Well, when we got here, the host was adamant the place was fully booked. We were sat in the bar for this reason. We had the unfortunate luck to be served by Belva, nice kid, but should never serve food. He not only spilled melted butter onto my husband's pants, he also spilled it onto my sandals. The overall service experience was shit. I don't say this lightly but our server was slow and clumsy. Belva offered to buy my Arnold Palmer to help with all the trouble. I think the dry cleaning bill was over $50 and my sandals cost $250. Yah, I don't think an Arnold Palmer (non-alc) is going to cover that cost! We noticed that the appetizers were pretty quick to arrive and they were good, however, the main courses took forever. We were going to order dessert but wanted to just give up on this place. Our entrees tasted good, but overall, the experience was a shit show. The restaurant never filled up and we saw the host turn away multiple groups even though it was still early. What an experience. It was my first time dining at Kingbird. It was a great time. The service was impeccable. We were immediately greeted by the hostess who was very friendly. Then we were greeted by our waiter who was very attentive, knowledgeable and very entertaining. He made sure that we didn't want for anything. Truly the best customer service. The food was fantastic. We started off with drinks. Our waiter recommend the espresso martini for me and the Barrel and Branch for my friend. Both drinks were delicious. I particularly liked the Barrel and Branch I was a sweeter play on an old fashioned. For food I ordered the Ora King Salmon and my friend ordered Osso Buco. The salmon came with pistachio crusted salmon with eggplant. The salmon was cooked to perfection and the eggplant was very flavorful. My friend really enjoyed the Osso Buco which was veal. It was a good play on spaghetti. The ambiance was very aesthetically pleasing. As soon as we walked it we immediately felt like we were in a very high class restaurant. I wish I took more pictures of the restaurant but atmosphere was very high class. Overall, it was a great experience. It's right next to the Kennedy center which is very convenient. We went to see Chicago at the Kennedy center so choosing King Bird was a no brainer. I recommend trying this restaurant if you are in the area in general or going to see a show at the Kennedy center. We came to kingbird prior to a show at the Kennedy center. There is a small limited menu but the options were plentiful for us. In our party people had the steak, salmon, pasta, burrata salad, fries, and vegetables. We had planned for 2 hours in the restaurant and they knew we were there prior to a show and they provided great service in ensuring we were out in time. They also showed us a back door they typically let people walk through to get to the Kennedy center in a quick shot walk. We went to Kingbird again the other night with 4 of our best friends. My opinion of this restaurant has changed a little - but just a little. The dining room is beautiful and sexy. Perfect for an impressive night out. It was cold and icy out but the dining room was nicely full. A good sign. But the menu has been shortened a lot. There were none of the other dishes that I have enjoyed there in the past. The server did not know if they shortened the menu because of the time of year or because they were not able to get all the ingredients. Either way, there were precious few main courses to choose from. For my appetizer, I chose the burrata. It was divine! A luxurious ball of stracciatella!!! So beautiful and perfectly presented! It was accompanied by some beautiful veggies and herbs so gingerly dressed that I knew a master did it. It really was a beautiful dish and the 3 of us who ordered this burrata were very happy! However, 5 out of the 6 of us ordered the pappardelle. Maybe it was too much at one time but the servings were a little messy and not similar in size. Also, I hate to nitpick but - isn't that the reason for a review - there just was NOT enough sauce to cover all the pasta on my dish. So, this main course was a little disappointing. None of our friends said anything but I hated that we took our best friends to Kingbird and vouched for its quality only to be a little disappointed. ***3 1/2 stars*** What a bucket list afternoon. Kingbird was the first stop on an epic Washington DC inauguration weekend adventure, entirely because of where it was located - without getting too far into the political weeds, I'm a big Nixon fan so the Watergate had to be visited at some point, even given that it began a two-year descent into executive privilege madness. Anyway. The historic context was really all I knew about Watergate, so it was a pleasant surprise to find out that it's also a legit bougie 5-star hotel; my top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality was in her element. We were warmly greeted by roughly five or six staffers before making our way to Kingbird, which wasn't too far from the main entrance. Aside from the gorgeous logo featuring a bird wearing a top hat, Kingbird's interior looks like a lot of other hotel bar/restaurants (not a negative). Since it's a higher-end lodging, the decorative scheme reflects that. We weren't sure where the day was going to take us so we opted to sit at the bar for a light bite and drinks. I will say this - I don't think it would matter who was getting inaugurated, but on a weekend like this, it was PRIMO people watching. I had to remind my chum not to make eye contact with the guy two seats down nervously cradling seven spiral notebooks. Wild times. We both ended up getting Arancia Viales, which featured bourbon and an emphasis on orange. Very well made. The drinks came with a strip of bacon as part of the garnish, which I think they should have made reference to on the menu since my chum doesn't eat pork (no matter - I took one for the team). I didn't really see a reason to have it on there, honestly - it came off as gimmicky and didn't add anything to either the taste or presentation. On the other hand, the second garnish (a flower) DID; the floral scent complemented the drink perfectly, making the bacon inclusion all the more mystifying. I was SUPER tepid on the cheese plate we got, which is usually a safe, go-to for me. On a personal palate level, I wasn't crazy about the dark bread having nuts and/or berries in it, especially when you have so much other activity happening on the plate - you don't need to add to it with the bread. The bread should balance everything, not create the drama. I'm always thrilled to see honeycomb on these plates, which is in my opinion the most underrated charcuterie/cheese board item. Every place should have it. The cheeses themselves though were good, and represented a variety of flavors. Unsurprisingly, the star of the show was the service. Hospitality was in abundance (I'm sure it helped we were sitting in the metaphorical catbird seat aka the bar), and there was never a moment where we weren't able to be immediately assisted if the need presented itself. Top-level all the way around. As hotel bars go, this honestly wasn't that memorable - the Watergate itself was really the selling point. I'd come back for a drink or two, but with so many other options in the area I'm more likely to just sneak back into the building for a "I Stole This From the Watergate Hotel" pen next time I'm in town. read more

