Joy cafe has always been our go-to for a quick lunch if we cant think of a restaurant. Service has always been amazing and quality been fairly stable However, our recent visit was a bit disappointing. A group of 4 of us went for a quick lunch. We ordered 3 items: Chicken curry with spaghetti, braised pork and bitter melon with vermicelli as well as salted fish and chicken fried rice. For some reasons, all the hot drinks which accompanied the lunch set were luke warm. the chicken curry sauce was luke warm as well. The spaghetti which came with the curry was out of portion with the sauce. The amount of spaghetti was so little that we still had half the curry sauce when the spaghetti was gone. The other items were fairly greasy as well. The prices at Joy cafe has always heen a bit on the high end but quality had been stable in the past. However the quality seems to have gone downhill compared to the increased prices lately read more

I've had the pleasure of dining at Joy Cafe a handful of times now, and as it's within walking distance of home, it's become a go-to spot. They even offer the convenience of an assigned free parking stall for customers, which is a definite plus. My visits have all been for dinner, and I've been consistently impressed. Dining with my large family, we've had the chance to try some of their signature large-format meals, specifically the Lobster Tower and the Whole Roasted Pig menus. The food quality and staff service are outstanding--I'd confidently rate both aspects a 5/5. The dishes were executed perfectly, and the service was attentive and professional. Joy Cafe is perfectly set up for groups of all sizes. They have several large round tables that can seat up to 12 people, making it an ideal choice for big family gatherings. They also offer smaller tables suitable for couples and smaller families. I'm already planning my next visit to try their extensive lunch service. Cuisine: 8 Service: 5 Decor: 8 Value: 5 Overall: 7 I have been here twice and really love the creativity of the dim sum items. Taste-wise, mostly solid. However, the knock on the place is that it's pricey, as well as the service is often lackluster. When I talk about the creativity, the Black Sesame Lava Pear Shaped Fried Mochi is a must order dish simply for its beauty, but also because it's delicious. I love their Mangosteen Shaped Fried Mochi Dumpling (Ham Sui Gok) too because it's flavorful, and damn cute! Other items I enjoyed were the Crab & Egg White Steamed Dumpling and an airy culler shaped dessert item with creamy filling inside. Sorry, can't think of the name. On the other hand, though most items were decent to great, not everything was amazing. Don't get the Taro Cake, which was dry and lack of flavor. I also didn't think their Pineapple Bun w/ Butter was all that wonderful. Not fluffy enough. I'm always up to try new HK tea cafes and Joy Cafe had been on my list. The food were all good and I didn't have any major complaints. The only thing I would mention was that a couple items needed a bit more seasoning, but otherwise the dishes were fine. The egg sauce on top of stir fry rice noodle had good wok hay. It needed more salt or seasoning but it was fine after I added my own. It could have used non frozen veggies though, but it's not something that ruined the dish. This was my second favorite. The lobster dumpling is on the pricier side and a little fishy. Not horrible, but just a slight taste of it. The chicken feet is tasty but I'm not sure why the pieces were cut smaller. You are missing 1/4 of the leg, which was strange. Pork chop baked spaghetti was the best dish of our lunch. Got, bubbling and delicious. Prices are definitely on the pricier side and service was average. They take credit card though. read more

Really wanted to like this place as it is walking distance from our home. The service was abysmal and felt discriminating. We did not get the water or tea we ordered while all the tables around us got their beverages. To top it off we got charged for drinks and clearly no one bothered to notice. The veggie fried rice and tofu dish actually tasted pretty good. Seems like a huge roll of the dice to take the time and spend the money to eat here. Joy Cafe/Fortune Terrace Kinda like a double take. I was a bit confused by the double names, and waiting for double entendres. This is the conclusion that I came to. Joy during the day and Fortune during the night. I speculationg based on the double menu. Day menu is a combination of dim sum and and regular HK style cafe items. There is also a secondary menu which contains the dinner items. This is the interesting part, the pricing. I found the individual dim sun items a tad on the pricy side for what you're getting. BUT, I found the fried rices and other noodle selections (plates) to be extremely reasonable. Was that the double take? Either way, the food was pretty decent all around and I call it a solid 3* Convenient location for the seniors. My only criticism is the seating part. They seem to be very disorganized with this, as it appears to be no dedicated host/hostess to take names. Seems like everyone is running around and you don't know who to talk to. Odd. Free wifi and undergroud parking. Register plate number at the front, but beware. You are limited to a certain amount of allocated parking stalls. read more

Came here for a family lunch, there was 10 of us so we ordered alot of dishes. We ordered all the usuals for dim sum. First of all, the prices are crazy! Most dim sum dishes are over $11 per dish. And if perhaps they had sizes like Western Lake house, I could understand, but they are small and not very flavorful. The pineapple pork buns had hardly any filling, the sui mui was probably the best thing we had, it was very good, just small. The eggplant and shrimp was large and had good flavours as well. We ordered two noodle dishes but the beef dish only had celery and green pepper, and very little beef, the house special noodle had no flavours. It was very disappointing. The mushrooms actually tasted off, like they were bad. The food didn't come hot, it came out warm. Even the HK style coffee came out warm. On top of the food being mediocre, the staff were quite rude.....even cleaning up while some of us were still eating, pushing us out of the way. It was just an unpleasant experience and we won't be back. read more

