She was able to tailor a very fancy lace dress that arrived late in the Mail in one day of turnaround prior to leaving town to wear it for a wedding. Amazing! I've come to Marta TWICE now with super last minute alterations and she was the only tailor to accommodate me and for aVERY reasonable price! Her work is IMPECCABLE and she is incredibly sweet. I could probably return the clothes she's altered for my money back and they wouldn't notice. Marta is a true artist. Her work is impeccable. I am required to wear a men's size small Hawaiian shirt as part of a uniform for 24 concerts. At 5' 3", I swim in it. I bought my wedding dress from China, too small and not enough time to return and get a bigger size. I prayed about finding someone who would fix this and went to yelp. I found Marta's Tailor Shop with all positive feedback so I went to her and I must tell you it's all true. My dress had just enough on the side to let out and she did but now lace was missing from the sides and she said no problem she will fix it. A couple more fitting and she put the additional lace by hand. You can't even tell my dress had a problem. She worked a miracle and I was able to wear my beautiful dress for my wedding. I went to Marta's based on the glowing reviews by my fellow Yelpers. I needed to have my daughter's Prom dress and her date's matching vest made. I have to say that I was very disappointed. I called ahead to make an appointment. I arrived on time with my daughter and her Prom dated to be measured and to get a quote for the dress to be made. Marta was nice, however, was put off by the fact that we had a sketch of the dress as opposed to an actual picture. She even made the comment that she doesn't see very well and had an air like she was doing US a favor by even considering making the dress. WTH? My daughter wanted a simple dress, in my opinion - strapless dress, straight in the bodice and gathered in 3 tiers at the bottom, knee length. It is a standard type dress which we would have purchased off of the rack, but could not find a comparable dress in the color that she wanted. Marta quoted us a price of $500!!!!!! and that was just for the dress. We had not even gotten to the vest for her date yet. Are you kidding me????? We quickly thanked her and ran out of there as soon as possible NEVER to return! I thankfully got a referral to a WONDERFUL seamstress named Sophia at 1936 Pacific Avenue, Long Beach (562)256-6770. She is amazing! My daughter brought in the sketch of her dress, Sophia measured her and we provided the material. The total price of the dress plus a little Jacket/Shrug (in case it got cold) was $180. We matched up her date's vest in a little downtown LA shop for $25 and they looked amazing! I have no problem paying for quality work but Marta's price of $500 was OUTRAGEOUS. I would NEVER go back or refer anyone to her just based on that overpriced quote. What the heck? Why are all the good reviews 'filtered' and only the 1-3 stars show up?? Sorta unfair dontcha think, Yelp. I've been going to Marta's for years because my Grandma always went/goes to her, and quite frankly, she's amazing. Over the years I've seen that she has a TON of experience and she knews her stuff so unlike most chain establishments out there, I trust Marta with everything including, most recently, my wedding dress. She took on what I thought would be a simple addition but in reality turned out to be a pretty massive project. And she was happy to hear my ideas and suggestions. From start to finish the process of alterations and additions took a few months but I made sure to get the dress to her well in advance as she told me it'd be about that long in our original discussing about the stuff I wanted. And after my final fitting yesterday I couldn't be happier! The dress fits like a dream and looks amazing! She does a lot more than wedding dresses though. Today I'm actually wearing a super cute dress Marta took in for me, you'd never know it used to be a size 12! (I'm a 6) Clothes are freakin expensive so I don't mind paying a little to get some more use out of my wardrobe. Marta gets my seal of approval any day of the week! read more

