I usually prefer TJ Maxx over Marshalls, but in this case, the Marshalls at Pentagon City has definitely won me over. Since I now work in Arlington, I visit both this Marshalls and the nearby TJ Maxx pretty often, and I've consistently had better luck here. I've come across some really great finds at this Marshalls, from wardrobe staples to little unexpected gems. On the flip side, I rarely find much worth grabbing at the TJ Maxx in this area, which always surprises me given how much I typically love that store. Selection & Finds: This location always seems to have a solid selection, and the inventory feels more thoughtfully stocked compared to the TJ Maxx nearby. I've walked out with some really good finds here on multiple occasions, which keeps me coming back. I do wish they carried more workout gear, especially things like weight lifting gloves, since that's one category where the selection feels a bit limited. Store Experience: One thing that really stands out is how neat and organized this Marshalls is. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I walk in and don't feel like I have to dig through piles just to browse. I used to shop here almost daily. I spent more than I should have. I resisted getting their credit card just to keep myself in check. Today that tug of war is over, thanks to one employee of this place. It was 3 minutes before the shop closing, a man was walking in. An associate stopped him said they were closed. He said he was just going to grab something real quick. I overheard this, thought it had nothing to do with me. I understand no one wants to work overtime. Now it was 2 minutes before the shop closing. As the associate was walking towards where I was, the women's clothes section, I was walking towards the door to leave. She saw me and she said to me, "ma'am you have to leave." At that moment I realized who I was to her - an intruder. I can't promise I'll never come back. I had an upsetting experience at Marshall's today that I feel needs to be shared, not just for myself but for others who may have similar struggles. I came in to return two tops (both size XS), and as I handed them to the cashier, she looked at me, smiled, and said, "Too small, huh?" and smiled again. I was caught off guard and honestly hurt by the comment. I struggle with body image and body dysmorphia, and unsolicited remarks like that -- even if meant jokingly -- can be deeply harmful. Comments about someone's body, clothing size, or appearance should never be made in a customer service setting. What might seem like a small or lighthearted comment to one person can be very triggering for another, especially someone with trauma or ongoing mental health challenges related to body perception. Marshalls is hit or miss. This location is near Pentagon City Metro. There is a strip mall and Pentagon City Mall within a block of each other. There are usually one or two gems in the store. I have stumbled across a pair of slacks or hair products after finding mostly disappointment. Marshalls used to be a really fun store. Now it seems like the inventory just leftovers from other stores. The register line can be long during the week or weekend. There are usually only one or two cashiers. More registers could be added if employees weren't visiting with each other. read more

There's always a deal to be found at Marshall's! This location is large and always clean and well organized. The selection is large and if there's something you need, you can probably find it here, and at a good deal too! From clothing to shoes to household goods and even snacks. Lots of seasonal and holiday items as well. I like that there are always clearance displays to go through - the best is when they have yellow tag clearance items! The kids section here is great and they have lots of toys and books as well. The lines for the registers are almost always super long but they move surprisingly fast. No complaints here! read more

I actually came in here hoping they had a pet section because I needed a kitty litter scoop. Aside from a sad little add-on item area by the registers with some pet toys, they do not have an actual pet section. BUT, they do have a home section with a ton of miscellaneous stuff, and I found a spatula/large kitchen ladle I can use to... improvise. I also walked out of here with a cheap af Yankee Candle (not the fancy type in the jars, but still) and a pretty nice water bottle. It was kind of like Target in that you go in for one thing and you're probably going to leave with more than that thing. The selection overall didn't seem terribly extensive, but was interesting enough that I'd stop in again to peruse the aisles for some more unnecessary discounted stuff. read more

This is my go-to department store for clothing and kitchen goods. They don't have everything but whatever they have is less expensive than at other department stores in the area, so this is the best place to try first. It's less expensive than the Target at Potomac Yards, which is the closest counterpart in the area, and it's much less expensive than the pricy department stores across the street at the big Fashion Centre mall. Marshalls also has a good selection of shoes, which most department stores don't. The biggest drawback is the long line at checkout, so it's better to go in the morning than the afternoon. read more

