Fun historical spot I highly recommend checking out at least once while visiting Georgetown! Definitely make reservations because it is very busy and has people waiting by the door 24/7. Ordered the reuben with sweet potato waffle fries and crab cake sandwich. My reuben was just okay, but the waffle fries were great and addicting! I couldn't believe they didn't charge extra for the sweet potato waffle fries. The reuben wasn't bad, but nothing blew me away. Standard sandwich that I wouldn't order again if I were to dine here. My bf ordered the crab cake sandwich and the crab cake itself was delicious! I would definitely order just the crab cakes next time. A lot of flavors and tasted fresh. Take a trip back in time going to this historic Georgetown spot. Had a nice bourbon cocktail that had some refreshing fruit flavors. The oyster soup had just the right amount of fishyness. Not as heavy as clam chowder. I would absolutely get it again and I'm not even a big oyster fan. Steak was cooked medium to perfection with a nice char on the outside. Would have wanted the mashed potatoes to be a bit more creamy. Soft shell crab was a special on the menu and it did not disappoint. Lots of recent poor reviews, and I understand why. They seem to have raised the prices quite a bit, and there is a 5% administrative ( junk) fee on top of that. Made a reservation several days in advance, they would not seat my friend who is in her late 70s until I arrived a few minutes later. We were seated in a small booth next to the kitchen. We both ordered the avocado toast. And neither of us liked the odd sweet taste, which really detracted from all of the other flavors. It took quite a while to be able to tell our server, who otherwise was quite good. By that point, my friend had finished hers and I was halfway through mine. He said he would ask the kitchen and told us it was honey. Honey is not listed in the ingredients on the menu, and neither one of us liked it, but no substitutions or other accommodation was offered. It is prominently displayed on the menu, but I dislike and avoid restaurants that charge junk fees. Just raise the prices, they have been raised quite a bit already, couldn't Martin's incorporate that extra 5%? In addition, I don't think it's even legal to charge tax on that junk fee. As a native Washingtonian, I have enjoyed coming to Martin's many times over the years, but I'm unlikely to return anytime soon. read more

The wait was supposed to be an hour but we got seated in about 30minutes. The greeter is super unfriendly though and the restaurant seems unorganized. We ordered the calamari and shrimp and the Reuben sandwich. The calamari and shrimp were nothing special and didn't taste fresh. The Reuben was good flavor wise but the bread was wet enough that we ended up just eating the meat out of it. The tables are jam packed together. The stairs totally he restrooms are a safety hazard. I'll make this short and sweet. Come here got the historical significance, lively atmosphere, excellent service, and deliciously strong cocktails. The food is average. The onion soup which I heard was a must was ordered by both members of our party and were not consistent in taste or appearance and was nothing special. The other dishes were extremely underwhelming - I would not recommend a single thing from then (beet salad, potato skins, crab cakes). The staff were all very friendly and accommodating even though we didn't have a reservation. The food was good. We stopped in on a cold, snowy day and I was quickly warmed up with a delicious hot toddy and a cozy booth. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable. The food we ordered came out quickly. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is quite simple. Expensive and WORTH IT is NOT even remotely close to consideration. There are great choices and great prices. It's the disrespect you will get from the bouncer with the glasses. If he's not asking everyone to step outside and fight, if he could just remain professional, just because someone stands up to step outside of a tight booth, yeah, the evening would be superb! The calamari and jumbo shrimp cocktail were great, but the oyster stew was stellar! Who knew there would be six plump oysters in a creamy broth that wasn't too rich and released their natural juices? It was amazing. My husband had crabcakes that were delicious. This is more than elevated tavern food. It's as good as you'll find anywhere in The DMV. Truly a fun experience! Dining at Martin's is a ceremony steeped in tradition. A few tidbits; reservations essential, place is much smaller and louder than you expect, and forget about parking this is Georgetown! You dine outside in the heated patio but the real action is inside! BTW, don't sweat it if you are committed to dining in one of the signature booths as nearly all of the booths have some historical significance. We sat in the Nixon booth! Nixon was a regular for many years included his time in the House, Senate, as Veep and finally as President. Her loved the meatloaf prepared by Grandma Martin. Even if you end up seated in the backroom "Dugout" don't worry as baseball greats Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Ty Cobb hung there. Also a young Congressman named Lyndon Johnson often strategized in the Dugout with his mentor, Speaker Sam Rayburn. LBJ became Senate Majority Leader mostly thanks to Rayburn maneuvering the Senate leadership and making deals to ensure Johnson became Senate Democratic Leader. After arrival our waiter took our drink order (Dynasty Brewing Pilsner from a local brewery) and we asked for water. It was kinda taking a while for our drinks and I was concerned, then a server appears with our water puts down four Martin coasters and right behind him is another server with our beers placed gallantly on the awaiting coasters. Ahhh now we get it, these folks are pretty good at this. Started with the Welsh Rarebit--love this starter! Arrived piping hot and bubbly in a cast iron pan with toast for dipping. Barely toasted bread is kinda lame for dipping. I might suggest asking if they can serve it with steak fries instead, that would be a world beater--but that is just a weird foodie suggestion. Lunch options sampled included a burger (no bun of course) and a steak and cheese sandwich. Burger was a bit over-cooked but whatever. While we waited about 10 minutes to be seated after our reservation time, it was fine since it was a packed Saturday afternoon. But saturday night,that shift is clueless on how to read faces who wants a drink and although a packed bar,they are deep in conversation with each other.