Update 31 March 2025: Attended an event with a michelin star rated chef at Kingbird and it was awesome. The meal was omakase style with wine pairing and so delicious. The small intimate setting was fun. We were able to talk to other guests, servers and the chef as well. The experience was well worth the cost and the partnership brought another level to Kingbird. I would definitely come back to Kingbird for dinner. Maybe even try out a snow globe rental in the winter. Thanks for a great experience! read more

We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. We all ordered the afternoon tea (high tea, as we also had champagne), and it was definitely a great experience overall! First off, the vibe was great-- everything was modern and airy, and the view of the river was a great touch. Service was good too-- we just wished the champagne turnover speed was a bit faster, but we really liked how everyone was super knowledgeable about the different tea options! As for the afternoon tea set, it was super filling. Be ready to ask for a take out box, as we were too full by the time we were eating the scones! I really enjoyed the salmon sandwich, scones, and dessert options. The tea, however, was so so. I got the l'oriental green tea, which was light and nice, but nothing too special. I've seen better tea options at the other afternoon tea places I've been (Ritz London, TWG Singapore), but that could just be a personal preference. Kingbird is a nice restaurant inside the Watergate. It's a good option if you want higher-end dining (with a price to go with that...) before a show at the Kennedy Center. They had a three-course prix fixe menu the night we went and I'd recommend that if you go. We started with Quilt, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley that was worth it. For our three courses, we had Grilled Kale Caesar, Pasta Carbonara and Black Forest Tart, and Shrimp Cocktail, Salmon, and Honey, Peaches & Cream. These can be had as individual items off the regular menu but is more reasonable when offered as a prix fixe. read more

The Kingbird restaurant in the Watergate hotel was nice although I was only there for breakfasts, which are NOT complimentary with a reservation. A plate at the breakfast buffet was maybe around $40 each. So for a family of four that might not be the most cost effective option, even though the items at the buffet were basic foods you would find in a complementary breakfast at a hotel and even though the smoked salmon was so salty that it hurt my taste buds. I don't think I've ever had smoked salmon that was that salty. I love lox but this was too much! The scrambled eggs however, were cooked JUST the way I like it, which is pretty rare considering the fact that I'm really picky about how my eggs are made. I really enjoyed the eggs and I was raving about them all week. Even today I wish I could fly back just for the eggs. I remember reading a story about how Kim Kardashian flew somewhere in her private jet just for some cheesecake. I would do that but for the scrambled eggs at Kingbird. I would feel guilty about the environment though. In all seriousness it is hard to make scrambled eggs that are nice and fluffy but they know just how to do it with perfection. read more

