What made this experience so good in here was the fact that I already knew exactly what I wanted/needed. All I had to do was locate that section in this store and then locate the item. Walking in here was mostly like any other Marshalls location. You just need to spot the department and head that way. Of course, the section I needed was all the way in the back of the store and I had to dodge a lot of people to get there. There was no straight line in getting to this section in the least. Finding the department and then the section was the simple part. Rummaging through all the prospects of items was the hard part. I was in luck as I found exactly what I was looking for. And well all know how much of a feat that is in one of these types of stores. In fact, I was able to find two of what I needed and just took them both. Then came the checkout line. How is it that people forget what personal space is when it comes to standing in line? The lady behind me was so close to me with her cart that I'm sure if I was walking she would have clipped my ankle. Then there were the registers themselves. Seeing how long the line was you would have thought they would have been going full steam on the registers. But it was like dominos falling slowly, when one customer was done, that employee would close their line and move on to another task. Luckily not all registers closed, but it took a hot minute to get out of this store. read more

Being from Massachusetts, I am a lifelong shopper of good--and some not-so-good--discount stores. Together with my late mother ("Ma") & late grandmother ("Bubbe"), our trio formed a formidable battalion of Jewish bargain hunters--and women shoppers in general. I'm at least the 3rd generation of family shopping addicts. Most importantly, I've carried on as a loyal & unshakeable fan of the TJX Company, owners of TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Homegoods & other jumbled and disorganized stores. That's part of the adventure, mind you. If you are patient and forgiving, where else could you find a perfect pack of unbroken, uncrushed Dutch cookies-- and for a bargain $3.99 (original price $15.99!)-- discovered in a bin in Lady's Lingerie? I know some people strongly dislike these stores, e.g. they kvetch about the mess, the missing and broken pieces, the fingerprints on the picture frame. The torn and crumpled children's overalls mixed in with lady's clearance sweaters. The $125 scuffed handbag with a ripped handle. But bear with me, ladies and guys, while I point out the strong points. Adventure! Something nice for virtually nothing! Top of the line beauty items, like French soap for a song! Designer silk blouses for $15, not the usual $65! Okay, some of the treasures need repairs, and maybe a good cleaning. But that's the point of bragging rights. When a coworker asks, "Where did you get those those boots? Tres chic!" You can say, "oh these things? I love Saint Laurent, but he's so expensive! I was thrilled to spot them in a clearance bin! But I really can't remember where they're from! You know I love those bargain stores, and they all kind of blend together after a while..." read more

Brought the grand here so she can pick up some items. There is parking below ground and the store in my opinion the store is a bit tight. Not all Marshalls locations are created equal, and this Marshalls frankly doesn't stack up to the ones in the suburbs. The selection of clothes, shoes, or other items isn't nearly as good as the one in Pentagon City, for example, or other locations I've been to. If you have a car or time, I'd really recommend going there for your shopping instead. There are also very long lines at this location -- it would benefit from having more staff during rush-hour times. The shoes are very disorganized also - staff should keep that section better organized. Once in awhile you can still find a good bargain in suits or other clothes, though. It is convenient to have in the neighborhood, however, so I hope they stay open. read more

Interestingly, this place is much less crowded then the ones out in the burbs of Nova. And I've noticed that Marshalls are always cheaper than TJ Maxx's. So, if you don't mind metroing to your discount shopping, I'd suggest this place. Checkout line was a bit long around noon on a Sunday, but, that's typical. Only down side is you can only bring 5 items into the changing room at once. And I think some people had to actually wait for a changing room. read more

My standards for Marshalls is already low, but they're not even trying at this one. You know a store is ghetto when, instead of a plastic card with a number, the fitting room attendant gives you a piece of white paper with a number written in magic marker. Then she had the nerve to take the clothes out of my hand and go through them to make sure I really had three items. I don't mean "count them." I mean literally put her hand up the inside of the shirt to make sure I wasn't hiding extra clothes inside. The selection for guys is just 'okay.' I'd rank it above Yard Sale but slightly below Thrift Shop. There's a home section. Nothing in it, but the section is there. I think they just picked four pairs of shoes at random to have in the shoe section. The more I think of what's in the store, the meaner my review gets. I'll stop now and sum it up by saying that I'm not going back there. read more

