Tonkatsu Miso with ONLY half an egg
    Doug T.

Came to Onoya Ramen for a quick meal. Dedicated parking out back. Clean spacious table seating. Brightly lit interior. Wait staff greeted us quickly. No reservations needed. Overall the noddle soup was warm not as hot as I would have expected Good noodles. But one bowl of noodles was a bit clumped together not fully separated. Needed to be cooked a bit longer Garlic chips added texture but they did taste a bit burned. Broth flavor was good for both Char sui was thick and meaty with good fat balance Mushrooms added complexity to the bowl One POINT deducted! The menu clearly shows two halves of an egg. IE an entire egg. See images of ramen bowl and menu. Both bowls came with only one half of an egg. Clearly misleading. We ordered... Tonkatsu Black Tonkatsu Miso

I've been to the Kapahulu one which is good but this location is better! They have parking in the back but only a few spots. It was very clean and the staff were welcoming. I had the spicy tonkotsu. It was perfect! Very tasty broth with the perfect amount of spice and a lot of noodles. I had nothing to complain about. I will definitely be back!

The food was good, fast service, but staff could be friendlier. Went in after 8pm. Not too busy.

First time eating at Onoya Ramen. Been hearing a lot of good things word of mouth so I was excited to see for myself. There are a few dedicated parking stalls right behind Onoya; otherwise, lots of metered street parking on S. King. Availability of said parking can be a different story tho depending on what time you go. Hahaha. Got the Tonkotsu Black Garlic...the broth was so good!! Once you know the broth is good, you already know the rest of your ramen is gonna be up to par. Service was good. Food came out rather quickly actually. Interior is brand new. Clean space. Early candidate for best ramen of 2026??

First time trying this new restaurant since they took over the spot. Very popular place, slight wait for about. Parking is shared, so it a challenge. Service was average maybe its because it was busy night. I thought the food was just average. Nothing that really stood out. So such a popular place, I thought it would be better.

As expected, Onoya continues to deliver consistent ramen at an efficient rate. Just like the Kapahulu location, the service and product delivered here is great. The same thing that also follows is limited parking, but it doesn't seem as congested as Kapahulu, which is nice. Parking is in the back, and you can turn right off King St and then another right into the lot. It's shared with Ojisan. Our favorites are the Spicy Miso and Tonkotsu Black Garlic. Noodles are cooked great, meat is delicious - not too dry, and taste of the broth is tasty - well balanced and not too salty. The Spicy Miso can be spicy, so be warned. Our only gripe is the misleading menu pictures. Why are all of the ramen pictures (ones with egg) show a whole egg yet they only deliver half an egg..? I know this sounds petty but shouldn't you expect to receive the ramen being pictured? Put it this way - if you saw a picture of a loco moco with two eggs but only got one, wouldn't you be disappointed? You're getting ripped off HALF the avian protein you were expecting. We expected a full egg but only got half. My suggestion to Onoya: remove the other half of the egg in the pictures, and I will gladly shut up... Or add the other half of the egg to all ramens :) Staff is attentive and efficient! Prices are just about right for ramen these days. I think prices are justified (minus the missing half egg)! Glad Onoya got to open another location and I am happy they are so near in town. For a late night or convenient spot for ramen, definitely consider them!

I've always gone to their Kapahulu location which sometimes is hit or miss on the parking. Glad they have this location as well. The broth is what makes everything come together nicely and I like mine with a kick of spice. Service is always spot on.

