I'd been having recurring cylinder misfires for months. I'm no stranger to mechanical work and did…read moreeverything I could think of to resolve but needed another eye on it. We're 40+ mins away from the nearest BMW garage so I found Mike's Auto which is within 10 minutes. They specialize in import repair according to their site so I brought it in for a diagnostic. I just needed to know what they thought caused it and could probably do the repair myself. I'd already done turbos, O2 sensors, ECU, throttle body, Vanos, etc. The guys were very accommodating but communication was poor, I had to call for any updates or to find out they needed me to authorize a repair. Three weeks and $1800 later I pick up the car and don't even make it a mile before all the misfires come right back. This, despite their assurances that it was test driven multiple times. Right back I go. A week later I'm now told a catalytic converter was plugged and causing faulty readings for air/fuel mix, creating misfires. It made sense, the tech even sent me a video showing his gauge reading. He was confident. Cats were about the only thing I hadn't changed. They estimated 8-9 hours book rate so I took it home and installed some brand new cats myself (3 hours real time.) Car made it several miles this time before the same error messages appeared. So, the diagnosis was still incorrect. I won't be bringing it back. The guys tried hard but it's clear they don't possess any specific import knowledge or experience that will help me out. I've wasted $1800 to get back where I was a month ago, but with a pair of shiny new cats now. They're probably fine doing standard work like suspension or oil leaks but anything more complex seems beyond them.

DANGEROUS BRAKE WORK - AVOID HUNTERS…read more Dropped off my project Jeep in APRIL for new brake lines. Picked it up in June. Shop said some air in the lines is expected and will work out, and they can rebleed. Car was dangerous, foot went to floor. Brought back. Picked up today and inspected the brake lines. Looks like a circus rollercoaster - the line is running OVER the valve cover, the line in back goes in a LOOP, and none of it is secured. THIS IS DANGEROUS. STAY AWAY - DO NOT GET BRAKES DONE HERE!!! After…read moretwo misdiagnoses They replaced the engine. there was a fire under the hood three days after the car was picked up. This was caused by a short circuit in the alternator plug. First, my son was told the alternator bearings were bad and the heat had caused the fire. When we ran the car with no heat or vibration on the alternator we were told that the bearings were bad when they checked it. The discussion ended with the proprietor telling us that if we did not have 100% proof that the plug was damaged in his shop that he was under no obligation to work with us on the alternator replacement. After showing the car to another auto tech we were told that we had been overcharged for the engine replacement by about $1500.