Ive come here a few times now, both lunch and dinner. This is another HK style cafe, that serves the usual dishes plus dim sum. I believe its owned by the Neptune group but I could be wrong. The standout of this place is the interior - its newer, clean, fairly spacious, more modern, and comfortable. Food is ok. Solidly average as far as HK cafe food goes in Vancouver. Ive tried a variety of things. They do some dishes pretty well, others not so well. Noticeably their HK milk tea and coffee are sub-par. One of the worst Ive had in town. Super watered down and flavourless. Service is nothing better than your typical HK cafe. Dont expect higher level of service just because the decor is nicer. Pricing is a bit higher than competitors but I suppose you're paying for their decor. They have some free parking spots in the underground lot out back - but look for the signs indicating the spots dedicated to this restaurant and not the other paid spots. Otherwise you can try to find street parking in the nearby neighborhood. Worst part about the parking lot is the pathway up to the surface reeks of garbage. But thats a problem with their strata, not the restaurant. Overall solid 3/5. A bit too pricey for mediocre food and I dont care for the modern decor if their food isnt up to par. This is a place I may stop by on my way to/from the airport as its right on marine drive and usually end up going by it. Thats about the only reason though. First time here. First, all Covid steps followed including temp check. Spacing of tables is good enough, some with barriers set up. Kept it simple and had the Chau Gwai Diu (Singapore Noodles with the wider rice noodle). Quite tasty and they put in enough curry to punch out the flavour. Seafood fried rice was good with enough shrimps and fish. Roasted garlic was a nice touch. Standard HK style milk tea. Manager recommended dinner special with crabs. May try it next time. read more

