Malena is a magician with a needle. She helped me out of a jam and got my pants for my wedding into tip top shape. Some necessary hemming in the back got them right where they needed to be and in fine form with the rest of my suit. She also took care of my 20 y/o UCLA sweater, getting rid of all the holes and tears that I had accumulated. Its back in great shape and for the whole shot, it was a well deserved price. I will definitely be coming back for more suit fits with Malena in the future. Even though shes a Brazil fan, she said she would add another estrella to my Spain jersey as soon as a find the matching treading that the first one contains. Give her time to get stuff done. I would like to preface this review with the fact that I'm well aware this was a last minute job and had to be rushed which I made sure to communicate to the lady at the very beginning of my consult. I took a dress that cost me about $350. I had a backup that I wasn't crazy about but needed no alterations so if she had been honest and told me, there was no way she could've done a decent job, I would've been ok. I told the lady that my problem with it was that it was too low cut for my liking. I took it to her on a Tuesday and asked if it would be possible to have it ready by Thursday. She charged me a $45 rush fee. Mind you, I have never had a floor length dress altered so I don't know what is considered reasonable but I had no qualms about possibly overpaying since I knew how last minute it was. She fitted me and pinned my dress pretty quickly, dress felt comfortable and I was trusting her since I saw all the positive reviews. She had it ready for me on Thursday as agreed. I was pressed for time, but I did try it on and felt a bit uncomfortable in it from my left side. I also noticed that a flower beading on the side was damaged (I checked my entire dress before taking it to her and all the beading was perfect) but I'm too much of an introvert to speak up. I figured with it at least not being low cut, I would just deal with it. She ended up charging me a total of $71.66. Wedding day was the next day and as the day went on the uncomfortable feeling on my left arm turned to pain. Come to the end of the night, I had a rash because of how much tighter she had sown up the left side. When I took the dress off and finally inspected her work...some of it had come off (it did not rip while I took it off since it zipped down and I was no party animal so the damage was not caused by excessive moving around in the dress) I also noticed it was crooked. The lady was nice but her work was not worth $71. Furthermore, I'm sure she lied when she told me that she had undone some beading where she had to cut out some fabric and spread it all over. There was no cutting. She literally folded the excess fabric and sowed. I will not be back and don't recommend. I could've done what she did myself. read more

Unprofessional, untrustworthy, and unkind. I came in and asked her to fix my pants and sweater. She fixed the pants on the spot which was appreciated. She told me to come back in 7 days for the sweater. I came back and she hadn't worked on it at all. She said to come back in the afternoon. She then stated to come back in another 7 days. I have never heard of an alteration taking more than 7 days. But she was kind enough to do my pants for free so I chose to not say anything. On day 14 I called her to make sure that my sweater was done...it was not. She asked me to come back in another 7 days since it was hot outside and didn't need it anyway. 21 days?!?!?!?!?? I explained to her that she had already had the item for 2 weeks? She then got angry and started raised her voice at me. The whole conversation was surreal as I didn't understand why SHE was getting angry with ME? When I went to pick up my sweater I gave her my credit card she then stated "I don't need people's money who don't appreciate my work". She then continued to insult me stating that people come in here looking for freebies all the time. I WOULD HAVE MUCH RATHER PAID SOMEONE TO DO A DECENT JOB RATHER THEN WASTING MY TIME. She continued stating that "It's not like it's a bridal piece so I don't understand why you couldn't have waited." Then she stated that I was "critical and not humble." Now she's insulting my character?!?!? Not interested in continuing business with negative energy. No bad vibes please. We were invited to a New Year's Eve black tie party at The Queen Mary at the last minute. I had absolutely nothing to wear. So I ordered things from Amazon on Thursday. My suit arrived on Saturday at 5pm with New Year's Eve being Sunday. Melana came in on Sunday when normally closed. She was able to hem my pants in 2 hours. In the future I will give her more notice. Also wants to alter things to her liking, not the customer's. Argued with me about pants length. Left in too much material in the hem "just in case" because she thought