Don't get me wrong --this is a good restuarant, even a great one, but hardcore BBQ lovers will find fault with it, unfortunately. I typically order the pulled pork sandwich platter with deep fried corn on the cob and their seasoned fries. More often than not, the pork is a bit dry. Not to worry though, this can be fixed with any one of their DELICIOUS sauces. This shouldn't be the case though. The pork should be the centerpiece of any true blue BBQ meal --one shouldn't have to douse it with sauce to improve the taste. However, like I said, the sauces are divine. They are really that good. The deep fried corn on the cob is my favorite side to get --next to the onion straws. Sweet, crunchy, buttery. A perfect side to pulled pork. The price, service, and even ambiance is unbeatable here. Perfect for a family dinner or lunch out. Despite my 3 star rating (based on authenticity more than anything else) I still highly recommend this place. read more

First off, despite the odd name Feed Store it is indeed BBQ. And pretty damn good BBQ at that. There is a large pig statue out front as the first indicator. The nice little patio tucked behind a few trees welcomes you in to what is clearly no longer a place where you pick up feed for your farm. The space has been recreated into a welcoming restaurant, retaining the high ceilings and exposed walls and beams. It has characteristics of an old barn, yet it is warm and unassuming. The first time visiting it just felt easy. Nice and open, grab a table, grab a bite. Great spot for a group or family. I prefer the pulled pork, but the chicken is also very good. It is the style that is more of the meat straight up, a bit smoked and flavorful, but where you put the sauce on yourself. And I like all the sauces. My go to is to mix the red and orange sauce. Yum. You do need to try them all to see what your thing is. Also, I was blown away that you can get an entire pound of pulled pork for 10 bucks. We got 2 pounds and had more than enough for 6 folks and took home enough for 3 more sandwiches. Every person was really pleased with their food and it was our cheapest meal of the weekend. (Fam visiting). I almost gave this 4 stars since I am hesitant to say something is as good as it gets, but you know, if it is, it is. I can't name anything I don't like about this place. The service is great and friendly. The takeout doesn't skimp and it is even good as leftovers. I am super sad that I don't live as close to it as I once did, but I still frequent. I ordered their deep fried corn on the cob, coleslaw and baked beans for my sides. The coleslaw was terrible, it could have been dressed with dishwater it was so flat and flavorless. The deep fried corn wasn't all that interesting and when I asked for butter for it, the waitress gave me a look like she'd never heard of buttered corn on the cob. When she brought me a few packs of country crock margarine, I gave up all hope. The pulled pork was ok. my homemade BBQ sauce is better. Their beans were good and that was about it. i really, really, just love it here. Honestly, the only thing I am mad about is that they serve fake butter with their sweet potatoes, but hey, we can't have everything, right? My favorite thing, and call me crazy I know with all of the other awesome things on the menu, but their chicken salad sandwich is the BEST thing to get for lunch. I love it so - more than their mustard BBQ sauce, and that stuff I could probably drink a glass of it is so yummy. We came to Kentucky for a business conference in July. We stopped here for a dinner with a group of 10. We sat outside and we're never forgotten! Our waitress was great and left us wanting to come back, not only for the food but also for the service. They say you should try a place twice to make sure it's good, well we came back. When it comes to Bar-B-Q one can become very fussy especially your finicky bear. so when my friend Brian mentioned this as a place he had chosen as top stuff I despite Brian having a good track record was in a "will see" mode. Brian hit it out of the park. I had many mouth watering choices brisket, ribs, and then some but when my eyes focused on the 'world's largest barb-b-q pork sandwich' as in 1 pound of pulled pork what's a hungry bear to do? Definitely do not ask the bride' permission (she was not with me, one of those what happens in Louisville stays in Louisville moments) so I gave into the temptation. Add in the fried corn on the cob corn and a election of 3 bbq sauces it was let the good eating times begin and 1 pound of pulled pork later I was a very happy bear. The going out the door on Mark's is I wish we would have got a second time while in Louisville so I could of devoured some poor little piggies rib cage but such was not the case but when I do return look pout little piggy. Oh just as an FYI I being an honest and faithful bear I could not keep my falling to eating more then I need of Louisville bar-b-q stay in Louisville I did confess to my lovely bride my stray from healthy eating. To be honest, I've struggled to find good BBQ in Louisville. Perhaps this has something to do with Louisville's regional identity crisis (being this close to Indiana sure does make it hard to convincingly pull off being "southern"). That all being said, Mark's is my go-to when I need a BBQ fix! A pulled pork sandwich is my standard with sauce on sauce on sauce (Original, Red, or Hot!). As far as sides go, I've got one friend who swears by the fried corn on the cob and another on the burgoo (which seems reminiscent of Brunswick Stew for those who aren't familiar with the name). **side note: just looked up burgoo on Wikipedia...and I'm gonna say that Mark's version is a verrrrry distant cousin of "roadkill soup" as it's endearingly called (I'm trying to say it's not questionable or gross). This past trip I noticed that the menu boasts Mark's very own root beer, so I tried it! Good stuff! Just a bottle worth for the price, but you do get a frosty glass to pour it in. A final tip -- the first time I ever went to Mark's (Dec. 2011) the waitress asked if I had ever been before and I said no...and she told me that if it's your first time you get to take home a free bottle of your choice of their BBQ sauce! Local BBQ gone commercial. First let me say that I prefer Franklin Avenue Beer Depot BBQ (FABD) to Mark's Feed Store. That being said, this is still a great place to get your BBQ fix. What I like best about Mark's feed store is the BBQ combination meals. You can get a little sampler of all things BBQ depending on your desires or you can just go with the pulled pork sandwich classic. My problem, as you may read in a lot of my reviews, is commercialism. Mark's has a great location, a solid menu, but there is nothing small and local about it outside of its address. Their meat is really not that seasoned and the sauces are not that different from your corner grocer. I have given this place multiple chances, but for some reason I just can't wrap my bun around it. read more
