I get the chili cheese dog with onions. The hot dog has a nice pop to it and the chilli with cheese pairs well with it. Wish I took a pic but I devoured it. The service was friendly and quick. We come here for nostalgia and for delicious, old fashioned hot dogs. My favorite is the sauerkraut dog and chili cheese dog. Generous toppings and I get full from eating just one. Friendliest service in the East Side of San Jose. I feel like this is a place that IYKYK, if you're not from ESSJ you're most likely not going to appreciate it. My bf said everything was mid to him. He said the flavor was lacking and the chili cheese on the fries was not even cheesey. This place is a win for me and takes me back to my childhood of simpler times and classic hot dogs. I grew up in Oakland maybe 3 blocks from a Casper's. I live in San Jose now for 22 years and have always driven to Castro Valley or San Leandro to enjoy a Casper/ Kasper hot dog. I learned from Atlas Obscura that this is one of the last places in California where you can visit a functional roadside orange. Seeing that it's so close to where I was visiting, I knew that I had to go. You have the option of pulling up and waiting in your car for your order to be delivered to you or going up and ordering from the workers there (who were friendly and upbeat with fast service). The seating is outdoor picnic tables but there's a roof above so there's shade, no worries. We got the: 1) Orange Float: -This is their orange soda with a hearty scoop of vanilla ice cream. They fill this all the way to the top, so just make sure you don't fizz it everywhere and spill on yourself. -Can never go wrong with the classical orange creamsicle taste. 2) Sauerkraut Dog: -Comes drowned in sauerkraut and we got this with some mustard, can't go wrong with this classic combo. 3) Chili Cheese Dog: -Again, hearty portion of toppings. It was drowned in chili and cheese. The chili had the perfect depth of spices (not spicy) and flavor, made perfect with the gooey-ness of the cheese. 4) Dill Pickle: -Not too sour and had the perfect crunch. -Refreshing palate and texture cleanser between hot dog bites. Can't go wrong with a good hot dog and seeing a piece of history is just another cherry on top. read more

My gf and I have lived in the Bay Area for all of our lives and we had Mark's Hot Dogs for the first time. Yknow with the age of $1.50 hotdogs from Costco it's kind of hard to ~not~ compare with the prices from here. It was around $10~ for a sauerkraut dog. It's definitely better than Wienerschnitzel, but at that price it's kind of insane. The hotdog quality was good and serviceable, the chili cheese fries were also very good. My only complaint would be pricing but otherwise this was a cool spot to eat lunch at. read more

I was looking for a good hot dog place that had car hop service and saw Yelp reviews of Mark's Hot Dogs at 48 S Capitol Ave, San Jose, CA 95127. I was intrigued by the the the claim it had been in business since 1936. Upon arrival, I noted the giant orange building which has been around since 1926, usually found in the past on Highway 99, selling fresh squeezed orange juice, lemonade, and other items. I arrived with my wife and found a parking spot and turned on my headlights to attract the car hop, who was very busy with customers. After a few minutes, he took my order. He was very polite and had a great cheerful attitude. I ordered a kraut dog with mustard, a chili and cheese dog, and a dog with relish, onions and mustard. I also had a vanilla shake and oreo shake. The food came after awhile and I was not disappointed. The hot dog was a foot long and looked and tasted like the dogs I got in New York from the street carts, including the skins. Absolutely outstanding and the condiments on the dogs were fresh and tasty. The chili tasted home made with big chunks of beef and whole beans. As for the milk shakes-just like I had from the soda fountains I use to visit as a child. Hand made from real ice cream and milk. Absolutely Delicious! I took a walk around the grounds and found everything well maintained and clean. The highlight of the visit was taking a peek inside the giant orange. What a meticulous restoration of a piece of San Jose History. This is not a discount hot dog stand so expect to pay a bit more. However, what you get is well worth the price. I have two problems with this place, I'll gain weight if I keep eating here and the hours it's open is very limited. Other than that, this place is amazing. The hotdogs here have snap and each bite makes you wonder why there's even a Wienerschnitzel nearby. Their chili cheese dogs are delicious and go well with their floats. A nice combination of savory and sweet. I always want to order more from their menu, but always default to the usual order. This place is oddly easy to miss, but easy to recognize due to the odd giant orange on the side of the road. The area itself is rather simple. It's just a parking lot, a couple aluminum picnic tables, and the orange. You can order and eat from your car, or you can sit at one of the picnic tables. Food's good, I definitely recommend it. It's one of the most genuine things leftover from old SJ. The hot dogs, they serve here are some beefy dogs and have a great snap to it. It has that classic American flavor that is rarely seen. However; I ordered a chille dog with no cheese and got cheese. It's okay. Service here is really friendly and nice, they take care of you here and feels like it's a welcome feeling each time. Parking is a bit small, and the music came straight of 00's. It's a clean area, it's a quick grab and go place. It a bit weird you order, wait, pay and then get food. But, it's not the first time. Ok for the old school East Side San Jose kids this place is so nostalgic - I remember coming here all the time as a kid. It looks exactly the same but cleaner! They really cleaned up this place very well. I only came here for a root beer float which was amazing made just perfectly. My friend did get a hot dog and it smelled and tasted just like I remember! I thought service was super fast however I did come here close to closing and it was crazy the poor server was jumping from car to car trying to get everyone on their way.