they were being made too short. I had to take them to another tailor to correct them because they puckered from too much material left in the hem. She also pressed my delicate silk pants. You should never iron silk, only steam. Doesn't understand basics about fabric care. I found another shop in Long Beach, Fit & Style, that is professional, keeps time deadlines, and doesn't argue with customers. Mine is a wedding dress disaster! Please read with confidence that although this was in 06 my feelings about this is bad enough to be shared. Regal Tailor was recommended to me by a good friend who had a bridemaid gown altered and gave them glowing reviews. I brought my simple wedding gown in to be altered. It had a simple embroidered design with 4 rhinestones and I wanted to embelish it with pearl like beads. I knew the tailor did not always make deadlines so I openly lied to her about the date just to make sure my dress was done. SHe had it done a few days before the lied about due date so she did make the time she stated.. that was the ONLY thing she did correctly. I footed my own wedding costs and that meant I was on a budget. I had $350 to spend on my dress and the tailor knew this up front. My mistake... I did not get my agreement in writing.. I dropped off my dress with the instruction of my budget, requests and waited for the 2 weeks to pick it up. I did call a few times just to check on the progress, and I did get to try the dress on before the beading to check alterations.. I picked up my dress and was almost in tears. The beading was done as described... the tailor took off my rhinestone accents.. ( they matched my shoes ) and covered my entire bodice with pearl beads, she beaded the hem with little pearls without asking ! I am an easy going person and didn't think it looked bad, .... BUT IT'S MY WEDDING GOWN AND SHE DID THIS BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT IT WOULD LOOK ENCHANTING..!! The total bill when all was done.. not the agreed upon $350... but $675. The beading took much longer than projected.... and don't forget she took off stuff and added stuff without asking the bride! THE WORST PART WAS.. DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING I NOTED THAT ABOUT 1/2 OF MY BEADS ON MY BODICE WERE GLUED ON. Many feel off before my wedding and I personally fixed my own gown. I also purchased the rhinstones that were removed and I reattached them... I should of done the beading myself it would of saved me a head ache from a dishonest person. I called and left a scathing message about the half assed job... the fact the cost was off the charts and what was I to do? She had my wedding gown... all in all this was a NIGHTMARE. I told my friend who recommended her to me what happened and she could not beleive my experience.. DONT BOTHER with Regal. ( I forgot to add to this really bad experience was the personal drama of illness that I had to endure with Malena.... she found out that I was registered nurse and just latched onto me with her ailments, chronic fight with breast cancer ect.... way too much information! I just wanted a top notch job on my wedding gown.. not a liar who charges extra, glues shit together and has the adacityt to tell me that things took more work than planned that is was her fee was 300 dollars plus her quote. Here's how my experience with Malena went. I dropped off my dress for an alteration on a Saturday. Malena had some great ideas on how to make the dress fit me better, and promised to call me back after she'd done the first round of alterations. She was easy to talk to and had a warm personality. I dropped off the dress on June 23 and let her know I needed it before July 27 for a wedding. 1 week goes by with no phone call so I call her. Over the phone, she apologizes for not calling me back sooner and that she had finished the first round of alterations and asks me to come in. The initial alterations were great and she told me what she had to do next and said she'd call me back for the next round of fittings. Two week goes by, and no phone call from her. I call her again, and she hasn't started back on my dress. She promises to finish up and I should come in that weekend. I do, and the dress isn't finished at all! I mistakenly drop to her that the wedding has been cancelled and she interprets that as an extension on the due date, even though I ask that it still be finished on time. She promises to finish up asap, but by now, I already know that the original due date would be long gone before she finishes. She completes the dress on August 4, after I called her to remind her on the 1st that she's had my dress for over a month now. I'm frustrated with Malena for all the delays. Her work was great and she's a very nice lady to talk to. However, her prices were hefty (my alteration cost $84 when the initial estimate was $50-$70) and she didn't seemed organized enough to keep her word (on when the dress would be completed and on when she'd call me back). I'm confused! The other 2 reviews about this place were so awesome that I was eager to work with Malena. In the end, however, if you still want to work with her, be sure to stress to her how quickly you need things completed (lie if you have to!!!) and be aware that you might have to call her back to push her to finish on time. read more