I thought I had walked into a flea market where a bomb had exploded when I graced through the front door of this location of Marshalls. What an unkept disaster this was with a very poor and very limited selection of merchandise and looking for anything here you may have wanted to purchase, with clothes thrown everywhere and merchandise being replaced on the wrong racks, was like coal mining looking for a diamond in the darkness with a blindfold on your eyes, just not a pleasant shopping experience for Shoemelda. So, to shop here you really would need trucks loads of time and patience which is something I do not have!! This place is too messy, too junky and just too much of a wreck!! read more

I was wrong. This Marshalls isn't any better than the rest - it just had me fooled for the first few months. I just went in today and was totally overwhelmed. The sections are all moved, don't make any sense and the winter coats were all out of size order. (I know. It's Marshalls. But when that's what is selling right now you think that would be a priority section for them to take care of.) On top of it all, half the times I go in and pick out some items I end up leaving them in the store because the line is always atrociously long. Either they have to hire more people or get more efficient people cause they lose about $50 in sales from me on a regular basis. I have a love-hate relationship with Marshall's. I love it because it's close to my house and I cannot resist looking through brand-name, colorful clothing for low, low prices. I love that merchandise changes all the time and the variety of items is pretty large. Their bedding and useless tchotchke departments are something special. However, what I hate is that this store seems to cater to a specific demographic with specific tastes. I'm a fan of inexpensive well-made jeans, but not when the back pockets are so laden with glitter and embroidery that my ass is rendered bulletproof. This marshalls has gotten progressively better over the years, not just in their merchandise, but in the overall cleanliness if the store and the friendliness of the staff. This place gets super busy, especially between 6 and 8, so to avoid the lines, I definitely recommend coming at off peak hours. It's located on the main floor of DC USA, post the models, I'm the very back of the building. It's not hard to find. They offer men's, women's and children's clothing as well as shoes, accessories and home goods. This specific location is very hit or miss when it comes to clothing and shoes. They always stock a ton of athletic gear which is great if you've forgotten something and are looking to head to the gym upstairs. I definitely recommend looking here before going upstairs to target, especially if you're in the market for kitchen goods... Chances are marshalls has a better quality product at a fraction of the price. This particular location does not have a bathroom. But fear not, the target right up the stairs does. If you didn't find what you wanted on this visit, make sure to come back. Their selection changes every day and new sizes are ways being restocked. read more

I only go to Marshall's for three things: $5 Washington Nationals fitted New Era baseball caps (seriously); $3 Under Armour socks; and ties. Even if I came in for something different, it's not like I would be able to find it. I am unable to determine if the discount clothing store has been affected by the widespread recession or not. The children's books strewn on the floor, the discount David Spade movies perched gingerly atop mannequins, the women's underwear hanging from a fedora in the men's section: I don't know whether it's the frenzied shopping of the customers that causes the chaos, or the apathetic employees. It's Marshall's. You aren't going in here expecting Nordstrom-like customer service, but asking where to find boxer briefs (and now you know... ladies...) should not be met with a sucking of the teeth and a dramatic finger point. OH! There they are! Right underneath the piles of discarded teddy bears and sports jerseys. How could I have missed them?! Still... 3 stars for the prices and the rare gems that can be found with a bit of searching. Perhaps if the store kept itself presentable, the clientele would follow suit. read more

This Marshalls is by far the worst in the DC area and I have been to all of them. Here's why: Terrible organization: I find infant clothing in the candle aisle. I find women's shoes in the men's shoe sale section. I find size 32A bras in the 40DD bra area. Hand soap in the shampoo section, sizes L and XL in the S and M sections. It's constant. Damaged products all over the place: There is broken glassware, toys with missing pieces, opened packages of food, etc. Uncommunicative and untrained staff at the registers: I literally could not understand what one woman was saying. I had to ask her to repeat herself numerous times and I never ultimately understood what she was trying to convey. Constant theft: I can't tell you how many times I have seen unboxed items laying around with components missing that were clearly stolen. If you browse the tech section up front you will see dozens of phone case boxes without phone cases in them. Someone needs to pay better attention to the theft that occurs in this store. read more