Owner/chef Naoyuki Ono had originally opened Sanoya Ramen in McCully for more than 30 years. His 3 sons were involved in the business, learning new ramen techniques in Japan to bring a more modern style to the restaurant. Onoya Ramen was once in the Waikiki Yokocho Food Hall, which had closed permanently, and in the Shirokiya Japan Village Walk that temporarily closed due to Covid. Onoya Ramen's owner and chef is Naoyuki Ono who opened its doors in Honolulu in Mar 2021 in Kapahulu. He expanded Onoya Ramen to a 2nd location in McCully on 12/2/24 and took over the space formerly occupied by Sanoya Ramen. This review is for the Onoya Ramen in McCully. This location, in honor of its 1st anniversary, was offering a BOGO free ramen for dine-in customers from 11/19-22/25. Yes, were happy to be there! The name of the restaurant incorporates the owner's last name, "Ono," combined with the Japanese suffix, "ya," which means shop. Onoya Ramen's signature dish is its tonkotsu ramen. The tonkotsu broth is made from scratch and although it takes long hours of boiling the pork bones, the restaurant uses a special machine to prepare the broth faster and in larger quantities. A varied selection of ramen is available: tonkotsu tan tan, tonkotsu spicy, tonkotsu black, classic, miso, spicy miso, and gekikara. Most of the ramen dishes include, char siu, half egg (ajitama), bean sprouts, fried garlic chips, wood ear mushrooms (kikurage), bamboo shoots (menma), green onions, and a sheet of nori. They also offer weekday lunch specials of donburi, daily lunch ramen sets, appetizers, Japanese drinks, curries, and a kids' menu. As this restaurant was offering the BOGO free ramen for its 1st anniversary, a short line developed outside the front main entrance. Despite having a Yelp Waitlist system in place, the restaurant found it easier for diners to line up on a 1st come, 1st serve basis. We waited for about 15 min before it was our turn to be given a table. This offer was apparently low key to minimize large crowds that the restaurant could not handle. We ordered the following: * Black garlic tonkotsu ramen. The pork bone broth contained garlic oil and topped with fried garlic chips, seared pork belly chashu, bean sprouts, kikurage wood ear mushrooms, nori, ajitama seasoned egg, and green onions. The succulent pork belly has a melt-in-your-mouth fattiness, and the ajitama and garlicy pork broth are delicious! Served piping hot, the flavors and seasonings made this ramen a little spicy and was perfectly delicious! * Miso ramen. It was topped with chasui, bean sprouts, menma, sweet corn, green onions, and an Onoya egg. Hubby's choice, and although he said it was a little salty, which miso is, he still enjoyed it, as he loves miso. It was served piping hot! Customer service was on point, as our server promptly took our orders, served our orders within a reasonable time, refilled our water glasses periodically, asked if everything was okay, and processed our bill. When asked, the server enrolled us in their loyalty program using our phone number. When this location first opened, there were issues of waiting times, staff not properly trained, and the ramen broth being lukewarm. These were opening issues that have been worked out with proper training and are no longer probemmatic. The interior dining area is spacious, clean and bright. There are a few tables that line the perimeter of the glass windows that I particularly did not like. If you are dining at these tables, and because there were no curtains, those waiting for a table can watch you eat from the outside. I can't complain, as it's a table, but still... Onoya Ramen is open Mon to Fri 11a to 2p and 5p to 10p; Sat/Sun 11a to 10p. Limited free parking is available in the back in designated stalls, as parking is shared with other businesses. Don't try to park in another business' stall, as while we were there, they had someone move their car, as they were not in the correct stall. Street parking is also available. We look forward in returning to try their other ramen offerings, lunch specials, and appetizers! We are delighted that Onoya Ramen is successful with its 2nd location and look forward to supporting this local business! Support local!

BOGO Deal with Drink Specials Until Nov 22 (Saturday)

I used to frequent the Kapahulu Onoya, but after the last disappointing visit I basically put myself on a ramen sabbatical. Then this week's BOGO ramen deal appeared and it was too hard to ignore. Only till Saturday! Service was friendly and fast once seated, but the wait? I clocked just over 30 minutes at 9 PM, so if you show up during actual peak hours expect to wait awhile. I ordered the Tonkotsu Black, hoping for the garlic bomb I remembered. Instead, it landed a bit saltier and more bitter than I had hoped. The tonkotsu itself and the egg were solid wins, but the noodles were a shade past al dente for my taste. Overall 3.5 but without the BOGO deal & $3 Draft Kirin, It would have been a solid 3. Their style of ramen might just not be for me.

2 great standouts at this location! The yuzu shoyu ramen is a delicious bowl of broth, curly ramen noodles, a jammy egg, charsiu pieces, topped with green onion. The yuzu flavor was dominant and made the entire bowl very tasty. Second, the chicken katsu was one of the best I've had in a while. The chicken was juicy yet the outside was very crispy and had a great color fry to it. The fact that the AC is strong makes the warm bowl of ramen even more enjoyable. Service is fast and efficient. They have a small parking lot in the back but at least there is one!