There used to be a time when you could shop here and get a really good deal. The pricing now is more like Macy's rather than discount. The clearance items are all way over priced. To begin, I'm normally a huge fan of Marshalls! Loyal fan! However, I was disappointed with this location. I was in search of a pair of cute flats to continue my exploration of DC and its local areas, and spotted this Marshalls across from Fashion Centre in Pentagon City. It's a fairly decent sized Marshalls but from the moment you walk in, it feels overwhelming.. like there may be too much in too little space. So I headed for the shoe department and was instantly frustrated. Shoes were disorganized: sizes not where they should be, pairs of shoes separated, and different price tags on one pair of shoes. In any case, after walking around and sifting through a pile of boxes, I was able to locate a pair that I thought would suffice. One shoe was marked $29.00 while the other was marked $32.00-- Same shoe style, same size, one was the right foot, the other the left foot... Overall, the store was very disorganized, the lines are incredibly long, and service is not at its best (couldn't find anyone aside from the attendant in the fitting room). read more

Let's say customer service is here pretty terrible. And whole store looked messy. So I was trying to returned 2 things without receipt but new with tags and lady at the register, I think her name was Yanise, told me I can't accept it without you having US ID. I showed her my International Passport and I told her that I can give her my address if that what she needed. But she was pretty rude about it, made me feel like I couldn't understand what she was saying. So I asked her to call the manager but he wasn't much help himself. He made different excuse that tags were really old and he couldn't except it, what a nonsense. I bought those 2 things for baby shower not long ago, I returned many things before and it was never a problem but the way this store treat their customers is unbelievable. Usually marshalls makes me happy, this location makes me very very sad. I'm always fooled by the awesome shoe display, only to find that they only have size 6.5 left. Also the fitting room attendant always looks pissed and the ladies working the check out are always super angry. I watched a girl get denied a refund on a coat because she didn't have a receipt and a button was missing. You wouldn't see this go down at Neiman's :) It was seriously stressful to watch the cashier and customer yelling at each other. As I felt my blood pressure rising I decided to ditch my purchases and get out of there. Apparently good deals warrant bad customer service. Let me explain how seriously I take customer service and how this Marshall's was the complete opposite of my expectation. I went in to return some clothes, please note that I think this is becoming a Marshall's characteristic, and not only did the entire endeavor take an unnecessary 25 minutes, it wasn't even the line that was the hold up. I can promise you that customer service was not part of professional development for this store. The woman inspected each item of clothing, although the tags were clearly attached to each piece. She even went to the hem of the one dress to inspect it in front of me. Shockingly, I didn't lose my cool, I just stared at her AND her manager, who literally took 18 minutes ( 7 was for the line) to go through each item and SCRUTINIZE it to ensure that I did not wear it. It was almost too rude to be real. Again, it's not like the tags were missing, they were right there! All this to say, this is the second time that I have been treated as such at a Marshall's and I think it means that my time at Marshall's may have come to a close. Work on your customer service Marshall's because you're making it extremely easy to pick other options, if only to not deal with your sub-par customer service. Shame, shame, shame. read more

You need to be in the mood for Marshall's, that's all I can say. That is, you need to be prepared to dose yourself with antihistamines and kick up some dust when snuffling through the racks and racks of some truly insane clothes in order to find the good stuff. It's like when you drop your engagement ring in the toilet---gotta shift through a lot of sh*t to find the gem. However, persistence pays off. My best find was a Badgley Mischka Platinum Label silver brocade shift dress with origami sash from, I'm guessing, the Spring 2007 collection (purchased Spring 2008), MSRP $595, Marshall's price, $150. I always forget about Marshalls, but I'm so glad I remembered them on a rainy day when I was looking to buy a few new dresses at a cheap cost. I really don't like maternity wear, nor am I really that big yet, but most of my clothes are starting to get tight around my tummy and I wanted to get a few less restricting items without spending a ton of money. Insert: Marshalls. I tried on about 9 different dresses and tops and ended up purchasing 4 or 5 of them plus a pair of workout leggings for around $65. I thought I scored a pretty sweet deal! I took a browse around both the home good section and baby section and found the home good section to be really well-curated, while the baby section needed a little bit of help as it looked kinda sad. I normally do not enjoy shopping at Marshalls or similar stores because they are so disorganized and cluttered and I get frustrated having to dig through mismanaged racks, but I had a relatively easy experience here, and would certainly return the next time I am needing larger than usual (for me) clothing at a decent price. read more