Given that it is a store in the city, it can definitely be messy and clothes can be at mild disarray. Even Target has aisles that are empty at times! Get over that and start digging because you can find some really good stuff if you are willing to look. It is crowded on the weekends, so if you can get there earlier (before noon) on the weekend or have a weekday free, you will have a less overwhelming experience. Don't expect much help from the people that work there either. I would take it down a star but given that it is a discount store, do you really need help? The point of the store is that some stuff will randomly be there one day and not the next. The pentagon city Marshalls is nicer, cleaner, and less overwhelming, but this location is very convenient if you live close by. For prices like these, it draws you in! read more

Imagine what would happen if the trash heap from Fraggle Rock had a D&C (abortion). That is what this place looks like. Absolute HELL. I mean, seriously, of all places that should have ugly sweaters, this should have been it. But frankly, I couldn't find a damn thing since there was no rhyme or reason on how crap was laid out here. Snow shoes in the sweater section? Girls clothes on a rack in the men's section? A santa suit in the sport jersey rack? Wow. I mean, f@#$ing wow. It's worth noting service at the registers with Konjit? wasn't great, but up until check out, the one hour or so I was in there was pretty awesome. I saw clearance signs everywhere and lots of nice sweaters, from cashmere to wool $29 and up. I saw an amazing Theory blazer for $69 and some beautiful wool sweaters from Ireland. More impressive was the handbag section which I had written off and then as I wandered around, I was surprised to see Marc Jacobs and Kate Spade, the most expensive being $250. You have to dig for things and be careful to inspect your items. While items were on clearance, some had holes or were dirty but they weren't glaringly so. read more

I'm sorry to do it... but I have to give this Marshall's one star! It's not that you can't find great deals here, because you totally can (though not more than at any other Marshall's or TJ Maxx in the area). It's a combination of remarkably bad stocking and slow and poor customer service. I say this as someone who has spent many many hundreds of dollars at this Marshall's and who probably will continue to do so due to convenience--I'm a loyal customer, but it's due to convenience only. First off, the stocking is remarkably scattered. You'll find dresses in the coats, kids clothes in female clearance, and sizes are remarkably haphazard. On the plus side, this means you sometimes find a hidden gem that's been stashed in the wrong place. On the downside, it can take quite a long time to find what you're really looking for. However, the bigger issue is their persistently long times and grumpy customer service. I've waited in line for 40 minutes to check out, and have only once ever seen an employee out on the shop floor (which could explain the stocking situation). Once you get up to a customer service rep, it's rarely a friendly encounter. But still, we're paying for steals, not a deluxe experience. The situation that really made me reconsider their service had to do with two dress returns I just attempted. I have never before been denied a return, and do not ever engage in false returns or any dishonest business stuff--something I'm embarrassed to feel like I need to say before I begin this story. I found a cute Kate spade dress on clearance, and have always wanted one and been unable to afford it. However, it was clearly well-worn and had been returned many times; the price tag was so faded as to be nearly unreadable, and there was base makeup all over the white neckline from multiple dressing room attempts. I decided to treat myself, and to buy it in order to take it to the dry cleaners and see if they could remove the stains and make it wearable--if not, I'd return it. I told this to the woman as I checked out--that I was buying this dress in order to see if it could be cleaned enough to be wearable. She assured me that this dress would be no problem to return if cleaning was impossible, and that it had been on the clearance rack for months. I took the dress to the cleaners, who said that they could not remove the stains. Disappointed, I returned to Marshall's to return this dress I couldn't really afford in the first place. The customer service rep took the dress and scrutinized it at length, and then just walked away without saying anything. I didn't know what was happening and just stood there for several minutes confused. The customer service rep returned with her manger, who angrily informed me that I had clearly worn the expensive Kate spade dress and that the price tags had been re-affixed afterwards. I stammered that I had received the dress in worn condition and had been assured that return would be no issue, and showed that the dress had clearly been returned multiple times before I bought it--if someone had re-affixed a label, it certainly wasn't me. The manager insisted that the dress had been worn and refused to accept its return. I was so humiliated from being accused of falsifying and re-affixing labels that I didn't even really fight her on it. I hadn't been accused of something like that ever before, much less so aggressively, and honestly it felt like adding insult to injury when I was so calmly assured by another customer service rep that the dress could be returned without a problem. On another note which now seems minor, they also refused to take back a wool dress (which I had, indeed, worn once on the couch) due to several pills which had formed on one side of the skirt, which also indicated that it "has been worn too much." The dress is, truly, in great condition. I could see no difference between it and its cousins which were still on the rack. However, at least I wasn't accused of re-affixing clothing tags...? The moral of the story is, there are some decent deals to be found, as long as you don't mind doing some time-intensive digging and are confident that you'll never want to return them. But as I sit at home staring at what is now the most expensive dress I own, which is filthy from dirt and other womens' makeup, and which I will never actually be able to wear... it doesn't really seem worth it. read more

