This is very much a small hole in the wall type of joint that probably not even many of the locals know about. One of my good friends highly recommends this and I have to say, I'm trusting his recommendations from now on because this place was very satisfying. This is straight up a Japanese breakfast joint, but many of their items can be eaten for dinner as well. I was pretty much here for dinner and wanted to get the entree that basically had the works. So I went with the Omurice Curry with garlic rice and added pork cutlet to it. It also came with a side salad. It was a very solid dish that satisfied me pretty well. I also got the takoyaki to share, but ended up take a blurry photo of it so couldn't get a good pic. It was pretty good though. I honestly enjoyed the meal and was very content when I was done. I haven't been to Marulilu Cafe in many years and I was quite disappointed this time around. Upon walking in, the staff who stood behind the counter looked up and looked right back down at whatever she was going. There was no greeting or a nod at all. Even if she was occupied with something, she could have given a nod. As a Japanese restaurant, this should not be the kind of greeting you'd expect to get. I ordered a lavender latte and a mentaiko udon as I was craving for it a lot. The lavender latte tasted like steamed milk mostly and I couldn't even make out that it was a "lavender" latte. I was mostly disappointed with the mentaiko udon. It was so dry that I had to constantly sip on my latte to "moisten" my food. I've had very good mentaiko udons before, even in Greater Vancouver, and they were always creamy with bursts of mentaiko in your mouth. My friend ordered the traditional Japanese breakfast and it was somewhat of a disappointment as well. The egg omelette (tamago-yaki) was so bland and did not have dashi taste. The chilled tofu was also a little bit sad. Where was the dashi sauce? I seriously thought the food could have been done better. I mean, they are a Japanese cafe after all and not some non-Japanese restaurant who is serving Japanese food. Due to the pandemic, I haven't been able to make my annual trip to Japan for 2 consecutive years. I really wanted to like this place - super cute and got the hidden gem vibes - but unfortunately it was just okay. The staff there are super nice and welcoming - I think it may be owned by a family. They recommended getting the Omurice - the curry sauce was good but didn't taste amazing (almost tastes like the cube blocks you get from the grocery store), the egg is over cooked (doesn't break in half to be runny and creamy), and the rice is just white rice. The small details were all very charming. I do warn you that if you get overwhelmed by a lot of options, it may take a while to make a decisio! There are quite a number of pages and options. 1 section for regular breakfast, japanese breakfast, sandwiches, side menu, drinks, and seasonal holiday menu for special items offered only in December. I tried the katsu sandwich and added on a hash brown and miso soup (for fun). I also included photos of the japanese breakfast set -- my sister who tried this dish said it left her feeling *pleasantly* full, and would have been a great first meal to have for breakfast. My brother had the japanese curry and rice (flavour was very savoury and delicious) -- if I were to come back I would definitely order this and finish it all, even though it's a rather big portion! This café is unassuming from the street, but the inside is charming! They have local art on display and some antique accessories. The music choice was so soothing. It's a small, quiet place, and the largest table is for 4, so not a place to go with a big group. When I entered I was greeted very cheerfully by one of the staff members who handed me a menu and explained that I could sit anywhere and come to the front when I was ready to order. This person and the other staff I saw were both so sweet but gave me plenty of space while I ate, which was much appreciated, yet they brought out my dessert shortly after I was finished with my meal and were quick to clean up when other customers left, so they weren't being inattentive. I was impressed with how big the menu was. They have all-day Japanese breakfast, both traditional and Western-style, plus Japanese comfort food like curry, donburi, etc. And on top of the main food, a full coffee/tea bar and a large selection of Japanese desserts. I had the Japanese Style Breakfast with natto. It came out faster than I was expecting. Everything in this was very simple but it was all good, and put together made for an excellent comforting meal. I'm usually indifferent to miso soup, but this was one of the best I've had! I guess I've just been eating mediocre miso soup my whole life, because this was flavourful in a way that I didn't know miso soup could be. It was my first time trying natto and I really liked it! If it's your first time trying it I would suggest taking your first taste before mixing in the mustard, since I found the combination of the natto and the pungent mustard to be a lot to process at first. They go well together once you know what to expect. The breakfast is priced very well for the amount of food you get (~$10), but it was an extra $1.75 to add oshinko on the side, which seems a little steep for the 5 pieces, but since the base price was so low and because having the oshinko really elevates the meal for me, I didn't hesitate to add it. I got the Tiramisu for dessert. It was cute and the different layers were very balanced. Finally, I had a Hojicha Latte to drink. Originally I wanted to get the Lavender Latte, but I wanted an unsweetened drink, and the person taking the order told me they don't recommend the lavender unsweetened and suggested I could try half sweet, but I just decided to go for something else. The flavour of the hojicha was very pleasant, and I was also glad the almond milk they used wasn't one of the sweetened kinds. The desserts and drinks are also pretty inexpensive, which is especially nice to see for the desserts since they seem comparable to the stuff you see at boutique dessert/coffee shops around the city. I would really recommend this place for simple and hearty Japanese eats in a calm atmosphere. I think if you came here expecting a gourmet culinary adventure you might be left underwhelmed, but (based on what I had) it's a perfect execution of straightforward and unpretentious comfort food, and they offer something unique from other brunch spots, coffee shops, and Japanese restaurants in the city, so I'm very happy to have discovered them. read more