The staff was very accommodating as they gave us complimentary fruit and pastries to go along with what we ordered. The prices are a little much but expected at a place like this. I had the cornflake crusted French toast ($21). It was brioche bread with a bananas foster sauce and Chantilly. This was not too bad. There was not enough sauce present as it just seemed to be a bunch of bananas. It was a little dry overall, but I liked the way it was cooked. The Chantilly enhanced the dish regardless. I also tried the chicken and waffles, which was something I would order again. The waffle was fluffy, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. We went for lunch recently & everything one ordered either came out cols, tasteless & carelessly prepared. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Now how could they get that wrong I wonder? It's clear that they make their tea nibbles one day a week and they serve them after they've sat around and gotten dry and unappetizing. This place is mediocre at best, and at these prices, this is a major skip. We went last night for our anniversary dinner; my husband told them ahead of time that we were celebrating AND told the host at the stand upon arrival. Nothing special was done at all, in fact, the service was absolutely dreadful. My husband tried to order 4 different drinks; the server kept coming back saying they were out of whatever was in it so they can't make it. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal: shrimp cocktail and hamachi. When our meals came my husbands steak was burnt to a crisp (ordered it medium) and had no flavor. My bucatini was fine but nothing extravagant. It took the server so long to come back and check on us, I was basically done eating. My husband could not eat the steak. The waiter tried to bring him a sauce that was basically straight up soy sauce. It was awful! The waiter apologized and said "it was on him." However, when the bill came, the steak was still on it ($75 for an inedible steak) with a 20% discount instead...my husband said "try again." For our anniversary dinner we had to haggle with a bill and my husband didn't eat. It was horrible service and mediocre food. No manager came by to apologize and absolutely no mention of a special occasion. Terrible experience and worst service I've ever had!! My wife and I spent our anniversary in the Watergate hotel (which was amazing) and we didn't really want to venture out and away from our amazing balcony for breakfast or brunch, so we ordered room service from Kingbird so we could have our breakfast on the balcony. Once we managed to figure out how to get it ordered and what we could order, everything was great. The food was way better than you might expect from room service, the fact that we could have it on our balcony with a stunning view was amazing, and the service was fast and courteous. The only really frustrating thing was that it was pretty complicated to figure out how to order and what the menu was. The hotel website had no information about it. Eventually we were able to get to the front desk who told us to call the restaurant while they were open and order to our room. Even then, we basically had to call and have the person there talk us through their (quite limited) menu with us to have us pick what we wanted to order. In the end, we got avocado toast, chicken sausage, pork sausage, bacon, and an omelette. The avocado toast was good, but missing something. It was just toast with avocado and some crunchy bits in the top. It felt like it needed a mayo or something on top. The chicken sausage was amazing with an almost-falafel, middle eastern spice. The pork sausage and bacon were yummy, but pretty standard. The omelette was surprisingly good given that they had somewhat limited ingredients, but the feta, tomato and bacon worked really well and it was just a nice, clean dish. Once we figured out what was available and got it ordered, the service was fast and courteous. We had breakfast on a table in our room less than 30 minutes from when we ordered it and the person who brought it was incredibly nice and helped get things set up to make it easy for us to eat on our balcony without being imposing or staying longer than he had to. Really, this would all be a 5-star experience if wasn't for the frustration figuring out how to order and the initial bit of disappointment between what we thought might be on the menu and what was actually available. read more