I brought a dress that needed alterations for my graduation in to Marta. She charged me $100 for the alterations and when I came to pick it up I mentioned that the top part of the dress felt uncomfortably loose, she responded defensively that she did not touch that part of the dress when I remember her placing pins in that section in my initial visit to drop the dress. She continued to make excuses that the dress was so wrinkled when it came in and she spent lots of time pressing it to be the way it was now. Went to Marta's to get a zipper put into a dress for my wedding. She quoted me $50 because of the beading around the waist and that she wanted to do a good job. I figured, why not and wanted to be respectfull of her work and time. I brought in another jersey dress to be hemmed and taken in under the arms...she quoted me $50 to hem the dress and $45 to take in about a 1/2" of seams just a little under the arms of a sleevless dress! never to return....by the way, the dry cleaners on Redondo and 11th only charged me $15 for the zipper replacement. I was looking for a place to hem a bridesmaid dress for a wedding I was in. Right off the bat Marta was very kind and welcoming. It's a small shop and personally owned by her. You can tell how much heart and passion she has for the work she does and she works extremely hard. I would come here over any large owned bridal shop any day. It was a little expensive for the hemming ($100 for 3 piece hemming - CASH only FYI) but you pay for what you get! She did the job correct and on the first time - exactly what I wanted. She even re-did a button completely that was broken for me for free. She has been sewing all her life and knows what she is doing. After searching Yelp and being new to the Long Beach area, I wanted to try a new alteration place near my current home that I can rely and trust. I normally go to Perth Cleaners in Anaheim, but it is further away, so for convenience, I looked here in my vicinity. I needed a simple black dress hemmed a couple inches. It is one layer of sheer material. Marta seemed like a nice lady from first impressions. I walked in to her store and she acted decent. I said "Hi! I'm Lourdes, I found you through Yelp." And she said "Oh, thank you very much" and seemed pleasant. I put my bag down and held up my dress and asked her how much it would be to alter a few inches off the bottom, she looked at it quickly and said, "for this dress, $50." I was very surprised. I said "I would be able to get this dress altered in a place in Anaheim for $20 or even less, why is this so expensive?" She threw her hands up in the air and quickly said "Well, be my guest and drive all the way over there..." giving the impression that she would gladly not take a new customer and new business - rude attitude and true colors showed quickly. So I took my dress and quickly left. After being so turned-off by her actions and price, I ended up going to Perth Cleaners in Anaheim (corner of Ball and Euclid) and they quoted my hem only $18! Marta's pricing is outrageous, please save your money. Perth Cleaners does a wonderful job, I rather drive over there and give them my business. I will not go back to Marta. read more

I was looking desperately for someone to sew me a wedding dress with less than two months til my wedding. I knew I didn't want a "standard" wedding dress; I'm not a very traditional person, our wedding wasn't to be traditional, and just knew I wanted something different. I was thinking about a vintage dress, but knew I'd have trouble finding one since I'm a size 16. So I did a drawing of the dress I wanted, and also found something similar to it online: a picture of a vintage pattern. I found Marta's tailoring via Google, and went by her shop and talked to her about it. Now, her shop is quite small and doesn't seem like much on the outside, but don't be put off -- Marta is a DRESSMAKER. When I met her in the shop, she just looked like exactly what I was looking for, down to the measuring tape around her neck! :) Plus I hope this helps her get continued business, because she is working on fixing up her shop. We talked about what I wanted and she liked the picture I had, but encouraged me to go to Joanne's Fabrics because they actually have reissues of vintage Vogue patterns, and, she said, I might find the one I'd found a picture of. We also talked about cost, and even though I said it was my wedding dress, she quoted me $450 for the dress, which was what she had charged for a dress for another customer of hers whose review I saw online -- so, she isn't one of those people who'll overcharge once they hear the word "wedding"! She assured me that she could do it by my wedding date but that she needed the fabric and a pattern, if possible, as soon as possible. So off I went to Joanne's, and, lo and behold, they DO have a whole "vintage" section in the Vogue pattern catalog! I didn't find exactly the dress I had a picture of, but I ended up finding something I liked even better. So I got some fabric, lining fabric and the pattern and brought them to Marta. She was happy to see I had a pattern and we arranged for a fitting of a muslin (a basted, "temporary" dress done in inexpensive fabric