There isn't a country that I've traveled to that doesn't have some sort of Japanese food around, but if you're looking for a cafe that specializes in Japanese breakfast, that's another story. They're hard to come by. Thankfully enough while in Vancouver, we stumbled upon this unassuming spot not only right down the street from our Airbnb but also conveniently located next to the Commercial/Broadway Sky Train Station. What luck! And one of the most unique aspects of Marulilu is that they serve breakfast - Western and Japanese style - all day! While I didn't actually go for a full on breakfast (I almost got the waffles) I made sure to try their hash browns recommended by another Yelper. And boy was I happy I listened to her - you'll be too once you give it a try! Now onto the main dish - my Wild Salmon Risotto! The risotto was essentially a creamy porridge made with puffy rice, smoked salmon bits, and Parmesan cheese which made it all super hearty! The aji fry on top was also a nice touch as it was crispy, meaty, and deboned despite being a mackerel fish. On the other side of the table, my boyfriend ordered the omurice with tomato sauce. It was amazing as well since the egg was fluffy and the tomato sauce was flavored immensely, with a Japanese flair. 3/3 everything was on point. Though it was my last day in Vancouver, I'm happy that I was able to dine here and finish my eating adventure in Canada on a good note. Easily one of my favourite cafes! If you're looking for an authentic Japanese cafe in Vancouver, you can't pick a better place than this one. My favourites: + Japanese breakfast plate + Hojicha latte + Oyako don + Takoyaki They serve their tea lattes both sweet and unsweet, which gives you lots of flexibility with flavour. I prefer the sweet if I'm getting a lighter meal with it but go for unsweetened if I'm going all out! They get pretty busy in the mornings, and it's a smaller cafe so you may have to wait for a seat if you get there around peak breakfast/brunch time. What I love though is that they get your food really pretty quickly so the turnaround is faster than most other places. We popped by for brunch and got a Beef Curry Omurice, a Tomato Omurice, and a Japanese Full Breakfast. These were all around $13. The Japanese curry Omurice was delicious and came with a size salad. The egg still a bit runny and not over cooked - exactly how I like my Omurice egg. The curry wasn't over powering and delicious, complementing the Omurice. If you prefer tomato based sauce, the tomato Omurice is really good - both a bit sweet, south and a bit sweet. This place also offers Natto! Most authentic Tokyo-style cafe in Vancouver! The Japanese breakfast is my go-to, but the omu-rice is also delish. Umai!!

Cute little place on Broadway. This place serves japanese breakfast and lunch! I came here with my aunt, uncle and their son. My aunt ordered a regular breakfast, uncle ordered the donburi, cousin ordered the garlic omurice with mushroom tomato sauce, and I ordered the omu curry rice. Katsu Don This was slightly dry, especially since my cousin and I had a lot of sauce on ours. My uncles dish was only pork cutlets and eggs topped with sweet sauce on top. It didn't have much sauce. I think this dish would have been better with more sauce or even asking for sauce on the side so you can pour it on as you eat. Garlic Omu Rice with mushroom tomato sauce This is what I wanted to order as it sounded really good on the menu. My cousin ended ordering it. It was a large portion and had a lot of sauce! Everyone enjoyed it, especially my uncle. The salad that came with it had barely any dressing. Omu curry rice Mine was like the garlic omu rice except mine was with curry. The curry tasted like it was made with the Glico curry bouillon you can buy to make japanese curry at home. My dad use to buy those bouillon so I know how it tastes. This was good though, but the taste of packaged bouillon threw me off. The salad that came with it had so much dressing. The dressing wasn't really my favorite. The amount poured was not consistent compared to my cousins. Overall I enjoyed my dish more than the tomato sauce one. I'll definitely come back and try something else! read more

We came here for lunch that it was around 2pm, so we didn't have to wait for a table. We could just grab one and sat wherever we wanted. Usually there must be waiting during lunch hours. All servers were friendly and nice. They gave us a menu right after we sat down. We had to order the food at the cashier instead of the server to take the orders at our table. We ordered omu hayashi rice and Japanese style breakfast. Everything tasted good and was above average. The chef cooked quickly and our dishes came to our table quickly as well. The restaurant is very small having limited tables and chairs. They also had a good drink menu. They have a couple drinks every month. I tried their royal milk tea latte after lunch. The royal milk tea latte was alright. The only thing I didn't like was the tables and chairs that were really close by each other. I visited the washroom as well. It was quite messy (haha). I wish their bathroom was a little more clean and organized. This Japanese restaurant is quite unique that you cannot find any other ones like this on West Broadway or in this neighbourhood. It is worth a visit and try their food. read more

A small cafe serving various Japanese dishes! The place is slightly rundown but the food is decent. You order at the front counter whenever ready. ----- Japanese-Style Beef Curry Rice with Pork Cutlet: comes with mini salad dressed with sesame dressing ($14.74). The cutlet was crispy, and the curry had a nice thickness. It was not spicy and there's a good amount of the classic vegetables like onion and carrots.
