Took my Mommy Dearest to Chinatown to get her hair and nails done. After that she wanted to have Udon noodles. And I remembered Muragame Udon is nearby and since I haven't ventured out to at this location before. I had the number 1 Nikutama and Mommy Dearest had the number 3 Beef with dashi broth and of course some tempura goodness on the side. The portion size is filling and the flavor was spot on. Perfectly balanced broth and not overpowering. The noodles have a great bounce to it. The restaurant is busy but luckily for us we went after the lunch rush so we didn't have to wait much. Mommy Dearest commented how she remembered the lines is always a mile long and out the door at the Waikiki location. This was when she worked in Waikiki. Incredible operation. We were at the back of the line a block from the entrance, and it took 45 minutes to wait in line, order, eat, and leave. You pick your base udon and there is a tempura buffet you can select what else (and prices vary from like $2 to $6 depending on what you select). They tell you where to sit and the udon broth is delicious! It tasted delicious and we had leftovers. The original size is pretty substantial. This udon is something else!!! I first tried this place at their Waikīkī location and instantly got hooked, so when I found out they had this location, I've been coming here ever since! (Because Waikīkī iykyk!) One of the best parts? Free and super easy parking! It's perfect for pickup orders since the entrance is literally right next to the parking lot door. (Pro tip: have your license plate number handy and ask the cashier for parking validation when you pay!) Parking time is limited (check the signs) but I usually order to-go, and have plenty of time. They package everything perfectly separated so nothing gets soggy. I always add some tempura on the side depending on what I'm feeling that night... they've got a great variety, and it's always crispy and fresh. The flavors are consistently bursting, rich, and comforting, you can taste the freshness in every bite. My favorite udon place outside of Japan! This location is much more lowkey and not as crazy as the one in Waikiki. The service and the food is exactly the same without that painful line out the door. I will say it does get busy but there was ample seating. There's music playing over the speakers and lots of people chatting, which is expected with any fast service type place. The noodles, broth, and tempura are perfect. You know what you're getting every time and the quality is perfect especially for it being so reasonably priced. The restaurant was beautiful, similar to what I would expect to experience in Japan (I never been), but I suspect with more of a friendlier staff. It was first time and the women taking the orders did not seem happy to explain what or how the options worked. She stared at me with a blank look and then turned to the other woman there and spoke a different language (assuming about me, not being quick enough maybe?). Despite that encounter everything smelt and looked delicious you can also pick from a Tempura bar for additional cost. Seemed like they couldn't kept up with the people but we found some options. It feels like a buffet-style restaurant with a more personalized touch. We got the curry udon with beef and the chicken katsu curry. The beef udon had a nice kick to it and was really good. The creamy tonkatsu broth was delicious, but I wish it had a richer or bolder flavor. They offer green onions and/or tempura flakes for a topping on any of the udon. Tempura bar is grab and go with a decent selection. It's cafe style seating so hopefully you can grab a table for the size of your party. Even with the lunch rush, we were able to secure a table for 3 with minimal wait. Would recommend! I plan to try a different broth next time though. read more

I had dinner with hubby here last week. I love Marugame Udon. The udon noodles are made fresh in house and their broth is really good. I prefer this location to the one in Waikiki, because the one in Waikiki always has a line. The only problem we had was finding parking. Come to find out that they offer free parking now in one of the buildings. See pic attached. We got the regular Nikutama $11.15 and the large Curry Nikutama $12.95. The Nikutama contains sweet beef and a soft boiled egg. We also got a squid tempura $2.25, sweet potato tempura $2.00 and shared the Iced Calamansi-Ade $3.50. We enjoyed the udons. The tempura was ok. The batter was on the heavy side. I like mine thin and crispy. The calamansi drink was the best. However, the drink was 3/4s full of ice. The creamy broth was over-seasoned, so I know it's not for me. Luckily, they have plenty of other options on their menu to satisfy almost any palette. I had watched so many YouTube videos about where to eat in Hawaii and Marugame Udon was featured in so many videos so I knew I had to absolutely check it out when I would visit! I went around 4:30pm and the line was not crowded, but apparently the line can extend pretty during peak hours, but they are super efficient and I'm sure it would pass by fast and its worth it! This was such a unique experience. You enter the restaurant and choose which noodle/dish you would like to go and afterwards, you can pick and choose which tempura you would like to eat. I had one of the newer dishes on their menu - Teriyaki Chicken Tartar and it was so great! For tempura, I tried one of Tamogoyaki (Sweet Egg Omelette) and got a sweet potato. Everything was made so freshly and food was delicious. In terms of operations, other restaurants should learn efficiency in terms of delivering high quality food from Marugame because they do it right. read more

It's the same ridiculously great udon and Ala carte tempura add ons as the Kuhio street restaurant minus the INSANE lines and the nonexistent parking in the heart of Waikiki. We got here at 6pm about an hour before closing and although not all the tempura offerings were on display you can order them and they'll make it them and there. The staff was very friendly (probably because it wasn't very busy) and the service was quick - three minutes from walking in to sitting down with food. Ordered the BK udon with shrimp tempura, soft boiled eggs, tempura tamagoyaki, and zucchini. With drinks and tip around $20/person. Totally positive experience. Kudos Marugame Udon!! Took a really late lunch at work and food places were closed. Thank goodness Marugame Udon was open. I placed an online order and it was ready by the time I got there which is about a 7 min walk. It was 2:30 in the afternoon so it wasn't busy at all. I got the Nikutama and added some shrimp tempura and crab tempura. Love the sweetness and flavor of the broth. always a 10/10 experience for my family and 3 little children. Consistency is key for us and it never disappoints. They love the kake udon, shrimp tempura, gyoza. We love the tan tan udon and my absolute favorite is the curry udon!! The staff is so nice and always willing to help us out since we can't carry all the trays by ourselves or stand around to fend for a table of 5.