This is my go to location for jeans. They always have my size. Service is good. I also like the location a lot. It's part of an indoor shopping center. I can do 4 errands in one trip. They also have a Chick fil a and Cava grill on the same block if you get hungry. I took off one star because the lines tend to be very long no matter what day or time that I go. read more

Ahhh, the hot, janky, mess that is Marshalls in Columbia Heights! It has become markedly hot-messier in the past few months, but I still go! Stop there *before* Bed Bath and Beyond or Target for great deals. IF you can handle wading through the clutter.... I thought all Marshalls were ragged like this one but then I went to one back home and experienced discount housewares nirvana...so I have a theory that they allow the stores in "poorer" area to be a shambles, both selection-wise and organizationally. This place is a poor excuse for a Marshall's and an insult to the residents of Columbia Heights. Granted, it is not as messy as any Ross stores in the 'burbs but it's pretty darn underwhelming. I have been to many Marshall's in my lifetime and I'd have to say this is the worst I have ever been too. Slow, long lines, selection of clothing is sad. The best thing I got out of here was a $5 Nike water bottle. Take the metro to the Pentagon City Marshall's instead. Pentagon has the 2nd best Marshall's in the area. What Marshall's is #1 you ask? The biggest, very best and cleanest Marshall's in the DC area is in Tysons Corner. Lots of good finds there. How do I know this? My co-worker and I would go there for lunch every week and scope out the new arrivals. read more

I don't expect any Marshall's store to be neatly organized or even look nice, but this one takes unorganization way too far. There are carts full of random stuff blocking the aisles all the time (and they are not customers' carts). I can deal with this if I'm getting good deals, but it's pretty much impossible to find anything in this store. To top it off, the last time I was in here (which will really be the last time ever) one of the employees rudely ran over my ankles with one of those carts mentioned above when I couldn't move over fast enough for her in a cramped shoe aisle (because there were 2 carts blocking the aisle). This place is where hopes and dreams come to rot. Now I've been to a few Marshalls so I don't expect very much but this location.... The worst I've been to. Just complete chaos, when I walked in I thought I was entering a battle scene! All the employees looked as if they were being held against their will and the only one who had it together was the security guard. The active wear is pretty decent. And I don't believe in spending 50$ on yoga pants or a sports bra so I decided to pick a few things up and of course the line was long which I didn't have a prob with...as long as it moved. I've gone to Marshalls a ton since it's opened and have been really disappointed with the upkeep. You'll find clothes on the wrong racks (or strewn on the floor) and you'll struggle to move around as everything is packed in so tightly. The employees are less than helpful, especially when you're trying to return something. I keep coming back because i still find stuff here (like my new leather tote bag...mmmm) and it's so convenient but I make sure to get in and out fairly quickly. read more

I know, I know, it's Marshalls. It's never neat. It's never organized. Stuff often smells funny. Some stuff it's very, very obvious why Macy's couldn't get rid of it. But keeping that in mind, this Marshalls is still bad. No organization, ridiculously long lines, poor selection (even for a Marshalls), ridiculously unhelpful staff (even for a Marshalls), items EVERYWHERE. I don't even bother with the fitting room and just buy something (assuming I feel like waiting in line) and return if it doesn't fit.
