TL;DR Delicious, but pricy, high-quality Japanese offerings. ----- I'm a fan of Rinka, but I feel like the 4.1-star rating as of July 2026 is pretty appropriate. The food is great, but there are so many options for Japanese cuisine in Honolulu that it's hard to stand out, especially if you are on the higher end of the price spectrume. I've visited Rinka twice, and both times were to use a Resy credit. I'm not sure if I would seek out a meal at Rinka if not for those recurring credits. The retaurant is conveniently located in the heart of Kaka'ako behind Whole Foods. I recommend parking in the WF parking lot and taking the stairs or elevators down to the bottom floor. My first visit to Rinka was for dinner with my family and I ordered the Wagyu Sukiyaki set, which was fantastic. The set included the high-quality wagyu sukiyaki along with tempura, sashimi, salad, pickled veggies, rice, miso soup, and couple other small side dishes. Everything was delicious. It's expensive, but I was very full after my meal. So I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off. My second visit was for lunch. I ordered the Tempura lunch set and a la carte Japanese cold soba. Again, the meal was delicious, I was very full, and I enjoyed every bite. All that food plus tax and tip set me back $50. Also surprising that it's been over SIX years since it relocated to Kaka'ako, along Halekauwila, near Whole Foods, on the street level of the Ae'o condo. Time flies cause I swear all these condos just popped up lol. The most convenient parking is in the Whole Foods or Ward theaters lots. Just a minute away. Inside is not too big, but open and spacious with high ceilings. We got seated at the sushi bar with front row seat of the open kitchen and sushi chef (and also a view of all the super fresh and beautiful fish and seafood!). Had to get the Sashimi set (Chutoro, tuna, hamachi, salmon, shrimp, and scallop). All sets come with two small (one bite) sides of your choice. Mostly consists of tofu, vegetable, seaweed dishes. Choice of multigrain or sushi rice (or salad). Udon and Chawanmushi (both can be substituted per the server). Both were simple and good. All the sashimi was ultra fresh, excellent quality, and well prepared. The Beef Sukiyaki was a generous amount of food! Beef was fresh and tender. Sukiyaki sauce was a nice balance of sweet and savory. Nice amount of Chinese cabbage, onions, scallion, and oyster mushrooms. Raw egg was nice. Just wished the pot was a bit warmer. This past weekend, my boyfriend and I came for lunch and encountered several issues: 1. Water wasn't served until after we placed our order. 2. My boyfriend's unagi set arrived 5-7 minutes before my meal. 3. When my food arrived, I found a strand of hair in it. Our server was difficult to flag down, and by then it was too late to have the dish remade without significantly delaying our meal. 4. Our server never checked on our table, despite checking on nearby tables. These issues made it difficult to enjoy a lunch date we had planned days in advance. At the end of the meal, another server noticed we had been waiting a long time for the check and asked if everything was okay. After I mentioned the hair, he brought over the manager, who handled the situation professionally and comped our chicken karaage. Kudos to both the manager and the male server. I genuinely enjoy the food at Rinka, but I can't give it five stars due to the service issues I've experienced during my last two visits. The pre-ordered food appeared to have been made way in advance and was probably sitting in the kitchen for a while. Fried foods, white rice need to be served hot. The udon was served hot. Located in the Wholefood's parking lot, the stalls are spacious and plentiful. The area is pretty safe and you won't be far from your car. The restaurant is located right down stairs--with less than a 5 minute walk. The service is also very respectable. The waiter was very courteous and attentive. There was never a moment when we needed to flag down the waiter or ask for a refill on our water/tea. If you're ever in the Ward area, this is definitely a place you need to try. I recently tried this place for the first time, and the food was amazing. I got the miso marinated butterfish teishoku, and everything in it was great. The butterfish was super tender and tasty, the sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the tempura was perfectly light and crispy. The restaurant itself is very open and inviting, with modern decor. It took quite a long time for our food to arrive (about 30 minutes), which was the one downside. Our waiter was very apologetic, but couldn't explain the delay. Maybe the kitchen was really busy with a private party in the back, but I also wondered if they might have forgotten our order initially. Still, the quality of the food made up for this. Besides presents and a movie, hubs was treated to dinner here for his pre- birthday meal. We arrived before 5 pm along with many other patrons. We were escorted to one of the curtained off seating areas. It wasn't actually private since you could see parties on either side of you through the opening slats and the noise too. Our server came in many times to clear away dishes. The food came out in trickles. My cold soba was the last that arrived out of six of us but the agedashi tofu arrived early with the chicken karaage. One had tempura teishoku, hubs had hamburger steak teishoku, 2 orders of cucumber sushi, 2 pieces of egg sushi and one hot tea. Everyone passed on dessert. read more

I go crazy for a Japanese lunch set. Rinka does them especially well. I got the sukiyaki set, which comes with sukiyaki (beef, konjac noodles, cabbage, and tofu), a soft boiled egg, rice, chawan-mushi (a savory egg custard), miso soup, tsukemono, and two side-dishes of your choice. Every dish on my tray shined and was cohesive with the rest of the meal. The sukiyaki was especially delicious: the dashi rich and the broth itself was not too sweet. My only "complaint" is that portions are quite big. I think Rinka could knock a dollar or two off if they made portions a bit smaller (I couldn't finish my chawan-mushi, miso soup, or sukiyaki). Either come hungry or bring someone with a big stomach! So far, I've tried their sukiyaki, udon, crab-cream croquette, and sashimi sets. All are incredible and I would encourage others to be repeat customers as well. Employees are friendly, but the restaurant is often quite busy at lunch-time, so don't be offended if it's difficult to get the attention of a server. The restaurant is clean and definitely feels more upscale than a traditional bento place. I will obviously be back :) read more

Highly recommend this restaurant at Ward center for lunch. Great for business and friend lunch. Not loud with good spacing between the tables. Def get the lunch special but get there early before it sells out. So much food for a great price. Clean place and friendly staff take care of you. read more