Let's say I won't be rushing back anytime soon! Food is mediocre ( tried the very basic dishes in a HK Style Cafe ), interior is well spaced and service is above average. Baked Seafood Spaghetti in Cream Sauce ... below expectation as the restaurant is trying to make everyday items "upscale" but it failed, as the quality of the ingredients are nothing special, you can order the same item at a food court and it may be better and at a more reasonable price. Singapore Fried Vermicelli ... lacks any kind of "wok hei", this item is a litmus test of any HK Style Cafe, consistency of the rice vermicelli was spot on and the positive stopped here, almost flavourless and even the shrimp was flavourless, end of story. Well, if even just coming here for a relaxing afternoon tea, it doesn't provide a very user friendly parking experience, first you have to find the entrance into the parking ( its part of a high-rise complex, beware of residence & pedestrians!! ) then you have to figure out which spot is for the restaurant as there are no clear markings, then you have to pay for parking and get refund at the restaurant, oh, and you have to take the elevator or steps to get out to the street and then go into the restaurant from another entrance! Even typing this out makes me tired! Call me lazy, but I truly can think of at least 5 or 6 places that is just park and go situation, imagine when you have kids with or without strollers, or even Seniors with or without wheelchairs!! I really need to go back to Joy Cafe and give a fair answer. However, that day wasn't good on the food aspect, the service was fantastic and all the covid steps were taken at the restaurant. Crispy Beef Brisket 3/5 Served with Hoisin Sauce. I understood what the thought was... but it's pretty difficult to control food quality for brisket to not dry out for a dish like this... The encrusting of the beef I give an A+. It's good but I would try something else. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice It's pretty standard dish, for the time of lunch, this entree included a drink for under $16. This was OK. Mango Sticky Rice This was a color glob of nothing. No mango flavour, no rice flavour. What hit me first was the tasting of the frigid air of a fridge and the texture of glue (the rice and water mixture for making kimchi, THAT!), but cold and flavourless. Fail. I really like this new HK style cafe ! Opened by the same Fortune Chinese restaurant, menu is extensive with dim sum options, Chinese entrees and HK cafe favourites. Interior is modern and expansive. Came on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't busy. Seating is a mix of booths, large tables and mid sized tables. Great for get togethers, small groups and family dinners. Service is fast and efficient. We tried some dim sum har gow, char siu steam buns, rice noodle stir fry and mixed grill options. Dim sound really nice and fresh. Love that the har gow wrap was thin and fresh. Same with the steam buns. Tastes freshly hand made. Everything was delicious. Loved the mango pomelo sago pudding. Overall high quality dim sum and good options for HK cafe favorites in this area. Came here for an afternoon tea, no wait, parking on the street is recommended, finding their parking on the building would be a challenge. Had the Pineapple Bun with butter, it was decent, the Ovaltine Toast with condensed milk was heaven, the French toast with Peanut butter was ok, the milk tea was tasty but the Napoleon takes the cake, make sure you come with 5 others to be able to finish that gigantic napoleon loaded with fresh fruits. My new favourite dimsum restaurant in Vancouver, located conveniently diagonally across from Marine Drive skytrain station. I grew up eating dimsum almost every weekend in Vancouver and this is the first spot I've been to where I truly enjoyed every dish we ordered. I like it better than Fortune Terrace as I feel with a smaller menu the dishes are executed better. A5 Shrimp Dumplings with Black Truffle Sauce - Great truffle flavour throughout A6 Pork and Shrimp Dumpling (Siu Mai) - So juicy with good amounts of shrimp in each dumpling A13 Steamed Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf - Loved the addition of wild rice throughout, gave it great texture. Wish it was individually wrapped instead of one big one but that's personal preference A15 Steamed Beef Tripe in XO Sauce - Tendon and tripe, both were delicious and flavourful A17 Steamed Octopus in Sauteed Sauce - Super tender, sauce had good flavours without being overpowering D3 Deep Fried Glutinous Pear Dumplings with Flowing Black Sesame (Matcha Flavour) - My favourite dessert! The popular fruit Napoleon cake looks better than it taste. It was rather dry and plain. We all took one bite and toss the whole thing out. My husband even spit it back out. This is a new dim sum Chinese restaurant on the Marine Drive community. It has been a long time coming. The food itself is decent. They have some interesting takes on some traditional dim sum dishes. Their presentation is unique so I'll give them some creativity that's not often seen in most other dim sum restaurants! Their location is, a mixed review for me. If your driving there is free parking but there's a bit of a walk. So if you wanted to park close by. There is paid parking underground. The elevators currently at the time of this review wasn't working yet. The whole building is relatively new. But I fully expect for the elevator to be functional eventually. On the other hand. The restaurant is close to the Marine Drive Station. So if you're taking transit. It's about a five min walk, maybe even less than that to get to the restaurant. It's that close! The ambiance of the place is decent. Nothing overtly fancy or elegant. Just simple. Their staff is really attentive so that's wonderful. And the service is really good. The food comes out quickly and the waiters and waitresses who work there are pretty quick to notice your needs and respond accordingly. The only downside I would say is the price. For a dim sum restaurant. It's on the pricier end. Could probably get better value from other dim sum restaurants throughout the city to be fair. But given their location on the west side of marine drive. I can understand the logic and the rationale behind their pricing. They gotta pay rent and pay their employees! So with that being said. If you wanted to check out this place. By all means. If you wanted value for your food? This is probably not the place to come to very often. We would recommend to try and check it out ins are ways. They are very COVID-19 safe. They require you to scan your face to indicate your temperature. They require you to sanitize your hands before entering into the restaurant. They do have a sanitizer for customers to do just that. And they require that you wear a mask. So basically everything you can humanly do to protect yourself and others as you come. Moderate sized space that is clean with a mixture of tables and booths for seating. Tables are quite close together, but it creates a cozy ambience. The highlights of the meal were the Pig Egg Yolk Bun & the Deep Fried Garlic Leather Jacket Fish. Personally, I found the Matcha Black Sesame Pear disappointing. It did not taste like matcha, and unfortunately left an artificial taste at the end. Something I would love to see improved would be the temperatures of the tea and food. When you can't decide which to get why not both? * A17 - Beef tripe in XO sauce ($8.80) ~ I always get this whenever I'm at this chain. Ultra saucy, delicious, flavourful. And the tripe is always super tender and chewy. Very delicious. * B6 - stuffed whose eggplant in Thai sauce ($9.80) ~ this is a must at the Richmond location. Sadly joy cafe despite it being more saucy and delicious and big. It wasn't as crispy as I hoped it to be. I wish it was crunchier. * Pan fried rice rolls w/ prawn ($15.80) ~ very well done. Very flavourful and delicious. Each rice roll was perfectly pan fried and coated in the delicious sweet soy sauce base. Prawns were nicely seasoned and tossed in the sauce. * Thai style diced beef tenderloin on rice ($15.80) ~ this is a Thai curry with beef! The curry was super delicious and creamy nice and saucy good to be paired with rice. A good kick to it too. Sadly the beef despite the curry sauce was bland and flavourless. Legit no seasoning or marination on the beef. However it was ultra tender and soft. * 7/10 ~ the place isn't bad it's awesome for a bit of both dim sum and hk style cafe. Sadly the beef wasn't marinated or seasoned in the curry and that the eggplant wasn't crispy enough. * 8/10 ~ the dishes are sorta small portion but it's a nice variety. Dim sum portion is same best part no need to pay tea price/person. But wish the rice roll portion was bigger to match the price. Also the hk style dishes came with hot drinks! IMHO stick to the traditional dim sum, which is excellent in taste and quality. The other fancier / creative ones were not bad but not something we'd order consistently. For example, the popular "durian swans" looked great but was heavy due to the deep frying, and the durian taste was heavily diluted because I think they had to blend the durian into a mochi type of dough to give it a sturdy swan body - so in the end the taste was sacrificed to get the look. All other traditional dim sum were great, eg scallop+shrimp dumpling, siumai, wagyu beef with black pepper sauce in pastry (ordered this by accident but was very good :) Price is not cheap of course given it's Fortune Terrace, but the quality is definitely there if you want to splurge. read more