After reading some of the glowing reviews of Malena's alteration skills, I decided to bring in 2 jackets to have the sleeves shortened (hey, I'm Asian... I'm short) and 1 knitted sweater to patch a hole in the collar. Upon entering her shop, I got the impression that this "shop" is actually more like just an extension of her home turned into a shop. Although talking to her for only a few minutes, I learned that she was having some medical procedures done at the end of the week, which was TMI for me, but I guess this shows how personable and comfortable she is with her customers. I agree with the other reviewers' complaints of her poor time management skills... my garments were also not completed on the due date and she didn't even contact me to let me know this. Another negative is her high prices... I paid $80 for the alterations however if you're a first-time customer, she'll waive the sales tax for you. The response time however was unusually long and then the ultimate response was I could come in to discuss but she is really busy with weddings and was not sure if she could help, but probably not. My boyfriend very sweetly offered to bring my jacket to the tailor while I was at work today- it snagged in the luggage directly on the shoulder seam while we were traveling a couple weeks ago. Being that the tear was on the seam, I knew that this was a quick and easy fix, however I just don't have the time to mend myself, ergo the tailor. He brought the jacket in and the woman who assisted him told him that it would be $35 effing dollars but that she would do him a favor since he is a new customer and bring the cost down to $28. Knowing that this price could not be correct, he called me to see if I wanted to go through with it and instantly, I said no because we could find someone to do the same work for cheaper. It's not that we can't afford that price, we are just smart enough to recognize a ripoff when we see one. He then kindly told her thanks, but no thanks to which she replied "Well, you know, this is Belmont Heights," as if to imply that HE was out of line, didn't belong there, and didn't know what he was getting himself into. Excuse me, but who the hell speaks to a potential customer like that!? Not wanting to defend himself, he just left and took his business to a tailor that would do simple seam work for $10. It's called financial intelligence, you self-righteous dummy. Any Joe Schmo should know a good deal from a bad one, but maybe that's why she deters good, loyal business. Marlena did an excellent job on a dress that I had to have totally reconstructed. Every seam had to be taken in 2-3" the hems (there were 2 slips plus the dress) needed to be cut and the boning also needed to be removed. She did all of this within the 4 weeks that I gave her and her work was amazing. She gave me the first time discount and the I feel bad for you because the store that the dress was ordered from got the wrong measurments and I was given a tent instead of a dress. read more

I suppose I got lucky; my tailoring job wasn't critical and I wasn't in a hurry to get my item back (a belt). But, I was a little confused as to why Malena came so highly recommended after my loooong wait to get my belt back. After significant weight loss I needed someone I could trust to remake a couple of my favorite suits I owned prior to my weight loss. I found Malena through a google search, and put her through a rigorous phone interview (sorry Malena! ) and she immediately knew the right answers, so I went to see her. It was a match. Other than in Paris, this is the FIRST person (here) that understands proportion and how to tailor to fit the individual body. She is old-world Couturier in her approach. I am 5'3". She understands how to dress a short guy! She knew exactly how to cut the slacks to make me look taller. Almost all off-the-rack slacks have far too much fabric for someone my height, and she re-cut/designed several pairs of slacks, and a Ralph Lauren suit for me and the results were fantastic. She is currently working on a Louis Feraud suit that I won't let anyone else touch. She is always busy, so get your things there in advance if its a major overhaul. Other things just ASK when it can be done and she'll tell you exactly when she will have it ready. A good tailor, like a good doctor, dentist, is going to be busy. Prices are correct. A $5 hem is going to look like a $5 hem. Her prices are fair. Get it done correctly and you only have to do it once, right? Right. read more