I really enjoyed their Garlic Black Broth Ramen rich, flavorful and definitely something I'd come back for. We tried a few appetizers but they didn't quite meet expectations for the price, so I'd personally stick with the ramen, which is clearly their strength. Service was impressively fast and professional, and that's something I truly appreciate about this restaurant. The ambience is cozy, with a small parking area in the back that fits about 3-5 cars. If those spots are taken, parking at Times Supermarket is a convenient option. Overall, I love their ramen and the great service, and I'd return for the dishes they do best.

It's been several months since the last time we came here for ramen, so this was the perfect time on a rainy and windy afternoon. They conveniently offer reservations thru the Yelp app, so I made one for the 3 of us (me, my daughter, and Gdaughter), and we headed down. The parking is in the small lot behind the bldg, where there are several spots reserved for them. The dining room was only about half full at 12:30, but it soon filled up while we were there. I guess a lot of people had the same idea. The lunch specials are convenient, because you can add gyoza with a choice of either a chicken karaage, char siu, or gyu (beef) donburi (rice bowl) for just an added $3.50. They have a kid's menu that include gyoza and also a Capri Sun juice. I ordered the tonkotsu spicy miso ramen, my daughter had the special mabo tofu ramen, and we ordered the kid's shoyu ramen for the baby. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was so good. We couldn't finish everything, so they provided take out containers and a bag for our leftovers. Great food at a good price. (Sorry for the mess left by the baby)

If you're looking for big bold flavors and a good hangout spot, I recommend trying Onoya Ramen. We made reservations for 4 people on the Yelp app for a Friday evening at 5:30 pm and were quickly seated. The staff were friendly and efficient. There is limited parking behind the restaurant so I do recommend coming in early. You can also find parking along King Street. What I like about Onoya is that you can customize the spice level for each of their ramen from a scale of 1 to 5. Even if there is a spice level designated, you can ask the server to change the spice level. We ordered the Signature Onoya Gyoza, calamari, Tonkotsu Black Garlic (level 3), Tonkotsu Spicy (level 2), Shoyu Ramen and Shoyu Ramen/Curry Rice combo. The gyoza was crispy on the outside, lots of filling on the inside. The calamari had a good chew. The curry was good, nothing too special. The ramen noodles had great texture, nothing over or under cooked. The broth, especially for the Tonkotsu Black Garlic and Tonkotsu Spicy was a little oily, but packed so much flavor. I like spicy so I went with a level 3, but next time I'll try level 4! All this went well with their many flavors of Chu-Hi. We tried their Calpico, Yuzu and Lychee flavor. Will definitely come back again and try more of their appetizers!

Parking is still small and can fill up when it's busy (you also aren't allowed to park in the Church parking lot) If you haven't eaten here before, I would suggest looking on their website at the waitlist to see how many people are on there prior to going there as they can get really busy. Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

I still haven't tried their Beefy King ramen with all the items on top! I did try their beefy seabura. I want to try here again especially the appetizers before they close this month.

The service was phenomenal from start to finish, which made the whole experience even better. I ordered the Beast Bowl, and it was rich, hearty, and packed with flavor. The bowl comes with brisket, short ribs, and oxtail won tons, along with bean sprouts, wakame, sesame seeds, green onion, ginger, and a soft egg. The broth was savory and comforting, the meat was tender, and the toppings added a nice balance of texture and freshness. Definitely a satisfying bowl if you want something bold, warm, and filling. Great spot for ramen, drinks, and a relaxed meal downtown.

I would have said 4.5 had I not noticed the large dead b52 on the floor near my seat when we were seated. Aside from that, the place looked clean. I mean.. we are in Chinatown. So.. We had the shrimp gyoza, lobster shumai, crispy duck tacos, smoked octopus, and wagyu steak cubes. Appy dishes come with 3 pieces each. The crispy duck tacos were my fave. Very flavorful. Loved the textures in that one. Lobster shumai and shrimp gyoza were good. The octopus was tender and flavorful. My Samurai X drink was yummy. My brother had the Midorikawa that was refreshing. I would come again.

