A stop at Martha's Country Bakery has become a tradition whenever I travel to Brooklyn for work! First off, I always find myself at Martha's late at night- normally after 10pm and I love that they stay open until 12, great after a night of drinking! Everything I have ever tried has been delicious. The deserts here are very rich, be prepared to have a bunch of sugar tantalize your taste buds. While we normally get a couple of different things to try, we can never quite finish them. Portions are just right! They have a wide assortments of pies, cake slices, and all types of baked goods- too many to pick from. They also have daily specials- $2 pie day On Wednesday is my favorite! The staff is friendly and the environment is normally really lively. They don't go above and beyond, but I wouldn't expect them to this late at night, but they do make an effort to check in and the service is fast. I don't have the highest regard for Martha's thanks to the Forest Hills location by my house that is always packed, infested with vermin, and ridiculously overpriced but Brooklyn seems to know what they're doing. Every weekday they have a special going and I had the pleasure of indulging in several of their goods as a result. Their cupcakes aren't really strong in flavor at all. They also are very delicate and crumbly and the buttercream only really has a hint of flavor. Not my favorite admittedly but for the discount, it's worth giving a try. I tried their pie slices and as someone whose not really a fan of pie, honestly my opinion doesn't matter lol. I wasn't really at all wowed by it or anything, it was just okay, but for $2.50 a slice I have no complaints. I wanted to try their cake slices (they were only buttercream slices) but unfortunately didn't get the chance to. From what I was told it's either red velvet, blue velvet, sometimes chocolate. Beyond their deals, Martha's really does have some good cakes. Their triple chocolate mousse is probably one of my favorite cakes period and their strawberry cheesecake is pretty darn good too! Let me start by saying the cakes and pastries at this bakery are phenomenal, this has always been one of my favorites in the city, and I make the trip from Staten Island to Brooklyn regularly to get desserts for my family. That said my experience tonight, will prevent me from EVER returning to this location again. I found the staff to be extremely rude and condescending. The waitress had an attitude the entire time she served my party, didn't want to answer questions about the cakes, and brushed aside concerns. They also added a 18% gratuity to my check with no clear signage or verbiage, when speaking with the manager to get the AUTO GRATUITY removed from our bill, we were told it is the LAW to tip, and that they can choose to add tip to parties with no notification. That's just not true. While some of the party was talking to the manger, the waitress came over to berate the remaining party for not wanting to tip her. When bringing this to the managers attention, we were told we were clearly lying because she wouldn't have done it. Why 5 people would lie about that after you have already reverse, the gratuity is beyond me! I really hope they do better in the future, because this is a great way to lose the loyal following you have, and in this economy that is a death sentence. It was a pretty full house but the waitress was able to seat us quickly at a small table in the back. Seating is a little bit tight but it's fine if you don't plan on staying for long. I ordered a rice pudding and iced chai latte since I wasn't in the mood for anything too heavy. The rice pudding came out with whipped cream. The latte was refreshing and the pudding was creamy and lightly sweet. There are raisins in the pudding - I dont normally like them but I enjoyed the ones mixed in with the pudding. In terms of service, it actually took quite a while for our drinks, and later our desserts, to come out. I don't think we ordered anything too crazy and I assumed it would be quick since most of the desserts just need to be plated... Sooo, who knew? NY cheesecake is a real thing. After visiting an outdoor food market, I wanted something sweet and before catching the L Train back to Brooklyn, I saw this bakery. Everything looked amazing! I ordered a brownie walnut cheesecake, which basically was a moist brownie with a piece of chocolate covered cheesecake on top of it. It was delicious.I enjoyed the saltiness of the few walnuts, to breakup the sweet. I can tell the cheesecake has a different taste from what I'm used to but I really enjoyed the NY cheesecake. I can only describe the 4 treats I purchased as follows: RICE PUDDING was absolutely horrific. The rice was almost raw and barely suspended in a watery solution containing three ancient raisins. It wasn't the best but it wasn't bad either. I liked that it wasn't too sweet, though a few improvements can made, starting with a fluffier texture for the cake and cream! In case I wasn't satisfied with the strawberry shortcake, I also got a blueberry cheesecake. I liked the generous topping of blueberry concoction, but I liked the super thin layer of crust even more. This still has some of the hipster atmosphere, so you won't feel like you're actually in some rural area without any wifi. It has lots of good vegan choices, but the best are the cheesecakes. We each got a latte and the vegan strawberry cheesecake, which looked like the real thing. It's about $5 for a latte. That's about average for around here. It's about $8 for a slice of cheesecake. So I had this place bookmarked and heard many delicious tales about their cake. I didn't buy any of their many delicious looking cakes, but I did purchase some cupcakes and a banana nut loaf. Let's say I didn't get a chance to get any of the cupcakes because when I reach home, my kids and hubs went into attack mode, and ate them up before I could get a taste. They loved it, but I cant go by what they say because they love sweets, but I can go by what my hubs said, and he thought it was one of the best I brought home to him. That says alot about a cupcake because I've brought home plenty and from many different bake shops throughout the city, so I was shocked to hear him say this. I have a favorite cupcake spot and I have to make another trip back to Martha's so I can compare. I do have to say my banana loaf was good, but not the best I had, and that's why I gave four stars and not five. When I make my return, I think I will stay to have my cake, the place is quite cozy and they have tables you can sit down at and have a coffee or latte, tea etc. The staff was nice, and helpful. This is my second or third time visiting a Martha's bakery but my first time visiting the location in Brooklyn. It's a lot smaller and more intimate than the location in queens. The people behind the counter were attentive and patient. I got strawberry cheesecake and a mint tea. My partner got plain cheesecake (boring) & everything was really good.
