Mangosteen Shaped Fried Mochi Dumpling (Ham Sui Gok)
    Gordon Y.

Cuisine: 8 Service: 5 Decor: 8 Value: 5 Overall: 7 I have been here twice and really love the creativity of the dim sum items. Taste-wise, mostly solid. However, the knock on the place is that it's pricey, as well as the service is often lackluster. When I talk about the creativity, the Black Sesame Lava Pear Shaped Fried Mochi is a must order dish simply for its beauty, but also because it's delicious. I love their Mangosteen Shaped Fried Mochi Dumpling (Ham Sui Gok) too because it's flavorful, and damn cute! Other items I enjoyed were the Crab & Egg White Steamed Dumpling and an airy culler shaped dessert item with creamy filling inside. Sorry, can't think of the name. On the other hand, though most items were decent to great, not everything was amazing. Don't get the Taro Cake, which was dry and lack of flavor. I also didn't think their Pineapple Bun w/ Butter was all that wonderful. Not fluffy enough. Though service and price are important, I will return for their unique dim sum because I can't find them anywhere else.

Great lunch. The food was served quickly and the staff were friendly and on top of everything. Even during the chaotic business they kept the restaurant clean and tables were cleared quickly. Dim sum was tasty!

I'm always up to try new HK tea cafes and Joy Cafe had been on my list. The food were all good and I didn't have any major complaints. The only thing I would mention was that a couple items needed a bit more seasoning, but otherwise the dishes were fine. The egg sauce on top of stir fry rice noodle had good wok hay. It needed more salt or seasoning but it was fine after I added my own. It could have used non frozen veggies though, but it's not something that ruined the dish. This was my second favorite. The lobster dumpling is on the pricier side and a little fishy. Not horrible, but just a slight taste of it. The chicken feet is tasty but I'm not sure why the pieces were cut smaller. You are missing 1/4 of the leg, which was strange. Pork chop baked spaghetti was the best dish of our lunch. Got, bubbling and delicious. Prices are definitely on the pricier side and service was average. They take credit card though.

Really wanted to like this place as it is walking distance from our home. The service was abysmal and felt discriminating. We did not get the water or tea we ordered while all the tables around us got their beverages. To top it off we got charged for drinks and clearly no one bothered to notice. The veggie fried rice and tofu dish actually tasted pretty good. Seems like a huge roll of the dice to take the time and spend the money to eat here. We ended up taking our dinner to go and ate at home.

Joy Cafe/Fortune Terrace Kinda like a double take. I was a bit confused by the double names, and waiting for double entendres. This is the conclusion that I came to. Joy during the day and Fortune during the night. I speculationg based on the double menu. Day menu is a combination of dim sum and and regular HK style cafe items. There is also a secondary menu which contains the dinner items. This is the interesting part, the pricing. I found the individual dim sun items a tad on the pricy side for what you're getting. BUT, I found the fried rices and other noodle selections (plates) to be extremely reasonable. Was that the double take? Either way, the food was pretty decent all around and I call it a solid 3* Convenient location for the seniors. My only criticism is the seating part. They seem to be very disorganized with this, as it appears to be no dedicated host/hostess to take names. Seems like everyone is running around and you don't know who to talk to. Odd. Free wifi and undergroud parking. Register plate number at the front, but beware. You are limited to a certain amount of allocated parking stalls.

Really great HK cafe/dimsum spot. Interior was clean, large and welcoming and staff were kind and attentive. Everything tasted really good, especially the pineapple bbq pork buns, rice rolls and typical items like hargow and xiu mai. Drinks were nice too, my table got iced lemon tea, thai tea and hk milk tea which were great as well!

Strange location but food is decent. Average price for Vancouver and since its dim sum, its affordable. Parking is slightly harder to find unless you park in the residential area behind. Food quality isn't too shabby but the congee is bland. Above average in cleanliness for an Asian restaurant.