The Good: * One of my favorite dishes is the cold chicken noodles with dipping sauce. It comes on a bed of freshly cut cucumbers & noodles if you wish. Literally is such a clean delicious dish. No one else makes this kind of dish. I highly suggest if you don't wanna eat ramen that day, but you want a good stack of noodles and protein. * The tan tan ramen is the basic good stuff that never gets old. * I have also tried the sour/spicy clear brother ramen and that was real interesting and good, but I gotta be in the mood for that one The Bad: * sometimes it's so busy! gotta wait for a table The Weird: * the menu is getting larrrrrrrrrge, screaming that the restaurant is run by Chinese really lol

Food was decent and Portion was reasonable. What I didn't like was how they kept coming up to our table and trying to take away our plate and bowl as if we were finish. Not once but 3x. Seriously, I still had ramen and char sui in my bowl. Let me finish!!!. It felt like they they were trying to rush us and mind you it wasn't busy at all. To add to it, when did they start automatically adding 15% gratitude for a party of 2. I get if its a big party but for 2 or even if by yourself is unbelievable. Save yourself the trouble and eat at another ramen spot. There is a few good ones around ala moana area or in the food court as well.

Consider me a fan of…read moreTsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie, especially with the affordable dinner set meals that are offered on a daily basis. With this much food, your entire party could share a full meal and still be satisfied with the diverse menu options that are offered. Located on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, along the busy corridor of Kalakaua Avenue, this is the second stateside location of TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie after successfully opening in the heart of New York City. Originally founded in Osaka, Japan, TsuruTonTan specializes in authentic handmade udon, where the noodles themselves take center stage. Their goal is to have each bowl thoughtfully crafted and topped with a wide variety of ingredients, from aromatic bonito flakes and savory kombu kelp to locally sourced vegetables and meats, all carefully selected to complement the restaurant's high-quality noodles. The name TsuruTonTan draws inspiration from the sounds associated with the art of udon making. In Japanese, "Tsuru" represents the sound of slurping noodles, "Ton" evokes the kneading and shaping of the dough, and "Tan" signifies the cutting of the noodles. Together, these three sounds embody the spirit of TsuruTonTan and its dedication to the craft of handmade udon. What drew me into this location, with plenty of options surrounding them was TsuruTonTan's Special Dinner Set, which for a reasonable $38 diners would received no fewer than six menu items starting with their house salad which was fresh arugula lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and a vinaigrette and a small sampling of their Edamame. You also get a choice of Appetizer between chicken, tofu and shrimp tempura, of which I selected their Chicken Karaage. Then for your entrée, diners have the choice between six udons to select from, from your traditional soup based udons to one that particularly stood out to me, their Truffle Cream Udon, so I knew that I was going to order this menu item. As if that wasn't enough food, diners get to order one sushi roll that they handcraft here at TsuruTonTan and I selected their Sunfire Roll, which had a shrimp tempura mixed with cucumber, avocado and topped with spicy tuna. And then, for your final course, diners get to enjoy a scoop of ice cream, of which on this day our only option was rainbow sherbet. The first four courses to be presented to my table were the salad, edamame, Chicken Karaage, and my four slices of the Sunfire Roll. These four entrées probably would have been enough food and I would have been satisfied with my meal overall. The Chicken Karaage were five deep-fried nugget pieces served with lemon and piping hot upon served and the Sunfire Roll was a nice combination of sushi roll flavors. Then came my Truffle Cream Udon, which was topped with balls of crab meat, sliced truffle mushrooms, and shaved parmesan cheese. Creamy and cheesy goodness, this entrée was a hearty and heavy dish that combined the flavors of both Japan and Italy thanks to the heartiness of the udon noodles. The ice cream scoop was a nice touch to end what was already a filling meal. I really enjoyed my meal at TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie with so many menu items to choose from it seems overwhelming. Thankfully they have a number of popular and recommended menu items that any visitor looking for a good meal can choose from. The $38 dinner set created specifically for Hawaii diners, which includes a spicy udon soup and a garlic shrimp rice dish, has already piqued my interest and given me a reason to return. And return I will, as long as the service, prices, and food remain as consistently strong as they are at TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie. Offering elevated comfort food that seamlessly bridges cultures and culinary traditions, it stands out as a unique dining destination well worth revisiting.
