Formerly Hazel, Martocci's opened in April 2023 in Downtown Brattleboro serving the same pizzas as Hazel plus classic Italian fare and dishes as well. The dining room/bar area is very cozy with table seating for around 20 people and 12 seats up at the bar. Since there was a street festival going on outside I made a reservation online and I took a seat up at the bar though I could've sat at a table if I wished. The menu offers 12" and 18" pizzas, create your own or specialty pies, pasta dishes, salads, appetizers & small plates, meat entrees, and desserts. The bar offers cocktails, wine, and beer (8 taps). I decided to order two things on my dinner visit. I started out with a 12" Veggie Pie ($16 plus tax) which was topped with red sauce, spinach, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, kalamata olives, garlic, and mozzarella cheese on the thin firm soft crust, chewy on the edges. I enjoyed half the pizza and had the rest boxed to go. Next, the Sausage Polenta ($18 plus tax) had 2 polenta cakes with a mix of ground sausage, mushrooms, garlic, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese and olive oil. I was too full, so I passed on dessert. The check with tax and before tip was $37.40. Overall, a good relaxed dinner sitting up at the bar. Afterwards, I took a walk outside to enjoy the downtown festivities.

Our server was lovely! Everyone was so friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is light and calm; an open, modern pizza place with a full bar. The IPA I had from New Zealand was the best IPA I've EVER had. The pizza was delicious. The crust was so crisp without any burned parts. The caesar salad was so good- crunchy chickpeas instead of chicken?! More places should do this! The meatball app was also delicious- garnished with fresh basil and cheese. The sauce tasted so fresh! Will be back as often as we can manage.

I wish I thought to take more pics, but this is the first of three amazing calzones I've had, No, not all at once.

Okay, it starts with a confession: I'm an unapologetic pizza snob and, yes, it's all about New Haven apizza for me. Sadly, living in Vermont for 25 years now, I still regularly go back to New Haven for some Modern Apizza or Sally's. Other than the now-ended Rigani Pizza, the best I could do up here was adequate Greek-cut thick pies and anotehr downtown restaurant that makes a decent wood-fired pie. Occasionally Hazel (the former name of Martocci's) would get it right, but it was hit-or-miss for me. So...with that said, a friend brought me in one night to give the new Martocci's a try here in downtown Brattleboro. Being open-minded and forever hopeful about good pizza in my area, we had a couple of really exceptional points of local Vermont beer at the bar. I soon met Shelby, one of the owners with her husband, Paul, and before long she was graciously enduring my "all-pizza-is-inferior-to-New Haven-apizza....but I'm hopeful" schpiel. I told her I was open to falling in love with their pizza, and asked some questions about how they do it, from the ground up. Just from hearing her list specific ingredients, talk about the dough process, and their solid sourcing I knew they were pretty passionate and smart about what they were doing. I ordered a large pie....kept it simple with just eggplant (cooked to perfection)......and soon there it was. To be honest, the first bite was quite positive, but I was going to do this analysis fully. Before long I was one slice down and feeling pretty happy about it. For me, the toppings, the sauce and the cheese were outstanding. Lots of flavor in the sauce, though an actual sauce and not the simple San Marzanos+oregano+salt on apizza. By the time I was onto the second slice, I was feeling pretty relieved that I wasn't going to have to offer candid-yet-negative feedback to Shelby. My only iffy feedback was that that's not the dough I'm after.....tasty and nice consistency, but not the chewy, high-hydration, 3-day proof dough I like the best. That's not to say that I expected that, but just describing my dream pie. BTW: I wound up taking some home, and loved every bite. While I was eating, Shelby and I talked more about the pizza, the restaurant, the family-owned and run nature of it, and her hopes for the place. You could just feel the hard work ethic and the family vibe in the restaurant. Casual yet on top of things, and a lot of laughing. These people are golden. A hard-working Vermont family genuinely trying to make you good food. I've now been back many times, and I'll tell you this: the pizza was very good, but the calzones are genius! And huge! So many other touches, a fun and funny wait staff, great craft beer choices, and pretty much everything I'd hoped for. So I'd encourage visitors to try them out, and locals to support these good people as they grow this new venture. Try it yourself and see if you agree.

Good pizza (have always done carry out). Enjoyed their take out margaritas when they were offering them.

Good. Pizza is still really good. Not as much a fan of the new menu as I was they previous place, but they're solid.

A lovely restaurant, classy & approachable with a lively atmosphere & fun vibe. Great, tasty…read moreSpanish tapas, we usually go during a birthday or celebration. Food is adventurous & bold; memorable meals over the years: Fried Goat cheese with charcuterie meats, manchego cheese & french bread, have to do The Bocado Experience for 2 or 4, Jamon Iberico, Pato (duck pastrami w sherry glaze), tuna poke, atun de bocado (seared yellowfin saku tuna), braised pork belly, Spanish octopus, mussels in cream sc, twin mini Kobe style beef burgers, venison, fried calamari, lollipop lamb chops, seared beef tenderloin, classic paella & Paella de Mariscos, & baked flan for dessert. Just so fascinating - their chefs can put out such tasty small plates so quickly, each packed with such fresh & exciting flavors, always cooked to perfection (never over or under cooked). Get the sangria pitchers, bar is always packed & hopping. Dining room just got a refresh, but was beautiful even before with a great atmosphere also. Our least favorite was the rabbit (way too many small bones to pick out).

Okay, well. DO NOT EXPECT TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR FOOD & HAVE YOUR CAMERA EAT FIRST here (this also…read moreincludes the cocktails). The food presentation just aint it.....there is none. I would suggest to them using smaller appetizer platters so the food doesn't look like it got slapped on them straight outta the pan with literally no care & respect for the ingredients. The Gambas Al Ajillo deserved more than 2 pieces (NOT SLICES) of croutons, The pork belly & polenta dish was unbalanced & there was hardly any polenta to be evenly shaped between a party of 4, It was the saddest looking octopus dish I've ever seen next to a pile of spices potatoes. Just because it is a tapas wine bar, doesn't mean they're given a pass to ignore how appealing it looks to guests. Hit or miss for the mai tais (the bartenders need to work on their ratios). Bcuz why am I can just order a screwdriver with the amount of orange juice we were given. HOWEVER, everything is edible & incredibly delicious. The authentic Spanish flavors absolutely shine thru!