I don't shop department stores anymore, except online. Why bother when TJMax and Marshall's offers the best of all worlds at great prices? Went yesterday with a budget in mind, and in a really good mood so I could handle the jammed aisles and long lines of bargain shoppers. Spent 1/2 hour in the purse aisle -- where else can you buy a "Juicy" purse for $70?? Ended up with two purses cos the fall sales were great! Headed over to the almost overwhelming shoe selections -- soooooo many great women's shoes. Got a gorgeous pair of knee high suede boots with rabbit hair trim for only $50. Yup, this place has the best prices. The dress selections are many this season, and I got four for an average of $35 each -- beats department store prices all around! Beware the smart marketing technique of all kinds of trendy knick knacks, books, perfumes and chatchki's cleverly stacked along the way of the long long cash register waiting lines. It's easy to pick up a box of $6 biscotti cos they looks so great! Service is ok, if a little slow cos the checkers are yacking with each other a bit too much, but you gotta reduce the boredom some way, eh? Oh, and there's validated parking for the first hour...but, if you are like me, you end up paying $2 cos you just couldn't get out of Marshall's in less than an hour! read more

Despite fact I've had to replace my bank accounts thanks to Marshall's and all they offered in return was the possibility of getting a coupon one day, the deals are good enough that I'll still shop there if I'm nearby. This one's dirtier than most Marshalls and less selection with men's clothing. A Steve Harvey brand tie? No thank you. They do have a lot of suits here which some Marshalls don't carry. A 100 yard walk from the Metro but the one by Tyson's has a better selection. Also if you go at any normal hour, the line here is unbearable. Macy's has so many sales that it's usually as cheap and they actually have your size. So unless you happen to be at Pentagon City anyways, there's no need to go out of your way for this one. Oh yeah, they share a lot with Costco, which is unbearable. So either Metro or park across the street at the mall. read more

Location: Pentagon Centre Across from the much more popular Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, in the same lobby as the now-defunct Linens 'n' Things and Best Buy, this is definitely a poor cousin kinda store. The lighting does terrible things to your face. Clothes are falling off their racks. The floor seems dirty. Merchandize -- especially shoes, skincare, writing stuff, undergarments, and food items -- seem jumbled together. Lately, everything seems to be running low in stock, and whatever's left is falling apart. The overall impression is of untidyness and depression. I've been in Walmarts that have done a better job of tempting me to spend money. Worst, the line to the register is long, and takes FOREVER. Employees worked at a snail's pace. Once you are sucked in, it ALWAYS take at least ten minutes before you can emerge to freedom. Sigh. But for its convenient location (across the street from Pentagon City Metro Stop), it would not draw half as many customers as it does. But still, what a waste of a great location! read more

Ok, for a chain store in a mall this is the bomb Marshalls. I usually don't like places like this because I'm obnoxiously picky and like to be able to find something I like in my size and not have to find something I like but never in my size. Whatever, these are my issues. But I needed cheap sunglasses to fight off the winter glare, and so I found myself walking into Marshalls. Surprise! It wasn't an overwhelming mess of crap on the floor and out of place! Even the sunglass rack was neat and orderly. I was able to grab something I liked, see the price, and proceed to the cashier with ease. No tripping over crap on the floor. I give these guys a big double thumbs up for keeping it clean and still well-stocked. Their shoe section looked impressive, too. I'll be back. read more

This is way better than the Columbia Heights one. Much more organized, more selection, and better quality stuff. My BF and I like coming here for fun sometimes after a trip to Costco for food to kill time. They have a random assortment of electronics that can sometimes give be a good find and home/kitchen stuff that's cheaper than what you would normally pay for elsewhere.