Kingbird (the restaurant in the lower level of the Watergate Hotel) offers afternoon high tea every weekend. My friend and I decided to celebrate our birthdays with high tea here a few weeks ago. The service was great, the value was good (I'm not sure it's their policy or if we just had the best service ever, but we got unlimited refills of Prosecco with our tea), and the location is great (really cool to be having high tea at the Watergate)! However, the tea was just okay. They advertise it as being "swinging sixties inspired," but that didn't come off at all. Our tea definitely had a Frozen (yes, the children's movie) theme, with characters from the movie on the paper menu and Frozen confetti on the table. This made the tea seem much less high end and fancy! They have a large selection of teas (green, black, white, and herbal), and the Prosecco was nice. However, I found the ratio of sweet to savory items on the tea tray to be off for my preferences (way too many sweets, not enough savory). I did enjoy the savory items (tea sandwiches). We ordered the Bucatini, Brioche Stuffed Chicken, and the Agnolotti. The noodles in the Bucatini were stuck together so it was difficult to eat without it coming up as one big lump. I ordered extra sauce so it made it a little better. The chicken was pretty tasty and I would order again if I returned. The Agnolotti was just average and nothing I would rave about. I was scrolling through Eventbrite and came across a 'Teddy Bear Tea Party' at the Kingbird. Seeing as though I have a 3yo daughter, I immediately called and made reservations for us to attend. The event was held on a Sunday at 2pm - perfect time for afternoon tea with my baby girl. This was our first time at the Kingbird and was thoroughly impressed by the service, our desserts/tea, and the decor. The tea party took place towards the back of the restaurant; however, it was really nice to still hear the live singer that performed throughout the afternoon (she sounded amazing, btw!). While arriving at our table, I could see the Afternoon Tea menus precisely placed on top of our plates along with our fine china sets. I'm not going to lie, seeing the china sets kind of made me nervous --- fine china plus a 3yo that likes to do EVERYTHING herself could have meant a disaster; however, it thankfully was not. Their tea menu is quite extensive and I cannot remember the name of the green tea I ordered but it was nice. We sipped our tea and enjoyed the SCRUMPTIOUS scones, mini savory sandwiches, desserts, and pastries. My daughter even got her very own 3-tier of desserts that she ate all by herself. The restaurant had other parties there, but it was nowhere near packed and not that busy. The decor is nice, hostess was prompt and mannered, and the ambience was perfect. I had made a reservation for 5 well in advance. They sat us but the number of plate settings did not match and they took a while to get us the correct number of silverware, plates, glasses, etc. Our waitress rarely stopped by to check on us and consistently forgot things we asked for (e.g. lemon for our water, extra napkins, condiments, correct number of plates). The food was alright. I got the filet mignon (cooked medium rare) but the temperature seemed a bit off. Otherwise it was flavorful, but the truffle fries were a little bland. We had a rather unusual experience here during restaurant week, but they offered us half off our meals which to me reflects what we encountered was an unusual occurrence. First off, the menu is not very inclusive and the restaurant week menu was even less so. I am vegetarian and my friends only eats halal, so we were only able to order maybe 2 dishes. We tried to get the French Toast. About 30 minutes later, the server says they do not have the ingredients to make it. They allowed to order a modified restaurant week dish. It took approximately 2 hours for us to be served all 3 courses. I tried the squash soup which was very good, the spaghetti (without lobster) and was not impressed, and the creme brûlée which was served cold. You could tell it had been Pre-made in the fridge for awhile. Overall, the food wasn't terrible, but for the high prices the quality and service time needs to be apply to be improved. read more

I came to Kingbird for their Cherry Blossoms Afternoon Tea on a Saturday afternoon (the day of the Cherry Blossoms Parade) and I had a good time! The cost of the afternoon tea was $50 (way cheaper than the cherry blossoms tea at the Peacock Alley at the Willard) per person and you receive unlimited tea (of your choice, I think they charge if you want to change your tea), your 3-tier afternoon tea sandwiches, and a complimentary glass of champagne (very generous pour). I made a reservation by calling the number provided on the website and this is strictly reservation. You can't just walk in expecting to be seated because they wouldn't have a spot for you. The room was pretty filled when we got there and there are a lot of women enjoying tea and there were guys as well, so this is not just for ladies! I liked the simple set up of the tea room but I wished that they had decorated the tea room with actual cherry blossoms like they do at Peacock Alley. I chose the cherry blossoms tea and I really enjoyed it. The tea was sweet and warm (it wasn't hot which I liked because I hate it when my tea come super hot and I can't drink it). I also liked the sandwiches and the desserts. So if you have never been to a tea party, you start with your sandwiches from the bottom and start with the savory sandwich then you work your way up to the second tier then the top tier. My favorites were the salmon sandwich, the crab cake sandwich, and the macarons. The scones were yummy as well and they weren't too hard or too soft. Please do not come here expecting a full meal, this is an afternoon tea and not lunch. I highly recommend doing this afternoon tea on special occasions because it is definitely pricey. I absolutely loved the macarons, they were just as good as the macarons I get from Laduree in Paris, France! I've had afternoon tea parties in various cities in Europe including one in a very expensive hotel in Paris, and I will say that this one at the Kingbird is better than the one I had in Paris! I took off one star from this review because although everything went great, I didn't feel special when it came to the quality of service. Our server rarely came to check up on us and it wasn't as luxurious as the experience I got in London and Paris. Also, I didn't get anything for my birthday, which I had put a note that it was my birthday but I still didn't get a cupcake or anything (like they do at the Peacock alley). Parking here is pretty easy. There are parking garages next door and they also have valet parking and street parking. We ubered here so we did not use parking. read more

Went here for restaurant week this year. Absolutely OUTSTANDING food. I ordered the squash soup, short rib and chocolate tart. Soup- best squash soup I've had. Hands down Short rib- so tender it just fell apart. One of the best short ribs I've ever had. My fiancé was jealous because he didn't order it haha. Tart- very rich but really tasty. The orange stuff they put on the top was awesome. My fiancé liked his food but not as much as I did. He got the scallops. Which only had three scallops vs my huge portion of short rib. He did enjoy his tuna appetizer. He wasn't a fan of his lemon dessert. The pinta cotta was very firm and slightly overdone I think. read more
