This place is a classic if you live in Georgetown. The vibes are wonderful and the decor always feel cozy and lively. All of the staff are so nice and so diligent. I've been here several times in several different capacities (with family visiting, with friends in town, for work holiday happy hour) and every single time Martin's Tavern impressed everyone. They're also great for all times of year, because of the heaters and tent that they have outside in the winter, and the beautiful outdoor tables for the summer. In terms of food, I was very impressed with their eggs benedict, but the chicken sandwich is a favorite of mine. There are not many places where my recommendation is something as common as a chicken sandwich, but something about this one is just so good. The only downside I can even think of is that the bathroom is very, very tiny, so there's usually a really long line that can be pretty slow. read more

Amazing service, made a reservation and was accidentally placed outside. After talking to their manager, who explained everything very professionally, we decided to stay at the restaurant and sit outside. The outside placement was a mistake through Resy. After ordering a drink, the manager came and found us and escorted us inside to an amazing booth. From there, we not only had delicious food and amazing drinks, but the service was top-notch, and the ambience was unbeatable. 11/10 would recommend!!! read more

My friend had brought me here while showing me around town and I was pleasantly surprised - thought it would be a little gimmicky but actually really enjoyed the meal! Food was solid - I got the little bit of chicken fried which has fried chicken, bacon, gravy and an egg on top of a biscuit. I love Martin's Tavern, and they are usually a 5-star review place. We go there a lot; they treat us well and are generally very accommodating. The place has been around for almost 100 years, and each booth has its own history. It is a must-see in Washington. My 3-star review concerns the reservation system. It was not clear whether you had to reserve indoor or outdoor seating. We reserved a table for 5, but when we got there, it seemed it had defaulted to an indoor table instead of an outdoor one. We preferred to eat outside for brunch since it was a lovely day. As always, they were accommodating and worked it out so we could sit outside. One of the reasons I love to come here for brunch is that I love their eggs benedict and they can do it on a gluten-free bun. Today when I ordered it they came back and told me that the potatoes would be cross contaminated. I had not been told this before which sliced me, but I asked for a fruit substitute and we were fine. They can back again and said they were out of the gluten-free bread. This time we were not fine. How could they be out at 10am? Because it was a party of 5, I agreed to have the dish with no bread, but my wife decided not to eat at all. If you are gluten-free, I suggest you call ahead because it seem you cannot count on them having gluten-free bread on hand. If you are not gluten-free, then this place definitely needs to be on your list. read more

Restaurant is small and crowded and loud on a Friday night. We had a reservation and although they weren't ready for us when we arrived, they worked very hard to get us at a table quickly. Cocktails were tasty. Crabcakes were a nice portion with very little filler. The servers rushed us through our meal because the wait was so long and the tiny space was very full. The corn chowder was good although extremely heavy, and the salmon that came on top of the Caesar salad was very small, probably 4oz at most. For a historic restaurant in DC, it comes down to the details like stale croutons out of a bag, butter still in the Sysco packets in a bowl, and chipped glass table tops. Fun historical spot I highly recommend checking out at least once while visiting Georgetown! Definitely make reservations because it is very busy and has people waiting by the door 24/7. I couldn't believe they didn't charge extra for the sweet potato waffle fries. The reuben wasn't bad, but nothing blew me away. Standard sandwich that I wouldn't order again if I were to dine here. Came in on a Monday ,late afternoon, was able to get a table outside. It's in a lovely spot, right in the middle of Georgetown. The outdoor seating was very pleasant. The service was very good, I like how our waiter was attentive, but not pushy. My friend and I were able to enjoy our dinner and conversation without feeling rushed. The food was delicious! Take a trip back in time going to this historic Georgetown spot. Had a nice bourbon cocktail that had some refreshing fruit flavors. The oyster soup had just the right amount of fishyness. Not as heavy as clam chowder. I would absolutely get it again and I'm not even a big oyster fan. Steak was cooked medium to perfection with a nice char on the outside. Would have wanted the mashed potatoes to be a bit more creamy. Soft shell crab was a special on the menu and it did not disappoint. Lots of recent poor reviews, and I understand why. They seem to have raised the prices quite a bit, and there is a 5% administrative ( junk) fee on top of that. Made a reservation several days in advance, they would not seat my friend who is in her late 70s until I arrived a few minutes later. We were seated in a small booth next to the kitchen. We both ordered the avocado toast. And neither of us liked the odd sweet taste, which really detracted from all of the other flavors. It took quite a while to be able to tell our server, who otherwise was quite good. By that point, my friend had finished hers and I was halfway through mine. He said he would ask the kitchen and told us it was honey. Honey is not listed in the ingredients on the menu, and neither one of us liked it, but no substitutions or other accommodation was offered. It is prominently displayed on the menu, but I dislike and avoid restaurants that charge junk fees. Just raise the prices, they have been raised quite a bit already, couldn't Martin's incorporate that extra 5%? In addition, I don't think it's even legal to charge tax on that junk fee. As a native Washingtonian, I have enjoyed coming to Martin's many times over the years, but I'm unlikely to return anytime soon. read more

The wait was supposed to be an hour but we got seated in about 30minutes. The greeter is super unfriendly though and the restaurant seems unorganized. We ordered the calamari and shrimp and the Reuben sandwich. The calamari and shrimp were nothing special and didn't taste fresh. The Reuben was good flavor wise but the bread was wet enough that we ended up just eating the meat out of it. The tables are jam packed together. The stairs totally he restrooms are a safety hazard. The onion soup which I heard was a must was ordered by both members of our party and were not consistent in taste or appearance and was nothing special. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating even though we didn't have a reservation. The food was good. I've been going to Martin's forever, and it's a neighborhood institution. It's warm, friendly, great for comfort food: burgers, omelets, steaks, big salads, crab cakes, French onion soup.