to check the overall pattern's fit). At that time, she also said that she'd have to revise her original quote up to $500 because the pattern I had chosen was more complicated than the original one I'd shown her. This seemed reasonable to me; it was a fitted dress with a complicated yoke and complicated pleating in the skirt. Also, the fabric I'd chosen required that she overlock all the edges of the pieces since otherwise it would fray -- and I can attest to that, because the swatch I was carrying around with me for reference of other stuff I was getting for the wedding just shredded all to hell! We had the muslin fitting a week or so later and it fit me so well I jokingly asked her if I could have it as a dress too! She then began the construction of the dress, and had me in for two (maybe three?) more fittings before she had the finished product, which, when I got it (in plenty of time for the wedding), was absolutely FANTASTIC. Not only was it a beautiful dress, it was BEAUTIFULLY sewn -- completely lined, perfectly fitted, and the detail work was just beautiful. The neck style of the dress was quite wide, so she'd sewn little snap-loops in to hold my bra strap out of the way and keep it from slipping; she'd taken care that the flowers on the fabric were all oriented the same way (even though it wasn't immediately obvious there was a direction ot the pattern) and I swear you could wear the dress inside-out, the seams were so well-sewn! Oh, and she had a great idea to cut the sleeves on the bias to give them some stretch, since the fabric we had otherwise had really no give and made it a bit awkward to raise my arms. Once she changed it to a bias-cut (something that was not in the pattern) the sleeves felt perfect and had just enough give. Oh, and when I had a bit of a crisis with worrying that my petticoat I'd ordered might not arrive on time, Marta said to let me know by the Thursday before my wedding if I hadn't gotten it, and she'd go to a place in LA she knew about and get it for me! She knew how much I had on my plate and was willing to go above and beyond to help me out. I ended up feeling like a movie star in that dress-- I really wish I could post pictures of it! I can't say enough about Marta, she is a professional and a very sweet woman. Not only is she a professional, but I think she sews at a really reasonable price -- $500 for a completely lined, vintage-style, custom fit, beautifully-sewn dress, in a hurry? I think that's more than fair! If you are looking for someone who does more than just alterations, someone who is a true dressmaker, you've found her! (Though she does that too -- we needed my husband's suit pants altered last-minute before the wedding and she did it like overnight!) read more

Marta's work is very good, but Marta is incredibly unprofessional and her prices are very high. I dropped 3 items off on Wednesday and she told me to come back a week later. Definitely reasonable. She calls me on the Tuesday beforehand letting me know she needs a few more days to finish the work. Okay, sure. I tell her I'll be back on Friday around 10 or 11. I come in at 11:30 on Friday and she tells me she hasn't finished ironing the items and tells me to come back in an hour. Since I'm on my way to work and have been more than understanding with time, I'm annoyed. She then proceeds to tell me that I will come back on Saturday -- not ask me, but tell me. I work Saturdays as well, and she pressures me, asking me what time I work, telling me I need to come in at 8am, and making fun of me when I don't want to come in at that hour. If you want your garments to be forgotten about, delayed, unironed, and your schedule up to her scrutiny, then I suggest coming to Marta. read more

Pants - pants...the off the rack version rarely fits me, too long, fits in the hips too big in the waist and thighs. Tailoring...I've had alterations done "cheap" elsewhere and they were.hemmed shorter than I wanted or they take in the waist and there will be this point sticking out or the extra material was left in the seams and you have these wing things...who needs that extra material???? It isn't cheap if you can't wear the darn things after they get hacked. Marta did an excellent job on my pants. She did ALOT of work on them and they look fantastic. There isn't any extra material where the seams were taken in. Exact right length. You can NOT tell they've been altered. The inside seams look like the ones from the rack = nicely finished. No weird points on thighs or fanny. Jeans hem have the same color thread as original hem. Very excellent details. They look really good. You get what you pay for and that is quality tailoring. read more
