Found Marta on Yelp and went to her to alter my daughter's dress. We were both very pleased with the result. But she really won me over this month when I brought a nice shift dress in for alterations - I have scoliosis so one shoulder is slightly higher than the other...posing a problem for certain dresses. Marta took it as a challenge. She deconstructed the whole dress and refitted it to me. Since I didn't need it in a rush, she had me come in for two separate fittings to make sure it was perfect. And in the end, it was! Trust me, you want your tailor to be a perfectionist! I am happy to patronize an independent local business like Marta's Tailor Shop. She has years of experience, knows her trade, and is pleasant to deal with. Sometimes she gets pretty busy - what do you expect? She's in demand! And she's not the cheapest out there. First off I have to point out, Marta is truly a beautiful person. Not only is she incredibly welcoming and easy to get along with, she is really into what she does, she takes such great pride in her work, which is hard to find these days. My husband and I are celebrating our 5 yr anniversary by renewing our vows and having a photoshoot and my dress came in only DAYS before (due to delayed shipping) and I wanted to cry when I tried it on and couldn't get it to fit right. I called two people only to be told it was "not possible" to fix the problem and one tailor even suggested I used safety pins for the day.. umm thaaanks? well ok that's fine they just didn't want to take this on.. they probably would've done an awful job anyway. Well third times a charm! I decided to call one last person, I had a good feeling about Marta and went with it and I couldn't be more glad. She did an AMAZING job. Marta is the best of the very best!!!!!! Very professional, extremely friendly, and listens to exactly what you want. She gets the job done right the first time and i always feel like a million bucks when i come home and try on my altered clothes. She always gives me her advice on what kind of alterations i should make, or how much i should take off some sleeves or pants. Who wouldn't want to listen to someone who has over 50 years of experience in this business. She always delivers my clothes in a timely manner and her prices are very competitive, especially considering the level of detail she puts into them. I stopped in one day when she was really busy, with a rip on one of my pant legs. The stitching had come out and there was a big hole on the inner part of it. Martha, looked at the pants and said don't worry give me 10 minutes, she not only stopped doing what she did to fix my pants, but also told me not to worry about paying anything. I was really impressed with her kindness, and no matter how busy she is, she always takes the time to ask you about your life and how things are going. I've been going to Marta for years, and she never disappoints. She has always been sweet and kind to me and very professional. If she says she'll have it done on a certain day, she does her best to follow through, and she always calls if there are any delays. She's not inexpensive, but she's worth every dollar. I've asked her to alter dresses, pants, and bikinis and even make a birdcage cover (which she designed perfectly!). Her work is painstaking and precise. For instance, I had a favorite vintage paisley velvet jacket whose lining was falling to pieces. Marta took the entire jacket apart and put in a new lining--as good as new!! I took some & jeans there that were too short. She added some fabric and even did the fancy hem that Nordstrom's does. I found Martha online and decided to go to her because of the great reviews. I have never had a pair of pants that fit so I took in 4 pairs of jeans and she did a remarkable job. Honestly I was shocked, they fit perfectly! One pair felt a little tight and she told me to take them home and see how they feel after I wear them out and if I wasn't happy she would fix them no problem. I have never had anything altered other than bridesmaid dresses so I have nothing to compare it to but it was 25 for an waist and I believe 40 for the inseam, because she literally had to take the jeans apart. The alterations took a little longer than she said because she is getting so much new business! If you need something done get to Martha's quick before the word gets out! She's great. read more

I have been going to Marta for about 8 yrs now. My experience is that she is always super friendly and accommodating to my time requirements. Originally I used her for business needs and have since been going to her for all my personal needs. She is very skilled in her work and does a WONDERFUL job. She has an incredible attention to detail & genuinely cares and takes pride in her work. She has done everything from hemming pants, tailoring bridesmaid dresses, tailoring my wedding gown and most recently she made a window seat cushion for my home. For the window seat cushion she came to my house on a few occasions. First she came to measure it, then came back to check that the pattern fit the window from the original measurements she took. Lastly, she came to deliver it and make sure that the fit was perfect (which is was). She understands that when she is doing a custom job that it is important to get it right so that everyone is happy with the end result. Needless to say, the cushion came out beautifully. Marta even took the extra step of adding a zipper to the inner liner so that I could wash that as well as the outer cover if I needed to (I have two big slobbery dogs that like to lie in the window). Marta is also very reasonably priced for the work she does. I was a clothing & textiles major in college and totally understand the process, but don't have the time, and honestly hate doing it myself. Yes, you could go to the dry cleaners to have pants hemmed for a buck or two less, but my experience is that they never use the appropriate gauge of thread (specifically for jeans) so the top stitching doesn't match the rest of the top-stitching, or they will just machine stitch the hem instead of hand whip-stitching for dress pants. Why pay the money for a new pair of trousers/jeans/dress etc. and then cut corners in alterations and detract from the look of the garment? For my part I have found the old saying to be true: "You get what you pay for"!! read more

I took my wedding dress to Marta and she did a fantastic job! If you want to ensure you have a good seamstresses go see Marta. Do call her in advance (you'll need to leave a message) she is a one-woman shop and has a lot of business. I got lucky when I walked in off the street (a month before my wedding) and she was able to do a fitting that day. She even accommodated my schedule one night by staying open late. Having never gotten a dress altered before I don't know how her prices compare, but my guess is that you might be able to get it done cheaper somewhere else, but the quality may not be as good. read more

Marta saved my wedding day! She repaired my dress, which was damaged by another seamstress and was able to complete the alterations less than two weeks before my wedding. She was able to completely repair the damage from the other seamstress; even the beading and lace had to be hand sewn. Marta's customer service was exceptional; she is an absolute doll! I am So thrilled that I found Marta and she really saved me! I had ordered a "Mother of the Bride" gown that never arrived. Thank God I found a gorgeous all-lace gown by designer, 'Tadashi Shoji', but it was a bit large in the neckline and very long. I was quite concerned though, as it was a lace scallop on the hem and didn't want it cut off. I was told the designer sews it in separately, but knew it would still be very time consuming and difficult! Marta reassured me that she could do it, but would also do a baste stitch, so I could try it on again and make sure everything looked and fit great. And indeed it did!!! I was thrilled, and received almost as many compliments as my daughter, the gorgeous bride!!! This is a photo of me in the dress the day I bought it, and before the alterations. Marta exceeded my expectations in the tailoring and is truly a sweetheart and expert seamstress!!! Even though it was before Christmas and Marta was very busy, she understood how stressed I was and was able to help. She did a flat out fantastic job on my very expensive wedding gown.