Review Template === 1. VERDICT/VALUE It's not cheap - but the food you get and the portions are decent; the service was good too, so it's recommended if you have a few extra coins in your pocket and a good place to park! === 2. FOOD This was a group meal and the following were great: - Pan Fried Pork Dumplings ($9.99) - Wontons in Chili Oil ($12.80) - Popcorn Chicken ($12.80) - Ox Tongue ($27.80) - Curry Beef Brisket ($24.80 - with drink) - Yang Chow Fried Rice ($21.80) - Mixed Grilled Set ($33.80 for three items, with drink and soup) - Egg Tofu Mushroom Broccoli ($24.80) - Sliced Beef with Veggies on Crispy Noodles ($21.80 with drink) The following were just "OK": - Spaghetti Alle Vongole ($23.80) - Lobster Bisque ($15.49 with puff pastry) === 3. SERVICE The lady who helped us was great - spoke English and Cantonese. It seems like the wait staff can also speak Mandarin too. Regardless, the lady was prompt and served us well - in fact prevented us from ordering more than we really needed! === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's white and blue: clean and relatively new/modern. Comfortable too - our group of 6 sat just fine, though perhaps we could have come in with 4 more and would have been alright. Baby strollers and wheelchairs would fit in here nicely. I am not sure about parking though - if you're not walking from across the street at Marine Gateway, I presume there is something underground here...

If you can't decide between dim sum and HK style cafe, then Joy Cafe is a good option! They have plenty of menu options. It's very spacious and close to the skytrain station. We had some dumplings, fried stuffed eggplant and the Baked Pork Chop which came with a hot milk tea. Everything was tasty!

Ordered the Shrimp Dumplings (Hao Gao) with truffle (forgot to take a photo because I was hungry :( ) and Beef Chow Fun Noodles with Gravy (Sup Chow Ngau Ho) and they were delicious! Great service, the place was clean, and a good amount of selection on their menu. Definitely will be coming back here again!

There is some free street parking but plenty of paid underground visitor parking (just unfortunately is paid parking). We visited on a Sunday and they were way more busy than I expected. We also happened to arrive during a rush so all the seats were filled and the line went to the door. Luckily, it calmed down right after and we were able to get a table while waiting for our orders. Other reviews have mentioned that they could put in more tables but I think the empty space is really important for the overall aesthetics and makes the place feel much more peaceful than crowded. They have a very nice variety of drinks and baked goods. There were so many things I wanted to try. I ordered the matcha fog which was such a unique and well made drink. I also got a coffee bun and have no complaints :) Overall, I love all the decor and especially the bunny logo! Definitely will try to stop by again in the future.

I ordered an Iced Hojicha and Matcha Croissant, and my friend ordered a Tomato Basil Shio Pan, Coffee Bun and a drink. 3.5/5 Hojicha: drink was fine but didn't have a lasting impression on me 3/5 Matcha Croissant: matcha ganache was really tasty however the croissant itself was kinda flavourless and the outside ever so slightly overbaked for my palate. 4.5/5 Tomato Basil Shio Pan: unexpected hit for all of us. Very moist and flavourful. Will definitely get this one again. Friendly staff and quick service. I enjoyed Cafe Algan and will be back to try other goods.

I've tried some desserts from this place before. I have a feeling if I'd ordered a dessert to go with my hot chocolate, I would have probably been more impressed with the dessert than the hot chocolate. For what they were offering, and compared with other fancy desserts in other places, I think the prices were pretty average. Average these days though tends to be on the pricey side I think, no matter where you go. I didn't feel like splurging on this particular night. Giving this place an "OK" rating since my hot chocolate was really just OK. If you're looking to splurge a bit though, based on my past experience...I'd recommend trying the desserts.

The walls are decorated with pictures from Europe and the teacups are very "British." Besides scone and tea, you can get regular food here as well such as fries, salt & pepper chicken, and radish cake to name just a few. You can also get cold drinks like juice & bubble tea, and bubble tea drinks here too. So...not your typical British style Afternoon Tea joint. Kind of half restaurant, half tea place. My friend had a pot of Leisure Fresh Fruit tea and a scone. We'd already had lunch a bit earlier and while my friend had room for a scone, I had zero room in my stomach for any food so I just had a pot of Longan Red Date tea. It was a cold day so a pot of hot tea really hit the spot. I thought it a bit pricy at first, but when the tea came, I saw that the teabags were Fortnum & Mason teabags. That is a very a prestigious company from all the way over in England. When I realized we were drinking Fortnum & Mason tea, all of a sudden $10.25 didn't seem so extravagant any more. My friend said her scone seemed like more of a biscuit than a scone. It came with butter and jam. I think she wished there had been some clotted cream to go with it. I can't say too much about the food as I only had one pot of tea but I was impressed that it was Fortnum & Mason tea, and I very much enjoyed the flavor of the Longan & Red Dates in my tea.
